EUCALYPTUS - HERBAL OVERVIEW
EUCALYPTUS
Eucalyptus Globulus Blue Gum, Blue Mallee, Blue Mallee Oil, Eucalypti Folium, Eucalyptus Blatter, Eucalyptus Biostata, Eucalyptus Fructicetorum, Eucalyptus Leaf, Eucalyptus Odorata, Eucalyptus Oil, Eucalyptus Polybractea, Eucalyptus Smithii, Fever Tree, Fieberbaumblatter, Gully Gum, Gully Gum Oil, Gum Tree, Red Gum, Stringy Bark Tree, Sugandhapatra, Tailapatra, Tasmanian Blue Gum
EUCALYPTUS PLANT DESCRIPTION
Eucalyptus is known as one of the most powerful antiseptics, especially when it is old. Eucalyptus essential oil or crushed leaves can be added to a bath as aromatherapy to soothe muscles and relieve pain. The leaves can be used as a poultice for skin ailments and a pain reliever for rheumatism and sore muscles. Rubbed on the skin, eucalyptus speeds the absorption of aromatic pain relievers. Inhaling eucalyptus vapors opens the bronchial tubes in the lungs and relieves congestion.
Native to Australia, the eucalyptus tree now grows in Europe and North America and is naturalized to California and the Mediterranean countries. The antiseptic eucalyptus, a traditional aboriginal remedy, is today used throughout the world in treating colds and infections. It is also a familiar ingredient in cough medicines. Eucalyptus is an evergreen member of the myrtle family. It can grow in this country to a height of 100 feet. Its narrow, slightly curved leaves have a strong recognizable odor and slightly bitter taste.
PLANT PARTS USED
Today the eucalyptus tree is grown in the tropical, subtropical and temperate areas of Asia, Africa and the Americas. The medicinal, antiseptic eucalyptus oil is obtained from the plant's leathery blue-green leaves. The leaves are studded with glands containing the fragrant, volatile oil. In aboriginal medicine, the leaves were often used for poultices for wounds and infections.
There are many species of eucalyptus trees, but the most pleasant-smelling oil is produced by Eucalyptus globulus. The leaf is used and its volatile oils released by steam.
Typical preparations are facial or hydro-steams, aromatherapy, and teas. Some uses may include encapsulation or extracts, however these are found to be rare.

EUCALYPTUS CONSTITUENTS / COMPONENTS
Eucalyptus leaves is compromised primarily of the major volatile essential oil eucalyptol, the cooling element 1,8-cineol, which liquifies mucus. This compound is found in many other herbs in concentrations of 1 to 5 percent, but makes up about 70 percent of eucalyptus oil. Eucalyptus oil acts on nerve receptors in the mucosa of the nose and sinuses in a way that causes release of mucus. Eucalyptus oil is antiviral, as well as antibacterial. In laboratory studies, eucalyptol (the main essential oil in the herb) is antibacterial against several strains of Streptococcus, the organism that causes strep throat. Plus, the leaves of the eucalyptus tree contain large quantities of tannin, which acts as an astringent on body tissue.
EUCALYPTUS HISTORY
In the early nineteenth century, the crew of an Australian freighter developed intractable fevers they were able to cure with eucalyptus tree. Eucalyptus became well known in Europe as the Australian fever tree. American physicians used eucalyptus oil to sterilize surgical instruments and incisions, and also as a steam inhalation for asthma, bronchitis, colds and flu, emphysema, and whooping cough.
It was Baron Ferdinand von Müller, the German botanist and explorer (from 1857 to 1873 Director of the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne), who made the qualities of this Eucalyptus known all over the world, and so led to its introduction into Europe, North and South Africa, California and the non-tropical districts of South America. He was the first to suggest that the perfume of the leaves resembling that of Cajaput oil, might be of use as a disinfectant in fever districts, a suggestion which has been justified by the results of the careful examination to which the Eucalyptus has been subjected since its employment in medicine. Some seeds, having been sent to France in 1857, were planted in Algiers and thrived exceedingly well.
Trottoir, the botanical superintendent, found that the value of the fragrant antiseptic exhalations of the leaves in fever or marshy districts was far exceeded by the amazingly powerful drying action of the roots on the soil. Five years after planting the Eucalyptus, one of the most marshy and unhealthy districts of Algiers was converted into one of the healthiest and driest. As a result, the rapidly growing Eucalyptus trees are now largely cultivated in many temperate regions with the view of preventing malarial fevers. A noteworthy instance of this is the monastery of St. Paolo à la tre Fontana, situated in one of the most fever-stricken districts of the Roman Campagna. Since about 1870, when the tree was planted in its cloisters, it has become habitable throughout the year. To the remarkable drainage afforded by its roots is also ascribed the gradual disappearance of mosquitoes in the neighborhood of plantations of this tree, as at Lake Fezara in Algeria.
In Sicily, also, it is being extensively planted to combat malaria, on account of its property of absorbing large quantities of water from the soil. Recent investigations have shown that Sicilian Eucalyptus oil obtained from leaves during the flowering period can compete favorably with the Australian oil in regard to its industrial and therapeutic applications. Oil has also been distilled in Spain from the leaves of E. globulus, grown there.
In India, considerable plantations of E. globulus were made in 1863 in the Nilgiris at Ootacamund, but though a certain amount of oil is distilled there locally, under simple conditions, little attempt has hitherto been made to develop the industry on a commercial scale, Australia remaining the source of supply.
A great increase in Eucalyptus cultivation has recently taken place in Brazil as a result of a decree published in 1919 awarding premiums and free grants of land to planters of Eucalyptus and other trees of recognized value for essence cultivation.
Information and the above history about eucalyptus was obtained from Botanical.com: A Modern Herbal - Eucalyptus.

EUCALYPTUS USES
Eucalyptus leaves are, of course, koala food, the arboreal symbol of Australia, but can now be found in subtropical regions throughout the world.
Eucalyptus was also known as Australian fever tree, a reference to its ancient Native Australian usage. The medicinal properties of Eucalyptus reside in its oil, which is extracted from the fresh leaves and branch tips, and is found in the dried leaves. It acts as a decongestant, loosens phlegm, and relieves spasms.
Distilled eucalyptus has been used externally and internally for ailments from fever, whooping cough, bronchial and throat infections, discharges, wounds and ulcers. The oil has been known to be effective against flu, staph and strep. Germany's Commission E recommends using a spray of eucalyptus to soothe a sore throat. It has also been used as a room disinfectant. Eucalyptus oil is given to horses with influenza, dogs with distemper, and to all animals with septicemia.
Eucalyptus leaves is the remedy of choice, as a tea or decoction, for chest colds, coughs and bronchitis. It loosens mucus and has a slight disinfectant and antispasmodic effect. Liniments containing eucalyptus oil are very helpful for rheumatism and nerve pain, thanks to the oil's analgesic and cooling properties. Eucalyptus has been shown to be powerfully bactericidal in the laboratory. Eucalyptus may be helpful in relieving infections.
A combination of eucalyptus and mint may help relieve snoring.
Like the similar soothing agents menthol and camphor, Eucalyptus is found in several familiar over-the-counter remedies, including Listerine Antiseptic Mouthrinse, Mentholatum Cherry Chest Rub, and Vicks VapoRub.
Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal':'Stimulant, antiseptic, aromatic.'
'The medicinal Eucalyptus Oil is probably the most powerful antiseptic of its class, especially when it is old, as ozone is formed in it on exposure to the air. It has decided disinfectant action, destroying the lower forms of life. Internally, it has the typical actions of a volatile oil in a marked degree.'
'Eucalyptus Oil is used as a stimulant and antiseptic gargle. Locally applied, it impairs sensibility. It increases cardiac action.'
'Its antiseptic properties confer some anti-malarial action, though it cannot take the place of Cinchona.'
'An emulsion made by shaking up equal parts of the oil and powdered gum-arabic with water has been used as a urethral injection, and has also been given internally in drachm doses in pulmonary tuberculosis and other microbic diseases of the lungs and bronchitis.'
'In croup and spasmodic throat troubles, the oil may be freely applied externally.'
'The oil is an ingredient of 'catheder oil,' used for sterilizing and lubricating urethral catheters.'
King's 1898 Dispensatory:'The oil of eucalyptus (which is chiefly eucalyptol) and eucalyptol, in small doses, are gentle stimulants...'
'Eucalyptus globulus has for a long time been known as a remedy for intermittent fever among the natives of the countries of its origin.'
'Aside from its alleged utility in intermittents, this agent has had other virtues attributed to it, as follows: The leaves and their preparations have been successfully used as a tonic and gently stimulating stomachic, in atonic dyspepsia, and in catarrh of the stomach and typhoid fever; also advised in mucous catarrhal affections generally; in pseudo-membranous laryngitis, in asthma, with profuse secretion, and in chronic bronchitis, with or without emphysema, and in whooping-cough; it has likewise proved efficient in chronic catarrh of the bladder, where the urine is high-colored, contains an abnormal amount of mucus, or, perhaps, some purulent matter, and micturition is attended with much pain. More recently it has been recommended as a diuretic in the treatment of dropsy.'
'Both the leaves and the oil, as well as eucalyptol, are excitants and deodorizers, and, as such, have been successfully employed as local applications in bronchial affections with fetid expectoration, in ozena, in fetid or profuse mucous discharges, in vaginal leucorrhea, offensive lochial discharges, gonorrheal discharges, indolent, fetid wounds or ulcers, cancerous ulcerations, in septicemia, and in gangrene.'
'As a deodorizer, the tincture or the oil may be sprinkled or sprayed upon the offensive body, or the atmosphere of an apartment may be frequently sprayed with the same.'
'The most agreeable and convenient forms of administration are the tincture, in doses of 10 to 30 drops; or the fluid extract in doses of 5 to 30 drops, in syrup; or, preferable to all, specific eucalyptus, from 10 to 30-drop doses in malarial troubles, and from 5 to 10-drop doses in other troubles. It may be given with glycerin or syrup, as it does not mix well with water. The dose of the oil and of eucalyptol is from 5 to 10 minims, preferably in capsules.'
American Materia Medica, 1919 (Ellingwood):'In therapeutic action this agent closely resembles cinchona. It is anti-malarial, anti-periodic, febrifuge and tonic. The tree has been planted in malarial sections, and wherever planted the malarial conditions have been changed, the disease germs destroyed and the atmosphere purified, the locality becoming healthful and sanitary.'
'While acting similarly to quinine it may be prescribed where quinine is contraindicated. Its stimulating and anti-periodic influence is not so immediately marked, but its anti-malarial influence is persistent, and satisfactory results are ultimately obtained, which can be said also of its antiseptic influence.'
'It may be given in low forms of fever where the stimulating influence of quinine is too great, increasing the fever. In these cases eucalyptus will reduce the fever.'
'It is of much service in malarial neuralgia, in malarial headache and in vague intermittent conditions of an indefinable character.'
'The anti-malarial and distinctly antiseptic properties of eucalyptus give it a prominent place in the therapeutics of typhoid fever;. while it has many of the essential tonic and restorative properties, it is most active as an intestinal antiseptic.'
'In the treatment of diphtheria, eucalyptus is an excellent remedy. It may be used as a gargle diluted, and when the membrane has formed in the larynx or in the nasal passages, if fifteen drops of a mixture of equal parts of the oil of eucalyptus and turpentine be dropped upon the surface of hot water in a close-mouthed vessel, and the vapor inhaled by the patient for a few minutes every two hours, there is nothing that will more speedily destroy the membrane and assist in its removal.'
'The writer has been successful in completely clearing the nasal passages within thirty-six hours by this measure when the occlusion was nearly complete. This course is almost equally applicable in membranous croup. A specific measure in this disease is to give internally every two hours five drops of a mixture of equal parts of the tinctures of eucalyptus and jaborandi. If the membrane has formed extensively, this course loosens it and permits it to be thrown off. If it is in the early forming stage, the growth ceases and the membrane disappears. These facts have all been confirmed in a multitude of cases.'
'Eucalyptus if further used in tonsillitis in chronic post-nasal and bronchial catarrhs in asthma, in which case the vapor either alone or with that of stramonium is very useful, and in those conditions of the lungs and bronchi where there is offensive expectoration, pus or a suggestion of gangrene. In the constitutional treatment of phthisis it is of value, and if a few drops of the oil be added to cod liver oil, it will remove the disagreeable flavor of the latter agent.'
'The agent has been extensively used in the treatment of catarrh of the bladder, nephritis, pyelonephritis and pyelitis, especially if the urine be decomposed and offensive. It is useful also in gonorrhea and in gleet and as a wash in specific vaginitis.'
'In uterine catarrh this agent is valuable used as a douche in the proportion of two drams of the tincture to a pint of water. Whenever offensive discharges from these parts are present, it is useful in ulceration of the cervix. It may be made into a suppository with cocoa butter and white wax, in the proportion of one part of the oil to three parts of the other mixed constituents. This suppository is of great service after labor, either where the douche cannot be used or to be inserted after the douche where there is traumatism. This suppository is of value in uterine cancer. It relieves pain and corrects the odor of the discharges.'
Do not take eucalyptus preparations if you have inflammatory gastrointestinal or gallbladder disorders or liver problems. In addition, eucalyptus is too strong for children younger than two years.

Also, do not rub your eyes after applying. Labeled Eucalyptus Products A number of over-the-counter medications for both internal and external use contain eucalyptus oil. Examples include liniments, vapor rubs, cough drops, inhalants, acne treatments, toothpaste and mouthwash. Eucalyptus and its warm and stimulating scent can also be found in many soaps and detergents.
EUCALYPTUS SAFETY & INTERACTION INFORMATION
Eucalyptus oil is generally regarded as safe when taken in the recommended doses. However, it is best to consult with a health care provider for use of eucalyptus essential oil internally. For safety, use eucalyptus leaf teas and steams rather than the oil.
Excessive use may cause gastro-intestinal upset. In rare cases, after taking eucalyptus preparations nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur.
It is contraindicated with inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, inflammation of the bile ducts and serious liver diseases.
Eucalyptus preparations should not be applied to the face, especially the nose, of babies and very young children.
If you are pregnant, nursing, epileptic, have liver or kidney damage, or have cancer, do not use this or any essential oil without the guidance of a qualified health care practitioner. Not recommended for young children.
Eucalyptus oil affects (induces) the enzyme system of the liver involved in the detoxification processes (breaking down foreign substances in the liver). It may reduce the effectiveness of medications you are taking - the effect of drugs can be weakened and/or shortened.
