    CARAWAY HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Caraway (Carum carvi) is also known as Caraway Seed, Karawya, Roman Cumin, Anis des Vosges, Apium carvi, Carvi Fructus, Cumin des Pres, Haravi, Krishan Jeeraka, Krishnajiraka, Kummel, Kummich, Semen Cumini Pratensis, Semences de Carvi, Wiesen-Feldkummel, and Wild Cumin.

    caraway seed

Caraway is a biennial with feathery leaves that grow from the stem in opposite pairs or in threes. The branches of the stems end in clusters of tiny white flowers and the flower heads resemble those of carrots in bloom. The seeds are long, ribbed, and brownish. Caraway has been used both as a medicine and a spice for hundreds of years. Dioscorides prescribed Caraway oil to pale-faced girls to give color to their complexion. At one time it was used as a carminative cordial and as a treatment for dyspepsia and for symptoms of hysteria. Caraway has similar actions as anise and fennel; tonic, stimulant, antispasmodic, astringent, purgative and digestive properties. Specifically, the seeds have diuretic, expectorant, and tonic actions.

CARAWAY USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Today Caraway is used more as a spice than medicine.

    CULINARY USES

The warming and aromatic "seeds" of the Caraway plant are used to give a distinctive flavor to rye bread, cabbage, soups, pickles, teas, liqueurs, and spirits. Caraway is said to have been used in Europe longer than any other condiment. A more aromatic and bitter alternative to Cumin, Caraway is key to Indian, Dutch, German, Russian, and Scandinavian cooking. Although it has an affinity to cooked cabbage and coleslaw, a little ground Caraway added at the end of cooking (to avoid bitterness) will add a pleasant and unexpected taste to both sweets and savories.

    MEDICINAL USES

Eating Caraway seed after a meal is a great way to freshen the breath. Chewing the seed also helps promote digestion and improves the appetite. It can also help purge intestinal worms. The seeds are frequently used in bronchitis and cough remedies for children as well as for adults, but also works well in treating constipation, diarrhea, laryngitis, hiatal hernia, indigestion, laryngitis, menstrual cramps, sharp intestinal pains, and stomach ulcers. Caraway oil is an ingredient in mouthwashes and after shave lotions. Caraway stimulates breast milk production.

    ESSENTIAL OIL USES

Caraway Essential Oil is used for flatulent indigestion and works well to soothe colic in infants. The oil is also useful in treating scabies.

    caraway oil

    CARAWAY ESSENTIAL OIL OVERVIEW

Caraway, or Carum carvi, has been used as a medicine and a spice for millennia. An aromatic biennial member of the Umbelliferae family, it is closely related to Anise and Fennel and thus bears similar medicinal qualities. Caraway seeds have been prized as a natural digestive aid since the ancient Romans baked them into their cakes and pastries to promote proper digestion after sumptuous banquets. In fact, the therapeutic value of the seeds is derived from the presence of essential oil.

The oil, extracted from the seeds by steam distillation, can help relieve digestive complaints. Caraway oil has carminative properties that help regulate intestinal function, dispel gas, alleviate abdominal cramps, ease bloating and boost your appetite. When used in steam inhalations, the oil promotes expectoration and alleviates congestion due to bronchitis, colds and sinus infections. It can also be applied topically to soothe joint pain caused by rheumatism and arthritis. Cosmetically, the oil helps to regulate sebum production and reduces acne, oily skin and unsightly blemishes.

EXTRA BLENDING TIP: Caraway oil is often used as a "middle" note to give fullness to perfumes. It blends well with woodsy and balsamic scents for an herbal, earthy fragrance.

THERAPEUTIC EFFECT: Caraway oil contains carvone, dihydropinol, carvol and limonene, which have an invigorating effect on the entire body. The oil strengthens and regulates digestion and is effective for indigestion, bloating, gas (flatulence), nervous stomach, relief of intestinal cramps, diarrhea, stomach ache, and poor appetite (boosting the appetite). It is used for relief of menstrual cramps. Inhaling the oil loosens mucus and eases respiratory congestion and is effective for sinus inflammations and congestion. As a gargle it is effective for sore throats and bad breath. Applied topically, the oil helps treat acne and oily skin. The oil is also effective for physical and mental exhaustion.

TAKE CARE: Because Caraway oil can irritate the skin, it should always be diluted and used only externally in very small doses. Young children and pregnant or nursing women may instead want to consider using Fennel and Aniseed oils, which offer similar effects.
