    BRAHMI HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri, Herpestis Monniera, or Moniera Cuneifolia) is also known as Bacopa, Water Hyssop, Thyme-Leaved Graticola, Jalanimba, Sambrani Chettu, Babies Tear, Nirbrahmi, Indian Pennywort, Moneywort, Rau Dang (Vietnamese). In English, it is commonly called the 'Herb of Grace'. Bacopa is a medicinal herb used in Ayurveda, where it is also known as Brahmi, after Brahma, the creator God of the Hindu pantheon. Please note that Brahmi is also the Ayurvedic name for Centella asiatica or more common name is Gotu Kola, particularly in North India, and Kerala . This identification of Brahmi as Centella asiatica has been in use for a long in northern India, although it may be a case of mistaken identification that was introduced during the 16th century. There are times when the two are confused as the same, but they are not for they are different plants with different properties.

Brahmi is an edible perennial creeping herb with numerous branches, small white flowers and crinkled leaves that is native to the wetlands and marshy places of southern India, Australia, Europe, Africa, Asia, and North and South America. Although it is native to India, it has spread throughout the tropics. Its leaves are bright green and look almost like those of a succulent, oblong and 4 to 6 mm thick. The leaves are oblanceolate (oval-shaped, a rounded apex and tapering base) and are arranged oppositely on the soft hairy stem. The flowers are small and white-purplish with four or five petals. Brahmi flowers bloom in most months of the year, while Brahmi fruit is oval and sharp at apex. It can grow to about 6 inches in height while Brahmi branches creeps horizontially covering the ground. It grows in damp, marshy areas, in both fresh and brackish water. It is commonly found throughout Southeast Asia, but has since migrated with great success to Florida and several other southern states in the US. Because of its easy adaptability, it is a favorite foliage for aquariums both big and small. It can even grown in slightly brackish conditions. Propagation is often achieved through cuttings.

Brahmi is related to spinach and snapdragons and grows in the waters of tropical marshes and wetlands in Florida (most the southern states with damp conditions by the pond or bog garden), Central America, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, China and Taiwan. The tops of the plant are used in herbal medicine and are an important herb in Ayurvedic medicine, mainly used as a brain and mental tonic to treat Alzheimer's disease, memory loss, insanity, insomnia and other mental illness. In India, this plant has also been used traditionally to consecrate newborn babies in the belief that it will open the gateway of intelligence. Brahmi is a name derived from Brahma, the creator god of the Hindu pantheon of deities. It is said that the use of Bacopa monnieri for memory goes back 3000 years or more in India. In the Vedic texts "Athar-Ved Samhita" of 800 B.C. it was cited for its medicinal properties, the main one being memory enhancement.

Supports memory, intelligence and concentration. Brahmi is used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine as brain tonic. Brahmi has naturally occurring nitric oxide that according to studies have positive effects in brain activity. Brahmi has Bacosides that release nitric oxide that relaxes the aorta and veins allowing smooth blood flow that nourishes the nerve cells, improving cognitive capability, promote mental clarity and focus. Brahmi is used as memory enhancer. In a study conducted to test the chronic effects of Brahmi (Bacopa monniera) on human memory done in University of Wollongong, Australia, suggests that Brahmi (Bacopa monniera) shows a significant action of enhancing the capacity of the subjects to retain new information while maintaining the capability of learning. Brahmi is used as treatment for Alzheimer's disease. In a study conducted on rats (J. Ethnopharmacol, 2009), a model was conducted where Alzheimer's disease is induced to rats. The rats were afterwards given Brahmi extract to determine its effects against Alzheimer's disease. The test showed that rats given a dose of up to 80 mg/kg of Brahmi extract had improved cognitive capability and mitigated the further reduction of brain neurons.

EPILEPSY: Brahmi is used as an epilepsy treatment. In a model study done on rats. Pilocarpine is used to induce epileptic episodes in rats. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) extract showed a positive effect to the epileptic hippocampus. The depressive behavior of epileptic rats was reversed when Brahmi extract were given if compared to those who receive no treatment.

NERVOUS SYSTEM: Brahmi supports proper function of the nervous system. Brahmi is used to treat pain due to nerve problems. A paste made from Brahmi leaves and carrier oil are applied to the the affected area to improve the symptoms. It is used to treat neuralgia and sciatica. Brahmi has neuroprotective effects. Studies conducted in Naresuan University in Thailand (2008), suggest that in an induced neuron cell death (neurotoxicity) in the primary cortical culture, Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) extract has a positive effect in neurons preventing the progressive reduction in mass thus mitigating neurodegeneration.

FREE RADICAL PROTECTION: Brahmi acts as an antioxidant. A study entitled Free radical scavenging capacity and protective effect of Bacopa monniera on DNA damage, 2003, suggests that Brahmi (Bacopa monniera) has an antioxidant capacity, scavenging free radicals in the body while protecting the DNA cleavage. This study in Brahmi action against free radicals has value in treating pathologies where free radical production is evident.

SKIN & HAIR: Brahmi is traditionally used to treat skin problems including psoriasis, eczema, abscess and ulceration. Brahmi is used to stimulate skin cell regeneration and growth. Promotes healthy skin and hair. It is a natural blood purifier and helps support clear, healthy skin. It is believed that Brahmi effects a mucosal offensive and defensive action, limiting the growth of helicobacter pylori, preventing gastric ulceration and promotes healing.

    BRAHMI & AYURVEDIC THERAPIES

Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri) is highly recommended in Ayurvedic therapies as a brain and nervine tonic that benefits both the mind and spirit and improves the intellect and consciousness; the cognitive disorders of aging. It assists in heightening mental acuity and supports the physiological processes involved in relaxation. The herb is cooling and relaxing, making it an excellent tonic for pitta. It also calms vata in the mind and reduces excess kapha in the body. A truly amazing herb that lives up to its name, which means the energy of universal consciousness.

Brahmi has also been reported to reduce oxidation of fats in the blood stream, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. It has been used in traditional Ayurvedi treatment for epilepsy and asthma. It is also used in Ayurveda for ulcers, tumors, ascites, enlarged spleen, indigestion, inflammations, leprosy, anemia, and biliousness.

Brahmi is considered the main rejuvenating herb for nerve and brain cells. Numerous studies have shown this herb's ability to help improve protein activity and protein synthesis, especially in brain cells, which can increase intelligence, longevity and memory and decrease senility and aging. Brahmi also has a sedative effect but instead of dulling the senses as other sedatives can do, this herb actually improves mental clarity. It can also be used to treat anxiety, and calm restlessness in children. It can enhance learning and academic performance, and sharpens short-term and long-term memory. It has been used as part of a treatment for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Brahmi has also been used for cleansing the blood, reducing fevers inflammations, and joint pain, irritable bowler syndrome, and many skin conditions. Some believe it stimulates air, skin, and nail growth.

In May 1996 the Royal Society of British Science published a paper on nitric oxide, calling it the marvel of the decade. The article explained that the nitric oxide in Brahmi has an extremely positive effect on learning and memory recall, as well as on blood circulation and the function of the liver, lungs and kidneys. Research is also being done on the use of nitric oxide to treat stroke and Alzheimer's sufferers. In 1998 the Nobel Prize for medicine was awarded to three pharmacologists for their discovery that nitric oxide, in its natural form, has powerful potential as a messenger molecule in the body. A recent scientific study showed that Brahmi has potent antioxidant properties, which is why it was also revered in India for strengthening the immune system, improving vitality and performance and promoting longevity. The task of antioxidants in the body is to clean up free radical molecules. A free radical is an unstable chemical fragment, which can cause chaos by damaging DNA, corroding cell membranes and destroying cells.

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN RESEARCH STUDY DOSAGES

According to the University of Michigan Health System, Brahmi has a traditional role for treating several health disorders and for improving memory, learning and general mental function. Research with humans has used an extract standardized for 55-percent bacosides, as noted by the UMHS, taken in daily doses of 300 to 450 mg. Standard dosages listed by the University of Maryland Medical Center for certain conditions are lower. Brahmi is commonly available in dried extracts formulated into tablets or capsules. The UMMC cautions people to consult with a qualified health care provider before beginning any herbal therapy.

Stress Symptoms: Brahmi may be beneficial for relieving symptoms of stress and anxiety, at doses of 50 to 100 mg taken three times per day, according to the UMMC. Along with relieving symptoms resulting from generally stressful situations, this dosage of Brahmi may be helpful for treating hypochondriasis, a fear or preoccupation with the possibility of having serious illness. It also may help lessen symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, commonly called PTSD. This condition may develop after an extremely stressful or frightening event, particularly if feelings of helplessness were involved.

General Mental Functioning: Research using 300 mg of Brahmi per day has found benefits for mental functioning. A study published in the August 2001 issue of Psychopharmacology observed participants taking either bacopa or a placebo for 12 weeks. Bacopa supplementation appeared to significantly increase participants' speed of visual information processing, and improve learning rate and memory. Additionally, during a study published in the July 2008 issue of the Journal of Alternative & Complementary Medicine, healthy participants aged 65 and older received either a placebo or 300 mg of bacopa daily. Those taking bacopa experienced both enhanced word recall memory and ability to ignore irrelevant information. They also experienced a decrease in depression and anxiety scores compared to the placebo group.

Parkinson's Disease: Brahmi also is used as alternative medicine to treat people with Parkinson's disease. This progressive central nervous system disorder causes tremors, slowed movement, altered gait and rigidity. Brahmi effects particularly beneficial for Parkinson's patients include improved circulation to the brain, better general neurological and cognitive function, and improved mood, according to the UMMC. Some health care providers suggest 100 to 200 mg of Brahmi twice daily for treating Parkinson's disease.

BRAHMI SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS INFORMATION

Generally safe. Brahmi is considered safe for most adults if taken at recommended dosage and for a limited time (not more than 12 weeks). Just like in any other herbal medicines, moderation of use is recommended. Prolonged use is discouraged. Over use may manifest side effects such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, feeling of fatigue, nausea and dry mouth. May cause allergic reaction. There are reports that contact may cause skin allergic reaction to sensitive people.

There are no known safety issues or interactions associated with Brahmi when taken in the recommended doses; however, women with conditions of excess estrogen production (or who take estrogen replacement therapy or birth control pills) should avoid this herb, since an interaction between estrogen and increased GABA can cause temporary hearing loss.

According to a recent animal study in Contraception, Bacopa monnieri may affect male fertility in male mice. According to a 2006 study at Southern Cross University, the hersaponin in bacopa caused gastrointestinal problems including increased stool frequency, abdominal cramps and nausea. According to a 2001 study in Psychopharmacology, dry mouth, excessive thirst and increased frequency of urination were reported. Bacopa monnieri is a central nervous system depressant with anti-anxiety and sedative effects. It can have a barbituate-like effect depending on the dose. Bacopa monnieri can cause heart palpitations. Brahmi has potential to slow heart rate. Brahmi might slow down the heart beat. This could be a problem in people who already have a slow heart rate. Check with your health care provider before taking this herb if you have heart problems.

Drug Interactions: Do not take Bacopa monnieri if you are taking any antidepressant or antipsychotic medication that is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes, such as Sertraline hydrochloride (trade names Zoloft and Lustral). Bacopa can affect the way these medications are metabolized and eliminated from the body, thereby allowing too much or too little of the drug to enter the blood. There may be danger of underdose or overdose.

Do not take bacopa monnieri if you are taking thyroid medication as bacopa can enhance drugs that stimulate the thyroid, and can inhibit drugs that suppress the thyroid. Brahmi might increase levels of thyroid hormones T3 and T4. Brahmi should be used cautiously if you have thyroid condition.

Bacopa might increase fluid secretions in the lung. There is concern that this could worsen lung conditions such as asthma or emphysema.

Check with your health care provider before taking Bacopa monnieri if you are taking calcium blocking drugs, as bacopa may enhance their effect.

Bacopa monnieri may enhance the effect of sedatives, benzodiazepines and antidepressants. Check with your health care provider before taking bacopa if you are taking these drugs. Do not drive or operate machinery when taking bacopa.

Warning: Do not take bacopa monnieri if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. There are no sufficient studies done to determine the safe use of Brahmi herbal medicine during pregnancy and breast feeding. It is best to avoid its use.
