    BITTER ORANGE HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Bitter Orange (Citrus aurantium) is also known as Bigarade Orange, Neroli, and Sour Orange.

Bitter Orange is a flowering, fruit-bearing tree of the same family as orange and tangerine. Two different oils are produced from this tree. A 16th century Italian princess named Anna-Marie de Nerola reportedly discovered oil from its flowers to be quite fragrant, and used it to scent her gloves. Today the oil, called Neroli Oil, is prohibitively expensive. This oil has sedative qualities.

Petitgrain Oil is processed from the leaves and stems of the tree and is a digestive, intellectual stimulant, and sedative.

The distilled Flower Water of Bitter Orange is antispasmodic and sedative.

The fruit is rich in vitamin C, carotene, pectin, coumarins, and flavonoids. The flavonoids offer anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties. The fruit is also said to contain cirantin, which some believe acts as a contraceptive. In Chinese herbal medicine, the unripe fruit known as zhi shi is thought to "regulate the qi (life force or energy)."

It was also used to help ward off the plague. The Orange has antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, bactericidal, digestive, astringent, expectorant, fungicidal, sedative, and insecticide properties.

    BITTER ORANGE DOSAGE INFORMATION

The bitter orange is native to Africa, Arabia, and Syria. It was brought to the Mediterranean and southern Europe in 1200 C.E. by traders.

It is an evergreen tree with long spines and incredibly fragrant flowers. The membranes and pulp of the fruit, however, are very sour and bitter (hence the name). It is now widely cultivated in China, India, and the U.S. It is used as a flavoring agent in many foods, and for its fragrance in bath and body care products. The entire fruit, including the peel, fresh flowers, and the leaves and twigs, are all used for various commercial products.

Bitter orange peel, and the oil derived from it, is used in many different things. As a flavoring agent it can be used in a wide variety of foods, and is used in liqueurs (most notably Triple Sec), desserts, candies, gelatins and puddings. It is used to cover up the taste of pharmaceuticals, as well as being a key ingredient in marmalade. The peel is used in teas. Neroli and Petitgrain essential oils are both derived from the bitter orange tree, specifically from the fresh flowers (Neroli), and the leaves and twigs (Petitgrain).

Bitter Orange comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For best results, read and follow the product label directions. Photosensitization is possible in some individuals, but this has mainly been found in the whole raw fruit. It is not recommended during pregnancy, and it should not be used by children.

BITTER ORANGE SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS INFORMATION

There are no known safety issues or interactions associated with Bitter Orange when taken in the recommended doses.

However, frequent contact with Bitter Orange peel can cause skin irritation, including redness, swelling, and blisters. Heightened sensitivity to sunlight may occur in light-skinned individuals. Using Bitter Orange oil internally should be done so only under a health care provider's supervision. Not intended for use by young children. Safety in pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known.

About Phototoxic Effects: Orange essential oil may irritate skin and cause a phototoxic effect. This can lead to sunburn and cause brown pigment spots to form on the skin that may last for years. Avoid using orange (or any citrus oil) or skin care products that contain Orange oil whenever you are going to be exposed to the sun. Either cover the skin that has had Orange oil applied to it, wait at least 6 hours before going out in the sun or wash off any traces of Orange oil before spending any time in the sunlight or using a tanning bed (ultraviolet rays are the problem). In addition, the pale yellow pigment in the oil leaves spots (stains) on textiles that are difficult, if not impossible, to remove. Do not apply orange oil to clothing that you do not want stained.

ORANGE & BITTER ORANGE HERBAL PRODUCTS

Orange peel acts as anti-inflammatory due to the high flavonoid content, and as an anti-bacterial and anti-microbial agent. One of the major components of Orange Peel (d-limonene) has been reported to have anti-carcinogenic activities and further studies are being conducted. It is used in traditional Chinese Medicine to "reduce accumulation," whether gas in the intestine, pressure from cramping, stool in the bowels, phlegm in the lungs and throat, or "too much blood energy" resulting in high blood pressure. Precautions: Women who are pregnant should not take Orange peel and there have been a few cases where children developed intestinal colic. Large doses may cause photo-toxicity in some individuals.

Bitter orange peel has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties. The German E Commission has approved its use for loss of appetite, dyspeptic ailments and stomach complaints. There is some speculation and testimony that bitter orange peel can be used for weight loss and as a nasal decongestant, but according to the German Commission there still need to be clinical trials done before this can be emphatically established. Neroli and Petitgrain essential oils are both derived from the bitter orange tree, specifically from the fresh flowers (Neroli), and the leaves and twigs (Petitgrain). Precautions: Photosensitization is possible in some individuals, but this has mainly been found in the whole raw fruit. It is not recommended during pregnancy, and it should not be used by children.
