Autumn Crocus (Colchicum autumnale) is also known as Fall Crocus, Meadow Saffron, Mysteria, Wonder Bulb, and Naked Ladies.

Autumn Crocus is a member of the Lily family, and even though it is sometimes called meadow saffron, it is not saffron, and should not be used in place of saffron in cooking. Due to its toxicity, Autumn Crocus can be fatal. The toxicity of this plant has been known since the times of ancient Greece when Greek slaves ate the plant to make themselves violently ill, or to commit suicide. During the 5th century, herbalists in the Byzantine Empire, discovered its usefulness in treating rheumatism and arthritis. Ancient Arabs used it to treat gout. The active ingredient in Autumn Crocus is colchicine, an alkaloid, with anticancer properties. The corm (stem) and seeds are analgesic, anti-rheumatic, cathartic, and emetic.

Today the most significant use of Autumn Crocus is in the treatment of gout.

It is also used in treating the symptoms of rheumatism and leukemia. Autumn Crocus has been used with moderate success in treating Bechetís syndrome, a chronic disease with recurring ulcers and leukemia. The chemical alkaloid colchicine is being studied experimentally as a cancer treatment, as it prevents cell division, especially in the nervous system.

Due to the extremely toxic nature of Autumn Crocus, it is best to consult with your health care practitioner regarding the use of conventional herbal preparations of this plant for the treatment of your condition. Homeopathic preparations undergo a series of dilutions from the mother tincture and are a much safer treatment for health issues.

Homeopathic preparations of Autumn Crocus are called Colchicum Autumnale. Colchicum is a remedy indicated for horrible nausea that is worse from the sight and smell of food (especially cooking food, eggs or fish) often indicates this remedy. The woman retches and vomits even at the thought of food, and has a sore and bloated feeling in the abdomen. Her nausea is also worse from even the slightest movement. She has trouble eating anything, although she often craves things, when she tries to eat them they make her sick. She is likely to feel ill from many smells that others do not even notice.

Autumn Crocus is highly poisonous and resembles arsenic poisoning. Do not use as a food preparation or as a conventional herbal preparations. Use only homeopathic preparations. See Homeopathic Potencies for more information.

The symptoms include burning in the mouth and throat, diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting, and kidney failure. Respiratory failure and death often follows. Less than two grams of the seeds can kill a child. Under no circumstances should pregnant or nursing women use Autumn Crocus.

Bloom time is September to October. Color is purplish-pink. Hardiness zone 5 to10. Plant grows to about 6 to 12 inches in height with plant spacing 3 to 6 inches. They require sunlight and average moist soil. This plant is called 'Autumn Crocus' because it looks just like a crocus and it blooms in autumn. It gets the nick name 'Naked Lady' because its flower spikes appear when there are no leaves on the plant. Colchicum Autumnale is the most cold hardy of all the Autumn Crocuses. This European native has huge 5 to 7 by 2 to 3-inch wide flowers that are very eye-catching! The plant will develop corms that can be divided every few years. These corms have several medicinal uses including treatments for gout and caner, but all parts of the plant and seeds can be poisonous, so do not experiment on you own. This species is considered an endangered plant in many countries worldwide. Help mother nature by planting these as bedding plants, in borders, or naturalized in meadows, fields, and lawns. They are deer resistant. (Seller Description)
