    BOLDO HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Boldo (Peumus boldus) is also known as Boldus, Boldea fragrans, Boldine, Boldoak Boldea, Boldo Folium, Boldus Boldus, Peumus fragrans.

Boldo is an evergreen native to Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru. Archaeologists excavating in the Monte Verde region of southern Chile have found Boldo in combination with 22 other herbs wrapped in a seaweed basket estimated to be 12,500 years old. Chilean legend has it that Boldo was discovered by a shepherd who believed his sheep were healthier and had fewer liver problems when they grazed on native Boldo plants in his fields.

    Boldo Flowers

For hundreds of years, the Chilean people have used it for liver, bowel, and gallbladder problems. In Chilean folk medicine, Boldo is used as an anthelmitic for treating worms. Indigenous tribes in parts of Peru use the leaves for liver diseases, gallstones, and for use as a diuretic. The fruit has been used as a spice, the wood a charcoal, and the bark for tanning hides. Boldo has abortive, anodyne, anthelmitic, antiifungal, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, carminative, cholagogue, choleretic, cytotoxic, demulcent, depurative, detoxifier, diuretic, hepatic, hepatotonic, hepatoprotective, laxative, sedative, stimulant, stomachic, teratogenic, tonic, and vermifuge properties.

  • The essential oil is used in the perfume industry.
  • It is also an ingredient in liqueurs and bitters.

  • MEDICINAL USES

Today, Boldo is still used to treat liver, gallbladder, hepatitis, constipation, flatulence, poor digestion, gallstones, and poor appetite. It is also used for treating insomnia, rheumatism, cystitis, colds, earaches, gout, jaundice, dyspepsia, and is used as an overall tonic. In homeopathic medicine it is used to treat digestive disorders, constipation, and liver problems. The leaves have been used for the treatment of intestinal worms. Other parts of South America use Boldo for treating gonorrhea and syphilis. American herbalists prescribe this plant to activate the secretion of saliva, bile flow, and liver activity, but also for many of the conditions mentioned.

Boldo Leaf also known as Peumus boldus, Boldea fragrans, Boldine, Boldoak Boldea, Boldo Folium, Boldus, Boldus Boldus, Peumus fragrans. Boldo is an evergreen shrub most commonly found in Chile, but also occurring in other parts of South America including Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru. The plant has since become naturalized outside its native range, with small populations in Europe and Africa. The waxy leaves are highly aromatic to the point of being unpleasantly pungent when crushed. The boldo plant produces small green fruits that are sweet with a pleasant taste. Archaeologists excavating in the Monte Verde region of southern Chile have found boldo in combination with 22 other herbs wrapped in a seaweed basket estimated to be 12,500 years old. Boldo contains alkaloids (boldine) and flavonoids, as well as ascaridole, camphor, cineole, linalool, limonene, b-pinene, rhamnetin, isorhamnetin, kaempferol, resin, and tannins.

Boldo is a famed herb in the Andes mountains of Chile and Peru. It is considered a strong bitter tonic and has become known as a digestive tonic for gastrointestinal disorders, a hepatoprotective herb adapted itself to many cleansing tonics digestive and liver formulas. Frequently used as a tea, we have adapted the full spectrum extractives of boldo to mimic the liquid extracts used in various studies. Boldine, the main alkaloid of P. boldus, appears to be implicated in this hepatoprotective activity. The recent demonstration that boldine is an effective antioxidant in both biological and non-biological systems has opened up the perspective of a broad range of uses in medicine and industry. An attractive, drought-resistant shrub from the coastal Andes of Chile and Peru. The round leaves are very fragrant and have a long history for use as a natural botanical. Boldo is related to cinnamon and Bay trees, but employed for its principle bitter oils and alkaloids. Boldine has antioxidants which are captured by our full spectrum extraction process.
