PEPPERMINT - HERBAL OVERVIEW
PEPPERMINT
Mentha Piperita Mint, Menthol, Balm Mint, White Peppermint, American Peppermint, Northern Mint, Lamb Mint, Brandy Mint, and Black Peppermint
PEPPERMINT PLANT DESCRIPTION
The world's most familiar "mint scent" is the aroma of peppermint. In Greek mythology, Menthe was turned into a plant (peppermint) when Proserpine, in a jealous rage, found out that Pluto was in love with her. Even earlier, Assyrians used it as an offering to their fire god. Peppermint contains an essential oil that is unique to other mints for its quality and flavor, and artificial mint compounds do not effectively duplicate its aroma or medicinal effects. Peppermint is one of the most popular herbs in teas, candies, and chewing gums. Cultivation and oil production started in the US in the 1790's, and was a major export business by the mid 1800's. The U.S. is still the world's leading producer of peppermint oil, making an average of 4,117 tons annually. Although the traditional use is a tea to improve digestion, most clinical trials have studied the oil in enteric-coated capsules used internally to treat irritable bowel syndrome and externally to treat tension headache. Some companies in Japan are said to pipe peppermint oil into their AC system to invigorate their workers, and thereby increase productivity.
Authentic peppermint is a cross of several different varieties of mint. First identified in England in 1696, this aromatic plant is particularly valuable for digestive problems, as it soothes the muscles and lining of the colon. It can also relieve headaches and colds.
Genuine peppermint is a member of the labiate family and grows to 1 to 3 feet in height. Its crinkled-looking dark green leaves are strongly aromatic and have extremely refreshing taste.
PLANT PARTS USED
Only the leaves of the peppermint plant are used medicinally. They are often used in pharmaceutical products. The leaves are harvested just before the plant flowers. Leaves are used fresh or dried. Essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves. Typical preparations include tea as the most common and best employed use of this ingredient. The oil is used as flavoring in toothpaste, dental creams, mouthwash, cough candies, chewing gum, and baked goods.
PEPPERMINT CONSTITUENTS / COMPONENTS
Peppermint contains an abundance of essential oil (up to 2.5 percent in the dried leaf), as well as tannins, flavonoids and bitter constituents. The most important part of the peppermint oil is menthol (ca. 50 percent), which has antispasmodic and slightly anesthetic qualities. Therefore, it can help relieve intestinal gas. The oil also contains menthone (10 to 30 percent), menthyl esters (up to 10 percent) and several monoterpene derivatives (pulegone, piperitone, menthofurane). Traces of jasmone (0.1 percent) give the oil its characteristically minty" scent. The aromatic chemicals in the mint are concentrated when the plant is grown in areas with long, warm, bright summer days.
PEPPERMINT HISTORY
The French called Mint "the plant of happiness," and the Roman scholar Pliny said the mere smell of Mint could invigorate the soul. Pliny tells us that the Greeks and Romans crowned themselves with Peppermint at their feasts and adorned their tables with its sprays, and that their cooks flavored both their sauces and their wines with its essence. The ancient Greeks used this fragrant herb in their temple rite and as a symbol of hospitality. Two species of mint were used by the ancient Greek physicians, but some writers doubt whether either was the modern Peppermint, though there is evidence that M. piperita was cultivated by the Egyptians. It is mentioned in the Icelandic Pharmacopoeias of the thirteenth century, but only came into general use in the medicine of Western Europe about the middle of the eighteenth century, and then was first used in England.
In the 1600s, Peppermint was deliberately bred in England, and became the tasty plant known so well today, but only became important medicinally around the 18th century.
The United States, however, are now the most important producers of Peppermint oil, producing - mostly in Michigan, where its cultivation was introduced in 1855, Indiana, the western districts of New York State, and to a smaller extent in Ohio - rather under half of the world's total output of the oil. The whole of the Peppermint cultivation is confined to the north-east portion of the United States, and the extreme south of Canada, where some is grown in the province of Ontario. The first small distillery was erected in Wayne County, New York State, in the early part of last century, and at the present day the industry has increased to such an extent, that there are portions of Michigan where thousands of acres are planted with nothing else but Peppermint.
There are many species of Mint; however, the Peppermint and Japanese Mints are the most economically important. Both of them contain Menthol, which is the primary medicinal benefit of this plant. Menthol promotes digestion by stimulating the flow of bile to the stomach, and it also calms the muscles of the digestive system to help relieve stomach upsets. Spearmint does not contain Menthol and is used mainly for flavoring.
Some of the information and the above history about peppermint was obtained from Botanical.com: A Modern Herbal - Peppermint.
PEPPERMINT USES
Folk medicine has valued peppermint for a variety of medicinal properties.
To begin with, peppermint leaves have both sedative and antispasmodic qualities that may help relieve menstrual cramps.
When taken internally, peppermint may ease the pain of acute and chronic inflammations of the intestinal walls and relieve diarrhea, flatulence and nausea. Mint is used for indigestion and colic. Peppermint can also promote the function of the digestive system. Take it right after a heavy meal to stimulate the production and flow of bile, which eases digestion.
Mint tea works well in treating colds, sore throat, minor mouth or throat irritations, headaches and migraines, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, and stomachache.
Peppermint oil has been recognized by Germany's Commission E as effective in treating colicky pain in the digestive tract, specifically irritable bowel syndrome, and in relieving mucus congestion of the lungs and sinuses caused by colds and flu. Some evidence suggests it might be helpful for gallstones and in treating candida infections, but results are not complete at this time.
Used topically, the plant may counteract nerve pain, headache, migraine and inflammation of the gums. It is also found in products used for the relief of muscle aches, sprains, and similar conditions.
Finally, when you have a cold, inhale the scent of peppermint to clear a stuffy nose and help break up congestion in the respiratory tract.

Taken in normal doses, enteric-coated Peppermint oil is believed to be fairly safe in healthy adults. Peppermint oil can be toxic if normal doses are exceeded. An excessive intake of Peppermint oil will produce nausea, loss of appetite, heart problems, loss of balance, and other nervous system problems.
