    MANGO HERBAL DESCRIPTION

The Mango tree (Mangifera indica L.) is native to southern Asia, especially Burma and eastern India.

The Mango tree grows to up to 115 to 130 feet tall with a crown radious of about 33 feet. The trees are long lived, as some specimens still fruit after 300 years. The taproot descends to a depth of 10 feet with profuse wide spreading feeder roots and numerous anchor roots. The leaves are evergreen, alternate, simple, and about 5 to 13 inches long and 2.5 to 6 inches broad. When the leaves are young, they are orange pink, rapidly changing to a dark glossy red and then dark green as they mature. The flowers are produced in terminal panicles between 3.9 to 15.7 inches long. Each flower is small and white with five petals with a mild sweet odor similar to Lily of the Valley. Over 400 varieties of Mangoes are known, many of which ripen in summer, while some give double crop. The fruit takes three to six months to ripen.

    mango tree

The Mango is a juicy, tropical stone fruit belonging to the genus Mangifera, consisting of numerous tropical fruiting trees, cultivated mostly for edible fruit. The majority of these species are foud in nature as wild mangoes. The Mango is mainly found in regions with a tropical climate. In several cultures, its fruit and leaves are titually used as floral decorations at weddings, public celebrations, and religious ceremonies.

The ripe fruit varies in size and color. Cultivars are variously yellow, orange, red or green, and carry a single flat, oblong pit that can be fibrous or hairy on the surface, and which does not separate easily from the pulp. Ripe, unpeeled Mangoes give off an distinctive resinous, sweet smell. Inside the pit is a thin lining covering a single seed containing the plant embryo.

During times of famine in India, the kernels extracted from Mango seeds were ground into flour and used as food. All parts of the Mango tree can be used medicinally. The skin of Mango has been used to treat profuse and long menstrual flow, and uterine hemorrhages caused by miscarriages. It has antiseptic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immuno-corrective properties. Mango twigs and leaves can be used to treat bronchitis and toothaches.

MANGO USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

The mango is still considered an exotic fruit by many people born and raised in the western world. Mangoes have long been eaten by people of Indian and Asian cultures, not only for their delicious sweet-tart flavor, but also for their many health benefits.

    MANGO USES IN CUISINE

Mangoes are generally sweet, although the taste and texture of the flesh varies across cultivars; some have a soft, pulpy texture similar to an overripe plum, while others are firmer, like a cantaloupe or avocado, and some may have a fibrous texture. The skin of unripe, pickled, or cooked mango can be consumed, but has the potential to cause contact dermatitis of the lips, gingiva, or tongue in susceptible people.

Mangoes are widely used in cuisine. Sour, unripe mangoes are used in chutneys, athanu, pickles, side dishes, or may be eaten raw with salt, chili, or soy sauce. Mangoes can be used to make summer drinks and smoothies. Mango pulp made into jelly or cooked with red gram dhal and green chillies may be served with cooked rice. Mango lassi is popular throughout South Asia, prepared by mixing ripe mangoes or mango pulp with buttermilk and sugar. Ripe mangoes are also used to make curries. Aamras is a popular thick juice made of mangoes with sugar or milk, and is consumed with chapatis or pooris. The pulp from ripe mangoes is also used to make jam called mangada. Andhra aavakaaya is a pickle made from raw, unripe, pulpy, and sour mango, mixed with chili powder, fenugreek seeds, mustard powder, salt, and groundnut oil. Mango is also used in Andhra to make dahl preparations. Gujaratis use mango to make chunda (a grated mango delicacy).

Mangoes are used in preserves such as moramba, amchur (dried and powdered unripe mango), and pickles, including a spicy mustard-oil pickle and alcohol. Ripe mangoes are often cut into thin layers, desiccated, folded, and then cut. These bars are similar to dried guava fruit bars available in some countries. The fruit is also added to cereal products such as muesli and oat granola. Mangoes are often prepared charred in Hawaii.

Unripe mango may be eaten with bagoong (especially in the Philippines), fish sauce, or with dash of salt. Dried strips of sweet, ripe mango (sometimes combined with seedless tamarind to form mangorind) are also popular. Mangoes may be used to make juices, mango nectar, and as a flavoring and major ingredient in ice cream and sorbetes.

Mango is used to make juices, smoothies, ice cream, fruit bars, raspados, aguas frescas, pies, and sweet chili sauce, or mixed with chamoy, a sweet and spicy chili paste. It is popular on a stick dipped in hot chili powder and salt or as a main ingredient in fresh fruit combinations. In Central America, mango is either eaten green mixed with salt, vinegar, black pepper, and hot sauce, or ripe in various forms. Toasted and ground pumpkin seed (pepita) with lime and salt are eaten green mangoes.

Pieces of mango can be mashed and used as a topping on ice cream or blended with milk and ice as milkshakes. Sweet glutinous rice is flavored with coconut, then served with sliced mango as a dessert. In other parts of Southeast Asia, mangoes are pickled with fish sauce and rice vinegar. Green mangoes can be used in mango salad with fish sauce and dried shrimp. Mango with condensed milk may be used as a topping for shaved ice.

    HEALTH BENEFITS

Mangoes can help ease digestion. They contain a digestive enzyme similar to papain (found in papaya), which is a soothing digestive aid. These are proteolytic enzymes that break down proteins and are effective meat tenderizers. Mango fruit stimulates the metabolism and purifies the intestinal tract. Mangoes contain phenolic compounds, which are compounds that are potent antioxidants. In India, Mangoes are used as "blood builders" as they are high in iron and may be suggested as a remedy against anemia. They are also high in Beta Carotene, Potassium, Magnesium, and B-vitamins, Vitamin C and a great source of dietary fiber.

    MANGO FRUIT SMOOTHIE RECIPE

2 Mangoes (12 ounces after it is cut up)
1 Navel Orange, peeled and quartered
    1 Apple, quartered and cored
    1 16-ounce bottle Mango Kombucha

Quarter and core a apple, then cut it into eights. Peel the skin off a mango and cut all the fruit away from the pit. Place the cut up mango, orange and apple in a blender. Pour the Mango Kombucha over the top and blend until smooth. Serve immediately or keep refrigerated up to two days.

Tips: Honeycrisp, Pink Lady or Granny Smith apples are recommended. Champagne Mangoes (Ataulfo Mangoes) are suggested because they have less fibrous strands and a sweet addictive flavor, however any Mango will work. In place of Mango Kombucha, Coconut Milk can be use for a tropical flavor, or 1 cup of ice cubes for a frosty version in warmer weather.

    mango butter

    MANGO BUTTER FOR SKIN CARE

Mango Butter from de-shelled fruit seed kernels has important emollient and regenerative properties, and is highly oxidative. It also protects against UV radiation. Mango Butter is an ingredient in skin care products, lotions, massage creams, and hair products. Mango Butter is cold-press extracted from the seed kernels of the Mango Tree. It is solid but soft with a slightly sweet aroma. It's protective effect against UV radiation makes it a great cream additive (or used "straight") for dried, peeling, itchy skin from sunburn. It's hardness, and ability to melt at skin temperatures, makes Mango Butter generally a great additive for lip balms, lotion bars, and soap. With it's good emolliency and regenerative abilities, Mango Butter reduces skin cell degeneration, restores elasticity, and provides relief from dryness due to eczema and psoriasis.

Mango oil is an oil fraction obtained during the processing of Mango Butter. Mango oil is a seed oil extracted from the stone of the fruit of the Mangifera indica. The oil is semi-solid at room temperatures, but melts on contact with skin, making it appealing for baby creams, suncare balms, hair products, and other moisturizing products. The oil is a soft yellow color with a melting point of 23-27°C.

As you experiment with this butter you are likely to discover additional uses. Dermatologists often recommend Mango Butter for the treatment of wrinkles, as most people who use it will notice decreased signs of aging and the disappearance of lines and wrinkles within 4 to 6 weeks of daily use.

It generally has a rich creamy color and is hard at room temperature. It will liquefy at body temperature though or upon contact with skin and subsequently disperses smoothly, leaving a protective, emollient layer.

Mango oil contains mangiferin and a resinol called mangiferol. Those with a history of contact dermatitis induced by urushiol (an allergen found in poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac) may be most at risk for mango contact dermatitis.
