    YUCCA HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Yucca (Yucca schidigera) is also known as Yucca glauca (Eastern; Great Plains Yucca), Yucca schidigera (Southern; Mojave Yucca), Yucca brevifolia (Western; Joshua Tree), Yucca filamentosa (Mexican; Spoonleaf Yucca, Filament Yucca, Adam's Needle), Soapweed, Soap-tree, Soapwell, Soap Root and Spanish Needle.

Throughout time, various Yucca plants were used a food source for Native Americans and early California settlers, and as a natural shampoo and soap. Yucca is used as a natural shampoo and soap, because of the high levels of soapy compounds known as saponins. Current research suggests that the saponins in Yucca are precursors to cortisone which provides pain relief , prevents the release of toxins from the intestines that restrict the growth of cartilage, making Yucca useful in treating arthritis and other soft tissue inflammatory diseases.

Yucca is a succulent that grows throughout the southern United States. Throughout time, various Yucca plants were used a food source for Native American tribes and early California settlers. The tribes used the leaves of the Yucca for treating numerous conditions, including psoriasis, dandruff, hair loss, skin sores, and inflammation, including joint inflammation due to rheumatism and arthritis. Yucca leaves have been used to make soaps, shampoos and other hygiene related items, including dental floss. In northern New Mexico, healers use a tea brewed from Yucca leaves to treat asthma and headaches.

YUCCA USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Yucca has many uses in the traditional herbal of of many Native American tribes and is currently utilized by medical practitioners in clinics.

The saponins in Yucca are said to be helpful in relieving the pain, swelling and stiffness of arthritis symptoms found with osteoarthritis, and rheumatism when taken over a long period of time. It is believed that saponins help the body produce its own cortisone, a use for which research is providing validation. Yucca saponins, when ingested in soup or decoction, seem to block release of toxins from the intestines that inhibit normal formation of cartilage. Since saponins are precursors of the body's own anti-inflammatory cortisone, Yucca may elevate the body's production of cortisone. Yucca's primary uses are in pain relieving combinations for arthritic and joint pain, and for sediment caused by inflammation such as gout, rheumatism, and cystitis. Adding the Yucca plant to the diet will act as a natural cortisone, and will wash out the harmful poisons that cause arthritis and yucca extract supplements can produce arthritis remissions.

Even more recently, research suggests that Yucca leaf extract may be useful in preventing blood clots. Yucca is also used for high blood pressure, migraine headaches, inflammation of the intestine (colitis), high cholesterol, stomach disorders, diabetes, poor circulation, liver and gallbladder disorders. Some people apply Yucca directly to the skin for sores, skin diseases, bleeding, sprains, joint pain, baldness and dandruff.

Yucca contains chemicals that might help reduce high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Taking Yucca in combination with proper diet and exercise might help lower blood pressure. For high cholesterol and high triglycerides, taking Yucca in combination with a low-fat diet and exercise seems to help lower blood fats, including cholesterol and triglycerides.

The fibrous leaves were used to make baskets, mats, cloth, rope and sandals. Flowers and fruits were eaten. The root, when pounded and soaked in water provided a shampoo called amole which could be used for cleaning hair, feathers, or cloth. The suds were used to represent clouds in religious ceremonies.

In foods, Yucca is fried like potatoes. Yucca roots are sold in produce sections of supermarkets today, but Native Americans and others have eaten the roots for a long time. There is a delightful dessert in Mexico that consists of ground Yucca root soaked in sugar, made into patties and fried.

In manufacturing, Yucca extract is used as a foaming and flavoring agent in carbonated beverages. Many compounds from Yucca have been used in the manufacture of new drugs.

    YUCCA RESEARCH & STUDIES

Keith Johnson, MD, editor of 'Turn Back the Clock' newsletter, states, 'Adding the yucca plant to your diet will act as a natural cortisone, and will wash out the harmful poisons that cause arthritis.'

According to the late Robert Bingham, MD, director of the Desert Hot Springs Medical Clinic in Palm Springs, CA, yucca extract supplements can produce arthritis remissions. He supervised the use of yucca in thousands of patients. He told reporters, 'We have known for several years that a food supplement extracted from yucca acts like a natural form of cortisone, to reduce and eliminate the pain, swelling and joint stiffness suffered by arthritis victims.'

Bingham goes on to explain, 'Toxic substances or harmful bacteria, when absorbed into the system, create allergic responses - anything from migraine to arthritis. Consequently, an anti-stress agent such as yucca saponin might have the same beneficial effect on wastes in the body and be effective in treating arthritis by improving and protecting the intestinal flora, rather than any direct action upon arthritis. 'Strong evidence supports the theory that some forms of arthritis may be caused or worsened by toxic substances occurring in the intestines and absorbed by the body. Yucca seems to inhibit these harmful intestinal bacteria and at the same time help the natural and normal forms of bacteria found in the tract.'

Presenting the results of a placebo-controlled study on the effects of yucca, Dr. Bingham, in the Journal of Applied Nutrition (Vol.27,No.2 and No.3), reported that 60 percent of people who took the yucca supplements experienced diminished pain, swelling, and stiffness. There were no side-effects. Further, those who took the yucca extract supplement had lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and relief from intestinal toxicity.

Mary Clarke, Ph.D., of Kansas State University reports that saponins 'serve as natural antibiotics for the plant.' And now, 'scientists are looking at how they can help humans fight fungal infections, combat microbes and viruses, boost the effectiveness of certain vaccines, and knock out some kinds of tumor cells, particulary lung and blood cancers. They can also lower blood cholesterol thereby reducing heart disease.

How do saponins reduce cholesterol? Bile acids are made from cholesterol in the liver and gall bladder and pass into the small intestines mixing with water to aid in digestion. As this mixture enters the colon, the water is reabsorbed back into the body carrying with it the bile acids and cholesterol. Saponins cannot penetrate the intestinal wall, but work within the small and large intestine. Saponins bind with the bile acids making them unavailable for reabsorption. They pass into the colon and are excreted. This forces the liver to produce more bile. To produce more bile, the liver must remove cholesterol from the blood, leaving less to build up in the arteries.

According to an article written by Dr. Arnold Pike in 1990 (The Healing Properties of Yucca, Let's Live, Aug.1990), there were at that time more than 100 universities and institutions around the world investigating the natural healing properties of yucca.

    YUCCA DOSAGE INFORMATION

    YUCCA CONSTITUENTS

The steroid saponins in Yucca root have both water-soluble and fat-soluble components, and so have a soap-like action when mixed with water. This makes Yucca useful in making soaps and shampoos. Native Americans of the Southwest used Yucca as an anti-dandruff shampoo, as a poultice and bath for skin complaints, sores and wounds, as well as a soup or decoction for arthritis and rheumatism.

    YUCCA DOSAGE INFORMATION

Parts used for medicinal purposes is the root of the Yucca. Yucca is usually used in tea, capsules and as an extract. The recommended dosage is 2 to 4 tablets of concentrated Yucca saponins per day. A quarter ounce of the root boiled in a pint of water for 15 minutes produces 3 to 5 cups of decoction. For other forms, please read and follow product label directions. Do not exceed recommended dosages. If you have health issues and / or taking prescribed medication, you should consult with your health care practitioner before beginning any type of herbal therapy.

YUCCA SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS INFORMATION

Yucca is regarded as safe based on its long history as a food.

However, diarrhea can occur if the recommended dose is exceeded. Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known. Preliminary reports suggest that Yucca possesses high estrogenic activity, therefore, women who have had breast cancer should not take Yucca.

Yucca appears to be safe at present when taken short-term and has been recognized on the GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) list with the US FDA since 1965. Yucca is regarded as safe based on its long history as a food and for use in foods as a foaming agent (particularly root beer). Yucca contains vitamins A, B-complex, C, Calcium, Potassium, Phosphorus, Iron, Manganese and Copper.

Diarrhea can occur if the recommended dose is exceeded. It can cause side effects such as stomach upset, bitter taste, nausea and vomiting. Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known. Stay on the safe side and avoid use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Preliminary reports suggest that Yucca possesses high estrogenic activity, therefore, women who have had breast cancer should not take Yucca.

Kalyx: Liquid Yucca, VermaPlex, 1 Quart (J)
Healthy soil requires many things. Water is one of the most important. Without water, plants cannot survive, the soil microbes that support them cannot survive, and essential nutrients cannot be transported through the soil. Some soils, however, are not able to absorb the water they need. Heavy clay soils, soils with low organic matter, and highly compressed soils, are notoriously impermeable to water. To support good fertility, these soils require supplementation with a wetting agent, which improves permeability, soil structure, and water-holding capacity. Liquid Yucca Extract is a 100% natural wetting agent derived from Yucca schidegera. This Yucca Extract is cold-pressed for maximum biological activity. As a wetting agent, Yucca Extract can be added to almost any liquid fertilizer mix, as part of an overall fertilization program. Liquid Yucca Extract increases soil permeability, allowing water and nutrients to reach plants faster. It improves the soil's water-holding capacity. Improves soil structure. Is 100% Organic. Is cold-pressed for maximum biological efficacy, and is derived from Yucca schidigera. Directions for Use - Soil Drench: Use 1 Gallon of liquid Yucca per 100 Gallons of water. Spray: Use 3 ounces of Liquid Yucca per 100 Gallon of water. Liquid Yucca should be used as part of an overall tree fertilization program.
