    ACAI HERBAL DESCRIPTION

    AMAZON PALM TREES

Acai berry does have a scientific name and it is Euterpe Oleracea. It is also known as Acai Palm, Amazon Acai, Assai Palm. The Acai palm is cultivated for their fruit and superior hearts of palm. The Acai fruit is a small purple berry that grows on slender palm trees. The Acai palm tree and its berries are indigenous to Central and South America. The Acai has been used for thousands of years by the indigenous tribes of the Brazilian rain forest. It has been used for its extraordinary nutritional healing and the Brazilians call it "Tree of Life." Acai fruit is highly nutritional serving as a traditional food for the native people living in the Amazon forest and although consumed for centuries as an essential food in South America, it was only at the turn of the twenty first century that it was introduced to the outside commercial world. Global demand for the fruit has expanded rapidly in recent years, and Acai is now cultivated for that purpose primarily. Euterpe edulis is a closely related species which is not the primary source of hearts of palm.

Eight species are native to Central and South America, from Belize southward to Brazil and Peru, growing mainly in swamps and floodplains. Acai palms are tall, slender palms growing upwards of 82 feet in height with pinnate leaves up to 9.3 feet long. Few named cultivars exist, and varieties differ mostly in the nature of the fruit. 'Branco' is a rare variety local to the Amazon estuary in which the berries do not change color but remain green when ripe. This is believed to be due to a recessive gene since of 'Branco' palm seeds only about 30 percent mature to express this trait. It has less iron and antioxidants but more oil and many believe it to have a superior taste and digestability to purple Acai. 'BRS-Para Dwarf' was developed by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Agency. It grows to at most 5 to 7 meters tall, fruits sooner (3 years from seed), and produces a larger seed yielding 25 percent more fruit pulp than wild Acaí.

    ACAI NUTRITIONAL CONTENT

Some of the constituents in Acai include Anthocyanins, fiber, sterols, gallic acid, potassium, calcium, iron, protein, Omega-6 fatty acid, Omega-9 fatty acid, B vitamins and vitamins C and E. The palm tree is thin and approximately 25 meters high (82 feet) with groups of branches and ribbon-like leaves. The berries hang from the branches in large clusters. Each tree produces about 20 kilograms of fruit each year and is one of the leading crops in Brazil. The Acai berry is the only part used and usually with the seed removed. It was revered as an energy food and was traditionally pulped to make wine. Because the berries will start to spoil within 24 hours of being harvested, they must be quickly turned into juice, wine, or freeze dried and turned into a powder. The line of Acai offered by Mountain Rose Herbs is freeze dried. Acai berry is relatively new to the western world and has yet to be thoroughly researched. What is known is that the Acai berry is extremely high in antioxidants and anthocyanins, rich in protein fiber, vitamin E and iron. It is naturally low in sugar and the flavor is described as a mixture of red wine and chocolate.

According to another source, a powdered preparation of freeze-dried Acai fruit pulp and skin was reported to contain (per 100 grams of dry powder): 533.9 calories, 52.2 grams carbohydrates, 8.1 grams protein, and 32.5 grams total fat. The carbohydrate portion included 44.2 grams of dietary fiber and low sugar value (pulp is not sweet). The powder was also shown to contain (per 100 grams): negligible vitamin C, 260 milligrams calcium, 4.4 milligrams iron, and 1002 IU vitamin A, as well as aspartic acid and glutamic acid; the amino acid content was 7.59 percent of total dry weight (versus 8.1 percent protein). The fat content of Acai consists of oleic acid (56.2 percent of total fats), palmitic acid (24.1 percent), and linoleic acid (12.5 percent). Acai also contains beta-sitosterol (78 to 91 percent of total sterols). The oil compartments in Acai fruit contain polyphenols such as procyanidin oligomers and vanillic acid, syringic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, protocatechuic acid, and ferulic acid, which were shown to degrade substantially during storage or exposure to heat.

Nutritional content and quality may vary from product to product and manufacturer to manufacturer, depending on species used, growth, harvesting and processing method protocols.

ACAI USES, HEALTH BENEFITS, & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

    ANTIOXIDANT FREE RADICAL FIGHTER

Acai is set apart from other berry and fruit products because of its antioxidant content. Studies show that Acai has up to 33 times the antioxidant content as red wine grapes. Few other berry or fruit products can come close to matching the nutritional and antioxidant content of Acai. Acai gives you the energy from your youth, with added vitality and increased stamina. The highly potent antioxidant properties of pure Acai deliver a massive attack on vitality robbing and cancer causing free radicals. Each gram of Acai delivers an amazing 3800 Orac value, the highest occurring in any fruit in nature (Orac is the measuring strength of a fruit for potency.) Based on the listed Orac Value the anti-oxidant strength is equivalent to about 7 servings of fruit. Research has shown that the antioxidants in the Acai Berry have aided in the fight to help support healthy cholesterol levels already within a normal range. Acai also contains two good fatty acids, Omega 6 (Linoleic acid) and Omega 9 (Oleic acid) each of which plays a large role in maintenance of your cardio vascular system. Acai has a high level of fibers that is good for elderly and for people who have problems with digestive organs.

A Brazilian berry popular in health food contains antioxidants that destroyed cultured human cancer cells in a recent University of Florida study, one of the first to investigate the fruit's purported benefits. Published recently in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the study showed extracts from Acai berries triggered a self-destruct response in up to 86 percent of leukemia cells tested, said Stephen Talcott, an assistant professor with University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. "Acai berries are already considered one of the richest fruit sources of antioxidants," Talcott said. "This study was an important step toward learning what people may gain from using beverages, dietary supplements or other products made with the berries."

    HARVESTING & FRUIT USES

The fruit, commonly known as Acai berry, is a small, round, black-purple drupe about 1 inch (25 mm) in circumference, similar in appearance but smaller than a grape and with less pulp, and produced in branched panicles of 500 to 900 fruits. The exocarp of the ripe fruits is a deep purple color, or green, depending on the kind of Acai and its maturity. The mesocarp is pulpy and thin, with a consistent thickness of 1 mm or less. It surrounds the voluminous and hard endocarp, which contains a single large seed about 0.25 to 0.40 inches (7 to 10 mm) in diameter. The seed makes up about 80 percent of the fruit. Two crops of fruit are produced each year. The fruits can be harvested and consumed.

A study of three traditional Caboclo populations in the Brazilian Amazon, Acai palm was described as the most important plant species because the fruit makes up a major component of their diet, up to 42 percent of the total food intake by weight.

In 2005, an article published by Greenpeace International stated that "the tasty dark violet wine of Acai is the most important non-wood forest product in terms of money from the river delta of the Amazon." A 2008 Los Angeles Times article noted that while Acai has been acclaimed by some sources as a renewable resource that can provide a sustainable livelihood for subsistence harvesters without damaging the Amazon Rainforest, conservationists worry that Acai could succumb to the destructive agribusiness model of clear-cut lands, sprawling plantations, and liberal application of pesticides and fertilizer. In May 2009, Bloomberg reported that the expanding popularity of Acai in the United States was "depriving Brazilian jungle dwellers of a protein-rich nutrient they have relied on for generations." Although most Acai is grown conventionally, the US company Sambazon established USDA Organic certification for their Acai palm plantations in 2003 and has also implemented fair trade certification.

One laboratory study found that commercially available Acai powder added to the diet of fruit flies lengthened their lives when challenged by chemical or genetic oxidative stress. Dietary Acai also restored the flies' circadian rhythm disturbed by the herbicide paraquat.

    OTHER ACAI USES

Apart from the use of its fruit as food or beverage, the Acai palm has other commercial uses. Leaves may be made into hats, mats, baskets, brooms and roof thatch for homes, and trunk wood, resistant to pests, for building construction. Tree trunks may be processed to yield minerals. The palm heart is widely exploited as a delicacy. Comprising 80 percent of the fruit mass, Acai seeds may be ground for livestock food or as a component of organic soil for plants. Planted seeds are used for new palm tree stock, which, under the right growing conditions, can require months to form seedlings. The seeds are a source of polyunsaturated and saturated fatty acids.

Orally administered Acai has been tested as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging of the gastrointestinal system. Its anthocyanins have also been characterized for stability as a natural food coloring agent.

    ACAI & WEIGHT LOSS

If you are struggling with your weight you are probably looking for a diet pill that is safe and effective. According to marketing claims, you no longer have to choose between the two. Marketers claim that it is completely possible to choose a diet pill that can increase your metabolism, reduce your hunger drive, and improve your health. There may not be just one ingredient that can do all this but if you carefully choose ingredients that can work together you can achieve complete results. Acai is an ingredient that is now being included in many diet pills because of the benefits it has been found to produce. When you use a diet pill with Acai do not expect it to cause significant weight loss results. But if you include it in a diet pill your health may be improved since Acai provides numerous antioxidants which can decrease the chances of certain diseases and increase immunity.

When you use a diet pill there are usually tons of side effects that you have to face. If these side effects are causing problems you may need to find a way to combat them by taking a smaller dose or changing the product you are using. By switching to a diet pill with Acai you may experience fewer side effects because it increases immunity and the function of the body. Acai is full of antioxidants. It is thought to be one of the most antioxidant rich foods (research still needs to be done regarding extensive marketing claims).

Some diseases such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and high cholesterol are thought to be due in part to free radicals in the body. Antioxidants, like those found in Acai, may help to neutralize the effects of free radicals. By reducing these free radicals you will be able to more easily overcome diseases. This is the idea used by those who are recommending the benefits of Acai. It does not cause weight loss but proper health is needed for successful weight loss.

A study released in January 2010 in the Nutrition Journal has shown that Acai can reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol when given to animals eating a high fat diet. With a fast food joint on every corner and fatty foods available at every gas station and vending machine high fat diets are the norm which is one reason that Acai is thought to be such an effective ingredient to be included in diet pills. Many people are overweight and also suffer from diabetes and high cholesterol. If you can correct these issues you will be much further ahead.

You are definitely not going to lose a significant amount of weight when you use Acai. It does not successfully reduce hunger or increase metabolism but when Acai is included with other clinically proven ingredients it can improve your ability to lose weight. Be cautious of marketing claims and do research on products and their sellers before spending money. Many false claims have been made and many marketing scams have been exposed.

    ACAI DIETARY SUPPLEMENT MARKETING

In the general consumer market, Acai is sold as frozen pulp, juice, or as an ingredient in various products from beverages, including grain alcohol, smoothies, foods, cosmetics and supplements. Many claims have been made about its nutritional and health benefits. Keep in mind about marketing tactics - They are trying to sell you a product. There is usually some truth in the benefits of most products, but there is no product that is a "cure-all" for every ailment and disorder. Only obtain quality Acai products from reliable sources, question claims and avoid those supplement companies that push their products as an ultimate cure-all and avoid marketing scams. At the same time, take negative comments by so-called quack watchdogs and those with "authority" with a heavy grain of salt as well. Just because research has not proven usefulness, it does not mean a nutritional product or supplement is not useful, especially after many years of product use by consumers or in folk-lore. It just needs more research that is performed properly. Many nutritional products work best when combined with other compatible products or taken as "whole foods" and may not work as well when active constituents are isolated without their supporting constituents.

In 2004, it became popular to consume Acai as a supplement due in part to the rapid success of multi-level marketing company MonaVie that sells an Acaí blend tonic for 40 dollars a bottle. Another reason is the proliferation of various Acai supplement companies that misused celebrity names like Oprah Winfrey and Rachael Ray to promote acai weight loss pills online. Marketers of these products make unfounded claims that Acai and its antioxidant qualities provide a variety of health benefits, none of which has scientific confirmation to date. False claims include reversal of diabetes and other chronic illnesses, as well as expanding size of the penis and increasing men's sexual virility. As of April 2012, there were few scientifically controlled studies providing proof of any health benefits from consuming Acai. No Acai products have been evaluated by the FDA, and their efficacy may be considered doubtful. Specifically, there is no scientific evidence that Acai consumption affects body weight, promotes weight loss or has any positive health effect. More research needs to be done and better protocols need to be used.

According to the Washington, D.C. based Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) thousands of consumers have had trouble stopping recurrent charges on their credit cards when they cancel free trials of Acai-based products. Even some web sites purporting to warn about Acai-related scams are themselves perpetrating scams. In late 2008, lawyers for The Oprah Winfrey Show began investigating statements from supplement manufacturers who alleged that frequent Oprah guest Dr. Mehmet Oz had recommended their product or Acai in general for weight loss.

    POLYPHENOLS & ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY

A comparative analysis from in vitro studies reported that Acai has intermediate polyphenol content and antioxidant potency among 11 varieties of frozen juice pulps, scoring lower than acerola, mango, strawberry, and grapes. A powdered preparation of freeze-dried Acai fruit pulp and skin was shown to contain cyanidin 3-O-glucoside and cyanidin 3-O-rutinoside as major anthocyanins (3.19 mg/g) however, anthocyanins accounted for only about 10 percent of the overall antioxidant capacity in vitro. The powdered preparation was also reported to contain twelve flavonoid-like compounds, including homoorientin, orientin, taxifolin deoxyhexose, isovitexin, scoparin, as well as proanthocyanidins (12.89 mg/g), and low levels of resveratrol (1.1 µg/g). A study on another different freeze-dried Acai product (Opti-Acai) reported that the formulation contained much lower levels of anthocyanins, proanthocyanadins, and other polyphenol compounds as compared with blueberries and other antioxidant-rich fruits.

In an in vitro study of different Acai varieties for their antioxidant capacity, a white one displayed no antioxidant activity against different oxygen radicals, whereas the purple variety most often used commercially had antioxidant activity against peroxyl radicals and to a lesser extent peroxynitrite but little activity against hydroxyl radicals.

Freeze-dried Acai powder was found to have antioxidant activity in vitro against superoxide and peroxyl radicals, and mild activity for peroxynitrite and hydroxyl radicals. The powder was reported to inhibit hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidation in neutrophils, and to have a slight stimulatory effect on the reactive radical, nitric oxide.

Extracts of Acai seeds were reported to have antioxidant capacity in vitro against peroxyl radicals, similar to the antioxidant capacity of the pulp, with higher antioxidant capacity against peroxynitrite and hydroxyl radicals.

The anthocyanins of fruit likely have relevance to antioxidant capacity only in the plant's natural defensive mechanisms and in vitro. The Linus Pauling Institute and European Food Safety Authority state that dietary anthocyanins and other flavonoids have little or no direct antioxidant food value following digestion. Unlike controlled test tube conditions, the fate of anthocyanins in vivo shows they are poorly conserved (less than 5 percent), with most of what is absorbed existing as chemically modified metabolites destined for rapid excretion. When the entire scientific literature to date and putative health claims of Acai are assessed, experts concluded in 2011 that the fruit is more a phenomenon of Internet marketing than of scientific substance.

    JUICE BLEND STUDIES

Various studies have been conducted that analyze the antioxidant capacity of Acai juice blends to pure fruit juices or fruit pulp. Acai juice blends contain an undisclosed percentage of Acai. When three commercially available juice mixes containing unspecified percentages of Acai juice were compared for in vitro antioxidant capacity against red wine, tea, six types of pure fruit juice, and pomegranate juice, the average antioxidant capacity was ranked lower than that of pomegranate juice, Concord grape juice, blueberry juice, and red wine. The average was roughly equivalent to that of black cherry or cranberry juice, and was higher than that of orange juice, apple juice, and tea.

    ACAI SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS

    SAFETY CONCERNS

Few problems are associated with the use of Acai and at this time there are no known issues. It can help to reverse some of the side effects caused by other diet pill ingredients because of its ability to reduce free radicals and improve the health of the body.

If you are on medications discuss using Acai with your health care practitioner. For children, pregnant women or nursing mothers, discuss with your health care practitioner or midwife before using. If you are taking any other herbs or supplements please consult with a qualified healthcare provider before starting any new regimen. Keep nutritional supplements out of reach of children and pets.

Acai is a rich source of anthocyanins and other phenolics. Anthocyanins are compounds that have potent antioxidant activity, allowing for the neutralization of potentially harmful free radicals. By neutralizing these free radicals, anthocyanins from acai may serve to maintain the healthy function of numerous systems and organs. Some of the anthocyanins that have been found in acai include cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-glucoside-coumarate. Other phenolics include catechin and epi-catechin (the same compounds in green tea), quercetin derivatives and other flavonoids. It is likely that the synergistic effects of these compounds as present in acai fruit are responsible for its potent antioxidant activities. Acai's deep purple coloration makes it a rich source of beneficial polyphenols. While these compounds are potent antioxidants as outlined above, they also confer benefits beyond their free radical scavenging activity. A number of these phytochemicals are known to have beneficial effects on cellular health. Some mechanisms employed by polyphenols include the induction or inhibition of enzyme function and alteration of signal transduction, enhancing the ability of cells to communicate more effectively with each other. Many polyphenols are considered "biological response modifiers", since they possess multiple effects, including the ability to decrease oxidative stress to cells. Since polyphenols are water soluble, they are also well-absorbed and assimilated, allowing them to efficiently promote cellular health.

Acai Berries naturally contain Vitamin C and are an excellent source of polyphenols, including rutin, anthocyanins, and catechins. Acai is also naturally rich in ellagic acid. These and other antioxidant compounds protect tissues from free radical attack, a key factor in healthy aging. The nutrients and antioxidants in Acai also help support healthy immune and inflammatory response through their modulatory effects on Nitric Oxide (NO) production. Each of these effects is also important for the support of healthy heart and blood vessels.
