    TEA TREE DESCRIPTION

    AN AUSTRALIAN MEDICINAL REMEDY

Tea Tree is also known as Melaleuca alternifolia, Cajeput Tree, Melaleuca, and Manuka.

Native Australians were the first to discover that the Tea Tree is a remedy for many different ailments. The aborigines used its leaves to make a medicinal tea that builds and strengthens the immune system. The Tea Tree gained its name from Captain Cook, after he found the aromatic resinous leaves made a satisfying substitute for proper tea. A century and a half later, an Australian government chemist studied Tea Tree leaves and found strong antiseptic qualities in the leaves. After that, Tea Tree became the standard for treating wound infections. Once antibiotics became widely available, Tea Tree oils were no longer used as a primary treatment.

Today, because of its antibacterial properties, Tea Tree oil occupies a favored position in aromatherapy. It can counteract bacteria, fungi and viruses, as well as eliminate parasites. It inhibits inflammation, eases pain and protects the skin. The oil has also been shown to penetrate the outer layers of the skin and attack infections, helping to heal wounds. The essential oil from the Tea Tree leaves, which has a scent similar to camphor, is extracted through steam distillation. It is sold in stores under two names - "Tea Tree Oil" and "Melaleuka Oil". It is a popular ingredient in personal care products, such as soaps and mouthwashes.. This versatile oil should be part of your home medicine chest or cabinet.

Tea Tree oil. or Melaleuca oil, is a pale yellow color to nearly colorless and clear essential oil with a fresh camphoraceous odor. It is taken from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia, which is native to Southeast Queensland and the Northeast coast of New South Wales, Australia. Although Tea Tree oil normally is extracted from the M. Alternifolia tree commerically, it can also be extracted from M. dissitiflora and M. linanifolia. Tea Tree oil should not be confused with tea oil, the sweet seasoning and cooking oil from pressed seeds of the tea plant Camellia sinensis (beverage tea), or the tea oil plant Camellia oleifera.

    THERAPEUTIC EFFECT

Among over 98 compounds contained in the oil, terpinen-4-ol is responsible for most of the antimicrobial activity. More than 50 rare, natural substances have been isolated from the essence of Tea Tree leaves. Tea Tree oil is time-tested for aiding bronchitis, coughs, infectious diseases, muscle aches and pains, arthritis, rheumatism, constipation, eczema, and treating wounds. It is used as a disinfectant. Because Tea Tree oil kills viruses, bacteria and fungi, it can heal internal and external infections, including athlete's foot and fungi that affect the nails. It also is believed that Tea Tree oil alleviates acne and rashes and helps irritated skin and wounds to heal more quickly. Tea Tree oil is fungicidal, antiseptic and safe to use on most delicate parts of the body.

TEA TREE OIL USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

    ANTISEPTIC BENEFITS

The leaf of the tea tree had a long history of use by the indigenous peoples of Australia before tea tree was 'discovered' by the crew of the famous English explorer James Cook. The aroma of the oil is warm, spicy, medicinal and volatile. It is occasionally used to scent spicy colognes and aftershaves. Tea Tree oil blends particularly well with Cinnamon, Clary Sage, Clove, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Myrrh, Nutmeg, Rosewood, Rosemary and Thyme essential oils. Aromatherapy benefits include cleansing, purifying, uplifting.

The Tea Tree (melaleuca alternifolia) is a member of the Myrtaceae family and is an indigenous species to Northern New South Wales, Australia. The oil is found within the cells of the leaves, and as the Tea Tree is extremely fast-growing it is a constantly renewable resource. The crushed leaves were used as a general antiseptic by the Native Australians for thousands of years. Captain James Cook and his crew used the leaves as a substitute for tea, hence the name. Unlike the dilute tea, however, the concentrated oil should be used topically, not ingested.

Tea Tree oil is an effective bactericide killing a broad spectrum of bacteria and a range of stubborn fungi. It is safe for healthy tissue and does not inhibit normal cell growth and rejuvenation. The oil contains numerous chemicals known as terpenoids. The oil kills fungus and bacteria, including those resistant to some antibiotics. A single blind study has shown topical application of 5% tea tree oil in people with acne is as helpful as benzoylperoxide and has fewer side effects. Tea tree oil contributes to an extremely effective antibacterial shampoo. A double blind study found 100% tea tree oil applied topically was as effective as the antifungal medicine clotrimazole for people with athlete's foot fungus affecting the toe nails. Dilute solutions, containing no more than 5% tea tree oil, can safely be used as a very effective mouthwash. Unlike many antiseptics, Tea Tree oil kills bacteria as effectively in the real environment of the body as it does in the test tube. Its solvent nature allows it to penetrate into skin layers, even reaching inaccessible sites such as the fingernails and toenails.Tea Tree oil is a powerful organic solvent and will actually dissolve the lumps of white blood cells which make pus.

Tea Tree oil has a penetrating quality that makes it helpful in treating infected wounds, and it is most effective as an antiseptic against many bacteria and fungi. Tea Tree oil can be used to help control acne when applied directly to the skin. Preliminary studies show it can be useful in treating vaginal infections caused by candida or other organisms, and fungal infections of the feet and nails. In Australia, dentists have patients use Tea Tree oil mouthwash before dental procedures, and as a daily preventive against periodontal disease. It can help with influenza, cold sores, catarrh, glandular fever and gingivitis.

  • A NOTE ABOUT ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential and resin oils are volatile, fragrant materials extracted from the root, bark, wood, seed, fruit, leaf or flower of a single plant. Essential oils contain the odor, taste and medicinal properties of the plant itself, but in very concentrated form, with no base oil, alcohol, water or dilutants added. Steam distillation and cold pressing are used to extract the essential oil from the plant. Pure essential oils are suitable for use in aromatherapy, cosmetic preparation, healing and body care, potpourris and more. Essential oils are very potent and should always be used sparingly and in conjunction with a reliable reference.

  • TEA TREE DOSAGE INFORMATION

Tea Tree preparations contain various percentages of tea tree oil.

A typical strength used when treating acne is 5 to 15-percent, for fungal infections, suggested concentration is 70 to 100-percent, and for vaginal infections, 1 to 40-percent concentration with medical supervision. Tea Tree can also serve as a deodorant. For the best results, use Tea Tree products that contain oil from the alternifolia species of Melaleuca only, standardized to contain not more than 10-percent cineole, which is an irritant, and at least 30-percent terpinen-4-o1.

TEA TREE SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTION INFORMATION

    SAFETY CONCERNS

Tea tree oil can be toxic if taken orally in excessive doses. Tea Tree oil is usually without any contra-indications but it may cause sensitization in some people.

It has been reported to cause drowsiness, confusion, hallucinations, coma, unsteadiness, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset, blood cell abnormalities, and severe rashes. A maximum safe dosage has not been determined, therefore it is recommended you use the product topically where it is believed to be completely safe. Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver and kidney disease is not known. It should be kept away from pets and children. In dogs and cats, transient signs of toxicity (lasting 2 to 3 days), such as depression, weakness, incoordination and muscle tremors, have been reported after external application at inappropriately high doses.

Some people can experience allergic contact dermatitis as a reaction to dermal contact with tea tree oil. Allergic reactions may be due to the various oxidation products that are formed by exposure of the oil to light and /or air. While Tea Tree oil is one of the few essential oils that is considered safe to use undiluted on the skin, never apply it undiluted near the eye. Also, undiluted oils are not recommended for use on pets, small children, the elderly or babies.

Undiluted tea tree oil can cause some hearing loss when used in the ears of non-human animals, However, a 2-percent concentration has not been shown to have any lasting effect. It is not known whether the same is true for humans.

If used in concentrations below 4-percent or particularly below 0.25-percent, Tea Tree oil may fail to kill bacteria and create selection pressure, which may result in them becoming less sensitive to tea tree oil and even some antibiotics in vitro.

One reported case of transient gynecomastia (abnormally large mammary glands / breasts) in a boy who was using a hair styling gel containing both Lavender and Tea Tree oil suggests that Tea Tree oil may possess endocrine disrupting activity capable of leading to gynecomastia. Gynecomastia resolved within a few months of stopping the product, and the antiandrogenic effects of Lavender and Tea Tree oil were confirmed using human breast cancer cell lines.
