Chickweed (Stellaria media, Stellaria spp.) is also known as Mouse-Ear, Adders Mouth, Satin Flower, Satinflower, Starweed, Star Weed, Starwort, Tongue-Grass, Alsine, Chick Wittles, Winterweed, and Winter Weed.

Chickweed is an English herb easily recognized by its straggling, succulent stems bearing paired leaves and white star shaped flowers. It is said that there is no part of the world where chickweed does not grow; it is even found in the North Arctic regions.

Chickweed is an herb, but often it is thought of as a weed. This herb has a long growing season and its pollen is a common cause of springtime allergies. Chickweed is one of few sources of fresh seed for birds in the winter. Chickweed is a European native that has naturalized throughout the world in fertile, mineral rich soil. The herb is often found growing under Oak trees. The name Stellaria refers to Chickweed’s tiny, white, star shaped flowers. 17th Century English physician Nicholas Culpeper described chickweed as "a fine soft pleasing herb under the dominion of the moon."

As a traditional folk remedy, Chickweed was used to treat asthma, indigestion, eczema and psoriasis.

Herbalists use it primarily to support the urinary system, while others use it for the nutrients it supplies that help the body’s metabolism-balancing functions. This herb contains vitamins A and C, and some B vitamins, plus calcium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.

Chickweed nourishes the gastrointestinal areas and has soothing properties. It is a natural blood cleanser, as well as an herb that addresses fat accumulations.

Today Chickweed is still used to regulate the metabolism and aids in digestion, but it also helps relieve the symptoms of nasal congestion, bronchitis, colds, and coughs. Chickweed is also used to aid in circulation. As a poultice, this herb works well on skin diseases such as eczema, psoriasis, warts, rashes, itches, scabs, redness in the eyes (including conjunctivitis), and ears. An infusion or tincture works well on boils, carbuncles, abscesses, skin eruptions, infections, diseases, sores, and swellings.

Read the label instructions and following the directions you will achieve the best results.

Chickweed constituents are Coumarins, rutin, B vitamins, iron, saponins, thiamine, niacin, and vitamin C. The entire aerial plant parts are used for herbal preparations. Typical preparations include a tincture or ointment. These are the most common preparations. Chickweed may be encapsulated or taken as a tea. For external preparations, it may be used in salves or infused in oil or added to ointments.

Making a tea of Chickweed can be done by placing two ounces of fresh chickweed leaves and stems in a warmed glass container. Bring 2.5 cups of fresh, non-chlorinated water to the boiling point and then add it to the herbs. Cover and infuse the tea for about 10 minutes. Stain and drink warm. The prepared tea will store for about two days in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Chickweed tea may be enjoyed by the cupful up to three times a day.

A strong infusion may be used as a skin wash or bath additive to soothe itching and inflamed skin.

Chickweed is generally regarded as safe when taken in the recommended doses.

Chickweed taken in excessive doses have induced vomiting and diarrhea.

Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known.

HerbsPro: PMS Tea, For Premenstrual Water Retention, Traditional Medicinals Teas, 16 Tea Bags (19374)
PMS Tea promotes a healthy pre-menstrual cycle because it contains herbs traditionally used to support the kidneys' function of relieving fluids. The kidneys filter and reabsorb calcium, magnesium and potassium and regulate fluid volume and flow, important functions during the pre-menstrual cycle. Dandelion, cornsilk and nettle contain beneficial flavonoids and minerals, most notably potassium. This concentration of flavonoids and potassium is responsible for PMS Tea’s beneficial action on the structure and function of the kidneys and bladder. By supplementing with potassium-containing herbs during the pre-menstrual cycle, the kidneys are supported, rather than depleted, during this period of naturally fluctuating fluid levels. Tea contains organic dandelion root, chicory root, parsley leaf, stinging nettle leaf, uva ursi leaf, cornsilk style and stigma, carob pod, barley kernel, oat straw herb, chickweed herb, and crampbark.
