    YERBA SANTA HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Yerba Santa (Eriodictyon californicum, Eriodictyon glutinosum, Eriodictyon trichocalyx,) is also known as Mountain Balm, Comsumptive's Weed, Gum Bush, Bear's Weed, Bearsweed, Tarweed, Holy Herb, or Sacred Herb. Another species, E. tomentosum, is often found growing next to E. Californicum, especially in South California, but is easily distinguished from E. Californicum, being a larger shrub, and having a dense coat of short, villous hairs, coloring with age, whity-rusty; corolla, salver-shaped; leaves oval or oblong, and obtuse.

Yerba Santa is native to the American Southwest (California and Northern Mexico) and is a sticky-leafed evergreen. It was called "holy weed" by Spanish priests impressed with its medicinal properties. This herb's dried leaves was brewed as a tea to treat coughs, colds, asthma, pleurisy, tuberculosis, and pneumonia. A poultice was made from the leaves and applied to soothe painful joints. Yerba Santa has a pleasant taste and has been used as a flavoring in foods, and in cough syrups to disguise the bad taste of cough medicine ingredients.

Yerba Santa is a low, shrubby evergreen plant, 2 to 4 feet high, found growing abundantly in clumps on dry hills in California and Northern Mexico. The stem is smooth, usually branched near the ground, and covered with a peculiar glutinous resin, which covers all the upper side of the plant. Leaves, thick and leathery, smooth, of a yellowish colour, their upper side coated with a brownish varnish-like resin, the under surface being yellowish-white reticulated and tomentose, with a prominent midrib, alternate, attached by short petioles, at acute angle with the base; shape, elliptical, narrow, 2 to 5 inches long 3/4 inch wide, acute and tapering to a short leaf-stalk at the base. The margin of the leaf, dentate, unequal, bluntly undulate. The flowers, bluish, in terminal clusters of six to ten, in a one-sided raceme, the corolla funnel-like, calyx sparsely hirsute.

The chief constituents are five phenolic bodies, eriodictyol, homoeriodictyol, chrysocriol, zanthoeridol and eridonel. Free formic and other acids, glycerides of fatty acids; a yellow volatile oil; a phytosterol, a quantity of resin, some glucose. Taste, balsamic and sweetish, afterwards acrid, but not bitter, recalls Dulcamara and creates a flow of saliva. Odor, aromatic. The leaves are brittle when dry, but flexible in a warm, moist atmosphere. Eriodictyon Californicum is official in the United States Dispensary. Alcohol is the best agent for the fluid extract of the dried plant.

YERBA SANTA USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Many herbalists today regard Yerba Santa as one of the most effective, natural ways to treat chronic bronchitis and asthma. No scientific studies of this herb have been performed; however, one of Yerba Santa’s constituents, eriodictyol, does appear to be a mild expectorant. This herb can be used topically to treat poison ivy.

Yerba Santa is recommended for bronchial and laryngeal troubles and in chronic pulmonary affections, in the treatment of asthma and hayfever in combination with California Gum Plant (Grindelia robusta), a member of the Sunflower family. It is advised for hemorrhoids and chronic catarrh of the bladder. Much used in California as a bitter tonic and a stimulating balsamic expectorant and is a most useful vehicle to disguise the unpleasant taste of quinine. Male Fern and Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis). In asthma, the leaves are often smoked. Aromatic syrup is the best vehicle for quinine.

Unlike many other astringent herbs, Yerba Santa actually has a pleasant taste. It is used as a food flavoring and as an additive to herbal cough syrups to disguise the taste of other ingredients. Bitter resins, eriodictyol, eriodictyonic acid, eriodictyonine, essential oil, tannins provide its constituents.

    YERBA SANTA DOSAGE INFORMATION

Parts used are the dried leaves. It can be used as a tea, but must be allowed to steep for at least half an hour to dissolve the resins. To make Yerba Santa tea, add 1 teaspoon of crushed leaves to 1 cup of boiling water. Drink 3 cups a day until symptoms diminish.

However, many resinous constituents of this herb do not dissolve in water, therefore, alcoholic tinctures of Yerba Santa may be more effective and more frequently used. It is important to read and follow product label directions if using a tincture formulation. For other formulations and products, read and follow product label directions.

Dosage is 15 to 60 grains (approximately 1 to 2 grams).

YERBA SANTA SAFETY, CAUTIONS, & INTERACTIONS

Yerba santa is a warm and pungent herb that is both astringent and stimulant. A study published in 1951 in the journal Archives of Biochemistry notes that the resins are mildly antibacterial. Most of the nation's supply of Yerba Santa comes from California with most stands existing in the Sierra Nevada mountain chain and parts of southern California.

Yerba Santa is generally regarded as safe as a food flavoring by FDA standards, although there have been occasional allergic reactions. Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known.
