Anantmul (Hemidesmus indicus) is also known as Hemidesmus, Indian sarsaparilla, East Indian Sarsaparilla, Indian Ipecac, and as False Sarsaparilla. Hemidesmus belongs to an entirely different plant family than Sarsaparilla and it does not contain the same saponins or other principle constituents found in Sarsaparilla. It was introduced to Europe in the 16th century as a treatment for syphilus; however, its reputation was disguised under the terms "alternative" or "blood purifier," and has remained as such into the present century. Hemidesmus is a tonic with alternative, demulcent, diaphoretic, diuretic and blood purifying qualities.

Anantmul is a climbing twiner plant found in Central and Southern India, The part used in Ayurvedic medicin is the root. Anantmul, literally 'the eternal root' in Sanskrit, is a thin creeping plant with long, red spreading roots and a sweet, aromatic odor. Its Hindi name, Sugandhi, means 'the fragrant one'. Anantmul's color and spreading quality suggest its affinity for the circulatory system and the blood. It spreads throughout the body, cooling and removing excess pitta in the digestive tract, joints, nerves and reproductive system. As a pitta reducer and pitta-balancing herb it is used to support proper function of the genitourinary system and to promote healthy skin and a clear complexion. Anantmul is said to promote the production of breast milk in women and support the healthy production of sperm and testosterone in men. Its pitta-reducing qualities extend beyond the body as it is traditionally used to cleanse the mind of negative emotions such as anger and irritability. This herb is believed to purify the blood and have diuretic and diaphoretic actions.

Today Anantmul is still used for treating venereal diseases, and it can stimulate the appetite and improve general overall health. The root of Anantmul is an alterative tonic, diuretic, demulcent, diaphoretic and carminative. It is also used to treat chronic rheumatism, gravel, dyspepsia, fever, asthma, bronchitis, and leucorrhea. Anantmul is said to promote health and cure all kinds of diseases caused by vitiated blood. Anantmul promotes health and vigor. As a blood purifier it works well with Burdock root.

Externally, it can be used as a wash for genital sores or herpes, and used for painful, arthritic joints.

A decoction of stalks and leaves of anantmul is used for skin eruptions and skin diseases, syphilis, elephantitis, loss of sensation, hemiplegia, loss of appetite, blood purification, kidney and urinary disorders, hearing disorders, and fevers. Anantmul root is said to be good for gout, rheumatism, colds, and catarrhal problems as well as for relieving flatulence, skin problems, scrofula, ringworm and tatters.
