    BENZOIN RESIN HERBAL DESCRIPTION

    A TROPICAL TREE RESIN

Benzoin (Styrax benzoin) is also known as Benzoin Resin, Benzoin, Gum Benzoin, Benjamin, Benjamin Gum, Barley Gum, Styrax Gum, Friar's Balsam, and Spice Bush.

If you can remember visiting the family health practitioner 40 or more years ago, you may remember the ubiquitous jar of "Tincture of Benzoin" kept on an office shelf. The benzoin tree is native to the tropical reaches of Southeastern Asia, China, and Indonesia. The resin has a vanilla-like aroma and ranges in color from pale yellow to red brown and is harvested by making triangular incisions into the tree's bark to establish a flow, which then hardens into lumps when exposed to air and sunlight. Benzoin is used in the perfume industry as an antioxidant, stabilizer, and fixative. It will sometimes harden under fluctuations in humidity.

The Benzoin tree is native to the tropical areas of the Far East and produces a balsamic resin called Benzoin. Hacking the trunk of the tree with an axe will enable the liquid Benzoin to accumulate beneath the bark, or seep from the incision(s), which flows down and hardens into lumps. The resin, also called gum benzoin or benjamin, ranges in color from pale yellow to red brown.

Benzoin is an antiseptic, astringent and expectorant herb, with an almost camphor-cinnamon smell. Regarded as a sedative in Western aromatherapy and a stimulant in Chinese medicine. The Siam and Sumatra Benzoins are the types most widely used. The resin or gum is used for medicinal purposes as well as an aromatic in perfumes. Benzoin has antiseptic, expectorant, carminative, diuretic, stimulant, astringent, antioxidant, and preservative properties.

    Benzoin Oil

    BENZOIN RESIN OIL

Benzoin Oil is an extract from the thick sap of the Benzoin tree, or Styrax benzoin. Native to southeast Asia (Far East), Benzoin trees reach and imposing height of 120 feet and excrete a viscous balsamic resin (called Benzoin) when the trunk of the tree is hacked with an axe. This enables the liquid Benzoin to accumulate beneath the bark, or seep from the incision(s), which flows down and hardens into lumps. The resin, also called gum benzoin or benjamin, ranges in color from pale yellow to red brown. Since Benzoin resin is so gummy, it must be dissolved in alcohol or chemical solvents, such as benzene or hexane, before it can be used. Benzoin is an antiseptci, astringent and expectorant herb, with an almost camphor-cinnamon smell. Regarded as a sedative in Western aromathrapy and a stimulant in Chinese medicine.

The Siam and Sumatra Benzoins are the types most widely used. Benzoin Oil has long been used in incense to drive away evil spirits and by Ayurvedic health care practitioners to alleviate skin ailments, ringworm and shingles. In addition, Benzoin Oil was added to lotions to maintain supple skin, and to potpourris, sachets and soaps for a warm, vanilla-like scent. Applied as a chest balm or inhaled in steam, Benzoin Oil is used today to help relieve respiratory infections, such as asthma, bronchitis and colds. It is also effective in boosting physical strength and energy, which can be helpful during convalescence. Benzoin Oil eases sore joints and muscles, aids digestion and relieves nervous tension, as well. The resin or gum is used for medicinal purposes as well as an aromatic in perfumes.

BENZOIN USES, HEALTH BENEFITS, & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE FOR

    THERAPEUTIC EFFECT

The most important constituents in Benzoin are benzoic acid, benzyl benzoate, benzyl alcohol, vanillin, coniferyl benzoate and cinnamic acid. These compounds give the oil its antiseptic, antidepressant, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, astringent and antibacterial properties.

Benzoin Oil is effective for coughs, head colds with congestion, asthma, cracked skin, dermatitis, muscle and joint pain, headaches, depression, poor concentration, tension and nervousness.

Benzoin tincture, when diluted with water, works well on dry, cracked, and chapped skin. It also works well as an expectorant for respiratory congestion and severe bronchitis. Placing the tincture in a vaporizer is useful for treating croup and laryngitis. When Benzoin is taken internally, it acts as a carminative and is rapidly absorbed. It also helps relieve coughs and nervous tension. It has a positive effect on the respiratory system and helps to expel fluid wastes from the lungs, while calming the digestion and balancing blood sugar. Benzoin essential oil clears the sinuses and breaks up congestion. Benzoin is also added to cosmetics to prevent fats from turning rancid. In cosmetics and perfumery, it is used as an anti-oxidant and fixative in cosmetics and perfumes. Using it in aromatherapy will lift the spirits and ward off depression and the feeling of loneliness, while adding calm.
