Cabbage (Brassica oleracea, Capitata) is also known as Colewort.

Wild Cabbage is native to the coasts of the English Channel and the Mediterranean, but cultivated varieties are produced world wide as a vegetable. This plant has been cultivated for more than 4,000 years. The 1st Century healer Dioscorides recommended it for a variety of ailments, including diarrhea, snakebites and worms.

The Cabbage plant has been called "the poor manís medicine chest," and "doctor of the poor." The ancient Romans used it as an antidote to intoxication and to prevent a hangover. The Greeks gave Cabbage to expectant mothers right before the birth to help stimulate breast milk production. Early sailors used Cabbages to ward off scurvy, and it was also used to remedy tuberculosis (TB).

Cabbage - Green and Red Leaf

Today, Cabbage juice is used as an intestinal cleanser and detoxifier. This plant has also been used to purify the blood.

Cabbage contains vitamins A, B, C, and E, and calcium, sulfur, silica, magnesium, iodine, iron, chlorophyll and phosphorus. The leaves are anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-rheumatic. Due to its iron and chlorophyll content, it is used to treat anemia, as well as anxiety, depression, insomnia, and exhaustion. Studies have shown Cabbage aids in the breakdown of toxins in the liver, which may give some validity to the Romans who used Cabbage to counteract intoxication and for the prevention of hangovers. Cabbage leaves make great poultices for treating infected wounds. Cabbage leaves are given to breastfeeding mothers to stimulate the breast milk, and to relieve peptic ulcers, gastritis, heartburn, and ulcerative colitis. It is also used to stimulate digestion and to relieve constipation. Using Cabbage in soups and teas works well for treating colds, flu, sinusitis, and sore throats. Like other brassicas (plant category), Cabbage can help lower the risk of cancer, especially colon cancer and the growth of polyps. Preliminary studies have shown that Cabbage metabolizes estrogen, which can help reduce susceptibility to breast, uterine, and ovarian cancers when eaten regularly.

Modern research of today largely confirms its ancient use in folk medicine, and it has been shown to stimulate the immune system and the production of antibodies. Its sulfur compounds are largely responsible for its antiseptic, antibiotic and disinfectant actions, especially in the respiratory system.

To receive the most nutritional value from Cabbage, it is best to eat it raw, lightly cooked, or in a supplement form.

Cooking and processing destroys much of the antioxidant and anti-estrogenic properties contained in this vegetable. Cabbage also comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For best results, read and follow product label directions.

Cabbage is generally regarded as safe since it has long since been used as a food.

People with thyroid gland problems should avoid Cabbage and related members of the cabbage family. Consumption of foods such as Cabbage can help naturally suppress thyroid hormone production. If you have any health issues or questions concerning your thyroid, consult with a health care provider before you use products with Cabbage or other members of the cabbage family.

Sauerkraut, made from Cabbage, can trigger migraine headaches in some people.
