    BLACK PEPPER HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Black Pepper (Piper nigrum), a spice, is also known as Piperaceae, Blanc Poivre, Kosho, Krishna, Maricha, Pepe, Pepper, Pepper Extract, Pepper Plant, Peppercorn, Pfeffer, Pimenta, Pimienta, Piper, Piperine, Poivre, Poivre Noir, Vellaja, Green Peppercorns, and White Pepper. Do not confuse with Red Pepper (Cayenne) and Capsaicinoids.

    THE PEPPERCORN

Piper Nigrum, or black pepper as we best know it, has played an important role throughout history. While Attila the Hun held Rome hostage, he demanded 3,000 pounds of the Peppercorn as a tribute to his power, and during medieval times, it was traded ounce for ounce with gold. Black pepper has been cultivated for thousands of years on the Malabar coast of southwestern India, in the region defined by the modern state of Kerala. For much of the last two thousands years, black pepper was a luxury for the very rich, a commodity so valuable that it was even used as money. Nowadays black pepper is common around world and used in the cuisine of almost every nation.

    black pepper plants

Piper nigrum plants thrive best in shady, forested locations. This climbing woody vine uses trees and other supports to grow to about twenty feet high, but is normally kept to about 12 feet for commercial purposes and has a lifespan of about twenty years. Black Pepper is native to Asia and the plant is originally from India, Malaysia, Madagascar, China and Indonesia. The word pepper is derived from the Latin word piper, which in turn is taken from the Sanskrit word pippali.

Black Pepper has been used since the times of the Ancient Romans and Greeks. Even the Turks levied a tax on pepper, while the French, Portuguese and Dutch often went to war in the middle ages to fight for this lucrative trade from the Far East. Peppercorns are the fruit of Piper nigrum, an evergreen climbing vine. Black, white, and green peppercorns all come from the same plant, but they are harvested at different times and handled in different ways. To make black pepper, the clusters are plucked shortly before they ripen and are left in piles to ferment. After a few days, the berries are spread out on a mat and left to dry in the sun for two or three more days where they shrivel and blacken.

Black pepper contains about 3-percent essential oil. The aroma is due to the 80-percent content of monoterpenes: sabinene, beta-pinene, limonene, furthermore terpinene, alpha-pinene, myrcene, delta-3-carene and monoterpene derivatives (borneol, carvone, carvacrol, 1,8-cineol, linalool). Sesquiterpenes make up about 20-percent of the essential oil: beta-caryophyllene, humulene, beta-bisabolone and caryophyllene ketone.

    black pepper - peppercorn plants

Medicinally, this spice has been used to stimulate the appetite as well as provide relief from nausea. In India it has been used for a variety of conditions ranging from toothache to paralysis, and in East Africa it is thought that body odor produced after eating large amounts of this spice repels mosquitoes. Piper Nigrum has anthelmintic, antipyretic, anti-periodic, carminative, expectorant, and stimulant properties. White and green pepper is the same as black pepper; however, it is white and green depending on when it is picked off the vine, and depending on which method was used for drying. White pepper has stimulant properties as well, but it can cause circulatory congestion.

    PIPERINE

Black Pepper is a source of Piperine, a molecule that does not do much on its own but can inhibit enzyme that would attack other molecules. Through its active component Piperine, Black Pepper is able to modify supplement and drug metabolism. It is ingested alongside some supplements to increase their absorption rates and is almost always consumed with Curcumin, an active ingredient in Turmeric and is also found in limited amounts in the herb Ginger.

    PIPERINE ENTEROHEPATIC EFFECTS

Piperine is known for changing metabolism of various drugs and supplements, most notably increasing curcumin bioavailability by 2000-percent. It affects metabolism by both intestinal absorption as well as downregulating or inhibiting phase II detoxification enzymes and the glucuronidation process in the liver. It may also contribute to increase absorption by slowing intestinal transit rate and thus prolonging the time said compounds are exposed to the potential uptake.

    PIPERINE GASTRIC & SYSTEMIC EFFECTS

Piperine is able to slow both gastric emptying and intestinal transit at doses of 1 mg/kg to 1.3 mg/kg bodyweight. In higher doses, it can induce gastric acid secretion possibly via agonism of gastric histamine H2 receptors.

A process in the liver called glucuronidation, which attaches a molecule called glucuronide, to drugs to signal for their urinary excretion, is inhibited with Piperine. This process prevents excessive levels of drugs and supplements in the body, but sometimes inhibits all uptake and renders some supplements useless. When Piperine is ingested, excretion of supplements is hindered and certain drugs and supplements can bypass this regulatory stage, although not all are subject to it. This is good in some cases, as Piperine is required to give Curcumin to the extremities rather than it getting consumed by glucuronidation in the liver. In other cases, it can lead to elevated levels of certain drugs in the blood. Elevated could be good or bad depending on context, regardless, however, cautions should be taken when using Piperine.

Piperine inhibits drug detoxifying enzymes. This typically increases bioavailability of any compound which would normally be attacked by said enzymes. This can be good (ie. curcumin, EGCG) or it can be bad by stopping a protective measure against toxic xenobiotics. Piperine goes well with (synergistically) Curcumin and Green Tea Catechins. Synergistic in this sense means that the inhibition of glucuronidation results in an effect which is typically seen as favorable.
Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory molecule with anti-cancer properties, and similar to Fish Oil, it seems to be a metabolic syndrome band-aid. It has poor bioavailability and Black Pepper greatly enhances absorption.

Green Tea Catechins are four molecules, high amounts of which are present in Green Tea and other sources. The most potent one is EGCG. It is effective in respect to most claims and potent in a few. Any fat burning benefits are dependent on being caffeine naive.

If using any drugs or pharmaceuticals, check with your health care provider before supplementing anything with Piperine in it in high quantities. Piperine may act as an antagonism and may not go well with some drugs. Antagonism in this sense means that the inhibition of glucuronidation results in an effect which is typically seen as detrimental.

    BLACK PEPPER ESSENTIAL OIL

Black Pepper Oil is mostly made in Singapore, India and Malaysia. Its dried berries, known as peppercorns, have multiple uses; in the past, they were of notable value as an aromatic spice and were much sought after as a trading commodity. Black Pepper Oil is obtained from the berries and features a mildly pungent scent. The strong and sharp spicy smell of the oil is faintly reminiscent of Clove Oil, yet more refined. It can range in color from light amber to yellow-green and has a watery viscosity. The oil is made from the unripe red fruit of the plant, while white pepper for household use, is made from the same fruit, but the berry is picked when fully ripe and the outside layer (pericarp) is removed before drying. The unripe, sun-dried peppercorns (fruit) are used for the extraction of the oil. Up to a half a ton of peppercorns must be processed, by steam distillation, to produce 1 quart of Black Pepper Oil (a yield of nearly 2-percent).

The warm and spicy essential oil is useful for warming the body and promoting circulation as well as for alleviating sore muscle and joint pain and tension. When used as a bath or massage oil, it provides relief from chronic rheumatic ailments. Black Pepper Oil boosts the immune system and also strengthens the entire digestive tract and alleviates bloating and colic by regulating activity in the large intestine while inducing a mild laxative effect. It stimulates the kidneys and disperse bruising by increasing circulation to the skin. The oil's intense aroma invigorates the whole body and mind and is effective for people who feel listless.

    BLACK PEPPER DOSAGE INFORMATION

Black Pepper (Piper Nigrum) is a common spice and herb used historically for various diseases related to gastrointesinal disorder and dental or oral dysfunction. It is most commonly known in the supplemental realm for its piperine content, but also contains pellitorine, guineensine, pipnoohine, trichostachine, and piperonal.

Piper Nigrum comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For best results, read and follow product label directions.

Parts Used: The dried whole berries, ground and essential oil.
Typical Preparations: Traditionally added to food. Can be taken in capsule form. Essential oils may be used in aromatherapy or added to medicinal and cosmetic products.

The usage of Black Pepper extract for the purpose of enhancing the absorption of other supplements that are glucuronidated (for example, Curcumin) tends to call for 20 mg of the bioactive Piperidine.

BLACK PEPPER SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS INFORMATION

Piper Nigrum is generally regarded as safe for human consumption as it has been long used as a spice.

Pepper can cause digestive inflammation. It can be an irritant if used too frequently or too much. Avoid excessive use of black pepper (more than 1 teaspoon per day) if you take prescription digoxin (Lanoxin) or phenytoin (Dilantin). Too much pepper may slow the rate at which the liver clears these medications from the bloodstream. If you are taking other medications or supplements, it is best to seek the advice of your healthcare professional before using this spice as a treatment for your condition.

There exist preliminary evidence that Black Pepper as a food substance poses carcinogenic effects via some procarcinogenic constituents such as safrole and tannins, and some terpene compounds. These procarcinogenic effects were noted with topical application. These effects, however, were not noted with oral ingestion despite rodent hypersensitivity to Piperine.

    KALYX PRODUCTS

Kalyx: Black Pepper, Medium Grind, Certified Organic, Simply Organic Frontier Brand, 0.56 oz: K
Throughout medieval Europe, pepper was commonly traded, ounce for ounce, for gold. This irreplaceable spice has long been recognized as an ingredient for stimulating the appetite. Peppercorns can be, depending on their processing, either black, white, green and red. That is, the same plant produces all four types, depending on the time of harvest and the method of processing. Black pepper is harvested nearly ripe and dried at a moderate temperature. White pepper is harvested fully ripe, so that the outer hull can be easily removed, usually by soaking. This produces an equally strong, but less flavorful pepper. Green pepper is harvested unripe, and then either pickled in salt or vinegar, or quick-dried. This produces a less pungent, more herbal flavor. Red pepper is harvested ripe, and then pickled in salt or vinegar. This produces a very pungent, aromatic and tasty pepper that, since the pickling stopped the natural fermentation, still retains some of the more herbal flavor of the green variety. This is probably the most widely used spice in the world.

Kalyx: Peppermill 4 Pepper Blend, Certified Organic (Piper nigrum; Hu Jiao), Frontier Spices, 1 lb: K
A colorful blend for grinding fresh in your peppermill. 'Black pepper' is harvested nearly ripe and dried at a moderate temprature. 'White pepper' is harvested fully ripe, so that the outer hull can be easily removed, usually by soaking. This produces an equally strong, but less flavorful pepper. 'Green pepper' is harvested unripe, and then either pickled in salt or vinegar, or quick-dried. This produces a less pungent, more herbal flavor. 'Red pepper' is harvested ripe, and then pickled in salt or vinegar. This produces a very pungent, aromatic and tasty pepper that, since the pickling stopped the natural fermentation, still retains some of the more herbal flavor of the green variety. This is probably the most widely used spice in the world.
