    CHLOROPHYLL HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Chlorophyll is also known as Chlorophyll a, Chlorophyll b, Chlorophyll c, Chlorophyll d, Chlorophylle, Chlorophylle a, Chlorophylle b, Chlorophylle c, Chlorophylle d, Clorofila.

Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in cyanobacteria and the chloroplasts of algae and plants. Its name is derived from the Greek words chloros (green) and phyllon (leaf). Chlorophyll is an extremely important biomolecule, critical in photosynthesis, which allows plants to absorb energy from light. Chlorophyll absorbs light most strongly in the blue portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, followed by the red portion. Conversely, it is a poor absorber of green and near-green portions of the spectrum, hence the reflected green color of chlorophyll-containing tissues. Chlorophyll was first isolated by Joseph Bienaime Caventou and Pierre Joseph Pelletier in 1817.

Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in plants. Plants use chlorophyll and light to make food. People use chlorophyll as medicine. Common sources of chlorophyll used for medicine include Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and silkworm droppings. Food sources include green leafy vegetables, romaine lettuce, broccoli, and spinach. Other good food sources of supplemental Chlorophyll comes from these sources:

CHLOROPHYLL USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

    THE GREEN PIGMENTATION

Chlorophyll is a chemoprotein commonly known for its contribution to the green pigmentation in plants, and is related to protoheme, the red pigment of blood. It can be obtained from green leafy vegetables (broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, lettuce, and spinach), algae (Chlorella and Spirulina), wheat grass, and numerous herbs (alfalfa, damiana, nettle, and parsley).

Chlorophyll medications are generically named chlorophyllin and may be available under the brand names of Chloresium, PALS, Derifil. Synonyms include ABCG2 substrates, chlorin e6, chlorin p6, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, chlorophyll c, chlorophyll d, chlorophyllin, chlorophyllpt, chlorophyll lipiodol, chlorophyll phytol, copper chlorophyll, Laminaria, microalgae, nutraceutical, Nullo®, peridinin chlorophyll-alpha protein, pheophorbide, pheophorbide a, pheophytin a, photodynamic antimicrobial therapy (PACT), phytanic acid, phytochemicals, porphobilinogen, porphyrin, PPBa, pristanic acid, protochlorophyllidae a, protoporhyrin IX, purpurin-18, retinoid X receptor (RXR) agonist, uroporphyrinogen-III.

    CULINARY USE

Chlorophyll is registered as a food additive (colorant), and its E number is E140. Chefs use chlorophyll to color a variety of foods and beverages green, such as pasta and absinthe. Chlorophyll is not soluble in water, and it is first mixed with a small quantity of vegetable oil to obtain the desired solution. Extracted liquid chlorophyll was considered to be unstable and always denatured until 1997, when Frank S. & Lisa Sagliano used freeze-drying of liquid chlorophyll at the University of Florida and stabilized it as a powder, preserving it for future use.

    chlorophyll uses

    HEALTH, DIETARY & MEDICINAL USES

Chlorophyll has been used traditionally to improve bad breath and other forms of body odor. To be effective, Chlorophyll must be taken internally to fight odors from the inside out, including odors of the urine and feces (reduction of odor from incontinence and bladder catherization, reducing colostomy odor), and infected wounds. A colostomy is a surgical opening made in the abdomen that allows intestinal waste to be collected in a bag.

Chlorophyll is also used for constipation, "detoxification," and wound healing. More recently chlorophyll has been used to aid in the removal of various toxins via the liver and remains a key compound for improving the function of essential detoxification pathways.

Chlorophyll may provide protection from pneumonia, aflatoxins and poisoning. Supportive evidence suggests it may be used as an anti-inflammatory agent for conditions, such as pancreatitis as well as exhibiting potent antioxidant and chemoprotective activities. Scientific research has demonstrated it may be an effective therapeutic agent in the treatment of herpes simplex, benign fibrocystic breast disease, chemoprevention, tuberculosis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Type 2 diabetes and obesity are also being explored as areas where chlorophyll can also be used.

Chlorophyll may provide antioxidant, antiviral properties. It may be helpful with preventing or treating Anemia, Cancer, Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), Blood Disorders (Porphyria), Gastrointestinal Conditions, and Hyperlipidemia (High Cholesterol).

    CHLOROPHYLL HEALTH BENEFITS

Eating your daily intake of nutritious vegetables, especially leafy green vegetables with deep, rich color tones are highly recommended for maintaining good health. In many ways they are perfect foods and part of the credit is owed to the chlorophyll they contain. Chlorophyll is a green pigment that is instrumental in photosynthesis and promoting good health.

Chlorophyll's benefit it gives comes from the fact that its molecular structure is almost identical to hemoglobin except for the center atom. In hemoglobin this is iron, whereas in chlorophyll it is magnesium. This means that when ingested, liquid chlorophyll can actually help to do the job of hemoglobin (hemoglobin is so vital to the health of our blood - blood is approximately 75-percent hemoglobin). It helps to rebuild and replenish our red blood cells, boosting our energy and increasing our wellbeing almost instantly. Eating Chlorophyll-rich foods and drinking liquid Chlorophyll can help increase the quality and quantity of red blood cells. Chlorophyll has the power to regenerate our bodies at the molecular and cellular level. Green foods are incredible for out health and all green foods contain an abundance of Chlorophyll. In addition to helping rebuild and replenish red blood cells, liquid Chlorophyll is also highly alkaline.
    • Helps Control Hunger & Cravings: A study released in September of 2013 determined that compounds containing chlorophyll might help suppress hunger. Twenty moderately overweight women were given test meals on three separate occasions one week apart - two meals with chlorophyll, one without. They reported reduced hunger following the meals containing the chlorophyll and blood tests showed stable blood sugar levels. These results suggest chlorophyll should be considered as an effective way to manage hunger and promote weight loss.

    • Encourages Healing: The use of chlorophyll to promote the healing process was first reported nearly 100 years ago. One report published by Butler University (in 1950) discussed its use for improving healing times. A more recent study found that, when used as a spray, chlorophyll significantly helped wound therapy. The research clearly backs its effectiveness in this area. While liquid chlorophyll does not actually have antiseptic properties of its own, it, quite remarkably, does have the ability to aid our body's tissue in destroying germs. By strengthening tissue, it increases the disease resistance of cells and, at the same time, prevents the growth of bacteria. Research also suggests that chlorophyll greatly assists in wound healing and prevention of reinfection.

    • Super Potent Antioxidant Action: Chlorophyll has status as a superfood due to its nutritional and potent antioxidant properties. It protects cells from oxidative damage by eliminating free radicals. One plant known for its high chlorophyll levels, Conyza triloba, showed very active superoxide scavenging behavior. An in vitro study found it capable of reducing free radicals while reducing cell damage.

    • Relieves Systemic Redness & Swelling: Traditional medicine has long used green leaves for infections. With modern approaches that have limited effectiveness and a long list of side effects, natural remedies are getting another look. Animal studies have found that green leaves help to reduce swelling and redness.

    • Antioxidant & Anti-inflammatory: Containing high levels of the vitamins A, C and E, liquid chlorophyll has strong antioxidant capacity and has also been found to help reduce inflammation. This study from the Journal of Inflammation states: "Chlorophylls and pheophytins showed in vitro anti-oxidant activity. The study shows that chlorophyll a and its degradation products are valuable and abundantly available anti-inflammatory agents and promising for the development of phytomedicine or conventional medicine to treat inflammation and related diseases." And in the Journal of Food Science, this study found that: "These results demonstrate that dietary chlorophyll derivatives prevalent in both fresh and processed foods and dietary supplements have antioxidant and antimutagenic activities."

    • Promotes Healthy Iron Levels: A modified form of chlorophyll known as chlorophyllin may be highly effective for anemia. By swapping iron for magnesium at the center of the molecule, it provides a bioavailable form of Iron the body can use. While scientists may look for ways to develop patent-able medicines, no one needs to wait to take chlorophyll to gain its benefits.

    • Rapid Delivery of Magnesium: Chlorophyll is rich in Magnesium, which is a highly alkaline mineral and so consuming chlorophyll rich foods has a highly alkalizing effect on the body. Magnesium is super-important as it helps to deliver much needed oxygen to cells and tissues, bone formation, nerve and muscle function. Magnesium is critical for the cardiovascular system, digestive system, nervous system, muscles, kidneys, liver, hormone-secreting glands, and brain all rely on magnesium for their metabolic function. Chlorophyll contains vitamin K, C, folic acid, iron, calcium, protein: which are all also essential in building and repairing red blood cells and boosting the immune system.

    • Cancer (Laser Therapy Adjunct): Preliminary evidence suggests that chlorophyll may aid in the reduction of side effects associated with photodynamic therapies such as those used in management of malignant tumors. Chlorophyll shows promising potential for cancer therapy. Although the research does not currently show that chlorophyll is an all out cancer cure, researchers are excited about its potential as a therapy. One study found men with lower levels of dietary chlorophyll had higher risks of colon cancer. Another study noted it effective at stimulating liver detoxifying enzymes and may protect against other carcinogens.

    • Fibrocystic Breast Disease: The benefits of chlorophyll in benign breast disease may be attributed to its ability to alter liver enzyme pathways involved in estrogen metabolism. A combination product containing chlorophyll may be beneficial for this condition.

    • Herpes (Simplex & Zoster): Clorophyll may treat herpes simplex and herpes zoster.

    • Pancreatitis (Chronic): Chlorophyll-a may reduce the mortality rate of experimental pancreatitis. Healthcare providers use chlorophyll intravenously for treating a pancreas problem called chronic relapsing pancreatitis. Giving chlorophyll intravenously seems to help reduce pain and other symptoms in people with chronic relapsing pancreatitis.

    • Pneumonia (Active Destructive): Chlorophyll may help to regulate T lymphocyte counts in patients with active destructive pneumonia.

    • Poisoning (Reduce Yusho Symptoms): Yusho is a poisoning caused by ingestion of rice oil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls, specifically polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). A chlorophyll-rich diet may increase PCDF and PCB elimination.

    • Heavy Metal Chelation: Chlorophyll is one of the most important chelates in nature. It has the ability to bind to and remove toxic heavy metals, such as mercury, which makes it an extremely powerful healer. After having mercury fillings removed, it may be helpful to use Chlorophyll as a means of removing any toxic mercury buildup from the body after the procedure.

    • Detoxification & Protection From Carcinogens: Chlorophyll may be of use as a chemopreventative agent due to its ability to inhibit the tumor-promoting effects of carcinogens. Chlorophyll may act to improve the detoxification of toxins involved in cancer promotion. Chlorophyll promotes cleansing of environmental pollutants such as toxic metals that can quickly destroy health. Chlorophyll binds with toxic metals to hamper absorption, and research has shown it can do the same with some carcinogens. A crossover study with 4 human volunteers tested chlorophyll’s ability to remove ingested aflatoxin, a known carcinogen. Each volunteer received three servings of the aflatoxin, followed with a meal, the latter two included a tablet of chlorophyll. The results showed rapid elimination with 95-percent evacuated within 24 hours. Chlorophyll's anti-carcinogenic properties helps to protect against a whole host of carcinogens found in fungus-laden foods such as nuts and grains, the toxins from cooked meats, and air-borne carcinogens (from pollution). It blocks the metabolism in the body of harmful chemicals known as procarcinogens that damage DNA. Chlorophyll protects DNA against fried foods. Fried foods are not just bad for your waistline, they also contain chemicals known to damage colon tissue and the DNA of colon cells. In one study, participants who ate fried foods coupled with protective foods, including chlorophyll, were observed to have less DNA damage of colon cells. Studies published in the journals Carcinogenesis and Food and Chemical Toxicology clearly display that chlorophyll inhibits carcinogenesis and further research showing chlorophyll as being cancer-preventative. Researchers at Oregon State University also concluded: "At … cancer rates relevant to humans, chlorophyll was strongly protective.

    • Treats Bad Breath: Chlorophyll has a double-action remedy for bad breath. Firstly, as a deodorizer, it will eliminate odors in the mouth and throat, but secondly it promotes a healthy digestive tract , which is the primary reason for bad breath. According to Dr Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing, 4th Edition: A Practical A-to-Z Reference to Drug-Free Remedies Using Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs & Food Supplements", Alfalfa supplies chlorophyll, which cleanses the bloodstream and colon, where bad breath often begins". This research summary from Oregon State University also sites a collection of studies showing chlorophyll to be a powerful internal deodorant.

    • Odor Reduction From Incontinence & Bladder Catheterization: Based on historical use, chlorophyll has been suggested to improve bodily odor in colostomy patients. Chlorophyll is good for your body from the inside out, literally. This includes body and fecal odors. When tested in a nursing home with 62 patients, one study reported improvements in the odors emanating from the test subjects. In addition to odor reduction, it also alleviated constipation and gas.

    • Effective Against Candida Albicans: Candida infection is a big problem for many individuals and can lead to fatigue, depression, and digestive problems; just to name a few. Research has shown that isolated chlorophyll solutions stop Candida albicans growth. Recent research has also shown that Chlorophyll is effective in fighting candida albicans. The alkaline approach has always shown itself to be great for candida and the alkaline diet is of course super-high in chlorophyll-rich foods.

    • Rheumatoid Arthritis: Diets high in chlorophyll have been hypothesized to modify intestinal flora resulting in improved management of immune disorders including rheumatoid arthritis.

    • Tuberculosis: Preliminary evidence suggests that chlorophyll intake during chemotherapy treatment in patients with tuberculosis may improve immune parameters and free radical indices, such as malonic dialdehyde.
Chlorophyll is an excellent dietary supplement. Chlorophyll possesses an amazing range of benefits and is readily available to everyone. Chlorophyll rich foods are also healthy in their own right and contain essential vitamins and nutrients needed for cardiovascular, muscular, and neural health. Consume foods containing chlorophyll or take a dietary supplement for best effect. Blue-green algae is one favorite Chlorophyll-rich food supplement. Spirulina (green algae) is another.

    fresh water algae

    FRESHWATER ALGAE HEALTH BENEFITS
    (Spirulina & Chlorella)

Packed with protein, nutrients and chlorophyll that are easy for the body to assimilate, the algae spirulina and chlorella have been extolled as near-perfect foods, gifts from the dawn of life on earth: Algae are among the earth's oldest life forms. While they may not be the solution to all nutritional problems, both types of algae do indeed make supplements that address a range of health needs. In particular, because they are such rich sources of protein, they can round out meatless diets. Spirulina, with its additional supply of the B vitamins, essential fatty acids and carotenoids, has a long history of food use; it was, for example, a staple in the diet of the Aztecs. As a rich source of chlorophyll as well as basic nutrients, chlorella is believed by some to cleanse the blood of toxins, buffer the effects of radiation, boost immunity and even fight cancer. Research has yet to hear these benefits out.

    chlorophyll supplements
    SUPPLEMENTARY GREEN FOR YOUR HEALTH

Spirulina and chlorella are available as liquids, tablets, capsules and powders at health food stores. Many "green drinks" contain one or both of these algae. One of the most popular uses of these algae is as a breath freshener - the chlorophyll content accounts for this effect. For bad breath, it is suggested that you chew tablets or swish some juice around in your mouth.

    THERAPEUTIC EFFECT OF FRESHWATER ALGAE

Useful for supplementing vegetarian diets, weight-loss diets and fasts, fresh water algae is used for increasing energy and resistance under conditions of stress or weakness. Algae supplies easily digestible, complete protein (protein containing all the essential amino acids) to vegetarians, those who are fasting or dieting and those who have trouble digesting other forms of protein. The vitamins and minerals algae contain are useful as a supplement in these cases. Algae's protein might, in addition, stabilize blood-sugar levels for diabetes and hypoglycemics.

    COMPONENTS OF FRESHWATER ALGAE

Spirulina, a blue-green alga, contains up to 70 percent protein, chlorella, about 60 percent. Both are rich in beta carotene as well as other carotenoids, all antioxidants that may lower cancer risks. They also contain essential fatty acids, including gamma-linolenic acid, which are vital for nerve and brain function and also help relieve eczema and other skin conditions. Calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc are among the minerals supplied by spirulina; A, D, B-1, B-2 and B-12 are among its vitamins. Besides chlorophyll, chlorella contains the vitamin B-complex and vitamins C and E.

    TAKE CARE!

Vegetarians tend to have vitamin B-12 deficiencies. Although spirulina and other algae have high levels of this vitamin, it may not be in a form the body can use, so algae may not offset such deficiencies.

    SAFETY CONCERNS

In recent years, there has been concern about algae contaminated by pollution in lakes where they were harvested. As a result, algae products are now subject to more stringent controls.

    FRESH WATER ALGAE NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

For added protein and nutrients, take 3 to 5 tablets or 2 to 3 teaspoons of powdered spirulina or chlorella 2 to 3 times daily. Mix the powder with fruit or vegetable juice. If you are under unusual stress, you can take up to 12 spirulina or chlorella tablets or capsules over the course of the day. Take 100 mg or vitamin C along with every algae pill. Together, the algae and extra vitamin C fortify your immune system - stress tends to weaken your resistance. The high-dosage supplement may also improve your energy level and your ability to concentrate at such times.

    GREEN SMOOTHIE FOR ENERGY

    1 Banana
    1/2 Cup Plain Live-Culture Yogurt
1/2 Teaspoon Spirulina or Chlorella Powder
    1/4 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
    1 Cup Apple Juice
    1/8 Teaspoon Vitamin C Powder (500 mg)
    1 Teaspoon Lecithin
    1/8 Teaspoon Liquid Vitamin B

Combine all the ingredients in a blender, blending well. This smoothie gives you an extra boost of nutrition and energy. It is also an easy low-calorie way to ensure that your vitamin, mineral and protein intake is adequate while you are dieting.

CLAIMS & COUNTERCLAIMS OF FRESHWATER ALGAE

Algae have been found to contain various antiviral and anticancer compounds, at least in lab experiments; other compounds increased immune-cell levels in lab animals. This may prove promising. Claims that spirulina can suppress the appetite and that chlorophyll in algae improves bad breath or other odors have not, however, been supported thus far.

    CHLORELLA

Chlorella belongs to the eucaryotic cell category of algae and lives in fresh water as a single celled plant containing a nucleus and an enormous amount of readily available chlorophyll. Its size is about that of a human erythrocyte (red blood cell) (between 2-8 microns in diameter. The name chlorella derives from two Latin words meaning "leaf" (green) and "small", referring to the unusually high content of chlorophyll which gives chlorella its characteristic deep emerald-green color. Chlorella is also rich in protein (about 58 percent), vitamins (all of the B vitamins, vitamin C and E), rare trace minerals, amino acids, "C.G.F." (Chlorella Growth Factor) and other beneficial substances. In fact, it is virtually a complete food. It contains more vitamin B-12 than liver does, plus considerable amount of beta-carotene. It has a strong cell wall, however, which makes it difficult to gain access to its nutrients. Consequently, it requires factory processing to be effective.

Under favorable growth conditions; strong sunlight, pure water and clean air, chlorella multiplies at an incredible rate. The process of reproduction can generally be divided into several steps; growth-ripening-maturity-division. At the division stage, a "mother" cell divides into 4 "daughter" cells. This complete reproduction cycle can take less than 24 hours.

Chlorella is one of the few edible species of water-grown algae. It may be taken in the form of tablets or capsules, or added to foods such as pasta or cookies. Taken in any form, chlorella can improve the nutritional quality of your daily diet. The increase in processed and refined foods in the diet of modern man make chlorella an important food supplement for anyone interested in better health.

Chlorella also contains a growth-promoting substance, making it valuable as an ingredient in breads and fermented drinks. If chlorella extract is added to the dough before yeast fermentation, the visual appearance and flavor of the loaf can be enhanced. It will also keep the bread fresher for a longer period. Chlorella can also be added to other foods to improve their flavor. Examples of these include wine, cakes, cookies, cheese, ice-cream, mayonnaise, pasta, rice and soft drinks. Chlorella can have a strengthening effect on body cells by supporting the functioning of our metabolic pathways. The chlorophyll in chlorella can help speed the cleansing of the bloodstream. In tests, Chlorella was added to the diet of mice with "fatty liver". After administration of this diet over an extended period there was a marked reduction in this fatty condition.

Mice that were injected with cancer cells showed a higher resistance to this challenge if they had been fed with chlorella, Another test showed that chlorella Growth Factor will improve their resistance to abdominal tumors and increase the number of immune cells in the abdominal cavity.

Chlorella can promote cell reproduction, reduce cholesterol and increase hemoglobin levels. Since chlorella is such a broad-spectrum product, it can help to support and repair organs and tissues that have been injured by a variety of causes. Chlorella is very high in RNA and DNA, and has been found to protect against the effects of ultraviolet radiation.

Numerous research projects in the USA and Europe have indicated that chlorella can also aid the body in the breakdown of persistent hydrocarbon and metallic toxins such as DDT, PCB, mercury, cadmium and lead as well as strengthening the immune system response. The fibrous materials in chlorella will also improve digestion and promote the growth of beneficial aerobic bacteria in the gut. Other research programs have indicated that regular use of chlorella can help to guard against heart disease, reduce high blood pressure and lower serum cholesterol levels.

Studies show that chlorella is an excellent source of protein, especially for people who cannot or choose not to eat meat. Chlorella is the most beneficial green plant from under the sea that can be added to a person's diet for the health and wellbeing of the human body. With the many positive findings of scientific researchers around the world, this food should become an indispensable part of our daily diet so that we can enjoy the many health benefits that it has to offer.

    CHLOROPHYLL & GREEN DRINKS

"Green Drinks" are natural food formulas made from plants that are good detoxifiers and blood cleansers, as well as sources of chlorophyll, minerals, enzymes, and other important nutrients. Generally, they can be made fresh using a juicer or blender or are sold in powdered form to be mixed just before use. Many different companies market green drink formulas.

Green juices cleanse the body of pollutants and have a rejuvenating effect. Made from a variety of green vegetables, green juices are rich in chlorophyll, which helps to purify the blood, build red blood cells, detoxify and heal the body, and provide the body with fast energy.

Green juices can be made with alfalfa sprouts, cabbage, kale, dandelion greens, spinach, and other green vegetables, including wheatgrass. Wheatgrass juice is particularly important in any cancer treatment, especially when radiation therapy is involved.

Wheatgrass Kits, Organic Sprouting Seeds (alfalfa, wheatgrass, barley, etc.)

To sweeten and dilute your green juices, try adding fresh carrot and apple juice. No other fruit juices should be added. Steam distilled, quality bottled or filtered water is another good addition.

Although green juices have great health benefits, they should be consumed in moderation. Try drinking about 8 to 10 ounces a day. The following is an excellent green drink:

    CHLOROPHYLL DOSAGE INFORMATION

Getting chlorophyll into your daily diet is really quite easy. The simplest way is to eat and drink your greens. This ensures you are getting plenty of Chlorophyll in your diet.

Green Drinks are becoming more and more popular these days. Celebrities from Oprah, to Dr. Oz are talking about green drinks. A green drink is basically a fresh juice, juiced yourself, made out of green foods. Although some people call for fruit to be added, fruit that has been juiced with the fiber removed is less optimal as it concentrates the fructose, and fructose without fiber is not good for your body and your pH balance.

The second, more convenient but less beneficial option is to mix powdered greens into water or juice 2 to 4 times per day. These powdered green drinks are a dense source of alkalizing, chlorophyll-rich greens that are easily assimilated by the body and they are usually made up from powdered grasses (such as wheatgrass and barleygrass), vegetables, low sugar fruits and other alkalizing ingredients. Using both methods would be a beneficial method of getting the wholesome benefits of Chlorophyll and all the other nutrients available in the drinks.

Eating green foods in general is preferred. Big salads with lots of greens and veggies, such as spinach, lettuce, broccoli, Asian greens, green capsicum, asparagus, peas, beans, kale, and others. etc. Any food that is green is that way because it contains chlorophyll. Eat, drink, ingest however you can.

    chlorophyll tablets

    SUPPLEMENT DOSAGE FOR ADULTS
    (18 years and older.)

There is no proven effective dose for Chlorophyll. However, these dosages have been used by health care practioners:
    • For bad breath, 100 mg has been taken two or three times daily.
    • For colostomy odor, 75 mg taken orally three times daily for up to 100 to 200 mg daily in divided doses has been used. 300 mg daily has been used if odor was still not controlled. 1 to 2 tablets of 100 mg have been placed in the empty pouch each time it is reused or changed in a patient who has had an ostomy.
    • For protection from aflatoxins, chlorophyllin 100 mg taken orally three times daily for four months has been studied.
    • For pancreatitis, an intravenous infusion (IV) of 5 to 20 mg water-soluble chlorophyll-a daily for one to two weeks followed by intermittent administration thereafter has been used.
    • For pneumonia, an IV infusion of 0.25% chlorophyllypt solution in physiological sodium chloride solution administered by intravenous drip has been studied.

Theoretical evidence suggests Chlorophyll may aid the growth of new tissue when applied topically (on the skin) for burns and wounds.

    SUPPLEMENT DOSAGE FOR CHILDREN
    (Younger than 18 years.)

There is no proven effective dose for chlorophyll in children.

CHLOROPHYLL SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS INFORMATION

    SAFETY CONCERNS

Chlorophyll seems to be safe for most people when taken by mouth. Keep in mind, moderation in all things. Follow dosage recommendations and do not overdose yourself while thinking more of a good thing must be better, which in most cases is not. Stay within recommended dosage guidelines for best results.

Overcooking is particularly important to avoid when it comes to chlorophyll, but with very short steaming times, the chlorophyll content of these foods is preserved, and absorption from these foods may actually be increased.

Chlorophyll should not be used by injection (intravenously) without the supervision of a trained medical professional. Healthcare providers give chlorophyll intravenously (by IV) for pain and swelling (inflammation) of the pancreas (pancreatitis).

    SIDE EFFECTS & WARNINGS

  • It appears that chlorophyll is generally safe and without many side effects or toxicities in non-sensitive people. Adverse effects are usually gastrointestinal or dermatologic in nature. Common gastrointestinal complaints may include nausea, diarrhea, green stools, and abdominal cramping. When taken by mouth, chlorophyllin may cause green discoloration of the urine.
  • Avoid in individuals with a known allergy or hypersensitivity to chlorophyll or any of its metabolites; contact may result in a photosensitive rash. Copper chlorophyll (E141) could be a pseudoallergen.
  • Use cautiously in patients who show signs of photosensitivity, such as a rash, to chlorophyll or any of its metabolites.
  • Use cautiously in patients with compromised liver function due to the possibility of the development of jaundice.
  • Use cautiously in patients taking immunosuppressant agents as chlorophyll may normalize T lymphocyte counts.
  • Use cautiously in patients with diabetes or taking diabetes agents as chlorophyll may have antidiabetic effects.
  • Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Chlorophyll is not recommended in pregnant or breastfeeding women due to lack of available scientific evidence. To be on the safe side, Chlorophyll supplementation should be avoided.

  • DRUGS & MEDICATIONS INTERACTIONS

  • Chlorophyll metabolite phytanic acid may have antidiabetic activity. Caution is recommended when using medications that may lower blood sugar. Patients taking oral drugs for diabetes or insulin should be monitored closely by a qualified healthcare professional, including a pharmacist. Medication adjustments may be necessary.
  • Phytanic and pristanic acids are thought to affect catabolic lipid metabolism. Caution is recommended when taking chlorophyll with agents that lower cholesterol, such as statins.
  • Although not well studied in humans, chlorophyll or its metabolites may have antineoplastic (anticancer) properties. Caution is recommended in patients taking other anticancer agents.
  • The chlorophyll metabolites phytanic and pristanic acids may have antiobesity properties. Caution is recommended when taking chlorophyll and other agents for weight loss.
  • Chlorophyll may have antioxidant and antiviral properties. Caution is recommended in patients taking drugs with antioxidant and antiviral properties due to possible additive effects.
  • Chlorophyll may have detoxifying effects, especially dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs).
  • Chlorophyll and some of its synthetically produced derivatives may be photosensitizing. Chlorophyll may cause hyperpigmentation, dermatitis, or make a patient more sensitive to laser treatment.
    • Moderate interaction may occur with medications that increase sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitizing drugs). These drugs interacts with Chlorophyll. Some medications can increase sensitivity to sunlight. Chlorophyll might also increase your sensitivity to sunlight. Taking chlorophyll along with medication that increase sensitivity to sunlight could increase the chances of sunburn, blistering or rashes on areas of skin exposed to sunlight. Be sure to wear sunblock and protective clothing when spending time in the sun. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), Ciprofloxacin (Cipro), norfloxacin (Noroxin), lomefloxacin (Maxaquin), ofloxacin (Floxin), levofloxacin (Levaquin), sparfloxacin (Zagam), gatifloxacin (Tequin), moxifloxacin (Avelox), trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (Septra), tetracycline, methoxsalen (8-methoxypsoralen, 8-MOP, Oxsoralen), and Trioxsalen (Trisoralen).

    DIETARY SUPPLEMENT & HERBAL INTERACTIONS

  • Phytanic and pristanic acids are thought to affect catabolic lipid metabolism. Caution should be taken when taking chlorophyll with herbs or supplements that lower cholesterol, such as Red Yeast Rice.
  • Although not well studied in humans, chlorophyll or its metabolites may have antineoplastic (anticancer) properties. Caution should be taken in patients taking anticancer herbs or supplements.
  • Chlorophyll may have antioxidant and antiviral properties. Caution is recommended in patients taking herbs or supplements with antioxidant and antiviral properties due to possible additive effects.
  • Although not well studied in humans, chlorophyll may have detoxifying effects, especially dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs).
  • The chlorophyll metabolite phytanic acid may have antidiabetic activity. Caution is recommended when using herbs or supplements that may lower blood sugar. Blood glucose levels may require monitoring, and doses may need adjustment.
  • Chlorophyll and some of its synthetically produced derivatives may be photosensitizing. Chlorophyll may cause hyperpigmentation, dermatitis, or make a patient more sensitive to laser treatment. Beta-carotene or canthaxanthin may prevent or lessen chlorophyll-induced photosensitivity.
  • Although not well studied in humans, Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) and Vitamin B-5 (Pantothenic Acid) may exert preventative effects against photosensitized hemolysis.
  • The chlorophyll metabolites phytanic and pristanic acids may have antiobesity properties. Caution is recommended when taking chlorophyll and other herbs or supplements for weight loss.

  • CHLOROPHYLL POISONING

Chlorophyll is the chemical that makes plants green. Chlorophyll is found in green plants, plant foods, some cosmetics, and natural supplements, and it may be found in other sources as well. Chlorophyll is considered non-poisonous. Most people who swallow chlorophyll have no symptoms. However, in rare cases Chlorophyll poisoning occurs when someone swallows a large amount of this substance. The person may experience diarrhea, loose bowel movements (stools) and stomach cramps. If someone does swallow chlorophyll, their tongue may appear yellow or black, and their urine or feces may appear green. If chlorophyll touches the skin, it may lead to mild burning or itching.

The following information is not for use in the treatment or management of an actual poison exposure. If you have an exposure, you should call your local emergency number (such as 911) or the National Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. At home, do NOT make a person throw up unless told to do so by poison control or a health care professional. Before calling in the emergency, determine the following information and have it ready for emergency response: The patient's age, weight, and condition, name of the substance, time it was swallowed, and amount swallowed.

Poison Control: The National Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) can be called from anywhere in the United States. This national hotline number will let you talk to experts in poisoning. They will give you further instructions. This is a free and confidential service. All local poison control centers in the United States use this national number. You should call if you have any questions about poisoning or poison prevention. It does NOT need to be an emergency. You can call for any reason, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Emergency Room: The health care provider will measure and monitor the person's vital signs, including temperature, pulse, breathing rate, and blood pressure. Symptoms will be treated as appropriate. The person may not need to be seen in the emergency room, but if they are, they may receive activated charcoal (used to absorb toxic materials), medications to treat symptoms, laxatives (to push toxic substances out of the body and reduce intestinal absorption) and a prognosis for recovery. How well the person does depends on the amount of the substance swallowed and how quickly treatment is received. The faster the person gets medical help, the better the chance for recovery. Recovery is very likely because chlorophyll is relatively nonpoisonous.

Prevention: Do not touch or eat any plant with which you are not familiar. Do not take food supplements or vitamins without reading the label. Carefully follow dosage instructions and do not take more than the recommended dosage. Wash your hands after working in the garden or walking in the woods. Chlorophyll can cause skin to become extra-sensitive to the sun. Wear sunblock outside, especially if you are light-skinned.

HerbsPro: Greenlife, Sonne Products, #10, 360 Tabs (49559)
Greenlife has been produced since 1953 and was the original pioneer of cereal grass products. Greenlife is the dried, extracted juices of organically grown cereal grasses: barley, oats, rye and wheat. The grasses are cut at the young, rapidly growing stage just as the first joint emerges through the ground and when the maximum nutrition is in the blade. The grass is ground, the juice is extracted, most of the fiber is removed, then it is chilled. In this cold state, the grass is dried by a roll-vacuum process, then tableted and bottled in nitrogen to avoid oxidation and spoilage. Every possible precaution is taken to preserve vitamin, mineral and enzyme factors. The cereal grasses - a complete food in and of themselves - are nontoxic in any consumable amount. It provides a well-balanced, natural, whole food supplement from the grasses and other natural sources with enzymes, minerals, amino acids and every essential vitamin, plus many unknown and as yet unnamed nutritional factors. No chemical fertilizers or poisonous insecticides are used or needed.

  • SPIRULINA SUPPLEMENTS & PRODUCTS

Spirulina (Blue Green Algae) is rich in chlorophyll, beta carotene, vitamins (including Vitamin B-12), minerals, amino acids, DNA, RNA, and enzymes. Spirulina contains phytonutriets that appear to boost the immune system and stabilizes blood sugar levels. Spirulina contains as much protein as soy. The high concentration of amino acids has made spirulina a popular nutritional supplement for those who are unable to obtain sufficient calories and protein through diet alone, particularly athletes who burn calories at a high rate. In addition to amino acids, spirulina is also a rich source of numerous other nutrients, including many essential vitamins and minerals. Research into the medical benefits of spirulina is ongoing, but there is no doubt about its nutritional benefits. Among other things, it contains as much iron as equivalent weights of beef.
