    BROOM HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Broom (Sarothamnus scoparius syn. Cytisus scoparius) is also known as Common Broom, Genista, Irish Broom, Link and Scotch Broom.

Broom is a stiffly branched shrub that grows to 10 feet. Bright yellow pea-like flowers of bloom singly or in pairs along the branches that produce brown, hairy seedpods 2 to 3 inches long.

In the Middle Ages, the twigs and branches of this herb were used to clean the floors, but they claimed Broom could also ward off witches. In the 12th century, the count of Anjou affixed Broom as a badge on his helmet, and a century later, a knighthood founded by Louis IX of France, chose Broom as its emblem of humility. By the 16th century Broom was noted for its use as a diuretic, cathartic (strong laxative) and purgative.
