    TANGERINE DESCRIPTION

    TANGERINE FRUIT & PEEL

Oranges have been cultivated for over 3,000 years in China. They are found in many shapes and sizes from the size of a small walnut, to a larger than average orange. The tangerine (Citrus tangerina), also known as Chen Pi or Ju Hong, is an orange-colored citrus fruit which is closely related to the mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata). Taxonomically, it may be named as a subspecies or variety of Citrus reticulata.

Tangerine peel has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It is said to regulate and normalize the flow of qi (life force) In France and other parts of Europe, it is known particularly as a remedy for children and the elderly--both for digestive problems and to soothe overwrought young minds. Tangerine peel is an ingredient in many traditional Chinese tonics.

Tangerines are smaller than common oranges, and are usually easier to peel and to split into segments. The taste is considered less sour, but sweeter and stronger, than that of an orange. A good tangerine will be firm to slightly soft, heavy for its size, and pebbly-skinned with no deep grooves, as well as orange in color. Peak tangerine season lasts from October to April in the Northern Hemisphere.

Tangerines are most commonly peeled and eaten out of hand. The fresh fruit is also used in salads, desserts and main dishes. The peel is dried and used in Sichuan cuisine. Fresh tangerine juice and frozen juice concentrate are commonly available in the United States. The number of seeds in each segment (carpel) varies greatly. A popular alternative to tangerines are clementines, which are called seedless tangerines and are also a variant of the mandarin orange. Tangerines (and tangerine oil) provide a whole source of Vitamin C, beta-carotene and folate. They also contain other essential vitamin B's, potassium and magnesium.

There are many varieties of Tangerines. Honey tangerines (murcotts as it is called in the industry) are the most widely grown tangerine, trailed by the sunburst tangerine, and with lowest amount of acreage, the fallglo. One of the oldest and formerly most popular varieties is the Dancy tangerine, but it is no longer widely grown. The Dancy was known as the zipper-skin tangerine, and also as the kid-glove orange, for its loose, pliable peel. The ponkan or Chinese honey tangerine is very popular around Melrose, Florida, where it was introduced from China by a missionary, Reverend Barrington, in 1883. It is easily peeled, much like a Satsuma mandarin, but has more flavor and grows true from the seeds.

Growing tangerines from the seeds may take longer, as usually seven or eight years are required before the first fruit, but the trees will be more cold hardy than a similar grafted tree (even if grafted onto the cold hardy trifoliate orange rootstock) and larger. Seedlings must be kept moist until planting. If they dry out they will not germinate. Oranges do not always come true from seeds due to pollination and hybridization problems, but nearly all tangerines can be grown true from seed, contrary to popular notions.

Tangerines are a good source of vitamin C, folate and beta-carotene.They also contain some potassium, magnesium and vitamins B-1, B-2 and B-3. Also contains Lutein and Zeaxanthin.

    TANGERINE ESSENTIAL OIL

Tangerine Essential Oil is cold pressed extracted from the rind (peel) and is a species variation of the mandarin orange. Tangerine variations can be of the species citrus nobilis or citrus reticulate so it can be a bit confusing. The citrus nobilis species is often associated with the tangor or temple orange. Tangerine oil is also known as Citrus Reticulata Blanco, Chen pi, Ju Hong, Citrus nobilis, C. madurensis, C. unshiu and C. deliciosa) of the Rutaceae family and is also known as European mandarin, tangerine, naartjie and true mandarin. Tangerine peel has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It is said to regulate and normalize the flow of qi (life force). In France and other parts of Europe, it is known particularly as a remedy for children and the elderly - both for digestive problems and to soothe overwrought young minds. Tangerine peel is an ingredient in many traditional Chinese tonics.

Tangerine is a native of China, but was taken to Europe in 1805 and a little later to America, who now is a large producer of this oil. The difference between tangerines and mandarins are the fact that tangerines are harvested around November while mandarins are harvested around February. Tangerines are also deeper orange in color and do not have pips, while mandarins are more yellow and do have pips. Mandarin and Tangerine have very similar properties and are often interchanged; however, there are some differences in chemistry. Mandarin essential oil contains esters while Tangerinedoes not. Mandarin oil also has greater alcohol content. And Mandarin is steam distilled from the leaves, not the rind. Mandarin has antifungal, antiseptic, antispasmodic properties in addition to the tangerine properties. But they both contain sedative properties that are calming to the nervous system, making them good for stress and settling emotions. Tangerine contains 85 to 93 percent limonene. Limonene has shown to protect against pancreatic, stomach, colon, skin, and liver cancers in animal studies. It is present in all the citrus essential oils as well as several species of tree oils (Palo Santo and White Fir). This tangy and zesty essential oil has some great properties to help relieve stress and digestive problems, but is mostly used to increase circulation to the skin, reducing fluid retention and to help prevent stretch marks.

Tangerine is a great digestive aid and enhances the circulatory system. It also is a cleanser like Grapefruit and Lemon, and has the ability to decongest the lymphatic system and alleviate water retention. Tangerine essential oil has been studied for its ability to settle the mind and ease stress and anxiety. Its sedative like properties bring emotional balance to the mind, relax the nervous system and are natural sleep aids. The simplest way to take advantage of the benefits of Tangerine every day is to use Tangerine Essential Oil. Tangerine oil is always available and the oil does not go bad when you do not use it right away.

    TANGERINE ESSENTIAL OIL PROPERTIES

Tangerine is almost same as Mandarin, with the exception that it is more orange in color, without pips and harvested in a different time of the year than Mandarins. Even the botanical name for Tangerines and Mandarins is same (Citrus Reticulata). Like mandarins, Tangerines also hold a place of significance in the Chinese culture and their herbal medicines.

New research from The University of Western Ontario has discovered a substance in Tangerine skins that not only prevents obesity in mice, but also offers protection against Type 2 diabetes, and even atherosclerosis, the underlying disease responsible for most heart attacks and strokes. Murray Huff, a vascular biology scientist at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, along with Erin Mulvihill, a PhD student, studied the effects of a flavonoid in Tangerines called Nobiletin. Their research is published in the Journal Diabetes.

Tangerine essential oil is sweet, tangy and a yellowish orange color extracted from the peel by cold expression. The health benefits of Tangerine Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties. The therapeutic properties of Tangerine oil are antiseptic, antispasmodic, cytophylactic, depurative, sedative, stomachic and tonic. The main chemical components of Tangerine oil are alpha-thujone, alpha-pinene, camphene, sabinene, beta-pinene, myrcene, limonene, gamma-terpinolene, gamma-terpinene, linalool, citronellal, terpineol-4-ol, nerol, neryl acetate, thymol, carvone, geranyl acetate, geraniol, and geranial as its chief components. It contains a powerful antioxidant d-limonene. This wonderfully sweet, fresh and citrusy top-note essential oil is thought to promote happiness, and help with nervousness and anxiety. For support of the nervous system, use in a diffuser or oil warmer to surround yourself with the aroma. The aroma is very popular with children, and can have the same relaxing effect as for adults.

  • Antiseptic: Staphylococcus Aureus is the species of bacteria which is responsible for this dreaded situation of infection called septic. Septic is a really nasty infection. It is not only limited to mere swelling and reddening of the wounds, with acute pain. If not checked, it quickly spreads to the other parts of the body and affects them, even if there are no wounds there. It causes acute pain, immobility and hardening of joints, acute contraction and cramp in muscles, swelling, redness, fever and convulsions. It readily attacks the newborn babies as their skin is vulnerable to infections. It also attacks them when they are detached from their mother's body by cutting the umbilical cord. The Essential Oil of Tangerine contains certain components which kill these bacteria and stops its spreading, thereby helping cure septic. It can be externally applied on open wounds as well as taken orally for having a uniform effect on the whole body.

  • Antispasmodic: Spasm may be a small word but its effects may be widespread and highly damaging. Spasm is not restricted to muscular cramps only. It can happen in respiratory system, digestive system and nervous system also and can cause breathing troubles, asthma, congestion, severe coughs, spasmodic diarrhea and cholera, nervous afflictions and convulsions. The Essential Oil of Tangerine induces relaxations in the organic systems named above and gives relief from spasm.

  • Cytophylactic: Certain components of this oil stimulate generation of new cells, or more precisely, cell division, and recycling of the cellular matter in the body. This does not only promote general growth of the body but also helps heal or repair the regular wear and tear and outstanding damages done to the body.

  • Depurative: An agent that purifies blood is called a depurative. Tangerine Essential Oil is one such depurative. It is used to reduce retention and helps in the excretion or removal of the toxic and unwanted substances such as uric acid, pollutants, extra salt and water from the body through sweat, urine and excreta etc. as well as increases the oxygen retaining capacity of the erythrocytes (red blood cells), thereby refreshing or purifying the blood.

  • Sedative: The Essential Oil of Tangerine soothes the nervous system and all types of inflammations and hyperactivity in all the systems functioning in our body, namely, the respiratory system, circulatory system, digestive system, nervous system and the excretory system. It sedates inflammation due to fever, intrusion of poisonous substances in the blood stream from external sources, convulsions, anxiety, stress, hypersensitivity of allergy etc. It also sedates depression, anger and impulsive responses, relieving stress and tension. Tangerine essential oil is peace and calming and excellent for calming dogs, horses and humans and is relaxing before bed time.

  • Stomachic: Being a stomachic, the Essential Oil of Tangerine keeps your stomach in good condition by maintaining proper flow of digestive juices into it, by maintaining the right balance between the acid and bile (so that excess acids are neutralized) and by curing the wounds, if any, in the stomach. It soothes the stomach and gives relief from inflammation. One thing must be understood, if somebody wants to have a trouble free health and a good physique, then he must keep his stomach fine tuned and this is exactly what this oil does. It helps your stomach keep functioning properly.

  • Tonic: One that tones and fortifies is a tonic and Tangerine Essential Oil has this property. It tones up all the functions in the body. It fine tunes the metabolic functions like decomposition of food and absorption of nutrients by toning up the liver, stomach and intestines, helping in growth and adding to strength; ensures proper excretion; promotes the endocrinal secretions of hormones and enzymes and also tones up the nervous system and keeps you more alert and active, and finally, boosts the immune system, protecting you from infections. When your body is feeling optimized it will have available the energy you may require in times of need.
  • Other Benefits: It improves circulation of blood and phlegm, boosts digestion, helps maintain oil and moisture balance in the skin and shows cicatrisant and emollient properties too. It also eases constipation and treats diarrhea, flatulence, rashes, dryness and cracking of skin, hair problems, dandruff etc. Place a drop of Tangerine oil in your water or your kids' water and drink the benefits of tangerine all day. Kids just seem to love the taste of tangerine and orange oils. It is a great way to get them to drink more water. Try a citrus essential oil blend that contains Tangerine, Orange, Grapefruit, and Spearmint essential oils. Place a drop in water to cool off from a hot day or create an uplifting sports drink, making your body happy.

  • Aromatic Affects: Tangerine oil's fresh and citrus aroma is very calming to the body and mind. It is gentle and subtle oil that supports us to embrace change with enthusiasm and grace. It releases old programming that prevents us from obtaining our goals and instills confidence that we can obtain our new goals and dreams. It also asks us to be fully present so we may be consciously aware of our physical, mental and emotional states.

This tangerine oil is pressed from the peel of ripe fruit. It is an orange-colored oil with the vibrant fragrance of fresh tangerines. The oil is used in colognes and occasionally in perfumes (See Mandarin Orange). Astringent (must be properly diluted) for oily skin. Tangerine is a delightful addition to children's aromatherapy blends. Aromatherapy benefits: cheering, uplifting.
