    BLACK COHOSH HERBAL DESCRIPTION

    A PHYTOESTROGEN WOMAN'S HERB

Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) is also known as Bugbane, Bugbane Squawroot, Bugwort, Cimicifuga, Rattleroot, Rattleweed, Actaea Macrotys, Actaea Racemosa, Baneberry, Black Snakeroot, Phytoestrogen, Rattle Root, Rattle Snakeroot, Rattlesnake Root, Squawroot. Do not confuse with the potentially toxic Blue Cohosh.

Black cohosh is a graceful woodland plant bearing spikes of white flowers, native to New England and eastern Canada. Native Americans primarily used the herb for women's health. The name cohosh is from the Algonquian tribe, and means rough, referring to the feel of the rhizome. It was given the name "bugbane" because the flowers have such a strong odor, and have been used to effectively repel insects.

Black Cohosh is a native North American plant found on hillsides and in woods at higher elevations. Grown from Maine and Ontario to Wisconsin, Georgia and Missouri. This herb can grow up to nine feet tall. Black Cohosh grows from a gnarled black root, hence its name, it has a smooth stem and big multiple leaves with jagged edges. In summer, white flowers develop from what are called racemes. These flowers emit a stinky odor.

Black Cohosh is a tall perennial herb that Native Americans used for womenís health problems, arthritis, fatigue, and snakebite. The colonists rapidly adopted the herb for similar uses, and by the 19th century, Black Cohosh was widely used as a treatment for menstrual cramps. In the 1800ís Black Cohosh was used to treat scarlet fever, smallpox and whooping cough. In Europe it was used for womenís problems, arthritis, and high blood pressure. By the 1950s, doctors were using Black Cohosh as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy. Black Cohosh is a plant that produces effects similar to estrogen; however, there is no evidence that it works like estrogen. Black Cohosh has astringent, diuretic, sedative, alterative, anti-diarrheal, cough suppressant, and diaphoretic properties.

BLACK COHOSH USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

    A MENOPAUSAL RELIFE HERB

Germanyís Commission E recommends using Black Cohosh for treating menopause, dysmenorrhea, and PMS.

Clinical results show improvement in hot flashes, sweating, headache, vertigo, heart palpitations, tinnitus (a ringing or similar sensation in the ears), nervousness, irritability, sleep disturbance, anxiety, vaginal dryness, and depression. In a 1995 German trial, it was found that when combined with St. Johnís Wort, Black Cohosh was 78 percent effective in treating hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. As a treatment for menopause, medical studies reported Black Cohosh to be more effective than estrogen in relieving symptoms and in normalizing the appearance of vaginal cells under microscopic evaluation.

In a 1999 study at the New York College, it was found that Black Cohosh was shown to inhibit the growth of T-47D cells. The study concluded that this herb and others may be useful in preventing breast cancer.

In a 2002 German study, it was reported that Black Cohosh has antiestrogenic effects. It was previously thought to have estrogenic effects.

This herb is useful in treating inflammatory arthritis and rheumatism.

The sedative action in Black Cohosh is helpful in treating high blood pressure, whopping cough, and asthma.

BLACK COHOSH SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS INFORMATION

    SAFETY CONCERNS

Black Cohosh should not be taken for more than six months at a time.

Black Cohosh rarely has side effects other than occasional mild gastrointestinal distress. In menopausal women, black cohosh is not likely to cause any complications other than mild stomach upset.

Due to the potential hormonal activity, Black Cohosh is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women, or for adolescents. Black cohosh must be avoided during pregnancy because of its potential ability to stimulate uterine contractions. The safety of black cohosh in breastfeeding mothers and the degree of transmission of black cohosh in breast milk has not been established.

There is controversy regarding the safety of black cohosh in women with a personal history or strong family history of breast cancer. Women taking Black Cohosh should not take it together with birth control pills, HRT, such sedatives as diazepam or blood pressure medications.
