    YARROW HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Yarrow is also known as Common Yarrow, Soldier's Woundwort, Yarrow Flower, Yarrow Herb, Achillea millefolium, Bloodwort, Staunchweed, Thousand Leaf, Nosebleed, Woundwort, Western Yarrow, Milfoil. Achillea millefolium, the scientific name for Yarrow, was derived from the Greek general Achilles. It was said that during the Trojan War Achilles used Yarrow to stop the bleeding of his soldier’s wounds. Throughout time it has also been used as a treatment for respiratory infections, menstrual pain, and digestive upset.

Yarrow is known for its astringent properties. Yarrow is also used as an anti-inflammatory and in cold preparations. Other properties include antiarthritic, antibacterial, antifungal, antipyretic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, diaphoretic, digestive, emmenagogue, expectorant, febrifuge, stimulant, stomachic, tonic, and vulnerary. Though there have been no scientific studies to prove its effectiveness, Yarrow tea is commonly taken at the onset of a cold or flu to induce sweating and ward off infection and coughs. Other benefits are the treatment of burns, cuts and wounds, and varicose veins. The crushed leaves and flower tops of this herb can be used in a poultice to stop nosebleeds and bleeding from minor wounds. Yarrow may be helpful in treating constipation, cramps, diarrhea, fever, flatulence, indigestion, insomnia and skin toning. Yarrow may be added to skin care preparations. Yarrow was used in the brewing process to flavor beer before hops were used.

    yarrow flower color variations

Yarrow, native to both Europe and Asia. Yarrow is a long-stemmed member of the sunflower family found in the wild throughout the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It is of the Compositea family. It can be recognized by its highly segmented leaves (millefolium literally means "thousand leaves"), and the clusters of fragrant daisy-like white flowers at the top of the stalk. Yellow or pinkish-lavender flowers may also be in yarrow plant variations. It is a perennial herb that grows up to 3 feet high. Yarrow oil is extracted from Achillea millefolium by steam distillation.

Greek myth had it that the Greek general Achilles painted himself with a tincture of yarrow to make himself invulnerable to arrows, everywhere on his body except his heel. It was said that during the Trojan War, Achilles used Yarrow to stop the bleeding of his soldier's wounds. Throughout time it has also been used as a treatment for respiratory infections, menstrual pain, and digestive upset.

Native American herbal medicine makes extensive use of yarrow. Among the Micmac people of Maine, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, the stalk was chewed or stewed to induce sweating to "break" fevers and colds. They also pounded the stalks into a pulp to be applied to bruises, sprains, and swelling. The Cherokee, Gosiute, Iroquois, and Mohegan peoples used yarrow as a digestive aid. Other herbal healing traditions use yarrow to treat a variety of conditions characterized by swelling, often combined with echinacea, elder flower, ginger, and peppermint.

Yarrow was used as a charm in Scotland and was credited with having powers to ward off evil. It has a reputation of h aving an all-healing action and has been used for a variety of ailments throughout the ages and is even added to some Swedish beers.
