    BLUE COHOSH HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Blue Cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) is also known as Caulophyllum, Beechdrops, Blue Ginseng, Papoose Root, Squaw Root, or Yellow Ginseng. Not to be confused with black cohosh, an unrelated plant.

Blue Cohosh is a woodland plant in the same family as barberry, goldenseal, and Oregon grape root, native to the eastern United States and Canada. The word cohosh is from Algonquian and means rough, which refers to the root. The stem is bluish, which is where the rest of the name comes from.

    blue cohosh roots

Blue Cohosh is a perennial herb that is purple when young, and bluish green with yellow flowers and dark fruit when mature. The root of the plant, harvested in the fall is the part that is used medicinally and has a bittersweet flavor. The wild plant is so bitter that grazing animals will not even eat it. It is one of the oldest indigenous American plant drugs and was primarily used by Native American women a few weeks before childbirth to make the birth process swift and easy. They also used it to ease menstrual cramps and for treating inflammation of the uterus. The root was used for treating rheumatism, colic, bronchitis, dropsy, sore throat, hiccoughs, epilepsy, and hysterics. Blue Cohosh has antispasmodic, emmenagogue (menstrual flow stimulant), parturifacient (induces labor), diuretic, diaphoretic and expectorant properties. The plant also acts as a relaxant and tonic to the nervous system.

Other Native American uses include a root infusion lung problems and fever.

Today Blue Cohosh is used to regulate the menstrual flow and for treating suppressed menstruation. This herb eases muscle spasms and stimulates uterine contractions for childbirth and has been used in folk medicine to prevent miscarriage. Blue Cohosh is an excellent uterine tonic that may be used in any situation where there is weakness or loss of tone.

    OTHER MEDICINAL USES

  • This herb also reduces the inflammation of arthritis and rheumatism.
  • European researchers have identified some antibiotic and immune-stimulating properties.
  • It may have a potential in treating bladder and kidney infections.

  • HOMEOPATHIC USES

Blue Cohosh is also used in Homeopathy. The homeopathic remedy made from Blue Cohosh is called Caulophyllum and is recommended for menstrual cramps, PMS, dysmenorrhea and support during childbirth.
