  • arjuna bark

There are many names for this tree: Arjun, Arjun Tree, Arjuna, Terminalia Arjuna, Arjuna Herb, Arjuna Root, Marudha Maram. For over three centuries the thick bark has been used in Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurvedic medicine is a form of alternative medicine in use primarily in the Indian subcontinent. Arjuna has been widely praised and used for its curative properties in heart problems. The bark of the tree is the main part of the tree that is used for medicinal purposes. The bark contains calcium salts, magnesium salts, tannins and glucosides and has stimulant, tonic, antibacterial, antimutagenic, and astringent properties. The leaves have been used also, but not for many medicinal items.

Arjuna is a large sized deciduous tree found throughout India and Pakistan, possibly originating from the lower Himalayas. Arjuna tree is an evergreen grows to a height of 60 to 90 feet, usually has a buttressed trunk, and forms a wide canopy at the crown, from which branches drop downwards. It has oblong, conical leaves which are green on the top and brown below and smooth, grey bark. The pale yellow flowers appear between March and June. The glabrous fibrous woody fruit is 1.25 to 2.5 inches, divided into five wings and appears September and November. The arjuna tree is usually found growing on river banks or near dry river beds in West Bengal and south and central India. It is known as neer maruthu in Tamil and Malayalam, and kohda in Rajasthan.

The arjuna is one of the species whose leaves are fed on by the Antheraea paphia moth which produces the tassar silk (tussah), a wild silk of commercial importance.

The Arjuna was introduced into Ayurveda as a treatment for heart disease by Vagbhata (c. 7th century CE). It is traditionally prepared as a milk decoction. In the Ashtanga Hridayam, Vagbhata mentions arjuna in the treatment of wounds, hemorrhages and ulcers, appied topically as a powder. Arjuna is regarded as sacred trees of India.

Arjuna is a cardio-protective herbal remedy. The bark of the deciduous tree is used for medicinal therapies. It improves cardiac muscle function and pumping actions of the heart. Scientific studies have shown Arjuna to be very effective when used regularly over a period of time for the treatment of angina, coronary artery disease, heart failure, edema, and possibly hypercholesterolemia. Studies have also shown Arjuna to have positive effects in the treatment of gonorrhea. Externally, this herb has been used to treat acne, blemishes, wounds, dysentery, and diarrhea. Here is a list of ailments Arjuna has been able to assist with by itself or with other herbs:
    • Heart Diseases: Cardiac stimulant, Angina, Endocarditic, Mitral Regurgitation, Heals heart tissue scars after surgery. Arjuna is used specifically for all conditions associated with cardiac failure including irregular heartbeat, palpitations, mitral valve prolapse, coronary artery disease, hypertension and congestive heart failure. It provides a significant cardiac protection in myocardial infarction commonly known as heart attack. Arjuna has a stimulant effect on the heart so it is particularyly useful for a weak heart. Arjuna herb nourishes heart muscles, which is very helpful in regular expansion and contraction of the heart. Arjuna strengthens the heart muscle, unlike digitalis or nitroglycerin that only strengthens and restores heart beat with no nutritive effect on the heart muscle itself. It helps in both vasoconstruction as well as vasodilation that makes the vessels flexible thereby making it very much helpful for proper functioning of circulatory system. It helps in lowering cholesterol levels and maintaining it to normal levels. Arjuna contains the antioxidant properties similar to vitamin E so it helps in maintaining the cholesterol level at the normal rate.

    • The bark is useful as an anti-ischemic and cardioprotective agent in hypertension and ischemic heart disease. It also has a tonic effect in cases of cirrhosis of the liver. It induces a drug-dependent decrease in blood pressure and heart rate. It has been reported to possess protective cardiovascular and hypolipidemic properties. It reduces the level of triglycerides and cholesterol and has been reported to enhance the synthesis of LDL-apoprotein (apoB). It inhibits the oxidation of LDL and accelerates the turnover of LDL-cholesterol in liver. This enhances the elimination of cholesterol from the body. The suppression of hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis by Terminalia arjuna is the mechanism responsible for a significant lowering of beta-lipoprotein lipids and the recovery of HDL components in hyperlipidemia.

A combination Ayurvedic therapy containing terminalia and approximately 40 other herbs has also shown some promise for angina.

In a study on the efficacy of the bark powder in treating congestive cardiac failure (CCF), over 40 percent of the cases showed marked improvement. CCF due to congenital anomaly of heart and valvular disease was also brought under control. 4 out of 9 cases of CCF due to chronic bronchitis were also relieved by the treatment. Arjuna relieved symptomatic complaints of essential hypertension viz. giddiness, insomnia, lassitude, headache and the inability to concentrate. Oral administration of an aqueous suspension of the bark powder reduces coagulation, bleeding and prothrombin time.

In a double-blind crossover study, twelve subjects with refractory chronic congestive heart failure (idiopathic dialated cardiomyopathy (n=10): previous myocardial infarction (n=1), or peripartum cardiomyopathy (n=1), received Terminalia arjuna , at a dose of 500 mg every eight hours, or placebo for two weeks, each treatment protocol separated by a two-week washout period, as an adjuvant to conventional therapy. Terminalia, compared to placebo, was associated with improvement in symptoms and signs of heart failure, decrease in echo-left ventricular and diastolic and end systolic volume indices, increase in left ventricular stroke volume index, and increase in left ventricular ejection fractions. A study with similar dosing on primarily post-myocardial infarction angina patients found improvements in cardiac function. Prolonged use resulted in no adverse side effects or signs of renal, hepatic, or hematological abnormalities.

A 1-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial of 58 individuals evaluated the effectiveness of terminalia for angina by comparing it against placebo and also against the standard drug isosorbide mononitrate. The results indicated that the herb reduced anginal episodes and increased exercise capacity. It was more effective than placebo and approximately as effective as the medication.

A subsequent 3-month study compared the effectiveness of Terminal arjuna against placebo in 40 people with a recent heart attack. All participants in this study suffered from a particular complication of a heart attack called ischaemic mitral regurgitation. The results showed that use of the herb improved heart function and reduced angina symptoms.

Terminalia arjuna in cardiovascular diseases: making the transition from traditional to modern medicine in India. Maulik SK, Katiyar CK. Department of Pharmacology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi 110029, India., Curr Pharm Biotechnol. 2010 Dec;11(8):855-60.

The stem bark of Terminalia arjuna (Roxb.) is used by the Ayurvedic physicians in India for the treatment of various cardiovascular diseases, collectively referred to as hritroga. It has been extensively studied in animal models to demonstrate cardioprotective properties, ranging from positive inotropic- , hypolipdemic-, coronary vasodilatory- and antioxidant effects to induction of stress protein in heart. Various bioactive compounds, like triterpinoids, tannins, flavonoids and minerals have been isolated from the stem bark. A number of clinical studies have also reported its beneficial effects in patients of chronic stable angina, endothelial dysfunction, heart failure and even ischemic mitral regurgitation. However, there are some identified lacunae, like standardisation of the 'drug', toxicity studies along with pharmacological interactions with other drugs and large multicentre randomized clinical trials, before its use by modern medicine is acceptable.
