BRAZIL NUT HERBAL DESCRIPTION
The Brazil Nut tree (Bertholletia excelsa) is an enormous evergreen from South America that often grows to heights of 150 to 160 feet or more, with branches emerging only from its top. It is a truly unique plant, even in the incredible world of flora that is the Amazonian rainforest. A Brazil Nut Tree can be seen growing almost anywhere, be it the side road, private garden, or a parking lot. It has a large woody seedpod containing from 15 to 25 nuts, which grow to about size of a large grapefruit. For hundreds of years the Brazil Nut has been a dietary staple and a trade commodity of the indigenous tribes of the Amazon rain forests. The nuts are rich in protein the anti-oxidants vitamin E and selenium, and in monounsaturated fats which can help counteract some forms of heart disease. The seed of the tree's fruit, which we call Brazil nuts, takes a special place among other nuts due to its high content of selenium and some special properties.
The Brazil nut tree can live for over five hundred years, and there are some specimens today that are believed to be one thousand years old. The plant is the only one in its family, which means that the species is truly unique. However, the most interesting thing about this tree is its fruit. It is extremely hard and rather large. It is also extremely heavy, to the point that it is considered a hazard. Falling nuts can, and often do, cause damage to vehicles and even people who are not cautious enough. When they fall into the water, they can clog drains and cause other similar problems. Yet, the respect the local people have for the Brazil nut tree is so high that they accept the dangers and actually forbid destroying the trees. At the moment, Brazil has an official law stating that cutting a Brazil nut tree is illegal, regardless of where it grows. Luckily for the people living in the cities, these trees rarely produce fruits while out of perfect rainforest conditions. This is one of the main reasons why the nuts are so precious, as even growing them on plantations is a huge challenge.
The fruit matures over 14 months, which slows down the production further. Each fruit holds between 8 and 24 seeds, but they can be looted by agoutis if the farmers are not careful. The good news is that the little rodents bury some of the seeds, which may germinate and bring about a new tree. Unfortunately, it would take many years to mature. One mature tree brings only about 300 pods (up to 24 seeds each) over the cycle of 14 months. As you can see, Brazil nuts are indeed rare and organic Brazil nuts are even rarer. However, their value is so high that everyone should try eating them as often as possible.
BRAZIL NUT USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE
Today tribes of the Amazon rain forest still drink a tea made from the bark as a remedy for liver ailments. A seedpod tea is used for treating stomachaches. The nonmetallic element selenium has been shown to improve mood, elevate mental functioning, and increase blood flow to the brain. Brazil Nut oil is used in hair-conditioning products, soaps, and skin creams as both a cleanser and moisturizer.
The kernels of Brazil nut fruits are deliciously sweet and buttery. Their taste is unique when compared to other nuts, which makes them a fantastic snack on their own as well as an interesting addition to some classic recipes.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF BRAZIL NUTS
Like all edible nuts, raw Brazil nuts are exceptionally good for your health. In some ways, their benefits are similar to those of others, but there are some that are unique to this specific food. The reasons to enjoy a couple of these delicious treats on a daily basis include:
RAW BRAZIL NUTS & SELENIUM NUTRITION
- Brazil nuts make for a healthy source of energy. Brazil nuts raw calorie content is large enough to give you a boost of power, so they serve as a great snack you can use to recharge your batteries in an office or before going to the gym for a workout. The fat content in the nuts is moderately high, like with all foods of this kind. However, you should never forget that our bodies need healthy fats to function properly, and it is the exact kind of fat contained in these nuts.
- Brazil nuts give you an antioxidant boost. The environmental pollution and a variety of other factors made oxidation a serious issue that gradually wears down our health. There is no 100-percent effective defense that can protect you from the negative influence of free radicals. Antioxidants are the elements that slow down their destructive influence. Raw Brazil nuts contain a variety of potent antioxidants that act on different levels, thus offering your body comprehensive protection. In particular, they have a high level of vitamin E, a well known antioxidant and an element that is present in every cell of the body as it plays a part in keeping the cell membranes whole.
- Brazil nuts benefit your heart. Nuts are heart-friendly by default, and Brazil nuts, in particular, contain large amounts of palmitoleic and oleic acids, which are important mono-saturated fatty acids. These elements are promoting good cholesterol levels in the body. As a result, your vessels become stronger and more flexible.
- Brazil nuts help you to manage weight. Eating Brazil nuts raw is a good idea for weight management as this allows you to taste a delicious treat as well as get a large amount of essential nutrients. In addition, nuts are packed with dietary fiber, which means they benefit your digestion. Please be aware that nuts are a high-calorie kind of food, so you must eat them in moderation, especially when on a stringent diet.
- Brazil nuts help normalize your hormone levels. This particular benefit comes from selenium, an element that makes the nutritional value of Brazil nuts stand out. It affects the thyroid gland, which produces a vast range of important hormones. Your whole body benefits by maintaining its healthy function.
- Brazil nuts strengthen your immunity. Brazil nuts contain zinc and even a small amount of vitamin C. Both these elements play an important role in supporting the immune system. Zinc, in particular, affects the speed of healing.
Selenium is an essential mineral that participates in a variety of very important processes within the human body. We must consume small amounts of it on a daily basis in order to stay in good health. Raw Brazil nuts make for one of the most delicious ways to get your daily fix of this nutrient. They are also almost the only way for vegans to get this element as other food sources of selenium are fish, shrimp, beef, and turkey. Unlike with animal sources, the mineral from the nuts does not break down during cooking. Some whole grains also contain selenium, however, they lose over 60-percent of its originally meager content during the processing. Brazil nuts are, without a doubt, the best plant-based source of the element. In order to stay healthy, an adult should consume 55 mcg selenium per day. Considering the level of it in these extraordinary nuts, eating two pieces a day would get you the necessary boost.
Selenium is so important for the general wellbeing because it is an extremely potent antioxidant. In fact, this particular element is necessary to ensure the function of enzymes directly responsible for removing toxins from the body. It is very wise to combine your Brazil nuts raw snack with foods rich in vitamin C, because these same enzymes are responsible for the recycling of this element. Therefore, selenium enhances the antioxidant effect of vitamin C.
The other vitally important function of the mineral that makes eating Brazil nuts regularly a smart idea is its effect on the thyroid gland. Another enzyme that contains selenium is affecting the transformation of a thyroid hormone T4 into T3, which is more active. The hormonal balance within a human body is extremely delicate, and once it gets out of alignment, the negative effects can spread to every system. Therefore, you should always do your best to maintain this precarious balance. Leading a healthy lifestyle and eating a well-balanced diet are the best ways to go about it.
BRAZIL NUT RECIPES & SERVING TIPS
You can enjoy Brazil Nuts in a great number of ways. The easiest is just to eat a few raw nuts directly from their storage pack. Roasted Brazil nuts have a stronger flavor and aroma. You might consider making salted Brazil nuts on your own or covering them with your favorite spices. Chocolate covered Brazil nuts are a particular favorite for children.
You can also use the nuts to create a variety of tasty dishes. Brazil nut milk is a great choice, especially if you flavor it with vanilla and cinnamon. The treat is truly exquisite and allows you to enjoy a huge nutritional boost.
BRAZIL NUT CHEESE RECIPE
Vegans are sure to love Brazil nut cheese, which is rather easy to make. You will only need one cup of Brazil Nuts, 1/4 cup Nutritional Yeast, and 1/2 teaspoon of Garlic Salt. Mix all the ingredients in a food processor and then refrigerate. This would be a great vegan alternative to parmesan that you can enjoy with salads, pasta, and sandwiches.
BRAZIL NUT SALAD WITH BLACK RICE RECIPE
We also suggest you try this amazing Brazil nut salad with black rice.
1/2 cup black rice
10 sliced mushrooms
3 tablespoons sliced fresh coriander roots
1/2 diced brown onion
1 handful fresh baby spinach
1 handful fresh basil leaves
1 handful coriander leaves (chopped)
2 handfuls Brazil nuts (roasted)
1 small red chili (sliced with the seeds removed)
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon agave
1/2 tablespoon lime juice
1/4 teaspoon ginger (minced)
1 clove garlic (minced)
Sesame oil (as much as necessary)
Cook the rice. To do this you need to rinse it thoroughly, bring to a boil, and cook for about 40 minutes. The length of cooking depends on the type of rice you use. You should consider rinsing the rice after it is cooked to remove any leftover starches. Cook the onion in a pan, then add the mushrooms and cook until they soften. Use the kind of oil you prefer. When cooked, set the mushrooms and onions on a paper towel so that the extra oil drains off them. Mix the dressing ingredients in a blender or just whisk them together in a bowl. Mix all the ingredients together into a delicious salad. You can serve it topped with noodles, either cold or warm. Brazil nuts also taste fantastic when crushed and sprinkled over desserts.
BRAZIL NUT DOSAGE INFORMATION
Brazil Nut comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For best results, read and follow product label directions.
Studies indicate that eating 2 to 4 Brazil nuts a day is perfectly safe, as this dose does not carry the risk of selenium overload. According to the National Academy of Sciences, the maximum safe level of daily selenium intake is 400 mcg.
BRAZIL NUT STORAGE
Store Brazil Nuts in a sealable ziploc bag that securely keeps the moisture out. As they contain oils, all nuts can go rancid. To prevent this, you must keep them dry.
BRAZIL NUT SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS INFORMATION
Brazil Nut is generally regarded as safe as both a food and medicine.
Be aware that Brazil nuts can cause an allergic reaction. People with any food sensitivities must be careful about eating them. If you experience an allergic reaction to Brazil Nut, please discontinue immediately.
