    YELLOW JESSAMINE HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Yellow Jessamine (Gelsemium sempervirens) is also known as Jessamine, Jasmine, Carolina Jasmine, False Jasmine, Evening Trumpflower, Gelsemium, Woodbine, and Yellow Jasmine.

Yellow Jessamine is a perennial evergreen that twines in vines and can grow up to 40 feet long. This plant has glossy green leaves, two to four inches long that grow along its stem in opposite pairs and has clustered, funnel-shaped, aromatic yellow flowers, sometimes with an orange center. The individual flowers are 1.2 inches long and approximately an inch wide, strongly scented and produce nectar that attracts a range of pollinators. It is also the state flower of South Carolina. Gelsemium sempervirens is a twining vine in the family Gelsemiaceae, native to subtropical and tropical America (Honduras, Guatamala, Belize, Mexico), and southeastern and south-central United States (from Texas to Virginia.

This plant's fragrant beauty hides the fact that it contains a deadly poison with fatal effects similar to hemlock. Eating any part of this plant by a person or animal can result in immediate paralysis, then death. There have even been cases where bees that pollinate this flower have been poisoned.

Despite its deadly actions, the root of Yellow Jessamine was once a medicine that was used for treating whooping cough and asthma. A tea from the flowers was used for coughs, shortness of breath, pleurisy and upset stomach. Early Native Americans used this plant as a blood purifier. Yellow Jessamine has sedative, pain killing, antispasmodic and fever-reducing properties.

YELLOW JESSAMINE USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Historically, Gelsemium sempervirens was used as a topical to treat papulous eruptions. It was also used to treat measles, neuralgia otalgia, tonsillitis, esophagitis, dysmenorrhea, muscular rheumatism, and headaches.

Today Yellow Jessamine is used only in homeopathic remedies as a treatment for fever, convulsive coughing, and severe phobias. In very small doses, it can be used as a sedative and antispasmodic for treating neuralgia, intercostal neuralgia, sciatica and nerve pain that affects the face. It is also used for whooping cough and asthma. Occasionally it is used in treating migraine and insomnia, and for lowering blood pressure, and bowel problems.

    PLANT TOXICITY

All parts of this plant contain the toxic strychnine-related alkaloids gelsemine and gelseminine and should not be consumed. The sap may cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Children, mistaking this flower for honeysuckle, may have been poisoned by sucking the nectar from the flower. The nectar is also toxic to honeybees, which may cause brood death when gathered by the bees. The nectar may, however, be beneficial to bumblebees. It has been shown that bees fed on gelsemine have a reduced load of Crithidia bombi in their fecal matter. Reduced parasite load increases foraging efficiency, and pollinators may selectively collect otherwise toxic secondary metabolites as a means of self-medication.

Despite the hazards, this garden plant is popular in warmer areas, frequently being trained to grow over arbors or to cover walls.

    YELLOW JESSAMINE DOSAGE INFORMATION

Yellow Jessamine is highly toxic and should only be used under the supervision of a homeopathic health care practitioner.

YELLOW JESSAMINE SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS INFORMATION

Yellow Jessamine root is extremely toxic. The alkaloids found in this herb act as a depressant to the central nervous system. Only one teaspoon of the root can cause vertigo, weakness, and death from paralysis of respiratory muscles. Do not use without the strict supervision of your homeopathic practitioner.
