    PERIWINKLE HERBAL DESCRIPTION

    AN ASTRINGENT & DIURETIC

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is also known as Creeping Vinca, Lesser Periwinkle, Dwarf Periwinkle, Small Periwinkle, Common Periwinkle, Vinpocetine, Madagascar, Rosy Periwinkle and sometimes in the United States, Myrtle or Creeping Myrtle.

The common Periwinkle plant (Vinca minor) is often seen creeping down steep hillsides and banks, offering a green growing affect in areas which might otherwise be bare. It is an exceptional erosion control plant. Periwinkle is also used as a spreading shrub in USDA garden zones 4 to 8. Periwinkle is most often grown as a ground cover and it takes its common name from the attractive flowers that dot the green foliage in April to May, appearing in the color of periwinkle blue. There are more than 30 varieties of Periwinkle, some with variegated foliage and other colors of blossoms.

Vinca minor is a species of flowering plant native to central and southern Europe, from Portugal and France north to the Netherlands and the Baltic States, east to the Caucasus, and also southwestern Asia in Turkey. It is a trailing, viny subshrub, spreading along the ground and rooting along the stems to form large clonal colonies and occasionally scramblihng up to 16 inches high, but never twinihng or climing. The leaves are evergreen, opposite, approximately 3/4 to 1 3/4 inches long and 3/8 to 1 inch broad, glossy dark green with a leathery texture and an entire margin.

The flowers are solitary in the leaf axils and are produced mainly from early spring to mid summer but with a few flowers still produced into the autumn. The flowers are a violet-purple (pale purple or white in some cultivated selections), approximately 3/4 to 1 1/4 inch in diameter, with a five lobed corolla. The fruit is a pair of follicles approximately a inch long, containing numerous seeds. The closely related species Vinca major is similar, but larger in all parts, and also has relatively broader leaves with a hairy stem.

    GROWING PERIWINKLE

The Periwinkle broadleaf evergreen plant grows easily and care most often involves keeping the prolific spreader in check. The species is commonly grown as groundcover in temperate gardens for its evergreen foliage, spring and summer flowers, ease of culture, and dense habit that smothers most weeds. Periwinkle, once established, is drought resistant and needs little other care if properly sited in the landscape. Periwinkle care after planting may include the removal of tall weeds in the area. Once established, growing periwinkle will likely shade out future growth of weeds and eliminate this chore.

The periwinkle plant grows best in a partially shaded area in acidic soil; however, it can thrive in a variety of sunlight and soil conditions. Growing periwinkle in partial shade creates more vigorous growth. In many instances, extreme vigor may not be desirable unless the periwinkle plant needs to cover a large area. One small plant can spread to 8 feet across.

Growing periwinkle as a ground cover is common as it rarely reaches more than 4 inches in height. Periwinkle is best used for controlling erosion as described above. Do not plant near other specimens in the flower bed or garden, as it may overtake and choke out valuable plantings. This plant may be used as a climber on a non-living support and is useful for blocking views when used in this way.

Before planting periwinkle, make sure it is what you want in the area, as it is difficult to remove once established. Periwinkle appears low on the exotic invasive list, but can escape cultivation in the garden. It is rarely found escaping into undisturbed woodlands. Periwinkle ground cover should not be confused with annual periwinkle, also known as Madagascar Periwinkle, as annual periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus) is a different plant.

The species has few pests or diseases outside its native range and is widely naturalized and classified as an invasive species in parts of North America. Invasion can be restricted by removal of rooting stems in spring. Once established, it is difficult to eradicate, as its waxy leaves shed most water-based herbicide sprays. Removal involves cutting, followed by immediate application of concentrated glyphosate or triclopyr to the cut stems. Repeated chemical treatments may be necessary, along with digging up the roots where feasible.

    periwinkle variety

    CULTIVARS

There are numerous cultivars, with different flower colors and variegated foliage. Many have a less vigorous habit than the species, and are therefore more suitable for smaller gardens. Argenteovariegata cultivar has creamy white margins on its leaves. The Atropurpurea cultivar has burgundy-purple flowers. The Azurea Flore Pleno cultivar has double blue flowers. The La Grave variety is also known as Bowles's Variety or Bowles's Blue and has violet flowers.

PERIWINKLE USES, HEALTH BENEFITS, & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

    TRADITIONAL USES

Periwinkle is an herb. The parts that grow above the ground are used to make medicine. Do not confuse periwinkle with Madagascar periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus).

Traditionally, Periwinkle has been used to treat a variety of conditions. Native Indians used the juice from Periwinkle leaves to treat wasp stings. Hawaiians boiled the plant to make a poultice to stop bleeding. In China, and Central and South America, it was used as an astringent and diuretic. They also used it to treat coughs, lung congestion, inflammation and sore throat. In the Caribbean, an extract from the flowers was used to make a solution to treat eye irritation and infections. The Europeans used Periwinkle as a folk remedy for treating diabetes, but they also called it the magic plant, because they thought it could ward off evil spirits. The French called it the “violet of the sorcerers.”

    BRAIN HEALTH

Despite serious safety concerns, periwinkle is used for brain health by increasing blood circulation in the brain, supporting brainmetabolism, increasing mental productivity, preventing memory and concentration problems and feebleness, improving memory and thinking ability, and preventing early aging of brain cells).

    BLOOD PRESSURE & INFLAMMATION

Periwinkle can lower blood pressure. It can also help reduce swelling (inflammation) and have a drying (astringent) effect on the tissues. Periwinkle is also used for treating diarrhea, vaginal discharge, throat ailments, tonsillitis, chest pain, high blood pressure, sore throat, intestinal pain and swelling (inflammation), toothache, and water retention (edema). It is also used for promoting wound healing, improving the way the immune system defends the body, and for "blood-purification."

    DIETARY SUPPLEMENT

A chemical in periwinkle called vincamine can be converted in the laboratory to the compound vinpocetine, which is marketed as a dietary supplement.

    CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS

Rosy Periwinkle produces 70 known alkaloids, some of which are used by the pharmaceutical industry for the treatment of childhood leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, testicular cancer and cancerous tumors. Taken as a daily supplement, it improves the blood supply to the brain, increases oxygen and glucose for the brain to use, helps prevent abnormal coagulation of blood, and it raises brain levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Externally, Rosy Periwinkle leaves poultices can be used to relieve wasp stings and eye inflammation, and to stop bleeding. Ointments can be used externally as well.

Chemical constituents of Vinca minor include vincamine is the molecule responsible for Vinca's nootropic activity. Other alkaloids include reserpine, reserpinine, akuammicine, majdine, vinerine, ervine, vineridine, tombozine, vincamajine, vincanine, vincanidine, vincamone, apovincamine, vincaminol, desoxyvincaminol, vincorine and perivincine. Vinpocetine (brand names: Cavinton, Intelectol; chemical name: ethyl apovincaminate) is a semisynthetic derivative alkaloid of vincamine.

POLLY BLOCK'S METHOD OF BLOOD CLEANSING
    FOR RH-NEGATIVE MOMS

In 'Polly's Birth Book' by Polly Block, that there are a number of women who had begun their childbearing years RH-. When they had continual problems with pregnancies, they began seriously to build their blood and their general health. In each case physicians, not the mothers, discovered a change in their RH status. They were now RH+. The doctors were astounded and called for additional tests and reports. They could not understand why a mother who had been RH- for years was now RH+. These women all shared something in common. In each instance, these women had concentrated on purifying their blood by changing their diets so they had exceptional nutritional intake. They ate fruit for one week. Then they ate fresh, raw, homegrown foods or organic foods. They eliminated sugar, coffee, alcohol, and soft drinks, as well as white flour, prepared foods and refined products from their diets. They used herbal lower bowel tonic and had occasional enemas to keep their bowels evacuated thoroughly during body cleanses. They used herbs to cleanse and build the blood. Several of these mothers gave Periwinkle special credit. They ate foods that built blood: Grape juice, molasses, beets, etc. There seems to be no mention about how long it took to bring about the change in RH status, as there are no records.

This is the protocol as given in Polly Block's book, however, many of these herbs should not be used during pregnancy and may have adverse effects on your pregnancy. If you are going to try this method of 'blood cleansing', do it before becoming pregnant or after stopping lactation. Many of these herbs are also used as hormonal balancers. It would be wise to consult with a herbal health practitioner before starting any cleansing program.

    PERIWINKLE DOSAGE INFORMATION

    SUPPLEMENT FORMS

Periwinkle comes in various forms. Typical preparations more often used include tincture, encapsulated pills, or served as a tea. For best results, read and follow product label directions. Do not take more than recommended dosage.

The garden periwinkle is the source of a chemical that can be turned into vinpocetine, a natural treatment for aging minds. Originating in Madagascar but now growing wild in warm climates around the world, periwinkle has enjoyed a variety of medicinal applications. The periwinkle contains vincamine, precursor chemical vinpocetine, in its leaves and seeds. The plant parts used are the leaves and seeds.

    PERIWINKLE SAFETY & INTERACTION INFORMATION

    SAFETY CONCERNS

    PERIWINKLE HERB SAFETY

Periwinkle herb is the source of vinpocetine; it is not pure vinpocetine. If you use the whole herb you are relying on a rounded blend of healing chemicals found in the minimally processed plant. Periwinkle herb, as used per instruction, does not cause any known interactions with blood thinning medications (such as aspirin, Coumarin, Plavix, Ticlid, or Trental), although vinpocetine extracted from it does. Vinpocetine can cause either increased or decreased bleeding depending on the medication; this is why whole periwinkle is preferred to concentrated extracts of isolated constituents.

Side effects from oral use of Periwinkle herb have been slight and usually disappear after taking the supplement for awhile or after discontinuing use. Some people noted a brief drop in blood pressure or faster heart rate after starting this supplement. Periwinkle herb has not been found to interact with other drugs. Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known.

    PERIWINKLE CONCENTRATED EXTRACTS SAFETY

Periwinkle concentrated extracts containing higher dosages of chemical constitutents or products with isolated constituents may be considered unsafe at high dosages. These can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and other stomach and intestinal symptoms. It can also cause nerve, kidney, and liver damage. Large amounts can cause very low blood pressure. People with certain conditions are especially at risk for harmful side effects of high concentration extracts or overdosing.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding, Periwinkle concentrated extracts are considered unsafe and should not be use.
Periwinkle has a drying effect on tissues. This means it can make constipation worse.
Periwinkle can lower blood pressure. If you already have low blood pressure, using periwinkle can make it drop too low.
There is a concern that it might interfere with blood pressure control during and after surgery. Stop using periwinkle at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.

    Moderate Interactions - Cautions

Medications for high blood pressure (Antihypertensive drugs) interacts with Periwinkle concentrated extracts.

Periwinkle seems to decrease blood pressure. Taking periwinkle concentrated extracts along with high blood pressure medications might cause your blood pressure to go too low. Some medications for high blood pressure include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

    PERIWINKLE HERBAL PRODUCTS

Periwinkle acts as an internal astringent, helping to check excessive menstrual flow, or urinary problems such as hematuria. Digestive conditions including colitis or diarrhea will benefit by the reduction of fluid or blood loss. Periwinkle is also used as an internal styptic in nose bleeds, bleeding gums, mouth ulcers and sore throats. Lesser periwinkle's major alkaloid, vincamine, has vasodilating, blood thinning, and memory enhancing actions. Double-blind studies have shown it to increase the flow of blood to the brain, thus alleviating vascular dementia, Alzheimer's, memory and hearing loss. Other periwinkle alkaloids have indicated usefulness for glaucoma. It is periwinkle's tannins that are astringent. The small periwinkle (Vinca minor) possesses all of the virtues of the other kind (Vinca major) and may very properly supply its place. Used in herbal practice for its astringent and tonic properties in menorrhagia and in hemorrhages generally, for obstruction of mucus in the intestines and lungs, diarrhea, congestions, etc, Periwinkle is a good remedy.

The nutrients in BrainWave Plus collectively support blood circulation, neurotransmitter activity and production, which in turn supports mental alertness, healthy moods, memory and learning. BrainWave Plus includes Huperzine A (Huperzia seratta), a traditional Chinese herb (Chien Tseng Ta) which appears to be a potent acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, which can avoid the degradation of endogenous acetylcholine by binding to the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. In China, a double blind placebo controlled human study found Huperzine A to have significant beneficial effects in quality of life and memory retrieval. CDP-Choline (Cytidine 5-diphosphocholine) quickly crosses the blood-brain barrier, increasing levels of neurotransmitters, enhancing cerebral energy metabolism, and activating the synthesis of critical components of cell membranes. Vinpocetine, an extract of Periwinkle, supports memory function by increasing circulation in the brain and increasing the rate at which brain cells produce ATP. Experiments have shown it to be protective to brain cells. Baco Pin (Bacopa monniera) is an Ayurvedic herb used in India for 3,000 years for enhancing memory capacity, and to support intellectual and cognitive functions. The alkaloids in Baco Pin, bacosides are known as memory chemicals in India, and research has shown that bacosides are involved in the synthesis of new neurons, which supports maintenance of neuronal integrity.
