    ST. JOHN'S WORT HERBAL DESCRIPTION

    AN HERBAL ANTIDEPRESSANT

St. John's Wort is also known as Hypericum perforatum, Perforated bush, Hypericum, and Klamath weed.

Originally native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, St. John's Wort is a perennial plant with bright yellow star-shaped flowers are now readily found throughout North America, growing wild in neglected fields and along roadsides in much of the world.

St. John's Wort rose from virtual obscurity in the U.S. to become the fifth best selling dietary supplement in mainstream retail stores. Its rise to fame came after the national media reported clinical research showing that it was safe and effective for treating mild to moderate depression, and the Greek physician Hippocrates (ca. 460 to 377 B.C.E.) was one of the first to speak of the health benefits of St. Johns Wort, and it as been used to treat anxiety, neurosis, and depression since the time of Paracelsus (ca. 1493 to 1541 C.E.), when it was declared to be "arnica for the nerves." During the Middle Ages, this herb was used to "cast out demons," most likely an antiquated description for depression, St. John's Wort is one of the most highly documented herbal treatments with a scientific record that rivals many prescription drugs. In Germany, this herb is a prescription antidepressant.

In addition to its value as a psychiatric treatment, Some of the original folklore uses of this versatile plant were in treating bedwetting, rheumatism, and gout. St. John's Wort infused oil is made with the blossoms and Olive, Sunflower, or, preferably, Wheat Germ oil has been used for centuries for treating wounds and burns. St. John's Wort essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops of the plant.

ST. JOHN'S WORT USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

    HERBAL CONSTITUENTS

St. John's Wort constituents are hypericin and related compounds, rutin, bitters, and tannins. Herb and flowers contain various polyphenols:
    • Flavonoids: Epigallocatechin, rutin, hyperoside, isoquercetin, quercetin, quercitrin, 13,118-biapigenin, amentoflavone, astilbin, miquelianin.
    • Phenolic Acids: Chlorogenic acid, 3-O-coumaroylquinic acid.
    • Naphtodianthrones: Hypericin, pseudohypericin, protohypericin, protopseudohypericin.
    • Phloroglucinols: Hyperforin, adhyperforin.

The naphthodianthrones hypericin and pseudohypericin alon with the phloroglucinol derivative hyperforin are thought to be the active components. It also contains essential oils composed mainly of sesquiterpenes.

Chemical constituents of the essential oil are sesquiterpenes, caryophyllene, germacrene, alkanes, alcohols, oxides, 2% ketones.

    HERBAL PREPARATIONS

Parts used in preparations are the dried flowering tops and leaf. Traditionally used as a tea, sometimes available in tea bags; also used to make a red St. John's oil for use in liniments and lotions, but only from fresh material. May also be administered as a capsule or extract for convenience. St. John's Wort is also available as an essential oil.

    HERBAL HEALTH BENEFITS

St. John's Wort herb is mainly used for the treatment of mild to moderate depression. It can also be used for chronic insomnia and anxiety related to depression. St. John's Wort may also be effective in relieving seasonal affective disorder (SAD). St. John's Wort infused oil is useful in treating all inflamed nerve conditions such as neuralgia, sciatica, fibrositis, etc. The infused oil with added German Chamomile and Lavender essential oils, is useful in treating sunburn, since it actually lowers skin temperature.

A cool, bitter herb, St. John's Wort is sedative, anti-inflammatory, astringent, and most famously as an anti-depressant. A large volume of scientific research suggests that only a standardized extract delivering a rather high dose of hypericin, one of the active constituents found in St. John's Wort can effectively fight depression. St. John's wort as a whole herb (which includes phytochemicals such as hyperforin that have yet to be extensively researched) gives the body "just enough medicine" to overcome the physical aches and pains and mild viral infections that keep the brain from recovering from depression. Current research is also looking into St. John's Wort as a treatment for SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

St. John's Wort is being studied for effectiveness in the treatment of certain somatoform disorders. Results from the initial studies are mixed and further study is needed and being performed. A major constituent chemical, hyperforin, may be useful for treatment of alcoholism.

Hyperforin has also displayed antibacterial properties against gram-positive bacteria. Herbal effects that have been observed are generally attributed to hyperfroin due to its possible antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. For this reason hyperforin may be useful in the treatment of infected wounds and inflammatory skin diseases. In response to hyperforin's incorporation into a new bath oil, a study to assess potential skin irritation was conducted which found good skin tolerance of St. John's Wort. A research team from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) published a study entitled "Hypericum perforatum. Possible option against Parkinson's disease," which suggests that St. John's Wort has antioxidant active ingredients that could help reduce the neuronal degeneration caused by the disease.

Recent evidence suggests that daily treatment with St. John's Wort may improve the most common physical and behavioral symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome and alleviated age-related long-term memory impairment in rats.

BENEFITS OF ST. JOHN'S WORT ESSENTIAL & INFUSED OIL

St. John's Wort essential oil is made from cuttings taken from the top 6 to 12 inches of the plant, while in bloom. The oil is extruded under low heat and pressure in a still. While St. John's Wort capsules are best known for lifting the spirits, as an essential oil, it is often used in liniments or massage oils for muscle discomfort and even digestion. Topically in massage oil blended with Calendula (which heightens effectiveness in treating bruising) and Helichrysum (strengthens the effects of the blend) it is wonderful for burns, bruises, strains and sprains, sores and deep wounds with nerve damage, as well as sprains, tennis elbow and cramps. Used mostly as an infused oil or as a tincture of flowers (it is very red in color. If light in color, hypericin is weak). St. John's Wort essential or infused oils do not help depression as it has not of the antidepressant effect of the herbal extract. Hypericin and pseudohypericin are singled out as having great healing powers, but these constituents are not found in the essential or infused oils.

For aromatherapy, create a room spray, use in potpourri, herb pillows or sachets. For Herbal Remedy, create a liniment or ointment to ease discomfort. St. John's Wort essential and herbally infused oil relieves the pain and reduces the inflammation of afflicted muscles and joints. Those who suffer from gout, sciatica, neuralgia, and rheumatic pains find relief by rubbing in a few drops of this oil regularly. It is also used on mild burns, bruises and varicose veins. St. John's Wort infused oil with a few drops of Wintergreen or Sweet Birch essential oil added is helpful for relieving gout pain. Try combining it with some Calophyllum (Tamanu) for pain relief for arthritis and rheumatism.

The essential and infused oils are used for dandruff, oily hair, pimples, sores, eczema, inflamed skin, and stress. It is used to calm, soothe the intestines, uplift the mood, create euphoria, improve mental clarity, relieve muscular aches and pains, relieve menstrual discomfort, and headache relief. The essential oil is an antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory and it particularly helps tension headaches. It can break the bands of tension around the head. The essential oil fosters relaxation and healing. St. John's Wort essential oil is particularly good for menopause and the headaches associated with it.

Mentally, it fosters "I am loved. I love. I am love." Emotional uses include transitioning from tensed, stressed, feeling unloved or unwanted, to loving, loved, free, soaring, expansive.

The essential oil is very rare as it is distilled from the flowers and little oil is obtained from large quantities of flowers. Essential oil blends with with many other essential oils including Lavender, Chamomile, or any carrier essential oil. The essential oil is used in an aromatherapy lamp, bath, compress, diffuser, inhaler, light bulb ring, massage oil, mist spray and salve. The use of St. John's Wort infused oil as a carrier oil enhances both the analgesic and the anti-inflammatory effects of essential oils used with it.

MAKING ST. JOHN'S WORT INFUSED OIL

GROWING: The cultivation and concentration of St. John's Wort plants makes it grow taller and more vigorouosly than the scattered patchy wild clumps of plants found in the wild. Plant St. John's Wort into a organically prepared bed, whether from seed of the Hypericum perforatum (do not use other species) or from gathered and transplanted wild plants into this one spot. Plant them in full sun. The plants will blossom in July and August. St. John's Wort is useful as insectary, attracting beneficial predators and pollinators to your garden.

HARVESTING: The medicinal parts of the flowers and leaves will leave a reddish-purplish stain on your fingers as you carefully collect the plant tops. The chemical reaction between your base oil (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) and the plant, which turns it red, will take place ONLY when the plant is picked in Full Sun. If it is picked on a cloudy day, it will not turn out to be the same oil you want to make. Simply collect the aerial parts of the plant (leaves and flowers) while being careful not to disturb the plant roots.

INFUSING: Fill a quart jar about 3/4 full with plant material. Cover the plant material with your Extra Virgin Olive Oil as your base oil. Olive oil has natural antimicrobial properties so it tends to last longer than other oils. Seal the jar and place it in a sunny spot. The plant constituents will infuse into the oil within days and start to turn it blood red. In about 2 to 3 weeks, when it is nearly opaque red, the oil is ready. You can let it infuse longer for another week, if desired, to produce a deeper burgundy color. Strain out the plant material and compost it.

STORING & USE: It can be stored in a canning jar in a closed cupboard until you get a chance to use it in ointments, salves or balms, or you can keep it as an infused oil. The infused oil is good for treating wounds, cuts, bruises, burns, aches and pains, muscle and joint inflammations, nerve pain (neuralgia), sciatica and other injuries and ailments.

MAKING A TEA: When the flowers and leaves are taken internally as a tea or tincture, St. John's Wort has the effect of lifting the spirits and lightening the mood. I have found this to be more so the case with fresh tea. So, right now, in July and August, you can pick leaves and flowers and just brew up a really lovely tea that just makes ya feel good! Also, if you come upon a lot of it in one spot, consider drying it for use as a tea in the dark winter months.

    ST. JOHN'S WORT DOSAGE INFORMATION

    OIL RECOMMENDATIONS

St. John's Wort essential oil is for external use only. - just two or three drops are all that is needed.

St. John's Wort Herbal Oil is a mixture of a carrier oil infused with flowers. Use as needed for muscle massage and wound care. Follow instructions on commercial brand labels.

    HERBAL RECOMMENDATIONS

St. Johnís Wort extract is usually standardized to the substance hypercin. Most studies of St John's wort for treating depression used doses of 300 mg of an extract (standardized to 0.3 percent hypericin content) three times daily to achieve a therapeutic effect. Studies suggest to take from 300mg to 1,800 mg daily. There have not been any reports of overdose. The recommended dose of St. Johnís Wort is 300 mg 3 times a day of an extract standardized to contain 0.3% hypericin; however, a few new products on the market are standardized to hyperforin content of 2 to 3 percent, instead of hypercin, and should be taken at the same dosage.

If the herb bothers you, take it with food. It can take four weeks of usage to receive the full benefits of St. Johnís Wort.

ST. JOHN'S WORT SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTION INFORMATION

    SAFETY CONCERNS

St. John's Wort as a whole is generally well tolerated.

Do not take St. John's Wort essential oil internally as there could be serious drug interactions. The oil may be a photosensitizer and some allergic responses may occur. Use with caution and dilute with a carrier before applying to the skin.

The most common adverse effects reported with the use of St. John's Wort supplements are gastrointestinal symptoms, dizziness, confusion, tiredness and sedation. It also decreases the levels of estrogens, such as estradiol, by speeding up its metabolism, and should not be taken by women on contraceptive pills as it upregulates the P450 system of the liver.

St. John's Wort extracts may rarely increase sensitivity to sunlight and risk of sunburn (photosensitivity), but this is extremely rare when the whole herb is used. This can lead to visual sensitivity to light and to sunburns in situations that would not normally cause them . Related to this, recent studies concluded that the extract reacts with light, both visible and and ultraviolet, to produce free radicals, molecules that can damage the cells of the body. These can react with vital proteins in the eye that, if damaged, precipitate out, causing cataracts. This finding is contradicted by the results of another recent study, which found that St. John's Wort inhibits free radical production in both cell-free and human vascular tissue, revealing antioxidant properties of the compound.

St. John's Wort is associated with aggrevating psychosis in schizophrenia.

St. John's Wort has been shown to cause multiple drug interactions through induction of the cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP3A4, but also CYP2C9. This results in the increased metabolism of those drugs, resulting in decreased concentration and clinical effect. The principal constituents thought to be responsible are hyperforin and amentoflavone. St. John's Wort also has been shown to cause drug interactions though the induction of the P-glycoprotein (P-gp) efflux transporter. Increased P-gp expression results in decreased absorption and increased clearance of those drugs, which leads to lower clinical concentrations and efficacy.

St. John's Wort should not be used with a MAO or Protease inhibitor. If you are taking antidepressant drugs, MAO inhibitors, SSRIs, and tricylics, or the drugs Tramadol or Imitrex, do not use St. Johnís Wort at the same time. Let your system completely flush those drugs out of your system before starting with the herb. If you are using Digoxin, cyclosporine, protease, inhibitors, oral contraceptives, amitriptyline, Coumadin (warfarin), theophylline, chemotherapy drugs, olanzapine or closapine, or any critical medicaton, St. Johnís Wort may cause the drugs to be less effective.

St. Johnís Wort may have an additive effect if you are taking medications that cause sun sensitivity such as sulfa drugs, and the anti-inflammatory medicaton Feldene (piroxicam), as well as Prilosec or Prevacid.

St. John's Wort is mainly used for the treatment of mild to moderate depression. It has been proven in many European clinical studies to be a natural antidepressant and is widely used for this reason. St. John's Wort is the most popular anti-depressant in Germany, where one brand alone outsells Prozac seven to one. In 1996, the British Medical Journal summarized the results of over 20 studies on the herb which compared it to placebos and anti-depressant drugs. St. John's Wort not only outdid the placebos, it showed similar results to the drugs, but with fewer side effects. St. John's Wort contains the compound Hypericin which has been used as an anti-depressant since 1942. The tranquilizing quality of this compound increases blood flow to stressed tissue. This sedative effect relieves pain, anxiety and nervous tension. Among the uses for St. John's Wort are a variety of conditions such as chronic fatigue and mental burnout. This herb contains two substances, hypericin and pseudohypericin, that inhibit retroviral infections and could be useful in the treatment of AIDS. It can also be used for chronic insomnia and anxiety related to depression. St. John's Wort may also be effective in relieving seasonal affective disorder (SAD). St. John's Wort extract is usually standardized to the substance hypericin. The recommended dose of St. John's Wort is 300 mg 3 times a day of an extract standardized to contain 0.3 percent hypericin; however, a few new products on the market are standardized to hyperforin content of 2 to 3 percent, instead of hypercin, and should be taken at the same dosage. Caution: Individuals with HIV have an increased risk for sunburn and should avoid this herb. This herb may increase the chance of developing sun blisters if you are out in the sun too long. If you decide to use this herb, avoid sun exposure. Do not use St. John's Wort if you are on prescription antidepressants or any medication that interacts with MAO inhibitors. Use with caution during pregnancy. Some research also suggests that St. John's Wort may reduce the growth of tumors. Consult with your health care provider if you are using anti-depressant medication before using this herb.
