    BLUE FLAG HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Blue Flag (Iris veriscolor) is also known as Blue Iris, Flag Lily, Fleur-de-luce, Iris, Liver Lily, Poison Flag, Snake Lily, Water Flag, Wild Iris, Fleur-de-lis, Dragon Lily, Dagger Flower, Dragon Flower, Water Iris and Larger Blue Flag..

Blue flag is a perennial herb native to North America, and cultivated elsewhere in the world. Blue flag root comes from a wildflower (actually a species of iris) known to the scientific community as iris versicolor. This attractive flowering herb is native to the sedge meadows, marshlands and riverbanks of North America, and is an official symbol of the Canadian province of Quebec. Iris versicolor is indeed a natural herb in the technical sense: it has no woody stem, grows above ground and dies back at the end of each growing season. However, the useful part is the blue flag root.

It grows in shallow water, at the edge of ponds, marshes and swamps and is similar in appearance to other wild iris, and is sometimes mistaken for them. Blue Flag is predominate throughout much of the West. It looks like the common iris, smooth spear-shaped leaves and a light lavender or bluish-purple flower, but is smaller in size than the garden varieties. This flower has been known as the liver lily because of its dried and powdered rhizome was used as a remedy for impurities of the blood and diseases of the liver. Early American Indians regarded this herb as a virtual panacea and they used the flowers and leaves in a poultice for treating sores and bruises.

This flower increases urination and bile production and acts as a mild laxative. Due to its cleansing properties, this herb works well in treating acne and eczema, especially when associated with gallbladder problems or constipation. In folk medicine Blue Flag is used as a treatment for skin diseases, rheumatism, and syphilis.

    BLUE FLAG DOSAGE INFORMATION

Blue Flag comes in various forms and can be an ingredient in other products.

Blue Flag constituents are iridin, volatile oils, salicylic and isophthalic acids, gum, resin, tannin and sterols. Dried root (rhizome) is the part used, fresh root for poultices. Typical preparations incude use in teas, extracts and rarely capsules. Used primarily for poultices.

It is thought to have stimulating effects on the lymphatic system, helping the body to rid itself of toxins, and may be useful for its laxative and diuretic properties as well. Blue Flag Extract is prepared from the fresh (undried) rhizome and roots of Iris versicolor plants which are gathered in their natural wild habitat. To assure optimal extraction of Blue Flag's bioactive compounds, the rhizome (with roots) is hand-harvested in late autumn or early spring and is then taken directly to preparation. It is extracted while stillfresh and succulent in a fresh herb / menstruum - 1:2 ratio in an organic grain alcohol for 6 to 8 weeks.

  • For using a decoction, take 1 to 2 teaspoonfuls of the dried herb in 1 cup of water. Drink 3 times a day.
  • In using a tincture, take 2 to 4 ml, 3 times a day.
  • For extract, take 5 to 16 drops, 1 to 3 times per day in a cup of water. Do not take drops undiluted.

  • For other formulations, read and follow product label directions.

BLUE FLAG HERBAL & IRIS VERSICOLOR HERBAL PRODUCTS

Once officially listed in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia, blue flag has been used medicinally for centuries to detoxify the body and treat sluggish liver action. Because of this traditional belief in its blood cleansing abilities, it was given the nick name "Liver-Lily". Russian herbalists believed that it was good for chronic skin problems like acne, eczema, and even it could be used as a freckle remover. Taken internally as a tea, it is a strong laxative, diuretic and emetic. Dried root is milder than fresh root, and it is recommended that dried root be used for infusions and teas. Applied topically, it may reduce inflammation, relieve pain and inhibit infection in bruised, swollen or injured joints. Eclectic physicians of the 19th century used it as a non-specific immune enhancer.

The flavonoids of orris root are known to possess anti-inflammatory activity explaining the herb?s traditional use as a remedy for sore throats and colds. Orris root is mildly diuretic; it was traditionally used to treat "dropsy" or congestive heart failure. Orris root that is stored in powdered form is more useful as a diuretic, while orris root that is stored in a chopped form is more useful as an anti-inflammatory. The iris is a group of plants known for their beautiful blooms and their adaptability to an astonishing variety of growing conditions, from the temperate reaches of Oregon to the marshes of Louisiana and even the desert American Southwest. In ancient times the iris was a symbol of power and majesty used as the original scepter. The orris is a group of two species of European iris, cultivated in the region near Florence and sold as "ghiaggiuolo." The rhizomes, resembling ginger, are dug up in August, stripped of their rootlets and bark, and then dried until they have a chalky appearance. Dried orris root smells like violets. It is used primarily as a base for natural toothpastes, and as a fixative in perfumes to enhance other aromas. Powdered orris root lends a pleasant scent to freshly laundered linens and to potpourri. It also can be used as a snuff to relieve sinus headache and as a stabilizer in cosmetics. Orris root is extremely "puckery" if chewed fresh. It must be dried to be palatable. Drying also concentrates its aromatic essential oils. Also known as: Iris germanica, Iris pallida. (Iris florentina is a variety of Iris germanica.) Purple Flag, Bearded Iris, Fleur-de-lis, and Garden Iris.
