    HELICHRYSUM DESCRIPTION

Helichrysum, also called Everlasting, Strawflower, and Immortelle. Helichrysum arenarium is also known as dwarf everlast, and as Immortelle. Helichrysum is best known as a flower that keeps its shape and color when dried. It is, therefor, often included in dried flower arrangements and wreaths. Originally from the Mediterranean region, the hardy evergreen bears long stems and velvety needles and clusters of ball-shaped, golden flower heads. Used by ancient Romans to repel moths, Helichrysum gained a following for its honeylike fragrance. In fact, the flower is often strewn on the floors in Europe, crushing it underfoot releases a sweet aroma. The plant's essential oil is distilled from several species, such as Helichrysum italicum and Helichrysum angustifolium, and has a soothing, pleasant scent. Helichrysum essential oil can help alleviate skin irritation, aching muscles and joints and upper-respiratory congestion. On an emotional level, the essential oil assists creativity and intuition.

The word helichrysum is named after the golden yellow flowers of the plant, and comes from the Greek words helios meaning sun and chrysos meaning gold. The common name, immortelle, also comes from the flowers, because they are long lasting blossoms that do not wither easily. As a perennial plant, Helichrysum grows to be an average of 13 inches tall. Helichrysum italicum is a flowering plant of the daisy family Asteraceae. It is sometimes called the curry plant because of the strong smell of its leaves. It grows on dry, rocky or sandy ground around the Mediterranean. The stems are woody at the base. The clusters of yellow flowers are produced in Summer, they retain their color after picking and are used in dried flower arrangements.

The leaves are flat, the lower ones being elliptical in shape, while the upper ones are linear. They are wooly on both sides. The flower heads are arranged in loosely, a cross between umbel and panicle. They are 3 to 4 mm wide of bright golden yellow florets. It is found in Eastern France to Denmark as well as on the mountains of Uzbekistan on sandy grasslands, and heathland. It is also widely spread on the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia where locals regularly pick and sell it throughout the summer (weather permitting even as late as September and October). For cultivation, Helichrysum italicum is a tender perennial (USDA Zones 7or 8 (depending on sources0 to zone 10).

Helichrysum essential oil is steam distilled from the flowers with a base note classification. Thes aroma is sweet, earthy, green floral. The largests producing countries are France, Bosnia, Italy and Spain. The traditional use of the essential oil is widely popular in the perfume and skincare industries. The essential oil has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antispasmodic, astringent, cholagogue, cicatrizant, diuretic, expectorant, hepatic, nervine, and stimulant. It considered generally safe for most people.

Helichrysum essential oil blends well with many other oils, including Bergamot, Cypress, Clary Sage, Geranium, Juniper Lavender, Lemon, Pine Needle, Rosemary, Tea Tree essential oils.

HELICHRYSUM USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

The Helichrysum plant produces an oil from its blossoms which is used for medicinal purposes. It is anti-inflammatory, fungicidal, and astringent. It soothes burns and raw chapped skin. It is used as a fixative in perfumes and has an intense fragrance. An infusion of the bright yellow flowers is used in the treatment of gall bladder disorders and as a diuretic in treating rheumatism and cystitis. It is a component in zahraa, an herbal tea used for medicinal purposes in Syria. It is being used also as a component of herbal fruit teas. The dried plant is often used for decorative purposes along with, or instead of, its relative Helichrysum bracteatum.

It has been claimed on some gardening forums that the curry plant is as effective a cat deterrent as the "scaredy-cat" plant, Plectranthus caninus (also known as Coleus canina). This may be not so much a recommendation for Helichrysum italicum as a comment on the efficacy of Plectranthus caninus.

This plant is sometimes used as a spice. Although called "curry plant" and smelling like curry powder, it has nothing whatsoever to do with this mixture of spices, nor with the curry tree (Murraya koenigii), and is not used as masala for curry dishes either. Rather, it has a resinous, somewhat bitter aroma reminiscent of sage or wormwood and is used like these: the young shoots and leaves are stewed in Mediterranean meat, fish or vegetable dishes til they have imparted their flavor, and removed before serving.

    ESSENTIAL OIL THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS

Helichrysum oil is an effective remedy for acne, blemished skin, psoriasis, dermatitis, herpes, fever blisters, gum inflammation, bronchitis, coughs, lymph blockage, rheumatism, arthritis, edema, congestion and muscle cramps. Helichrysum's primary components of pinene, nerol, uvaol and amyrin give the oil its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, which are useful when applied to inflamed, blemished skin, acne and burns. The oil's powerful expectorant effect makes it a good addition to steam inhalations, relieving respiratory congestion, bronchitis and coughs.
