    ARNICA DESCRIPTION

    ANTI-INFLAMMATORY HERB

Arnica (Arnica Montana) is also known as Leopard's Bane, Common Arnica, Mountain Arnica, Mountain Daisy, Mountain Tobacco, Arnica chamissonis, and Wolfsbane. Leopard's Bane and Wolfsbane are two names that it shares with the entirely separate genus Acontium, but Arnica should not be confused with this Aconite genus.

Arnica is a graceful perennial woodland plant in the same family as the sunflower (Compositae or Asteraceae), native to Asia, Central Europe and the western United States. Arnica Montana is native to the temperate regions of Western North America, while two are native to Eurasia (Arnica Angustifolia and Arnica Montana). Several species, such as Arnica Montana and Arnica Chamissonis, contain helenalin, a sesquiterpene lactone that is a major ingredient in anti-inflammatory preparations (used mostly for bruises).

The plants are usually between 6 inches and 2 feet in height. They have a deep-rooted, erect stem, that is unbranched. Their downy, opposite leaves are borne towards the apex of the stem. The ovoid, leathery, cluster of basal leaves are arranged in a rosette at the base of the stem. The yellow (or orangish) flowers resemble those of the daisy. The flower is about 6 to 8 centimeters wide with 10 to 15 long ray florets and numerous disc florets. The phyllaries (a bract under the flowerhead) has long spreading hairs. Each phyllary is associated with a ray floret. The flowers have a slight aromatic smell. Its yellow flowers are collected at summer's end and dried for medicinal use. The seedlike fruit has a pappus of plumose, white or pale tan bristles. The entire plant has a strong and distinct pine-sage odor when the leaves of mature plants are rubbed or bruised. There are about 30 species and Arnica Montana is the species used for medicinal purposes. Arnica plants are suited for garden borders and rock gardens. Arnica species are used as food plants by the larvae o some Lepidoptera species including Bucculatrix arnicella.

    ARNICAL HISTORY

Arnica has a history of folk medicine use in many locations, including North America, Germany, and Russian. The herb has been used in folk remedies since the sixteenth century. Arnica is an aromatic plant, native to Alpine slopes in mountainous regions around the world. It has golden yellow flowers that are daisy-like in appearance and are dried to be used in medicinal preparations to relieve the pain of spains and bruises. This plant was discovered as a European folk remedy by shepherds who pastured their sheep in the mountains. When the sheep fell and bruised themselves they nibbled on the leaves of the plant and were said to heal quickly from their fall. Arnica grows in rocky and mountainous areas where people and animals are most likely to fall and bruise themselves. In the North American colonies it was used as a paint for chilblains when the skin was broken. Arnica has anti-inflammatory properties. A North American indigenous tribe, the Cataulsa, prepared a tea from Arnica roots to ease back pains. The German writer Goethe credited arnica with saving his life by bringing down a persistent high fever. Arnica preparations are used extensively in Russia. Folk use there includes external treatment of wounds, black eye, sprains, and contusions.

    CONSTITUENTS

According to The Complete German Commission E Monographs, Arnica contains sesquiterpene lactones of the helenanolid type, predominantly ester derivatives of helenalin and 11,13-dihydrohelenalin. Additionally, the herb contains flavonoids (e.g., isoquercitrin, luteolin-7-glucoside, and astragalin), volatile oil (with thymol and its derivatives), phenol carbonic acid (chlorogenic acid, cynarin, caffeic acid), and coumarins (umbelliferone, scopoletin).

ARNICA USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIIC EVIDENCE

    MEDICINAL USES

The species of Arnica Montana is native to Europe and has long been used medicinally for centuries. It is used in liniment and ointment preparations for strains, sprains and bruising. Today Arnica Montana is used primarily to relieve the aftereffects of falls, blows, sports injuries and overexertion. The herb is known by some as, "tumbler's cure all," reflecting this common medicinal use. Homeopathic and naturopathic practitioners use it for severe sprains and wounds and shock.

Commercial Arnica preparations are frequently used by professional athletes. Athletes, coaches, and trainers use it to treat a variety of sports injuries. Arnica relieves pain, swelling and stiffness, and heals bruises caused by physical trauma.

Arnica also works well for treating rheumatic joints, osteoarthritis, swollen feet, leg ulcers, or herpes sores. Arnica is also used on irritated nasal passages and lips. This herb increases resistance to infection, including listeria and salmonella, and is used for reducing fevers, stimulating circulation, and reabsorbing internal bleeding.

A compress of Arnica tea can be placed on the stomach to relieve abdominal pains. The Arnica Oil when used externally is extremely beneficial for: acne, bruises, hair loss if rubbed on scalp, inflammation from insect bites, muscle aches, rheumatic pain, sprains, strained or pulled muscles, superficial phlebitis, tendon strain, swelling due to fractures and wound healing if not on broken skin. When an Arnica compress is applied to an injury, including broken bones, it can have some amazing healing results.

Arnica is used today in Modern Medicine. There are surgeons who use Arnica after surgery to help the patient. Arnica helps to lower the bruising and aches that happens after surgery. Arnica has been used by Plastic Surgeons for some time and is now being used by other surgeons as well. According to The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, clinical trials suggest benefits of Arnica for osteoarthritis and reduction in postoperative swelling and pain.

    COMMON USES OF ARNICA

One of the most common uses of Arnica is the treatment of wounds, bruises, sunburn and other forms of skin irritation or inflammation. In these cases, an Arnica-based gel, cream, ointment, or salve is topically applied to promote healing and soothing of the skin. Arnica gel is also touted as a means of relieving muscle soreness and sprain-related pain. In homeopathic medicine, Arnica is used in treatment of these and other conditions:
    • Arthritis
    • Backache
    • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
    • Eczema
    • Fibromyalgia
    • Influenza
    • Headache
    • Hemorrhoids
    • Migraine

Several studies have found Arnica to be no more effective than a placebo in relieving pain, swelling, and bruising, Still, other research suggests that Arnica may be useful in treating the following health problems:

    1) Arthritis: In a 2002 study of 79 adults with mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee, researchers observed a significant decrease in pain and stiffness (as well as an improvement in function) among those who used Arnica gel twice daily for six weeks. Another study, published in 2007 and involving 204 people with osteoarthritis of the hand, showed that Arnica gel lessened pain and improved hand function as effectively as ibuprofen.

    2) Post-Surgery Swelling: Taking a homeopathic dilution of Arnica may slightly reduce postoperative swelling, according to a 2006 study of 227 adults undergoing arthroscopy.

    3) Post-Surgery Pain: In a 2007 study of 190 adults having their tonsils removed, scientists discovered that those taking a homeopathic dilution of Arnica had a small but significant decrease in pain compared to patients assigned to a placebo. A 2002 study of 37 people undergoing surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome found that taking a homeopathic dilution of Arnica and applying Arnica ointment also produced a significant decrease in post-surgery pain.

    4) Muscle Soreness: Taking a homeopathic dilution of Arnica may help ease muscle soreness, according to a 2003 study of 82 marathon runners. However, an earlier study of 519 runners found that homeopathic Arnica was ineffective for muscle soreness following long-distance running.

    ARNICA DOSAGE INFORMATION

    SUPPLEMENTS

Arnica can come in various forms and is an ingredient in other products.

This plant is seldom used internally because of its irritant effect on the stomach, but when taken internally it promotes healing of damaged tissues and helps control bleeding. For external use, apply Arnica to affected area immediately after over-exercising or recovering a minor injury to ward off pain, stiffness, and bruising. When combined with Calendula, this herb works well for treating skin rashes and other inflammatory skin problems. Repeated applications may produce severe inflammation so it is best to use only when necessary. If your skin becomes inflamed, discontinue until inflammation is gone.

Parts Used: Fresh or dried flowers. The root is also used in European herbal preparations.

Typical Preparations: Used as an infusion (approximately 1 teaspoon dried herb in 1/2 cup water), tincture (approximately 1 part herb to 10 parts alcohol), oil (1 part dried herb in 5 parts plant oil), or mouth rinse (1 part tincture in 10 parts water), or ointment (1 part arnica oil to 4 or 5 parts base). Only homeopathic preparations of arnica are recommended for internal use.

    ARNICA SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS

    SAFETY CONCERNS

Arnica is generally regarded as safe when taken in the recommended doses.

It can have an irritating effect when taken internally. Exceeding the recommended dosage of Arnica can be toxic. If you are taking any medications (prescription or over-the-counter), it is best to consult with your health care provider before using this herb for the treatment of your condition. Do not use if you are pregnant or nursing. For treating children, it is best to consult with a health care provider for the proper dosage.

Arnica should not be taken internally, except in the form of a homeopathic dilution. Arnica contains the toxin helenalin, which can be poisonous if large amounts of the plant are eaten, and contact with the plant can also cause skin irritation. If enough material is ingested, the toxin Helenalin produces severe gastroenteritis, and internal bleeding of the digestive tract. Homeopathic preparations of Arnica 24X dilution or more are not toxic as negligible amounts of Arnica remains.

Precautions: Not for internal use. Do not swallow any form of Arnica except homeopathics. In some cases, topical use of Arnica can cause skin irritation, itching, blisters, and other allergy-related problems. Be careful not to use Arnica on broken skin. Repeated application to the skin can cause irritation. Not recommended while pregnant or nursing.

Arnica is used for soreness in the small of the back, lame back, general weakness of the muscles of the back, with soreness prevailing, sickening backache in the region of the kidneys, are all benefited by arnica. It not only relieves the soreness and the bruised conditions, when given internally, but quickly overcomes the ecchymosis. As an external application, to cuts, bruises, lacerations, and sores, arnica has long been a popular domestic remedy. It is used in full strength, but the best results are not so attained. It is more serviceable when diluted with from one to six parts of warm water. It is a stimulant to the skin, promoting absorption of nutritive material. It undoubtedly assists in carrying off the broken down tissue, which results from the traumatism, and promotes rapid repair. In cases where the muscles beneath the skin were severely lacerated, torn and bruised, an application of one part of arnica with five parts of warm fresh sweet milk, keeping the application warm, covered with a protective dressing, and renewed every two or three hours. It is incredible how rapidly the restoration will take place. Use 6 to 12 drops in juice, water, under the tongue or as desired. May be taken 3 times daily. Shake well. Store in cool dark place. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use on open wounds. About 30 dropperfuls per fl oz. 30 to 40 drops per dropperful. Herbal tinctures (extracts) are a highly effective way to administer herbs. They are very concentrated, they work faster than teas and are four to eight times stronger than capsules. Extracts are easily digestible and quickly assimilate into the system.

Use 6-12 drops in juice, water, under the tongue or as desired. May be taken 3 times daily. Shake well. Store in cool dark place. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use on open wounds. About 30 dropperfuls per fl oz. 30-40 drops per dropperful. Herbal tinctures (extracts) are a highly effective way to administer herbs. They are very concentrated, they work faster than teas and are four to eight times stronger than capsules. Extracts are easily digestible and quickly assimilate into the system.
