    JASMINE HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum) is also known as Wild Jasmine. For early settlers in America, the rootstock of Wild Jasmine was valued as a calmative, pain-reliever, and aphrodisiac. The Indians used it to suppress milk production, and as a treatment for ringworm and tapeworm. Wild Jasmine was given the nickname "electrical fever remedy" because at one time, a patient suffering with a very serious bilious fever, was accidentally treated with an infusion made from the rootstock of Wild Jasmine. The patient became paralyzed and lost consciousness; however, when he awoke he was completely cured.

In India, Jasmine was called the "Queen of the Night" because its earthy scent was thought to be an aphrodisiac. Native to Arabia, India and China, the flowers of Jasminum grandiflorum are harvested before dawn so that the delicate aroma won't evaporate in the sun. Perhaps this is why Jasmine has long possessed an air of mystery, sensuality and romance.

The Jasmine (Jasminum sp.) is perennial climbing plant in the family Oleaceae with sweet, highly scented flowers. It is native to the Himalayas, and is considered sacred throughout the region, specifically in India where it is the sacred flower of Kama, the god of love. It is intertwined into bridal flowers at weddings, and woven into garlands for important guests at diplomatic functions.

Historically, Jasmine has been reputed to be an aphrodisiac, and is said to have a marked effect on frigidity and impotence. It is grown for perfumery in France, and added to alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, toiletries, moisturizing lotions, and aromatherapy oils. It is utilized in aromatherapy.

    JASMINE ABSOLUTE ESSENTIAL OIL

The absolute oil is extracted using a special solvent (ethyl alcohol is commonly used as a solvent) that is later evaporated through distillation. This yields a rich, heavy and thick oil with a floral scent - one of the most popular ancient oils used in perfumes. A pure oil is extremely expensive with a price tag of about $5,000 for a 16 ounce bottle of Jasmine Absolute Essential Oil. Most commercial Jasmine oils have been prediluted with a carrier oil, such as Jojoba or Grapeseed oil before sale to bring the price down. Pure absolute oil will always be more expensive. If the price is low, you can be sure the oils are diluted. Perfume or fragrance oil blends are often a mixture of pure natural oil with synthetic oil and a carrier oil. Read labels when purchasing to make sure you are getting the right oil you are looking to buy.

JASMINE USES, HEALTH BENEFITS, & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Today Jasmine tea is used for its calming affect, especially after dinner, as well as for its aphrodisiacal qualities. Jasmine oil soothes the skin and reduces menstrual cramps. The oil, when used in aromatherapy, can treat depression and nerve conditions. Jasmine is also used to treat headaches, spasms, and neuralgias (encephalitis) associated with the flu.

Jasmine oil's healing properties are many: Familiar to midwives as a "woman's oil," it can be used during labor to induce contractions, ease cramps, stimulate milk production and banish fear. In addition, Jasmine is known to encourage self-confidence, optimism and intuition. The oil's antispasmodic, analgesic and sedative properties help relieve pain, muscle spasms and tension. Furthermore, its antiseptic and conditioning qualities make it an excellent remedy for acne or dry skin.

Jasmine constituents include Alpha-terpineol, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, benzyl acetate, benzyl alcohol, eugenol, farnesol, geraniol, jasmone, linalyl acetate, nerolidol, salicylic acid, vanillin. Parts used are the dried flowers in typical preparations such as creams, washes, liniments, teas, and infusions.
There is a common misunderstanding in the herb market concerning dried Jasmine flowers, in that they impart very little fragrance. While most people would assume that the dried flowers are similar to the overpowering aroma of fresh flowers, this is simply not the case. The waxy exude on jasmine flowers which give it the scent we are all familiar with is incredibly volatile and will dissipate within days of being dried, and the result is a dried flower with only a hint of aroma still lingering.

    THERAPEUTIC EFFECT

Jasmine oil is used for menstrual cramps, labor pains, dry skin, eczema, stretch marks, milk production, coughs, mild depression and sleeplessness. It contains benzyl acetate, geraniol, linalool, benzyl alcohol and jasmon, which calm and relax the body and mind. As a mild analgesic and antispasmodic, the oil is especially effective for easing menstrual cramps. Jasmine oil also has a skin-softening action that treats dry skin and dermatitis; its astringent and antibacterial actions treat skin conditions, as well.

    JASMINE SAFETY & INTERACTIONS

There are not known safety precautions with Jasmine herbal products. It is recommended that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.

In its concentrated form, Wild Jasmine is toxic and can result in paralysis when the patient is fully conscious. The toxic effect is due to the alkaloid gelseminin, the paralyzing effect that acts on the motor endplates in the central nervous system. Consult with your health care provider if using a concentrated form of Jasmine internally. Avoid Jasmine while pregnant or nursing as it can suppress milk production.

Jasmine oil possesses a very intense aroma and should therefore not be used too much or for too long. When Jasmine oil is administered in too high a concentration or for a very long period of time, the sweet, heavy aroma might lead to dizziness, headaches and even nausea. It is therefore important not to let Jasmine-Absolute oil evaporate in your aromatherapy lamp for any longer than 2 hours each day.

Avoid while pregnant. Not for internal use. As with all essential oils, never use them undiluted, in eyes or mucus membranes. Do not take internally unless working with a qualified and expert practitioner. Keep away from children. If applying an essential oil to your skin always perform a small patch test to an insensitive part of the body (after you have properly diluted the oil in an appropriate carrier. Every effort is made to provide medically accurate and up-to-date information that is intended to complement, not replace, the advice of your health care provider or midwife. Before undertaking the advice contained on this website, you should consult with your health care provider or midwife, who can best assess your individual needs, symptoms and treatment.

The Jasmine Green Tea Tradition. Jasmine, native to the Persian Gulf, was brought to china in the third century A.D. Green tea enriched with the scent of jasmine flowers has long been one of the favorite healthy beverages in china. Jasmine has traditionally been popular for its comforting, relaxing and warming qualities, for brightening one's mood, and as a soothing digestive beverage. Our tea is made from fragrant jasmine flowers combined with mild green tea leaves, creating a delicious aromatic beverage. Unlike many jasmine teas made with black tea, our jasmine tea uses beneficial green tea leaves for a more traditional Chinese tea. Make this healthful tea a part of your daily diet., just as Asian people do. Triple Leaf Tea's ancient Chinese medicinal.
