    BLADDERWRACK HERBAL DESCRIPTION

    NUTRIENT FROM THE SEA

Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) is also known as Alga Noruega o Nudosa, Algue Laminaire, Ascophylle Noueuse, Ascophyllum nodosum, Atlantic Kelp, Black Tang, Black Tany, Bladder Fucus, Bladder Wrack, Blasentang, Chene Marin, Cutweed, Cut Weed, Dyers Fucus, Fucus, Fucus Vesiculeux, Fucus vesiculosis, Goemon, Kelp, Kelpware, Kelp-Ware, Knotted Wrack, Laitue de Mer, Laitue Marine, Laminaire, Marine Oak, Meereiche, Norwegian Seaweed, Quercus Marina, Red Fucus, Rockweed, Rockwrack, Rock Wrack, Schweintang, Sea Kelp, Sea Oak, Seawrack, Tang, Varech, and Varech Vesiculeux.

Bladderwrack is a brown seaweed harvested from cool ocean waters around world, easily recognized by its air-filled thalli or "bladders" that keep the plant afloat. People use the whole plant to make medicine. Bladderwrack is used for many conditions, but there has not been enough scientific research to determine effectiveness. A common food in Japan, it is used as an additive and flavoring in various food products in Europe. Bladderwrack is commonly found as a component of kelp tablets or powders used as nutritional supplements. It is sometimes loosely called kelp, but that term technically refers to a different seaweed.

Fucus vesiculosus, known by the common name bladder wrack or bladderwrack, is a seaweed found on the coasts of the North Sea, the western Baltic Sea, and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It was the original source of iodine, discovered in 1811, and was used extensively to treat goiter, a swelling of the thyroid gland related to iodine deficiency. The fronds of Fucus vesiculosus have a prominent midrib and almost spherical air bladders which are usually paired but may be absent in young plants. The margin is smooth and the frond is dichotomously branched. It is sometimes confused with Fucus spiralis with which it hybridizes. Primary chemical constituents of this organism include mucilage, algin, mannitol, beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, iodine, bromine, potassium, volatile oils, and many other minerals. Some people may suffer an allergic reaction to the iodine in bladder wrack.

BLADDERWRACK USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

    THYROID DISORDERS & WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Bladderwrack is a form of kelp that has been used medicinally for centuries. The main use of the herb has been for the stimulation of the thyroid gland as a treatment for obesity and cellulite.

The high iodine content of the herb stimulates thyroid function which boosts metabolism. Bladderwrack, like many sea plants, contains varying amounts of iodine, which is used to prevent or treat some thyroid disorders. Bladderwrack contains high concentrations of iodine, and for this reason it has been recommended as a treatment for hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland). Iodine will only help for the type of hypothyroidism caused by iodine deficiency, which is a relatively rare condition in the developed world. If your iodine levels are not low, taking extra amounts of iodine can cause your thyroid gland to become either over- or underactive, causing hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, respectively. Furthermore, the amount of iodine supplied by bladderwrack is unpredictable. Bladderwrack products may contain varying amounts of iodine, which makes it an inconsistent source of iodine when precised dosages are required. However, Bladderwrack is still used for a natural remedy for thyroid disorders including underactive thyroid (myxedema), over-sized thyroid gland (goiter), and iodine deficiency. Fucus also appears to assist in the problem of lipid balance associated with obesity, and where obesity is associated with thyroid dysfunction, this herb may help to reduce excess weight. Nourishing and soothing, it stimulates the thyroid gland, and acts as an anti-hypothyroid, thyroactive, anti-obesic, antirheumatic, demulcent, gentle metabolic stimulant, nutritive, adaptagen, thyroid tonic, and anti-inflammatory.

It has a reputation in the relief of rheumatism and rheumatoid arthritis and may be used both internally and as an external application for inflamed joints. The main phytotherapeutic use of Fucus is during debility and convalescence, and also to remineralize the body.

As nourishing tonic, it may be used for obesity with tiredness and dry skin, cellulite, chronic dry skin and stubborn constipation. Bladderwrack also contains algin, which can act as a laxative to help the stool pass through the bowels. A component of bladderwrack called alginic acid swells upon contact with water. When taken orally, it forms a type of seal at the top of the stomach, and for this reason is used in over-the-counter preparations for heartburn. It is the same constituent that gives bladderwrack its laxative properties.

Regular use delays the progress of arthritis and hardening of the arteries. A good tonic for old age. For children with slow mental and physical development. It is also used for obesity, arthritis, joint pain, "hardening of the arteries" (arteriosclerosis), digestive disorders, heartburn, "blood cleansing," constipation, bronchitis, emphysema, urinary tract disorders, and anxiety. Other uses include boosting the immune system, strengthening immunity and increasing energy. Some people also apply bladderwrack to the skin for skin diseases, burns, aging skin, and insect bites.

Bladderwrack is not only rich in iodine, but also contains calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, sulfur, silicon and iron and high in some B-complex vitamins. It contains moderate amounts of phosphorus, selenium, manganese and zinc and small amounts of vitamins A, C, E and G. It also contains anti-sterility vitamin S as well as vitamin K. It is rich in algin and mannitol, carotene and zeaxantin with traces of bromine.

    BLADDERWRACK DOSAGE INFORMATION

    DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS

    Constituents: Alginic acid, iodine.
    Parts Used: Entire plant.

Bladderwrack may be added to soups and stocks, taken as tablets, as an extract, or drunk as a tea 2 to 3 times a day. Because of the high iodine content bladderwrack should be used according to the directions and anyone with thyroid problems should consult their health care provider. Usual recommendations for dietary supplementation starts with 1 to 2 capsules per day.

The appropriate dose of bladderwrack depends on several factors such as the user's age, health, and several other conditions. At this time there is not enough scientific information to determine an appropriate range of doses for bladderwrack. Keep in mind that natural products are not always necessarily safe and dosages can be important. Be sure to follow relevant directions on product labels and consult your health care provider before using.

It is important not to take bladderwrack in dosages providing more than the recommended daily intake of iodine. Products that provide bladderwrack should state the amount of iodine they provide. If this information is not there, do not take it. Avoid in overactive thyroid conditions such as hyperthyroidism or cardiac problems and/or during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Not recommended for children under 5.

BLADDERWRACK SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS INFORMATION

    SAFETY CONCERNS

Do not use on a daily basis for more than 2 weeks at a time, taking a 2 week break before using again. This will prevent you from overdosing iodine with potential imbalance in thyroid function.

The alginic acid in bladderwrack creates a feeling of fullness that helps you eat less, but also interferes with the absorption of iron. For periodic use only and not to be taken for extended periods of time. Bladderwrack contains significant amounts of iodine, which could cause an allergic reaction in sensitive people.

Bladderwrack is possibly unsafe as it may contain high concentrations of iodine, which could cause or worsen some thyroid problems. Thyroid problems are known as hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone), or hypothyroidism (too little thyroid hormone). Prolonged, high intake of dietary iodine is linked with goiter and increased risk of thyroid cancer. Studies have found that levels of iodine vary widely among bladderwrack products. Because of this, if you use bladderwrack as a regular supplement, there is a real risk you may receive an overdose of iodine and develop hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.

Treatment of thyroid problems should not be attempted without medical supervision. Like other sea plants, bladderwrack can concentrate toxic heavy metals, such as arsenic, from the surrounding seawater in which it lives. One report suggests that use of a bladderwrack product with a high heavy metal content is responsible for a case of kidney failure. Heavy metals present particular risks for pregnant or nursing women, children, individuals with kidney disease, or anyone using bladderwrack in high doses or over a long period of time. If using any type of kelp supplements, try to use reliable sources from safe waters.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not use Bladderwrack. Preliminary research suggests that taking bladderwrack might make it harder for infertility problems and women to get pregnant.

Bladderwrack might slow blood clotting. There is a concern that it might cause extra bleeding during and after surgery. Stop taking bladderwrack at least 2 weeks before surgery.

Bladderwrack and other seaweed preparations can also worsen acne and decrease iron absorption.

    MEDICATION INTERACTIONS

Moderate - Be cautious with this combination.

  • Medications for an overactive thyroid (Antithyroid drugs). Bladderwrack can contain significant amounts of iodine. Iodine can affect the thyroid. Taking iodine along with medications for an overactive thyroid might decrease the thyroid too much. Do not take bladderwrack if you are taking medications for an overactive thyroid. Some of these medications include methenamine mandelate (Methimazole), methimazole (Tapazole), potassium iodide (Thyro-Block), and others.

  • Medications that slow blood clotting (Anticoagulant / Antiplatelet drugs). Bladderwrack might slow blood clotting. Taking bladderwrack along with medications that also slow clotting might increase the chances of bruising and bleeding. Some medications that slow blood clotting include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

  • HERBAL & SUPPLEMENT INTERACTIONS

  • Herbs and supplements that might slow blood clotting. Bladderwrack might slow blood clotting. Taking bladderwrack along with herbs that also slow clotting might increase the chances of bruising and bleeding. These herbs include angelica, clove, dan shen, fenugreek, feverfew, garlic, ginger, ginkgo, Panax ginseng, poplar, red clover, turmeric, and others.

    FOOD INTERACTIOS

There are no known interactions with foods.

    NORI SEAWEED

Nori, also known as Porphyra umbilicalis, Porphyria spp, Nori Seaweed, adn Pacific Seaweed in the Plant Family Bangiaceae. Nori is perhaps best known here in the U.S. as a wrap for sushi, but it has a long history of use in traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Porphyra is a red seaweed that grows off the coast of Japan, where seaweed has always been an important food source. Like most seaweeds, Nori is very high in mineral content which accounts for up to 40% of its dry mass. The most important of these micronutrients is iodine. A very small portion of Nori provides well over the adult recommended daily intake of iodine, which is vital for proper thyroid functioning. Nori is also rich in carotenes, vitamin C and vitamin B-12, which is seldom found in land plants. At 28% protein, Nori has more protein than sunflower seeds and wheat germ, both promoted as good sources of protein for those who eat no animal products. Its nutty, sweet-salty flavor makes it a popular addition to soups and salads. Nori constituents include sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, chlorine, sulfur and phosphorus; the micronutrients include iodine, iron, zinc, copper, selenium, molybdenum, fluoride, manganese, boron, nickel and cobalt. The whole plant and leaves are used. Typical preparations include dried, flaked, and pressed sheets applied to foods, soups and teas. Like most seaweeds, Nori is high in important minerals and nutrients, particularly iodine. Much of the beneficial effect comes from its diuretic effect and from the high mineral and iodine content. Do not use on a daily basis for more than 2 weeks at a time, taking a 2 week break before using again. This will prevent you from overdosing iodine with potential imbalance in thyroid function. Nori is for periodic use only and not to be taken for extended periods of time. Not to be used while pregnant. Use caution if suffering from hyperthyroidism.
