BLACK CUMIN (BLACK SEED) USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

    INFLAMMATION & INFECTION

Historically, Black Seed has been used for headache, toothache, nasal congestion, and intestinal worms. It has also been used for "pink eye" (conjunctivitis), pockets of infection (abscesses), and parasites.

Today, Black Seed is used for treating digestive tract conditions including gas, colic, diarrhea, dysentery, constipation, and hemorrhoids. It is also used for respiratory conditions including asthma, allergies, cough, bronchitis, emphysema, flu, swine flu, and congestion. Other uses include lowering blood pressure, lowering cholesterol levels, treating cancer, and boosting the immune system. You may read that a patent has been issued to cover the use of black seed to improve immunity. Women use black seed for birth control, to start menstruation, and to increase milk flow. Black seed is sometimes used in combination with Cysteine, Vitamin E, and Saffron to ease the side effects of a chemotherapy drug called cisplatin.

Black Cumin (Black Seed) is excellent for use in external healing for skin care such as psoriasis, eczema, dry skin, joints and scalp massage. Some people apply Black Seed directly to the skin for joint pain (rheumatism), headache, and certain skin conditions. Internally, it can be used to treat asthma, arthritis, and it boosts the immune system.

Scientific studies have shown that Black Seed oil helps reduce inflammation and eliminates fungi infections. The extract form has shown to be effective in regulating blood sugar levels, and stimulating bone marrow and immune cells. Further studies are being conducted on Black Seed for its overall effectiveness in treating and preventing cancer. There is some scientific evidence to suggest that Black Seed might help boost the immune system, fight cancer, prevent pregnancy, and lessen allergic reactions by acting as an antihistamine. Research suggests that taking Black Seed extract by mouth improves coughing, wheezing, and lung function in people with asthma.

Early research suggests that taking a specific product containing Black Seed oil, Vitamin E, Beta-Carotene, and Biotin (Immerfit by Phyt-Immun) by mouth daily might improve allergy symptoms in people with hay fever (allergic rhinitis). Using this formula might improve symptoms in people with itchy and inflamed skin.

Early research suggests that taking Black Seed extract by mouth every eight hours for 4 weeks might reduce the number of seizures in children with epilepsy.

Research evidence regarding the effectiveness of Black Seed for high cholesterol is conflicting. Some early research suggests that taking whole crushed Black Seed 1 gram twice daily before meals for 4 weeks reduces cholesterol, "bad" low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and blood fats called triglycerides in people with high cholesterol. However, other research shows that taking powdered Black Seed 1 gram twice daily for 6 weeks does not improve cholesterol. Early research suggests that taking Black Seed extract twice daily for 8 weeks might slightly improve blood pressure in some people.

Early research suggests that taking a specific Black Seed oil product twice daily for 6 weeks might reduce total cholesterol, "bad" low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and blood sugar levels in people with metabolic syndrome.

Relieving symptoms related to narcotic drug withdrawal (opiate withdrawal). Early research suggests that taking Black Seed extract by mouth three times daily for 12 days might reduce symptoms of opiate withdrawal.

Sore throat and swollen tonsils (tonsillopharyngitis). Early research suggests that taking a combination of Chanca Piedra and Black Seed by mouth for 7 days relieves pain in people with sore throat and swollen tonsils.

In foods, Black Cumin (Black Seed) is used as a flavoring or spice.

    BLACK CUMIN (BLACK SEED) OIL

Black Cumin oil or also known as Black Seed oil, is a remarkable and highly prized nutritive oil that can be used in conjunction with your regular dietary regimen. Because of the unique cell structure of this oil, along with its high vitamin, mineral and essential fatty acid content, it is being employed for numerous ailments and deficiencies. Black cumin oil is being deeply scrutinized by the scientific community, and the findings are very substantial and truth telling. Best if kept stored in a temperature controlled environment. Refrigeration is not necessary but recommended to help increase stability.

Black Cumin Seed Oil helps support the health of the immune system. Black Cumin was discovered in Tutankhamen's tomb, implying that it played an important role in ancient Egyptian practices. Although its exact role in Egyptian culture is not known, we do know that items entombed with a king were carefully selected to assist him in the afterlife.

The earliest written reference to black seed is found in the book of Isaiah in the Old Testament. Isaiah contrasts the reaping of black cumin with wheat: For the black cumin is not threshed with a threshing sledge, nor is a cart wheel rolled over the cumin, but the black cumin is beaten out with a stick, and the cumin with a rod. (Isaiah 28:25,27 NKJV). Easton's Bible Dictionary clarifies that the Hebrew word for black cumin, "ketsah," refers to "without doubt the Nigella sativa, a small annual of the order Ranunculaceae which grows wild in the Mediterranean countries and is cultivated in Egypt and Syria for its seed." Dioscoredes, a Greek physician of the 1st century, recorded that black seeds were taken to treat headaches, nasal congestion, toothache and intestinal worms. They were also used, he reported, as a diuretic to promote menstruation and increase milk production.

The Muslim scholar al-Biruni (973-1048), who composed a treatise on the early origins of Indian and Chinese drugs, mentions that the black seed is a kind of grain called alwanak in the Sigzi dialect. Later, this was confirmed by Suhar Bakht who explained it to be habb-i-Sajzi (viz. Sigzi grains). This reference to black seed as "grains" points to the seed's possible nutritional use during the tenth and eleventh centuries. In the Greco-Arab/Unani-Tibb system of medicine, which originated from Hippocrates, his contemporary Galen and Ibn Sina, black seed has been regarded as a valuable remedy in hepatic and digestive disorders and has been described as a stimulant in a variety of conditions, ascribed to an imbalance of cold humors.

Ibn Sina (980-1037), most famous for his volumes called "The Canon of Medicine," regarded by many as the most famous book in the history of medicine, East or West, refers to black seed as the seed "that stimulates the body's energy and helps recovery from fatigue or dispiritedness." Black seed is also included in the list of natural drugs of Al-Tibb al-N abawi, and according to tradition, "Hold onto the use of the black seed for in it is healing for all illnesses except death." This prophetic reference in describing black seed as "having a healing for all illnesses" is not exaggerated as it at first appears.

Recent research has provided evidence, which indicates that black seed contains an ability to significantly boost the human immune system - if taken over time. The prophetic phrase, "hold onto the use of the seed," also emphasizes consistent usage of the seed.

BLACK CUMIN (BLACK SEED) DOSAGE INFORMATION

Black cumin is an annual herbaceous plant with fine foliage and delicate pale bluish purple or white flowers. It is indigenous to the Mediterranean, but grows prolifically in many areas of the world. Black cumin seeds were found in the entombed with Tutankhamen for his journey into the afterlife. They were mentioned in the old testament of the bible, as well as by the prophet Mohammed.

Parts Used: The seeds are used in cooking and teas. The oil is used both cosmetically and medicinally.

Typical Preparations: The seeds can be used as a tea by themselves, or added to coffee or tea for an evocative flavoring. The seeds can also be used in all manners of cooking and baking, as well as pastas, casseroles, salads, and stir fry. Black Cumin comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For best results, read and follow product label directions.

Ayurvedic dose recommendations are 1 to 3 grams daily Black Cumin seeds. Black Seed oil should only be used in very small quantities of 2 to 5 ml only and is should not be used for cooking.

Keep in mind when using Black Cumin Seed, using more seed does not heal the person faster. If using whole seeds, they will need to be heated first. The seeds have a harsh taste and will burn the stomach if the seeds are not heat treated first. Place the seeds on low heat and stir them every few minutes. Taste the seeds to see when the flavor becomes very bland. After the tartness is removed, take the pan from the heat. Using a coffee grinder, grind what is needed. Place ground seed powder into vegetarian capsules.

In diabetes studies 2 grams of Nigella sativa seeds per day were used. Two grams of seeds is equal to 2 to 3 capsules of ground seeds. The seeds need to be heated and then ground. The heated and ground seeds were not mixed with any ingredient, such as honey. The seeds were taken in capsule form. It is always best to look for vegetarian or halal capsules, avoiding all pork residue type gelatin capsules. The oil of the Nigella sativa seed can be used if desired. The oil is 2.5 times stronger than the seed, so a minimal amount is needed. Look for only true Nigella sativa to be sure of its potent effect. The oil is not heated and must be taken on an empty stomach, unlike many companies currently recommend. If you are taking the oil, it is best to take the oil in capsule form or straight from the bottle, as honey is still a form of sugar. Nigella sativa can be taken in conjunction with prescribed diabetic medicine, but in order to be effective, you must follow a prescribed diabetic diet. Many people have had great success on a low carb diet or a vegan diet. Nigella sativa helps to regulate the blood and keep your levels at a normal range.

  • Thousands use Black Cumin (Black Seed) seeds and oil with success daily, but it is necessary to take the seed on a regular basis and then when the person comes down with illness, it is more easily remedied. To substitute the ground seed for the oil may do so at a ratio of two and one half teaspoons seeds to one teaspoon of the oil. The cure will not work unless the whole protocol is followed, such as preparing the seeds properly and taking the oil on an empty stomach. Be careful not to take a large amount of black seeds as it can be toxic in amounts exceeding 25 grams. Follow the recommended dosage and always use the best quality seeds you can find. The most expensive, does not mean the best seeds. Nor does the cheapest seeds mean they are the worse. Remember to take black seed everyday for well being and then if a disease strikes, a small amount of black seed will suffice.

For centuries, black seed oils ability to promote heart health has been one of the main uses of black seed oil and one of its most praised benefits. The rich and unsaturated Omega 6 & 9 acids as well as the phytosterols in black seed oil may help to reinforce elasticity in the blood vessel walls, thereby aiding in the prevention of blood clot formation and arterial pressure. It may also support healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels already in the normal range. Black seed oil is rich in antioxidants, beneficial acids and B-vitamins which support the immune health. Black seeds may help to balance the immune system- increasing immune function but not encouraging immune reactions against the body's healthy tissue. Black seed oil is also known to support respiratory health. By simply rubbing black seed oil on your chest or taking it orally it may help to clear up congestion and buildup. The anti-inflammatory effects of black seed oil may extend to improving overall respiratory health. Black seed oil is considered to be carminative, which means it aids in digestion and may help to decrease bloating, gas and stomach cramps. The oil may also be very beneficial with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) due to its antispasmodic effects on the smooth muscle of the intestine. This may aid in healthy weight management and clearer skin.
