    BHUMY AMALAKI HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Bhumy Amalaki (Phyllanthus niruri) is a widespread tropical plant commonly found in coastal areas, best known by the common names Stonebreaker or Seed-under-leaf. Phyllanthus niruri is also known as Chanca Piedra (in Spanish), Bhumyamalaki or Bhumy Amalaki (in Ayurveda), and Quebra-Pedra (in Portuguese). It is a relative of the spurges, belonging to the Phyllanthus genus of Family Phyllanthaceae.

    NAME SIMILARITIES - DIFFERENT PLANTS

Some people think that Bhumi Amalaki is a kind of Amalaki (Indian gooseberry), which is a very famous medicinal fruit in Ayurveda. By the similarity of name, it is easy to think that Bhumi Amalaki is related to Amalaki, but this is not correct. Bhumi Amalaki is a completely different plant from Amalaki. Amalaki is a big tree (Emblica Officinalis / Phyllanthus emblica) and Bhumi Amalaki (Phyllanthus Amarus / Phyllanthus Niruri) is a small plant. The two species have very different properties too. The only reason that the names are similar is that Bhumi Amalaki has many tiny, mustard-seed-sized fruits on its stems which look exactly like the big Amalaki fruits that inspired the name. In Sanskrit the name, Bhumi Amalaki, is usually written in a combined form according to special sandhi rules (rules for combining syllables in Sanskrit). Instead of "Bhumi Amalaki" you will often see it written as "bhumyamalaki." The "ya" in the middle of the word is formed when the "i" at the end of "bhumi" combines with the "a" at the beginning of "amalaki." You will also see the words Amalaki and Amla used interchangeably. Amla is just a shorthand way of saying Amalaki. This applies to the names of both Ayurvedic plants: Amalaki and Bhumi Amalaki.

    P. NIRURI & P. AMARUS BOTANICAL NAMES

Bhumy Amalaki (Chanca Piedra) has been the subject of much research to determine the active constituents and their pharmacological activities beginning in the mid-1960's. Indian and Brazilian research groups were the first to conduct these studies since the plant was indigenous to their areas with a long history of use by its inhabitants. In some of the published research, scientists make little or no distinction between P. niruri and P. amarus because of the very similar phytochemical make up of both plants. In fact, some references are found in which scientists believe that it is one species of plant with two botanical names, but of course there are botanists who would argue this point. According to some practitioners, these are two different species of Bhumy Amalaki: Phyllanthus niruri (which spreads on the ground) and Phyllanthus amarus (which is taller). One family tradition of Ayurveda is very specific about using the smaller one (Phyllanthus niruri) because it is more effective and safer to use. They say that using anything that is working on the liver, you have to be very careful. If you detoxify too fast, it can give serious problems.

BHUMY AMALAKI USES, HEALTH BENEFITS, & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Bhumy Amalaki is the classic Ayurvedic herb for the liver. Bhumy Amalaki is very bitter in taste and has an action that is cooling, soothing and cleansing. With its special affinity for the liver, Bhumy Amalaki acts to cleanse, detoxify and strengthen this essential organ. It also supports proper function of the gall bladder and promotes healthy skin. An excellent herb for both pitta and kapha, Bhumy Amalaki is useful for those with constitutions that would benefit from its dry and light qualities.

  • Detoxifies and strengthens the liver.
    • Supports proper function of the liver.
    • Cleanses the gall bladder.
    • Promotes healthy skin.
    • Cools and soothes the digestive tract.

  • Ayurvedic Energetics.
    • Rasa (taste): Bitter, astringent, sweet.
    • \
    • Virya (action): Cooling.
    • Vipaka (post-digestive effect): Sweet.
    • Doshas (constitutions): Balancing for Pitta and Kapha, may increase Vata.

Bhumy Amalaki is also known as Jangli amla (Hindi), Bhumyamalaki (Sanskrit), Pittawaku (Sinhalese), Chanca Piedra (Spanish), and Quebra-Pedra (Portuguese). The botanical name of Bhumyamalaki is Phyllanthus amarus which is synonymous with Phyllanthus niruri. It is an important plant of Ayurvedic system of medicine which is used for problems of the stomach, genitourinary system, liver, kidney and spleen. The plant has also been used in Brazil and Peru as an herbal remedy fr kidney stones.

Bhumy Amalaki is employed for numerous conditions including blennorrhagia, colic, diabetes, dysentery, fever, flu, abnormal cell growths, jaundice, vaginitis, and dyspepsia. It is of little wonder that it is used for so many things since the plant has proven antihepatotoxic, antispasmodic, antiviral, antibacterial, diuretic, febrifugal and hypoglycemic activities. It is also considered anodyne, apertif, carminative, digestive, emmenagogue, laxative, stomachic, tonic and vermifuge based on its long documented history of uses.

Chanca Piedra is widely used in herbal medicine in South America, remaining the most popular remedy for gallstones and kidney stones throughout the continent. In Peruvian herbal medicine, it is also used for hepatitis, urinary infections, and as a diuretic.

In Brazilian herbal medicine it is called Quebra Pedra and is considered an excellent remedy to remove uric acid from the urine and to eliminate stones. It is also used in Brazil for hydropsy, urinary and bladder infections and blockages, liver ailments, painful joints, cystitis, prostate disorders, kidney disorders, hepatitis, diabetes and as a antispasmodic and muscle relaxant specific to the urinary tract system.

Chanca Piedra, indigenous to India where it is called Pitirishi or Budhatri, is a common household remedy for asthma, bronchitis and to cure coughing, extreme thirst, anemia, jaundice and tuberculosis. Also indigenous to the Bahamas where it is called hurricane weed or gale-wind grass. It is used in local herbal medicine there for poor appetite, constipation, typhoid fever, flu and colds.

A clinical study with Phyllanthus niruri, indicated that it may reduce the levels of urinary calcium. A subsequent study of 150 patients over a 6-month period indicated that an extract of this herb reduces the incidence of stone formation, and concluded, "Regular self-administration of P. niruri after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for renal stones results in an increased stone-free rate that appears statistically significant for lower caliceal location. Its efficacy and the absolute lack of side effects make this therapy suitable to improve overall outcomes after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for lower pole stones." A more recent rat study found that Phyllanthus niruri has been shown to interfere with many stages of stone formation, reducing crystals aggregation, modifying their structure and composition as well as altering the interaction of the crystals with tubular cells leading to reduced subsequent endocytosis.

Some research has been done on Bhumy Amalaki with positive results with hepatitis, including hepatitis C. However, be careful. These studies were all done using the crude herb in large doses. They also used phyllanthus amarus predominantly, which is more dangerous. You will see the side effects of this, with toxic effects reported for the kidneys.

Ayurveda understands why the studies are finding kidney toxicity. If large doses of Bhumy Amalaki are used, it can detoxify the liver so fast that the toxins released from the liver cannot be eliminated from the body in time. The toxins get reabsorbed into the bloodstream and filtered by the kidneys. Basically, the only thing that has been accomplished is a transfer of toxins from the liver to the kidneys - not a good thing if it damages the kidneys. For this reason, Bhumy Amalaki should not be used indiscriminately, or in large doses, especially if there is a high toxic load in the liver (and this is the case in 99-percent of people living in the modern world). It should also be combined with other herbs like Coriander (to help bind the toxins released by the liver) and Punarnava (to help strengthen the kidneys to handle the excess toxins passing through). It should always be used under the guidance of a Ayurveda practitioner.
