WHEAT GERM & WHEAT GERM OIL DESCRIPTION

WHEAT GERM - A NUTRITIONAL FOOD SOURCE

Wheat contains a variety of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. In juice form it contains about 70 percent chlorophyll, which is said to closely resemble the molecules of human red blood cells. Dr. Ann Wigmore, an educator and founder of the Hippocrates Health Institute in Boston, popularized it as a rich nutritional food source. According to Dr. Wigmore, 1 pound of Wheatgrass is equal to nearly 25 pounds of the most nutritious vegetables.

Some types of foods can have "overall" nutritional benefits. This means that when consumed in their full and complete forms, all parts provide optimal nutrition. Wheat is one of those foods and the wheat germ is the healthy part of the grain that contains the vast majority of the nutrients. A wheat kernel consists of the outside shell (wheat bran), the starchy endosperm (used to mill flour), and the wheat germ (the reproductive element).

Nutritionally speaking, wheat germ is one of the most valuable products available. It is the smallest part of the whole grain, which is made up of 4 parts:
    • The husk (outer layer)
    • The bran (a nutritious, high fiber part of the grain)
    • The endosperm (the largest part of the grain, used in processed grain foods)
    • The germ (the smallest part of the grain, packed with nutrients)

    wheat germ kernel

When wheat germ is extracted from the kernel and isolated into natural oils, or when the grain is eaten in its' entirety, the nutritional benefits of the germ can be passed into a person's system. Wheat germ is often turned into cooking or baking oil for highly concentrated doses of wheat germ on salads or in pasta sauces, but it should not be used as frying oil, because much of the nutrients are lost when heated to that level. Wheat germ can act as an additive in desserts or smoothies, or even as a replacement for breadcrumbs or flour in many recipes, conferring a wealth of nutritional benefits on those that choose to add it to their diet.

Wheat germ is a bountiful source of energy, fiber, protein, and complex carbohydrates, all of which interact in numerous ways with the body's internal systems. Important daily vitamins like folate, Vitamin E, and B (Niacin, Thiamin, and B-6) can also be found in high levels in wheat germ. Minerals are usually not far behind vitamins, and wheat germ provides huge levels of potassium and iron to people's diets, as well as very good levels of zinc, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, and selenium. The wheat germ also has omega-3 fatty acids, one of the necessary and beneficial forms of cholesterol found in the body that needs frequent replenishing from dietary sources like wheat germ

    WHEAT GERM OIL

Wheat Germ oil is obtained from the embryo or kernel of the wheat grain. It is extracted from the germ of the wheat kernel. Although germ makes up only about 2.5 to 3 percent by weight of the kernel, the benefits of wheat germ stem from the fact that it contains almost 25 percent of the total proteins, vitamins and minerals of the wheat grain. The oil is the richest source of Vitamin E known to date than any other vegetable oil or food that has not undergone prior preparation or vitamin fortification. In 1988, the American Journal of Epidemiology published that regular intake of vitamin E protects against cancer. Another benefit of vitamin E is that it serves as a protector of cellular metabolism, giving a longer life to tissues thus slowing the aging process.

Other health benefits of Vitamin E are:
    • Helps to treat infertility. A deficiency of vitamin E in women causes irregular periods and increases the risk of abortion. In men, it causes reduced sperm mobility.
    • Protects cell membranes from oxidation and harmful free radicals.
    • Blocks the process by which nitrites used as preservatives in foods form tumors.

Wheat Germ oil is also a high content of Vitamin A and D. It is rich in protein and lecithin. Wheat Germ oil is a light yellow, fat soluble natural oil and is particularly high in octacosanol - a 28-carbon long-chain saturated primary alcohol found in a number of different vegetable waxes. Octacosanol has been studied as an exercise- and physical performance-enhancing agent. Very long chain fatty alcohols obtained from plant waxes and beeswax have been reported to lower plasma cholesterol in humans. As a cooking oil, Wheat Germ oil is strongly flavored, expensive and easily perishable. Wheat Germ oil contains the following fatty acids:

WHEAT GERM USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

    WHEAT GERM NUTRITIONAL USES

Wheat germ is the small, nutrient-containing center of a wheat kernel, comprising only about 2.5-percent of the weight of the kernel, but has a list of benefitial attributes.
    • Immune System Boost: The health benefits of wheat germ include a boost to the immune system.
    • Healthy Heart: Wheat germ provides preventative measures against cardiovascular disease, prevent artery damage.
    • Anti-Cancer: Wheat germ provides proventive measures against cancer.
    • Anti-Aging: Wheat germ has anti-aging properties, and can positively affect mental agility, muscle development, stamina.
    • Wound Healing: Improves the healing rate for wounds.
    • Digestion: The nutrients in wheat germ can also aid in digestion.
    • Weight Loss: Wheat germ can help in efforts to lose weight.

    WHEAT GERM HEALTHY BENEFITS
Organic Facts: Health Benefits of Wheat Germ

  • Immune System: By adding wheat germ to your diet, you can positively boost your immune system to fight against a number of diseases and conditions like heart disease and cancer. Wheat germ protein hydrolysates have been shown to positively increase the antioxidant activity in organic systems. Antioxidants seek out and destroy free radicals and other disease-causing microorganisms in the body, reducing or eliminating the chances of serious illness. Wheat germ has been shown to naturally contain high levels of these hydrolysates that stimulate the antioxidants within the immune system.

  • Cardiovascular Health: Studies have shown that the regular intake of whole grain wheat and wheat germ can reduce risk factors associated with coronary heart disease and can increase the health of the entire cardiovascular system. LDL cholesterol is cholesterol that has been oxidized, and therefore swells in the arteries and veins. This is a common sign and risk factor for heart attacks and strokes. Including wheat germ in your diet increases the amount of dietary fiber, which has also been scientifically linked to a reduction in heart disease. The presence of octacosanol in wheat germ has also been shown to reduce cholesterol levels, thereby decreasing chances of strokes and other harmful issues. High levels of omega-3 fatty acids in wheat germ also work to cancel out the negative effects of omega-6 fatty acids, further protecting your cardiovascular system.

  • Cancer Prevention: Adding wheat germ or certain types of wheat germ extracts to your diet can help you reduce the risk factors for multiple types of cancer. It has been shown to interrupt glucose metabolism at a fundamental level and inhibit the expression of various kinases, which may stimulate cancerous activity in cells. The study shows that test subjects with wheat germ extract in their diet have increased TNF secretion by the macrophages and stimulating NK cell activity (Natural Killer cells). Both of these benefits result in apoptosis (cell death) for cancerous and tumorous cells. The small germ inside wheat may not look very impressive, but its effects are very powerful.

  • Anti-Aging Properties: Wheat germ is packed with nutrients and vitamins in such high levels that it can have significant effects on various anti-aging effects like skin quality and hair loss. As a dietary supplement, wheat germ is a natural way to get these benefits, but some people also choose to go for a more cosmetic approach, using wheat germ extract directly, or mixing it with other cosmetic materials. Vitamin E is packed into wheat germ as well, and studies have shown a wide range of benefits to people who fill their daily requirements of that vitamin. When eaten regularly, the proteins and vitamins within wheat germ can positively affect people with conditions like psoriasis, sunburn, eczema, wrinkles, dull complexion, and receding hairlines.

  • Athletic Performance: Recent popular studies have shown wheat germ to have high levels of naturally occurring octacosanol, which has certain ergogenic qualities. This means that when taken as a part of a regular diet, wheat germ can increase stamina and performance by regulating the biochemical pathways that produce energy, which in effect streamlines the saving of energy reserves in the body. These effects have been shown multiple times, but so many variables come into play that firm scientific backing for wheat germ as a performance-enhancing dietary choice is moderate to weak.

  • Cellular Metabolism: Another of the beneficial vitamins found in wheat germ is Vitamin B, which consists of a number of different vitamins. The most common types found in wheat germ are Niacin, Thiamine, and folates (discussed below). These vitamins are vital for cellular metabolism, helping to transform nutrients from carbohydrates, lipids, and glucose into consumable energy for the cells. Thiamine can also fight against metabolic disorders like chronic obesity. A higher functioning metabolism means more natural energy, as well as more successful weight loss, strength, and alertness. B vitamins can be found in many whole grains, and in particular, a high supply within wheat germ.

  • Muscle Health: One of the best sources of protein in a diet can come from wheat germ, and protein has a laundry list of beneficial attributes. Protein is integral in maintaining healthy muscles, repairing damaged tissues, regulating energy levels within the body, and aiding in homeostasis and overall system balance. Protein is also an essential dietary requirement for people wanting to get in shape and increase muscle mass. If you are looking to bulk up in a healthy way, add wheat germ to your health regimen for great results.

  • Pregnancy: Wheat germ is loaded with folic acid, which is an important factor in ensuring a healthy infant for pregnant women. Women who have healthy levels of folates in their system have a greatly reduced chance of their child having neural tube defects and other complications. Adding wheat germ into your diet when pregnant can be beneficial in many ways, given its nutrient-packed nature, but the high levels of folic acid make it particularly attractive and popular.

  • Diabetes: The presence of so much folic acid in wheat germ has a secondary effect for people at risk for diabetes. Folic acid is negatively correlated with a compound called “homocysteine” in the body, which is closely linked to a number of harmful conditions, like vascular disease, diabetes, and heart disease. Folic acid is present in many whole grains, and in particularly high levels in wheat germ. Therefore, if you add normal, healthy doses of wheat germ to your diet, you will reduce the levels of homocysteine in your body, and reduce your chances of contracting these dangerous or lethal conditions.

  • SUPPLEMENT FORMS

Wheat germ may be ingested in several forms:
    • Flakes: Add 2 tablespoons sprinkled on cereal, yogurt, juice, salads.
    • Oil: Wheat germ oil is rich in vitamin E, linoleic acids and phospholipids. Add 2 teaspoons of Wheat Germ oil to salads daily. It can be applied directly on the skin to prevent wrinkles.
    • Capsules: If you do not like the taste of the oil but want its benefits, buy capsules of Wheat Germ oil and take it this way. For the recommended dose read the container.

Cereals have formed a very important part in the diet of human beings throughout history. The wheat germ is the part of each kernel that helps in reproducing the plant, so naturally, it contains the many nutrients needed to grow and develop into a healthy, new organism. For years, wheat kernels were used mainly to mill flour, in which case the bran and germ parts were causally thrown away and white flour was produced, which held little or no nutritional value of any kind. In fact, once synthetic vitamins and bleaches are added to that flour, it can actually do more harm than good. With respect to wheat, traders needed to store wheat flour and its products for prolonged periods of time so they opted for removing the germ and bran. By eliminating these components, the wheat flour lasts longer. The problem is that linoleic and linolenic acids, proteins, and vitamin E are also removed.

Probably one of the best things about Wheat Germ, especially as you get older and your digestive system starts to slow down, is that it is an excellent source of fiber. Eating Wheat Germ on a regular basis, as well as eating other fiber rich foods, is an excellent way to stay regular and avoid things like constipation, or worse, a blocked colon.

Wheat Germ For Women: Women especially benefit from taking Wheat Germ as it helps alleviate premenstrual symptoms and also menopausal symptoms. The minerals in wheat germ are also excellent for promoting healthy skin, nails and hair. Women also benefit from having stronger bones and teeth. Also, studies show that eating Wheat Germ helps prevent certain types of birth defects.

Wheat Germ For Toddlers: Wheat Germ is an incredibly healthy ingredient that provides a massive nutritional boost to your baby's meals with a subtle flavor the baby would not even notice it. When your baby is about 9 months old, you may begin to introduce wheat products such as Wheat Germ. Note: Before including Wheat Germ (which contains gluten). or any other wheat products into your baby's diet, be sure to consult with your baby's health care practitioner as your baby may have a special situation and the general recommendations may not apply. Wheat Germ provides more nutrients per ounce than any other grain or vegetable. By adding it to your baby's diet, you are providing him or her with these nutrients:
    • Folic Acid
    • Phosphorus (needed for healthy teeth and bones)
    • Fiber (needed for colon health and prevention of constipation)
    • Vitamin A
    • Vitamins B-1 and B-3
    • Vitamin B-5 (otherwise known as Pantothenic Acid, which helps the body assimilate energy from food)
    • Vitamin E (which strengthens the immune system)
    • Protein (the Protein content of wheat germ is actually higher than most meats)
    • Iron
    • Potassium
    • Riboflavin
    • Calcium
    • Magnesium
    • Zinc

This list is by no means all inclusive. A regular diet of Wheat Germ will also give you more strength and energy, keeps your cholesterol at normal levels and also helps prevent illness. Wheat germ, in any form is a great source of many nutrients important for maintaining good health.

  • Wheat Germ oil is known for its antioxidant properties. Hence it helps in preventing the skin from bearing the signs of aging. It is probably this reason that it is added to other carrier oils. However, it is used in lower amounts to prepare carrier oil blend as it is high in nutritional value.

  • Linoleic acid, oleic palmitic and stearic fatty acids are the essential fatty acids present in Wheat Germ oil. These essential oils cannot be manufactured by the body. Hence they should be taken externally as they improve the immune system, the nervous system and help in healthy cell growth and regeneration.

  • Wheat Germ oil is particularly high in a long chain saturated primary alcohol called octacosanol. This compound was reported by some athletes in the 1960s to enhance their performance. Octacosanol in particular was believed to increase endurance and muscle strength in sports persons. Though there is not much scientific evidence about its beneficial effects in improving fitness or athletic performance, some studies have shown that octacosanol and policosanol cause a mild improvement in reaction time.

  • WHEAT GERM OIL & SKIN CARE

Dark in color with a robust aroma reminiscent of grain, Wheat Germ oil is beneficial for both humans and animals. The oil is removed from the germ of wheat kernel and is available in unrefined and refined. It comes as stand-alone oil or a carrier oil to dilute essential oils. Somewhat expensive, Wheat Germ oil is suitable for cooking, dietary supplement, external and cosmetic use. Also, Wheat Germ oil is a natural supplement suitable for pets.

    WHEAT GERM DOSAGE INFORMATION

Wheat germ is a grain that has many health benefits. It is full of fiber and protein, and other nutrients like calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, zinc, omega-6 fatty acids and omega-3 fatty acids. It comes from the center of the wheat grain and can be used in many ways. Here are some tips on how to eat wheat germ.
    • Replace flour in recipes when baking. An easy to use wheat germ is to use it in meals. You can replace up to 1/2 a cup of the flour in recipes such as muffins, pancakes and other baked goods.
    • Stir it into your oatmeal or other hot cereal. Add a tablespoon to your morning oatmeal. The recommended daily dosage for wheat germ is 1 tablespoon for every 100 lbs of weight.
    • Use wheat germ instead of granola on your yogurt or cereal. Wheat germ has a slightly nutty flavor, and makes a great substitute for granola on foods like yogurt or cereal.
    • Add wheat germ to your smoothies. Adding a few spoonfuls to your smoothies is an easy way to bump up the nutrition in them and get some wheat germ benefits. You can also add some to milkshakes and protein shakes. Just add it in before blending.
    • Substitute wheat germ for breadcrumbs in recipes. In recipes such as meatloaf, casseroles and baked chicken, substitute half the recommended amount of bread crumbs for wheat germ. Sprinkle it on top of macaroni and cheese as an alternative to breadcrumbs.
    • Mix some into dessert toppings. When making desserts like fruit crumble and apple pies, mix some wheat germ into the topping before putting it on.
    • Bake it directly into the dessert. When making cakes, sprinkle some on the top. It will go under the frosting so it won't be seen, but will still boost the nutritional value. You can even mix some into the crust of pies before baking.
    • Cook using wheat germ oil. If you have wheat germ in the form of oil, you can use it in food. You should not use it as frying oil though. Wheat germ oil will lose its nutrients when it is heated. Use wheat germ oil instead of olive oil to make salad dressings and pasta sauces. You can also use it in place vegetable in baking. The oil will add more protein and vitamins A, D and E to your food.
Recommended dose of Wheat Germ oil: 2 teaspoons daily.

For other uses not given here, read and follow product label directions.

WHEAT GERM SAFETY & INTERACTION INFORMATION

    SAFETY CONCERNS

There are no known safety issues or interactions associated with Wheat and Wheat Germ.

However, for those with a gluten allergy it is possible to have a reaction to Wheat products. Do not use wheat germ oil as topical oil or in cooking if you have a wheat or gluten allergy or if you have celiac disease. A growing number of the population can no longer eat gluten, which is a primary component in grains like wheat. This gluten intolerance can often be caused by disease, like Celiac's Disease. Eating gluten can be painful and harmful to the digestive tract, and even fatal in some extreme conditions. Despite the other nutritional benefits of wheat germ, if you are required to maintain a gluten-free diet, do not consume wheat germ or wheat germ extract.

Besides being nutrient-rich, wheat germ is also very high in calories. The positive benefits of wheat germ can be cancelled out if the intake of other daily calories is not monitored, because weight gain and subsequent health issues can occur regardless of how healthy the food was that contributed to your high caloric intake.

Be careful not to take more than the indicate dose of Wheat Germ oil. Vitamin E is considered potentially toxic if more than the recommended dose is taken. Other factors to take into account is that vitamin E can become pro-oxidant with copper. Vitamin E with selenium has a synergistic effect.

Wheat Germ oil is a very sensitive oil that tends to degrade if not stored with care. It should be kept away from high temperatures because if exposed to extreme temperatures, it may turn rancid. However, if kept properly, the shelf life of wheat germ oil can be extended up to a few months. Refrigeration is highly recommended.
