    GRAPEFRUIT DESCRIPTION

    GRAPEFRUIT & GRAPEFRUIT SEED

    GRAPEFRUIT FRUIT

The Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) is a subtropical citrus tree known for its sour to semi-sweet fruit. Grapefruit is a hybrid originating in Barbados as an accidental cross between two introduced species, sweet orange (C. sinesis) and pomelo or shaddock (C. grandis), both of which were introduced from Asia in the seventeenth century. When found, it was named the "forbidden fruit", and it has also been misidentified with the pomelo.

The evergreen grapefruit trees usually grow to around 16 to 20 feet tall, although they can reach 43 to nearly 50 feet in height. The leaves are glossy dark green, long (5.9-inches) and thin. It produces 2-inch white four-petaled flowers. The fruit is yellow-orange skinned and generally an oblate sheroid in shape, ranging in diameter from about 4-inches to 6-inches. The flesh is segmented and acidic, varying in color depending on the cultivars, which include white, pink and red pulps of varying sweetness (generally the redder varieties are sweeter).

    grapefruit varities

Grapefruit comes in many varieties, determinable by color, which is caused by the pigmentation of the fruit with respect to its state of ripeness. The most popular varieties cultivated today are red, white, and pink hues, referring to the internal pulp color of the fruit. The family of flavors range from highly acidic and somewhat sour to sweet and tart. Grapefruit mercaptan, a sulfur-containing terpene, is one of the substances which has a strong influence on the taste and odor of grapefruit, compared with other citrus fruits.

The Grapefruit is a wonderful source of vitamin C and potassium, and contains high amounts of lycopene, folate, iron, calcium, and other minerals as well. The pink and red varieties are rich in beta carotene and have anti-oxidant properties. Grapefruit is high in fiber and low in calories. This fruit has antiseptic, stomachic, tonic and diuretic properties.

    GRAPEFRUIT PECTIN

Aside from their bright, fresh flavors and vivid colors, fresh fruits play an important dietary role as a source of healthful fiber. Some of that fiber comes in the form of insoluble fiber, or "roughage," which simply passes through your system. In other fruits, such as grapefruit, much of the fiber is in the form of pectin. Grapefruit pectin is often extracted from the fruit after it's been processed for other purposes, and the pectin is then sold for food use or as a dietary supplement.

About Pectin: The cell walls in plant-based foods are made up of cellulose, very large molecules made up of thousands of smaller molecules of simple sugars. The plant's structural strength comes partly from the cellulose in those cell walls and partly from substances such as pectin that "glue" the cell walls together in much the same way wood adhesives are used to make plywood. Pectin can be extracted by cooking the fruit, making it available for other uses.

Pectin as Fiber: Cellulose and pectin are both examples of dietary fiber, large carbohydrate molecules that your body can't digest. Cellulose is referred to as "insoluble" fiber because it's water-resistant and passes unaltered through the digestive tract. Pectin is an example of "soluble" fiber, which dissolves into liquids and forms a soft gel. Soluble fiber plays an important role in helping moderate lipids and blood glucose, so you'll probably find grapefruit pectin in capsule form at your favorite supplements store alongside psyllium and other common fiber supplements.

Grapefruit Pectin in Food: After whole grapefruit are turned into frozen and canned segments or grapefruit juice, processors extract pectin and other useful products from the fruit's peel, membrane and seeds. The pectin extracted from grapefruit can be sold in purified form for home canning or used to gel commercial jams and jellies made from fruits and berries that lack adequate pectin of their own. It's also used in some fruit leathers and fruit-based candies.

Making Your Own Pectin: If you eat grapefruit regularly, you can produce your own pectin from the leftover peels and internal membranes. Peel or grate the yellow zest from the grapefruit rinds, then chop them coarsely and soak them for an hour in 1/2 cup of lemon juice per pound of peels. This weakens the chemical bonds holding the pectin in place. Cover the peels with 1 quart of water per pound of peels and soak for a second hour, then bring the pot to a boil. After 10 to 15 minutes of simmering, remove the pot from the stove and let it cool. Strain the liquid through a jelly bag or cheesecloth, and refrigerate it for later use.

  • GRAPEFRUIT SEED EXTRACT (GSE)

Grapefruit Seed extract (GSE), is a wonderful herbal infection-fighter, which was first used by farmers to inhibit the growth of mold on their equipment. Later, cosmetic companies used it in their products as a preservative. In the early 1980s, claims that GSE could fight infections in people promoted interest within the dietary supplement industry, and GSE products started to appear in health-food stores. GSE is sometimes called citrus seed extract.

    GRAPEFRUIT ESSENTIAL OIL

Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) is a wonderful source of vitamin C and potassium, and contains high amounts of lycopene, folate, iron, calcium, and other minerals as well. The pink and red varieties are rich in beta carotene and have anti-oxidant properties. Grapefruit is high in fiber and low in calories. In the early 1980s, claims that GSE could fight infections in people promoted interest within the dietary supplement industry, and GSE products started to appear in health-food stores. GSE is sometimes called citrus seed extract. Grapefruit essential oil is extracted by cold press-express method from the rind of the grapefruit.

The aroma of Grapefruit essential oil sparks dreams of nuch-needed escapes from the world, such as getaways under palm trees in tropical climates. The grapefruit tree is a member of the Rutaceae family that grows primarily in the United States, East Asia and the Mediterranean region. Israel, in particular, has extensive grapefruit plantations, and as such it supplies much of the Grapefruit oil available. It takes about 575 pounds of grapefruit skins to make one quart of essential oil, which is produced by cold pressing and is often blended with other types of oil to make perfumes. The oil's euphoric scent balances emotions and mood swings, giving you a new zest for life. It can banish depression, cares, and fears and help to alleviate exhaustion. The oil is also thought to have a toning and drying effect on the body, and therefore is considered a good skin-care remedy. Mildly antiseptic, it helps fight inflammations and the formation of pimples. Grapefruit oil can be very cleansing to the skin.

Grapefruit oil has a pleasantly sweet, tangy tart aroma that blends well with several other essential oils, such as frankincense, rosemary, and fir needle essential oils. Both white and pink grapefruit oils are available, with pink grapefruit essential oil generally being considered the sweeter of the two. The oil color is a pale yellow to yellow, thin in consistency, top perfumery not and a medium to strong initial aroma. It is citrusy and has the aroma of the grapefruit rind, but more concentrated.

GRAPEFRUIT USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Grapefruit is a rich source of vitamin C. It contains the fiber pectin. Grapefruit is high in pectin, a soluble fiber that helps lower blood cholesterol. It has also been promoted as a weight loss agent over the years, with claims that it can burn fat away. While there no substantive studies supporting its effectiveness, Grapefruit is a diuretic that works well in conjunction with a weight loss program. Grapefruit forms a core part of the "grapefruit diet", the theory being that the fruit's low glycemic index is able to help the body's metabolism burn fat.

The pink and red hues contain the beneficial antioxidant, lycopene. Studies have shown Grapefruit helps lower cholesterol, and there is evidence that the seeds have antioxidant properties.

Grapefruit has also been used to loosen a tight cough and thick phlegm so that it can be more easily coughed up. Some also believe that this fruit, when eaten daily, reduces the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and other inflammatory disorders. Preliminary studies have shown lycopene to be effective in reducing the risk of prostate cancer and in helping prevent many other diseases.

Grapefruit Seed has been used primarily as a treatment for vaginal yeast infections caused by Candida, and the intestinal condition, Candida Overgrowth Syndrome, but it is also used to kill strep, staph, salmonella, E. coli, influenza, parasites, herpes, fungi and traveler's diarrhea. Many forms of skin disorders such as dermatitis, poison oak, poison ivy, and cysts are being effectively treated with Grapefruit Seed Extract. Although doctors recommend GSE capsules, liquids, and powders for bacterial, viral, and fungal infections, including Candida Overgrowth Syndrome, there is no complete scientific research to indicate GSE can actually eliminate any infection in human beings.

Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) has been shown to have strong microbial properties agains fungi. GSE is a treatment for fungal sinusitis. Mayo Clinic Study Implicates Fungus As Cause Of Chronic Sinusitis

"We can now begin to treat the cause of the problem instead of the symptoms."

ROCHESTER, MINN. -- Mayo Clinic researchers say they have found the cause of most chronic sinus infections -- an immune system response to fungus. They say this discovery opens the door to the first effective treatment for this problem, the most common chronic disease in the United States. An estimated 37 million people in the United States suffer from chronic sinusitis, an inflammation of the membranes of the nose and sinus cavity. Its incidence has been increasing steadily over the last decade. Common symptoms are runny nose, nasal congestion, loss of smell and headaches. Frequently the chronic inflammation leads to polyps, small growths in the nasal passages which hinder breathing.

"Up to now, the cause of chronic sinusitis has not been known," say the Mayo researchers: Drs. David Sherris, Eugene Kern and Jens Ponikau , Mayo Clinic ear, nose and throat specialists. Their report appears in the September issue of the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings. "Fungus allergy was thought to be involved in less than ten percent of cases," says Dr. Sherris. "Our studies indicate that, in fact, fungus is likely the cause of nearly all of these problems. And it is not an allergic reaction, but an immune reaction."

The researchers studied 210 patients with chronic sinusitis. Using new methods of collecting and testing mucus from the nose, they discovered fungus in 96 percent of the patients' mucus. They identified a total of 40 different kinds of fungi in these patients, with an average of 2.7 kinds per patient. In a subset of 101 patients who had surgery to remove nasal polyps, the researchers found eosinophils (a type of white blood cell activated by the body's immune system) in the nasal tissue and mucus of 96 percent of the patients. The results, the researchers say, clearly portray a disease process in which, in sensitive individuals, the body's immune system sends eosinophils to attack fungi and the eosinophils irritate the membranes in the nose. As long as fungi remain, so will the irritation. "This a potential breakthrough that offers great hope for the millions of people who suffer from this problem," says Dr. Kern. "We can now begin to treat the cause of the problem instead of the symptoms."

More research is underway at Mayo Clinic to confirm that the immune response to the fungus is the cause of the sinus inflammation. The researchers are also working with pharmaceutical companies to set up trials to test medications to control the fungus. They estimate that it will be at least two years before a treatment will be widely available. The researchers distinguish chronic sinusitis -- sinusitis that lasts three months or longer -- from acute sinusitis, which lasts a month or less. They say that the cause of the acute condition is usually a bacterial infection. Antibiotics and over-the-counter decongestants are widely used to treat chronic sinusitis. In most cases, antibiotics are not effective for chronic sinusitis because they target bacteria, not fungi. The over-the-counter drugs may offer some relief of symptoms, but they have no effect on the inflammation. "Medications haven't worked for chronic sinusitis because we didn't know what the cause of the problem was," says Dr. Ponikau. "Finally we are on the trail of a treatment that may actually work."

Thousands of kinds of single-cell fungi (molds and yeasts) are found everywhere in the world. Fungal spores (the reproductive part of the organism) become airborne like pollen. Some people develop allergies to fungi. The new evidence from the Mayo study suggests that many people also develop a different kind of immune system response.

Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) has helped thousands of people with sinus problems. Try using a GSE nasal spray.

Grapefruit essential oil is used for exhaustion, depression, oily skin, acne, to curb the appetite, relieve aching muscles, cellulitis, dull skin, toxin build-up, and water retention (edema). Therapeutic effects come from some of the important components found in Grapefruit oil, such as pinene, limonene, citral, citronellal, neral and geraniol. Pinene and limonene are particularly refreshing and toning for the entire body. These two substances many help fight cellulitis and edema because they stimulate the metabolism, supporting the removal of waste and lymphatic fluid from the tissues.

Conflicting Views: Massage oils enriched with Grapefruit oil are often used in massage therapy. But many aromatherapists have conflicting views as to Grapefruit's role in reducing cellulilte and toxins - some believe it is more the massage than the essential oil that stimulates the lymphatic system, triggering the liver and kidneys to process toxic material.

  • GRAPEFRUIT DOSAGE INFORMATION

Grapefruit and Grapefruit Seed come in various forms. For best results, read product label directions for use.

    GRAPEFRUIT SAFETY & INTERACTION INFORMATION

Grapefruit Seed is non-toxic and biodegradable, with no harmful side-effects. When taking Grapefruit juice, certain prescription medications, particularly cholesterol-lowering drugs such as Lipitor can have negative effects, but it is safe to consume Grapefruit juice while taking most other prescriptions and any over-the counter medication. Safety in young children, pregnant and nursing women, or those suffering with liver or kidney disease is not known.

Grapefruit can have a number of interactions with drugs, often increasing the effective potency of compounds. Researchers have identified 85 drugs with which Grapefruit is known to have an adverse reaction. Grapefruit contains a number of polyphenolic compounds, including the favanone naringin, alongside the two furanocoumarins, bergamottin and dihydroxybergamottin. These inhibit the drug-metabolizing enzyme isoform CYP3A4 predominantly i the small intestine, but at higher doses also inhibit hepatic CYP3A4. It is via inhibition of this enzyme that Grapefruit increases the effects of a variety of drugs by increasing their bioavailability, in particular Grapefruit and Bitter Oranges are known to interact with statins.

Like all citrus essential oils, Grapefruit essential oil may increase your skin's sensitivity to light (it is considered phototoxic according to Robert Tisserand, author of Essential Oil Safety, 1995, page 138). This means that when your skin is exposed to strong sunlight or even ultraviolet rays, slow-to-fade brown pigment spots may form. If the oil is not properly blended, diluted or if it is applied unevenly, darkening and skin irritation could result. For these reasons, avoid using any products that contain Grapefruit essential oil before lying out in the sun or visiting a tanning salon.

Do not take any essential oil internally without consultation from a qualified aromatherapy practitioner. Do not apply undiluted essential oils, absolutes, CO2s or other concentrated essences onto the skin. If you are pregnant, epileptic, have liver damage, have cancer, or have any other medical problem, use essential oils only under the proper guidance of a qualified aromatherapy practitioner. Use extreme caution when using oils with children and give children only the gentlest oils at extremely low dosages, always consulting a aromatherapy practitioner prior to using essential oils with children. A skin patch test should always be conducted prior to using an essential oil that you have never used before.

    MOUNTAIN ROSE HERBS PRODUCTS

Mountain Rose Herbs: Grapefruit Peel Powder (Citrus x paradisi), Certified Organic, Bulk Organic Herbs & Spices
The grapefruit is not even 300 years old, and at the time of its 'discovery' was considered a horticultural accident during the 1700's. An Englishman by the name of Captain Shaddock brought the seeds to the West Indies from Polynesia in 1693. There are no records to prove it, but many theorize that the grapefruit is a cross between a Pomelo and a Sweet Orange, but no one knows for sure how it came about. By 1750, it was known as the 'Forbidden Fruit' or a smaller shaddock, after the mariner who brought it to the Caribbean. It did not make an appearance on American shores until 1823 when it was brought to Tampa, Florida from the Bahamas, where it flourished in the heat. It still did not become widely popular until the late 19th century. Today the USA is the world's major producer of the fruit. The current name is a reference to the way the fruit clusters on the tree which is similar to a bunch of grapes. Every part of the fruit can be eaten and utilized. Peel is used as a tea, body scrub, in the bath and may also be used to make extracts. Still considered one of the 7 wonders of Barbados, the grapefruit is high in vitamin C, fiber, potassium, iron, and calcium. It is considered an excellent antioxidant.

  • GRAPEFRUIT SEED EXTRACT PRODUCTS

Grapefruit Seed Extract acts as a broad spectrum antiseptic and antibiotic. Keeps the wound clean and helps to speed healing with Grapefruit Seed Extract & Tea Tree Oil. Grapefruit seed extract has been demonstrated to be effective against 800 different types of viruses, bacteria, yeast and fungi. The therapeutic effects of the grapefruit seed extract works both externally and internally against the viruses, yeast, bacteria and fungi by actually killing the killing germs. At the same time, grapefruit seed extract stimulates the immune system and works like an antibiotic drug without destroying the helpful bacteria that are normally present. The components of the grapefruit seed extract contains bioflavonoids, vitamin V and vitamin E. These work as antioxidants and makes grapefruit seed extract one of the most powerful natural antioxidants available. One study reported that 20 women with chronic vaginal itching and other discomforts apparently due to overgrowth of the organism Candida albicans responded well to grapefruit seed extract douches. It has been know to help with osteoporosis, herpes simplex virus, head lice and even used as a pesticide residue and a germicidal cleaner for the home. Osteoporisis is a result of a porous bone stucture that has broken down in bone density, an attack on bones cells and cell membranes that can cause pain and ease of broken bones. The antioxidants in grapefruit seed help minimize bone loss by neutralzing free radicals. Using an application of grapefruit seed extract solution, one part of the extract and nine parts water, dab on herpes virus, and within ten minutes the virus becomes inactive. Dab gently each day to affected area. For head lice, mix two quaters shampoo and one quarter of the extract solution (20 drops to one cup of water) and throughly massage into hair and scalp. Then place a shower cap over the hair and allow the mixture to work for approcimately twenty minutes. Rinse the hair well and groom with a delousing comb. More than one application of this treatment may be necessary. For a pesticide residue on fruits and vegetables, use a solution of the grapefruit extract and water and rub gently to fruits. It will remove any pesticides, microbes or bacteria that may be present on surfaces. It is also a great germicidal cleaning solution for the home. Use a solution from ten drops of the extract to one quart of water and clean as normal. Besides ridding the house of germs, it also keeps it smelling clean and pure.

Treatment: Grapefruit Seed Extract should be taken between meals. If irritating to the digestive tract, it may be taken with meals or in powder form (capsule). Dosages given are for a person of approximately 150 lbs.; adjust dosage according to weight. Days 1-3: ten drops (50/50 dilution) twice daily in vegetable or diluted fruit juice (or one 125 mg. capsule twice daily). Days 4-10: fifteen drops twice daily (or one capsule three times daily). Days 11-28: fifteen drops three times daily (or two capsules two to three times daily). Some people will show satisfactory improvement on the lower doses and therefore not require an increase; on the other hand, some resistant cases may require a slightly higher dose than given above. The schedule may also be modified: for some, the twenty-eight day course may prove unnecessary-two to three weeks may suffice. Once satisfactory improvement is noted, gradually reduce the Grapefruit Seed Extract dosage; if symptoms reappear, a return to a higher dose may be required. A four week treatment may not be sufficient-longstanding chronic cases may require four to six months of constant vigilance. Vaginal rinse: Add sixteen drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract to sixteen ounces of room temperature water (use only filtered, distilled, or boiled water) and shake well in a closed jar. Douche once daily for three days. (For greater retention of the solution, douche in a reclining position.) Repeat every fifth day thereafter. Caution: If severe vaginal irritation occurs, reduce mixture to five drops per pint of water. Discontinue if irritation persists. Do not douche if pregnant or menstruating unless advised by a health care practitioner. Note: Before beginning any treatment, a diagnosis by a qualified practitioner is necessary to establish whether or not the perceived symptoms are in fact being caused by Candida. The possiblity of reinfection by transmission from a sexual partner must also be considered if a cure is to be permanent.
