    BUPLEURUM HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Bupleurum (Bupleurum chinese, Bupleurum chinense, Bupleurum scorzoneraefolium, Bupleurum falcatum), Hare's Ear, Hare's Ear Root, Chai Hu, Chinese Thoroughwax, and Thorowax Root.

Bupleurum is an Asian plant that is part of the Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) family, and resembles dill or fennel, but it has long thin leaves rather instead of the lacy appearance of fennel and dill leaves. Bupleurum has been taken in China for over 2,000 years as a liver tonic. The bitter, acrid, cooling root of the bupleurum plant has a Chinese name that literally means "kindling of the barbarians." The plant itself is a perennial ornamental that has sickle shaped leaves and clusters of small yellow flowers.

Bupleurum is believed to strengthen liver qi and to have a tonic action on the spleen and stomach. The Chinese believe Bupleurum can treat "disharmony" between the liver and the spleen, a condition that manifests itself in problems of the digestive system such as abdominal pain, bloating, nausea and indigestion. Bupleurum has anti-inflammatory properties. The roots of the plant are used in herbal medicine.

BUPLEURUM USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Bupleurum root, as its Latin appellation (bupleurem chinense) suggests, is obtained from a plant native to China, where it is known as chai hu. It is one of the most important botanicals used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM); such practitioners suggest that Bupleuren root is effective in regulating one's qi, or "life-force," and like St. John's Wort, used in TCM for depression.

Bupleurum is used to treat chronic diseases such as asthma, epilepsy, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and liver cirrhosis.

Scientific studies have shown it strengthens the immune system and improves liver function, and is used to treat hepatitis. It can also prevent some liver diseases from becoming liver cancer.

Bupleurum is sometimes used for treating hemorrhoids and for prolapsed tissues in the pelvis or uterus.

In Chinese medicine this herb is used to reduce fever when accompanied by irritability, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness and vertigo.
