    BLUEBERRY HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) is also known as Northern Highbush Blueberry, Eastern North America Blueberry, Yellow Ginseng and Blue Ginseng. The related Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus)) is the European Blueberry and is also known as Airelle, Bilberry Fruit, Bilberry Leaf, Black Whortles, Bleaberry, Blueberry, Burren Myrtle, Dwarf Bilberry, Dyeberry, Huckleberry, Hurtleberry, Myrtilli Fructus, Trackleberry, Whortleberry, Wineberry and Blackhearts. Both have similar qualities and are often used interchangeably.

    BLUEBERRY

Northern Highbush Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) is a species of blueberry native to Eastern North America. It is a deciduous shrub that is often found in dense thickets. The leaves are dark green and glossy. The flowers are white and bell shaped. Centuries ago, Native Americans used Blueberry tea as an antispasmodic for cramps, hiccups, colic, cholera morbus (severe gastroenteritis), epilepsy and hysterics.

    BILBERRY

Also known as "Black Hearts" according to Thomas Hardy in his 1878 novel The Return of the Native, the European bilberry bush (Vaccinium myrtillus)) is a close relative of American blueberries, cranberries, and huckleberries. It flourishes in damp acidic soil throughout temperate and sub artic regions of the world. The bilberry has a long history of medicinal use. The English used it as a dye for wool due to its wonderful dark blue/purple coloring.

Many species of Vaccinium have a long history of use for medicinal purposes. All parts of the plant have been used with the fruit being favored in Europe, while the leaves, stems and bark are more widely used by Native Americans. Native American women used Blueberries to ease childbirth during labor and also used the tea. They ate the berries to treat scurvy, diarrhea, dropsy, and bilious fevers. Chippewa Indians dried the berries and placed them on hot stones and inhaled the fumes to drive out madness. Blueberries are a wonderful source of vitamin C, iron, and dietary fiber. Blueberries also contain carbohydrates, which help prevent coliform (harmful) bacteria from adhering to the walls of the bladder and urethra, in the same way as cranberries. The attachment of harmful bacteria to organ walls is how an infection begins. Blueberry root has diuretic, astringent, and antispasmodic properties.

BLUEBERRY USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Blueberries has a laxative effect, but this fruit also cleanses the blood, and improves circulation and visual acuity. It is possible they may also protect against cataracts and glaucoma. Preliminary studies have shown Blueberries to be effective in the treatment of varicose veins, hemorrhoids, and peptic ulcers. This fruit is also used to reduce fever and hot agues (fit of shivering). The leaves of this fruit are used to help regulate blood sugar in borderline diabetes and hypoglycemia. There is some evidence to suggest that Blueberries can help relieve symptoms of multiple sclerosis.

Here are some of the helpful areas that Blueberries can assist in; this information comes from the US Highbush Blueberry Council:

  • Antioxidants: Antioxidants help neutralize harmful by products of metabolism called "free radicals" that can lead to cancer and other age related diseases. Anthocyanin (the pigment that makes blueberries blue) is thought to be responsible.

  • Anti-Aging: Neuroscientists have done research on the antioxidants and found that Blueberries are very helpful with our aging process.

  • Disease Prevention: This fruit is thought to reduce the build up of "bad" cholesterol that contributes to cardiovascular disease and stroke. The scientists at the University of California at Davis did this research. Antioxidants were also thought to be the main component.

  • Urinary Tract Infections: Blueberries appear to work by preventing bacteria from attaching to the cells that line the walls of the urinary tract. The researchers at Rutgers University in New Jersey Have identified the compound that helps with this.

  • Eyesight: There have been a number of studies in Europe that have documented the relationship with Blueberries and Eyesight. This is thought to occur because the Anthocyanin in the blue pigment helps ease eye fatigue.

  • Based on data from the USDA Human nutrition Research Center on Aging (Boston, MA), blueberries are among the fruits with highest antioxidant activity. Using a test called ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), researchers have shown that a serving of fresh Blueberries provides more antioxidant activity than many other fresh fruits and vegetables.

    BLUEBERRY DOSAGE INFORMATION

After the successful use of bilberry jam in World War II, researchers determined that bilberry fruit and bilberry leaf contain biologically active substances called anthocyanosides. To receive the most nutritional value from Blueberry, it is best to eat it raw, but this fruit does come in other formulations as well and is an ingredient in many products. For best results, read and follow product label directions.

Blueberry Constituents are benzoic acid, caffeic acid, epicatechin, Epigallocatechin (EPCG), gallic acid, hydroquinone, isoquercetin, and quercetin. Parts used are the fruit and leaf. Typical preparations include dried fruit, jam, as a tea, encapsulated, liqueurs, wines, and desserts.

BLUEBERRY SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS INFORMATION

There are no know safety issues or interactions associated with Blueberry.

Bilberry fruit is known to be safe even for pregnant women, although eating too much can cause minor stomach upset. Maximum dosages of bilberry leaf have not been established for nursing mothers, young children, or people with severe liver or kidney disease, but there are no reports of toxicity. A bilberry leaf may lower blood sugars in diabetics. The leaf is not recommended for long term use.

Blueberry is also known as Vaccinium spp, American Blueberry, Vaccinium myrtillus, European blueberry, Airelle, Bilberry Fruit, Bilberry Leaf, Black Whortles, Bleaberry, Blueberry, Burren Myrtle, Dwarf Bilberry, Dyeberry, Huckleberry, Hurtleberry, Myrtilli Fructus, Trackleberry, Whortleberry, Wineberry. The two most active constituents found in Blueberries are anthocyanins and pterostilbene. Blueberry anthocyanins are considered one of nature's most potent antioxidants. Pterostilbene is the other Blueberry constituent that helps maintain healthy lipid and glucose levels that are already within healthy ranges. Through its unique biological effects and antioxidative potential, pterostilbene helps maintain healthy DNA structure.Scientists have discovered mechanisms to explain how blueberries can improve memory and restore healthy neuronal function to aged brains.

The European bilberry bush (Vaccubium myrtillus) is a close relative of American blueberries, cranberries, and huckleberries. It flourishes in damp acidic soil throughout temperate and sub artic regions of the world. The bilberry has a long history of medicinal use. Bilberry, the European relative of the American blueberry, is an herb that is a strong antioxidant that keeps capillary walls strong and flexible. It also helps to maintain the flexibility of the walls of red blood cells and allows them to pass through the capillaries better. It contains anthocyanidins, phytochemicals that help to lower blood pressure, inhibit clot formation, and enhance blood supply to the nervous system. Studies indicate that anthocyanidins can provide up to 50 times the antioxidant protection of vitamin E and 10 times the protection of vitamin C. In addition, this herb supports and strengthens collagen structures, inhibits the growth of bacteria, acts as an anti-inflammatory, and has anti-aging and anti-carcinogenic affects. The English used it as a dye for wool due to its wonderful dark blue/purple coloring. After the successful use of bilberry jam in World War II, researchers determined that bilberry fruit and bilberry leaf contain biologically active substances called anthocyanosides.
