    CHINESE PRIVET HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Chinese Privet is also known as Nu Zhen Zi. Chinese Privet is in the Oleaceae family. There are two primary common species of Chinese Privet, Ligustrum sinense (also known as Ligustrum villosum May, Nepal Privet, Chinese liguster, Chinese ligustrum, hedge privet, ligustrum, narrow-leaf privet, narrowleaf privet, privet, small leaved privet, small-leaf privet, smallleaf privet, small-leaved privet) and Ligustrum lucidum (also known as Glossy Privet, Broadleaf Privet, Tree Privet). Another species is Common Privet (Ligustrum vulare) that is also known as European Privet.

Ligustrum is Latin for Privet. Broad-leaved Privet (Ligustrum lucidum) - Lucidum is Latin for shiny and refers to the glossy leaves. Chinese Privet (Ligustrum sinense) - Sinense is Latin for Chinese and refers to its country of origin. Chinese Privet (Ligustrum sinense) is very similar to Broad-Leaved Privet (Ligustrum lucidum ) and Common Privet (Ligustrum vulgar). It is most commonly found invading the understory of moist areas. It is also relatively similar to Indian Hawthorn (Rhaphiolepis indica ). These species can be distinguished by the following differences:

chinese privet leaves - L. Sinense

    LIGUSTRUM SINENSE

Chinese Privet (Ligustrum sinense) has somewhat hairy (i.e. pubescent) younger stems and usually grows up to 3 to 5 meters tall. Its relatively small opposite leaves (2 to 7 cm long) are dull on the upper surface with rounded tips and have entire margins, are hairy on the midrib underneath and are usually present year-round (i.e. it is evergreen). Twigs are also hairy. Chinese Privet is a perennial, evergreen to semi evergreen shrub or small tree with many stout branches and clusters of small white flowers at then ends of branches that produce bluish-black, berry-like fruit with a powdery coating. L. sinense has spherical 4 to 6 mm diameter fruit.

Copious amounts of fruits are produced. The berries turn black when ripe and are gobbled up by birds, which spread the seeds far and wide. The trunk is usually forked near the base. Bark is a smooth gray with lenticels. The shade under a Chinese Privet is often so dense that almost nothing can grow underneath it. Chinese Privet is showy in bloom, covered with sprays of sickly-sweet, fragrant small white flowers. The petals are tubular with 4 bent back lobes with purple anthers. L. sinense has a tube is 2 mm long with 3 mm long lobes. L. sinense has loose panicles, 100 mm long.

    LIGUSTRUM LUCIDUM

Broad-Leaved Privet (Ligustrum lucidum ) has hairless (i.e. glabrous) younger stems and grows up to 10 to 12 meters or more tall. It is a fast growing evergreen, hairless round headed tree with large egg shaped leaves. Its relatively large leaves (4 to 12 cm long) have entire margins and are present year-round (i.e. it is evergreen). The oval leaves are dark green and glossy on the upper surface. The other common Ligustrum is Glossy Privet (Ligustrum lucidum), which has much larger leaves. To separate this from other introduced Ligustrum species, note that the branches are densely pubescent, the leaves are pubescent beneath on the midrib. It has opposite leaves that are smooth underneath.

    chinese privet L. lucidum flowers

The sprays of small white flowers are on pedicels, and the flower tube is shorter than the lobes. The flower tube is slightly shorter than the lobes. L. lucidum has broadly pyramid shaped panicles, 250 mm long by 200 mm wide. The fragrant white flowers are small, 6 mm diameter with tubular petals with 4 bent back lobes and has yellow anthers.
  • Common Privet (Ligustrum vulgare ) has hairless (i.e. glabrous) or finely hairy (i.e. puberulent) younger stems and grows up to 5 meters tall. Its relatively small leaves (2 to 6 cm long) have entire margins and are often lost during winter (i.e. it is deciduous). Common Privet is a perennial, deciduous shrub with many stout branches and clusters of small white flowers at then ends of branches that produce bluish-black, berry-like fruit with a powdery coating. L. Lucidum has elliptical, 6 mm long by 5 mm wide fruit.

    PLANT IDENTIFICATION CONFUSION

Indian Hawthorn (Rhaphiolepis indica ) has hairless (i.e. glabrous) or slightly hairy (i.e. puberulent) younger stems and usually grows up to 2 meters tall. Its moderately-sized leaves (3 to 7 cm long) have coarsely toothed (i.e. serrate) margins and are usually present year-round (i.e. it is evergreen).

  • Chinese Privet (Ligustrum sinense) may also be confused with Australian Native Privet (Ligustrum australianum), which is present in northern and central Queensland. With small, opposite, thickened leaves, it is not likely to be confused with native trees, though young ones can be confused with Coralberry (Symphoricarpos orbiculatus), which is a low shrub with thinner leaves. However, Native Privet (Ligustrum australianum) has smaller flowers with petals only about 2 mm long.

It is sometimes also confused with various native rainforest species when not in flower or fruit, including Cheese Tree (Glochidion ferdinandii) and many of the lilly-pilly's (Syzygium spp.). The less common Border Privet (Ligustrum obtusifolium) could be easily confused mistaken for Chinese Privet when not in bloom.

CHINESE PRIVET & TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE

For over 1,000 years Chinese Privet has been used in traditional Chinese medicine. It has antibacterial, antiseptic, anti-tumor, cardio-tonic, diuretic and tonic properties. In traditional Chinese medicine the leaves are used to treat cold, congestion, fever, pain, abscesses, headache, swelling, vertigo, and broken bones. The fruit of Privet is used as a general tonic and is said to invigorate, brighten the eyes, and drive out diseases. Chinese herbalists believe ligustrum has several anti-aging effects, such as reversing graying hair and restoring firmness to the skin and youthfulness to the body.

The privet fruit is native to China and Eastern Europe, but has now been naturalized throughout the world. It was introduced into the US in 1852 for use as an ornamental. The glossy fruit of the privet bush is one of the oldest Chinese herbal remedies, used for over 2,000 years, at least from the time of the writing of the Divine Husbandmanís Classic of the Materia Medica in 190 BCE. It has cooling properties that are known to help the yin, and augment weakness in the liver and kidneys. Known in Chinese as the "female chastity seed," privet fruit was an ancient remedy for premature graying of the hair, ringing in the ear, spots before the eyes, and lower back pain, all of which were associated with excessive sexual activity. It has often been combined with chrysanthemum and wolfberries, and then used as a tonic.

CHINESE PRIVET USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Chinese Privet fruit is used in traditional Chinese medicinal therapy to treat meny health concerns.

The fruit of Chinese Privet, in combination with other herbs, is used to help treat hepatitis, kidney problems, tinnitis, vertigo, cataracts, and rheumatic pains. It is also for premature menopause, backache, and insomnia. Scientific research has found this plant to be effective in treating respiratory tract infections, hypertension, and Parkinson's disease.

Other scientific studies have shown that Chinese Privet increases the white blood cell count, which can help prevent bone marrow loss in cancer chemotherapy patients, and recent studies have also shown that Chinese Privet, when combined with Astragalus, can provide increased immunity that is being used during standard cancer therapy.

Sweet and bitter at the same time, Privet fruit is added to herbal combinations to clear out the "heat" associated with infection and emotional tension.

Chinese medicine also uses Privet fruit to treat dizziness and blurred vision, especially if symptoms are worse during times of emotional stress.

Modern research has found that the fatty acids in Privet fruit are especially helpful for protecting the body from contamination with heavy metals, notably arsenic and cadmium.

Classically known as Augmented Jade Windscreen, this formula is used to build defensive energy (wei qi) and Consolidate the Surface (protect against cold, flu, and other illness-causing invasions). Jade Shield augments the Qi, Stabilizes the Exterior. The traditional formula was improved with the addition of Ligustrum lucidum (privit fruit / Nu Zhen Zi) and Cinammomi ramulus (cinammon twig / Gui Zhi). Adding Ligustrum expands the immune enhancing property of astragalus while reducing the drying properties of both the atractylodes and the ledebouriella. Replacing some siler and bai zhu with cinnamon twig also reduces dryness. These changes makes the formula more potent and suitable for long-term use for those with dry or yin deficient constitutions.
