BOSWELLIA - FRANKINCENSE USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Today Boswellia is used widely as incense and in cosmetic makeup; however, it is also used to relieve bronchitis and laryngitis when used with steam inhalation.

Recently though, it has been discovered that this herb contains certain substances called Boswellic acids, which are known to have anti-inflammatory properties, therefore, Boswellia is often suggested as a treatment for bursitis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and tendonitis as well. Preliminary research shows that this herb may also protect cartilage from damage. Boswellia or Indian frankincense is an Ayurvedic herb that is used traditionally to support the treatment of arthritis, ulcerative colitis, sores, and asthma.

The major components are boswellic acid and alpha-boswellic acid. Studies show that Boswellic acid is a potent 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor that has anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects. It is a very popular ingredient in high-end topical products and oral nutritional supplements. Research/Studies have shown that the Boswellic acids have an anti-inflammatory action. This action is much like the conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), used for many inflammatory conditions. As opposed to NSAIDS, long-term use of Boswellia does not lead to irritation or ulceration of the stomach. Research in India found that an extract of Boswellia was more beneficial, less toxic and more potent that the standard drug of choice for rheumatic disorders (Ketoprofen).

    BOSWELLIA SERRATA FRANKINCENSE

Boswellia is the purified resin made from the gum of the Boswellia serrata tree. The sticky resin or sap from the tree is also called Indian Frankincense, Dhup and Salai guggul. The Boswellia tree is large branching and grows in the hilly regions of India. It also grows to a height of about 12 feet.

frankincense resin from the boswellia serrata tree

Boswellia is a stimulant, but its use throughout time has been controversial. In ancient times, Pliny mentions it as an antidote to hemlock. In the 10th century, Avicenna recommended it for tumors, ulcers, vomiting, dysentery and fevers. It was widely used in Indian medicine as a treatment for arthritis, bursitis, respiratory diseases, and diarrhea. The Chinese used it for leprosy, but it is best known for its place in history as Frankincense a precious gift or offering given to kings. In the ancient Ayurvedic medical texts of India, the gummy exudate from Boswellia is grouped with other gum resins, which are referred to collectively as guggals. Historically, the guggals were recommended for a variety of conditions, including arthritis, diarrhea, dysentery, pulmonary disease, and ringworm.

    FRANKINCENSE ESSENTIAL OIL OVERVIEW

Frankincense essential oil is particularly popular during the Holiday season, in addition to its many uses in aromatherapy practice. Some of the more popular species available as an essential oil include the following:
    • BOSWELLIA CARTERII ESSENTIAL OIL: Boswellia carterii is considered the traditional frankincense species. Native to the Red Sea area of northwest Africa, Boswellia carteri is a small tree with white or pink flowers, and green, pinnate leaves. The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the gum resin. The gum resin naturally exudes from the tree bark when it is cut. Boswellia carteri essential oil is a base note oil with a deep, spicy, balsamic aroma. Although it is used in aromatherapy practice for skin care, respiratory problems, colds, flu, and anxiety, it has traditionally been used as incense for religious purposes. The reason for this use is that Frankincense has, among its physical properties, the ability to slow down and deepen the breath, which is very conducive to prayer and meditation.

    • BOSWELLIA SACRA ESSENTIAL OIL: Although some sources state that Boswellia sacra and Boswellia carterii are one and the same, a study published on the PubMed.gov website concluded that this was not so the case. Boswellia sacra is related to Boswellia carterii and they both belong to the Burseraceae plant family, consequently they share similar characteristics. Boswellia sacra is also a small tree but with yellow-white flowers. Boswellia sacra is indigenous to Oman, Yemen, and Somalia. The essential oil is distilled from the resin and it has a deep, slightly spicy, wood/resin aroma with hints of citrus. It is also a base note oil but, being so precious and rare, it is often reserved for sacred, perfume blends rather than therapeutic aromatherapy practice.

    • BOSWELLIA FREREANA ESSENTIAL OIL: Boswellia frereana also grows in Somalia. It is important to check the country of origin of the essential oil that you are buying, in addition to the botanical name, because of the relative close relationship between similar plant species such as frankincense. Boswellia frereana is nicknamed the king of all frankincense and it is known locally by several synonyms including those of Maydi or Dhidin. The essential oil is steam distilled from the resin and it has a fresh, woody-pine aroma with hints of citrus. Like the other types of frankincense essential oil, it is a base note essential oil and it is often used as a fixative in perfume blends. For aromatherapy practice, Boswellia frereana essential oil can be used for the same problems as Boswellia carteri essential oil.
SMOKE FILLED TEMPLES AND OFFERINGS TO THE GODS - BOSWELLIA THURIFERA / BOSWELLIA SERRATA / BOSWELLIA CARTERII

Frankincense - the very word conjures up images of ancient, smoke-filled temples and aromatic offerings to the gods. This legendary substance actually comes from an unspectacular scrubby tree that is native to Africa, India and Saudi Arabia. Frankincense and the oil produced from it has been known for its healing powers and its ability to improve communication with the creator in the Middle East for thousands of years before it was, according to Christian mythology, made a gift of to Christ by the Magi. There are over 52 references to it in the Christian book, the Bible. Egyptian records show a great many references to it including its use in cosmetics, perfumes and as an embalming agent. The Chinese used it as part of a treatment for leprosy. It is known as Boswellia carterii, Olibanum, Indian Frankincense, Arabic Frankincense, and Salai guggal.

Frankincense is obtained from the leafy forest tree - Boswellia Thurifera. The tree has deciduous leaves which alternate towards the tops of branches, unequally pinnated; leaflets in about ten pairs with an odd one opposite, oblong, obtuse, serrated, pubescent, sometimes alternate; petioles short. Flowers are white or pale rose on short pedicels in single axillary racemes shorter than the leaves. Calyx, small five-toothed, persistent; corolla with five obovate-oblong, very patent petals, acute at the base, inserted under the margin of the disk, acstivation slightly imbricative. Stamens, ten, inserted under the disk, alternately shorter; filaments subulate, persistent. Anthers, caducous, oblong. Torus a cupshaped disk, fleshy, larger than calyx, crenulated margin. Ovary, oblong, sessile. Style, one caducous, the length of the stamens; stigma capitate, three-lobed. Fruit capsular, three-angled three-celled, three-valved, septicidal, valves hard. Seeds, solitary in each cell surrounded by a broad membranaceous wing. Cotyledons intricately folded multifid.

The Boswellia Thurifera trees are grown predominantly on the Somali coast and parts of the Arabian Peninsula. The coast of Southern Arabia is yearly visited by parties of Somalis, who pay the Arabs for the privilege of collecting Frankincense, and in the interior of the country, about the plain of Dhofar, during the southwest Monsoon, Frankincense and other gums are gathered by the Bedouins. The trees on the Somali coast grow, without soil, out of polished marble rocks, to which they are attached by a thick oval mass of substances resembling a mixture of lime and mortar. The young trees furnish the most valuable gum, the older yielding merely a clear, glutinous fluid, resembling coral varnish.

To obtain the Frankincense, a deep, longitudinal (lengthwise) incision is made in the trunk of the tree and below it a narrow strip of bark 5 inches in length is peeled off allowing the sap to run out as an oozing resin. When the milk-like juice (sap) which exudes has hardened by exposure to the air, the incision is deepened. In about three months the resin has attained the required degree of consistency, hardening into yellowish 'tears.' The large, clear globules are scraped off into baskets and the inferior quality that has run down the tree is collected separately. The tears are distilled to yield an oil that is both fragrant and medicinal. The season for gathering Frankincense tears lasts from May until the middle of September, when the first shower of rain puts a close to the gathering for that year.

    CONSTITUENTS & THERAPEUTIC EFFECT

The venerable herbalist Mrs. Grieve noted that the constituents of frankincense as follows: Resins (65 percent), volatile oil (6 percent), water soluble gum (20 percent), bassorin (6 to 8 percent), and plant residue (2 to 4 percent). The resins contain boswellic acid and alibanoresin. The primary healing components of Frankincense oil are pinene, dipentene, and phellandrene; all are responsible for the oil's anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antidepressant properties. In addition, Frankincense oil is cytophylactic - meaning it can stimulate new cell growth and help prevent wrinkles. This may account for its long-standing use to heal wounds and scars and to counter the effects of aging. Frankincense is an effective remedy for colds, bronchitis, sinus congestion, asthma, cystitis, aging skin, anxiety, stress, and broken hearts.

    PARTS USED

Dried resin, collected from stems and trunk.

    TYPICAL PREPARATIONS

Powdered resin is added to water, prepared as a tincture, and very rarely as a tea. For internal use, sometimes mixed with myrrh or cress. In aromatherapy, Frankincense is compatible with bergamot, cinnamon, clary sage, geranium, grapefruit, jasmine, lavender, lemon, myrrh, neroli, orange, patchouli, pine, rose, sandalwood, tangerine, and ylang ylang. In Ayurvedic medicine, Frankincense is combined with turmeric to make teas, tinctures, or encapsulations for treating arthritis and muscle pain. When used as a massage oil, or in a warm bath or diffuser, Frankincense is a fine remedy for colds, bronchitis, asthma, and skin wounds.

Frankincense is traditionally used to treat coughs. Modern research confirms that it contains phytochemicals that stop the production of leukotrienes that cause constricted airways and inflammation. Frankincense is often described as a stimulant, but its action are only similar to those of stimulants in relieving the symptoms of asthma, bronchitis, colds, and flu. It is currently being researched and used therapeutically in hospitals in Europe.

Once an ingredient in ancient Egyptian cosmetics, Frankincense is still prescribed to rejuvenate and restore dry, wrinkled skin and to promote the healing of scars. The oil is said to notably affect emotion and mood as well. Used for many centuries as an incense to create a spirit of peace and contemplation, Frankincense has a uniquely warm and rich fragrance. Aromatherapists today recommend the oil for times of stress and anxiety. Frankincense oil is also said to calm and focus a restless soul, alleviate mental fatigue and mend a broken heart.

Boswellin is a standardized Ayurvedic extract containing 65-percent Boswellia (boswellic acids), the active constituents of the herb Boswellia serrata, combined with antioxidant-rich extract of Curcumin. The Boswellia helps reduce joint pain and swelling, while the Curcumin helps protect joint cells from additional damage from free radicals. The combination of boswellia and curcumin has been safely used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years, and modern research supports the effectiveness of this herbal extract. The active ingredients in Boswellin are boswellic acids. Numerous studies have shown that boswellic acids support healthy joint function by inhibiting leukotrienes. Leukotrienes are compounds produced in the body during an interaction between oxygen and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). By inhibiting the production of leukotrienes, Boswellin may help to support mobility and ease of movement. Studies have also shown that Boswellin may improve blood flow and support healthy connective tissue. The addition of turmeric / curcumin to the formula helps create an antioxidant-rich joint formula that no only supports joint movement, but also exerts neuroprotective activity and helps maintain a healthy cardiovascular system. Essential Oils

Kalyx: Frankincense Essential Oil (In Jojoba Oil), Aura Cacia, 1/2 fl oz: K
Kalyx: Frankincense Essential Oil, 100% Pure, Aura Cacia, 1/2 fl oz: K
Various species of frankincense trees grow wild throughout Western India, Northeastern Africa and Southern Saudi Arabia. The oil is distilled from the gum resin that oozes from incisions made in the bark of the trees. The oil is spicy, balsamic, green-lemon-like and peppery. It modifies the sweetness of citrus oils such as orange and bergamot. It is also the base for incense type perfumes and is important in Oriental, floral, spice and masculine scents. Aromatherapy benefits: calming, visualizing, meditative. Essential, absolute and resin oils are volatile, fragrant materials extracted from the root, bark, wood, seed, fruit, leaf or flower of a single plant. The plants used to produce these oils are grown on certified organic fields and are third-party certified by Quality Assurance International; no synthetic chemicals are used in growing or processing them. Steam distillation and cold pressing are used to extract the essential oil from the plant. Essential oils and absolutes are very potent and should always be used sparingly and in conjunction with a reliable reference. Essential oils contain the odor, taste and medicinal properties of the plant itself, but in very concentrated form, with no base oil, alcohol, water or dilutants added.

One whiff of our fragrance and you would gladly pay the few cents more per stick for the highest quality incense in the world - Blue Pearl. In fact, in the incense world, our reputation is unbeatable. Blue Pearl incenses have all been chosen because of their ability to induce the meta-emotions of consciousness.... joy, insight, inner vision, pure love, and an expanded sense of being. Whether one is sitting for formal meditation, or just washing the dishes, these feelings are available, and Blue Pearl incense is there to help you remember. Blue Pearl has been developed for the mastery of the aromatherapy of consciousness. With your eyes shut or eyes wide open, while sitting quietly or doing you daily chores, experience Blue Pearl. Rise above it all, be in the world but not of it, merge with the energy hiding in the empty spaces of all matter. The smoke curling upward from incense is a metaphor for the transformation of matter and physicality into the ethereal, of the expansion of consciousness. Blue Pearl, chosen with the real you in mind.
