  • ANTIOXIDANT OVERVIEW

    FREE RADICAL FIGHTERS

Antioxidants are vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that protect and repair cells from damage caused by free radicals. Many experts believe this damage plays a part in a number of chronic diseases, including hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), cancer, and arthritis. Free radicals can also interfere with your immune system. So, fighting off damage with antioxidants helps keep your immune system strong, making you better able to ward off colds, flu, and other infections.

Antioxidants are compounds that neutralize the cellular-damaging effects of free radicals. Free radicals are produced naturally in your body, but when you exercise hard, your body pumps out more free radicals. Environmental factors such as pollution, the sun, cigarette smoke, and herbicides can also spawn free radicals. The danger is that free-radical damage may lead to cancer. Antioxidants interact with and stabilize free radicals and may prevent some of the damage that free radicals otherwise might cause. As an active person, more antioxidants may help you slow the aging process, ward off cancer and stress, and promote good health.

    SILYMARIN & MILK THISTLE DESCRIPTION

Milk Thistle is also known as Silybum marianum, Carduus marianus syn. Silybum marianum, Mary Thistle, Silybum, Silymarin, Marian, St. Mary's, Our Lady's Thistle, and Wild Artichoke.

Milk Thistle extract is a potent antioxidant which prevents harm from free radicals and lends nutritional support to the liver. Milk Thistle seed extract contains silymarin, a unique type of flavonoid-like compound considered the active ingredient of milk thistle. Silymarin is a unique flavonoid complex containing silybin, silydianin, and silychrisin that is derived from the Milk Thistle plant. These unique phytochemicals have been the subject of decades of research into their beneficial properties.

Milk Thistle is a tall herb with prickly leaves and a milky sap. Milk Thistle's common name comes from the white markings on the leaves, its milky sap, and its traditional use by nursing mothers to increase milk. English gardeners at the turn of the century grew Milk Thistle as a source of food, using the spiny leaves as lettuce, the stalks like asparagus, the roasted seeds for coffee, and the roots (soaked overnight) as an oyster plant. The fruit is the part used for medicinal purposes. The small hard fruits are sometimes mistakenly called seeds but Milk Thistle seeds have no medicinal value. The fruit is known technically as achenes from which a feathery tuft or pappus has been remove and was mainly used for liver complaints. Early Europeans boiled and ate the leaves like artichokes and used them as a spring tonic after the winter months when people had been deprived of fresh vegetables. This plant was also used to increase breast-milk production, and was considered excellent for melancholy (depression), which they thought was associated with the liver. Milk Thistle has anticancer and anti-inflammatory properties, and even though the names are similar, Milk Thistle is an entirely different plant than Blessed Holy Thistle.

SILYMARIN & MILK THISTLE USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

After medical research on the medicinal effects of Milk Thistle, Germany’s Commission E approved an oral extract of Milk Thistle as a treatment for liver disease which includes alcoholic hepatitis, fatty liver, mild liver cirrhosis, liver poisoning and acute viral hepatitis. It also can protect the liver from the effects of liver-toxic medications. Evidence has shown anticancer effects against breast and prostate cancer, and it is also recommended for gall bladder and psoriasis, though there is no conclusive evidence that it works for these conditions. When taken intravenously, silybinin, the potent and collective ingredient in Milk Thistle, is the only known antidote to poisoning by the deathcap mushroom, Amanita phalloides. There is no real equivalent in the world of conventional medicine for Milk Thistle / Silymarin.

    SILYMARIN & LIVER PROTECTION

Milk Thistle is best known for its use as a liver protectant and decongestant, which can be traced to the Greeks and Pliny the Elder (23-79AD), who wrote that it was excellent for "carrying off bile." The famous English herbalist Culpepper (1616-1654) used milk thistle to cleanse the liver and spleen, and to treat jaundice and gallstones. In the U.S., the Eclectics (a prominent group of American health practitioners who practiced during the 20th century) used it for liver problems, and to treat varicose veins, menstrual problems, and kidney disorders. The plant was also cultivated as a food, providing leaves for salad, seeds for a coffee-like drink, and flowers, which were eaten as artichokes are today. In 1968, a group of German scientists discovered the active flavonoid complex Silymarin, which provides Milk Thistle's medicinal benefits. Since then, hundreds of studies have been done on Silymarin, and it is approved in the German Commission E Monographs (the most accurate information available on the safety and efficacy of herbs) as a supportive treatment for inflammatory liver conditions such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, and fatty infiltration caused by alcohol and other toxins.

    Silymarin is used to:
    • Regenerate liver cells damaged by alcohol or drugs.
    • Decongest the liver (A liver decongestant stimulates bile flow through the liver and gallbladder, thus reducing stagnation and preventing gallstone formation and bile-induced liver damage.)
    • Increase the survival rate of patients with cirrhosis.
    • Complement the treatment of viral hepatitis.
    • Protect against industrial poisons, such as carbon tetracholoride (a colorless gas that leaks into air, water and soil near manufacturing and waste sites).
    • Protect the liver against pharmaceuticals that stress the liver, such as acetaminophen and tetracycline.
    • Antidote and prevent poisoning from the death cap mushroom, Amanita phalloides.

    SILYMARIN CHEMICAL ACTIVITIES

  • As an antioxidant, silymarin scavenges for free radicals that can damage cells exposed to toxins. Silymarin has been said to be at least ten times more potent in antioxidant activity than vitamin E.
  • It increases glutathione in the liver by more than 35 percent in healthy subjects and by more than 50 percent in rats. Glutathione is responsible for detoxifying a wide range of hormones, drugs, and chemicals. High levels of glutathione in the liver increases its capacity for detoxification.
  • Silymarin also increases the level of the important antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase in cell cultures.
  • It stimulates protein synthesis in the liver, which results in an increase in the production of new liver cells to replace the damaged ones.
  • Silymarin inhibits the synthesis of leukotrienes (mediators of inflammation, which can result in psoriasis, among other things).

  • SILYMARIN SCIENTIFIC STUDIES

Silymarin has proved to be successful in treating alcohol-related liver disease. In one study, researchers assessed the benefits of milk thistle extract on 170 patients, 91 of them alcoholics with liver cirrhosis. Subjects received 140 mg silymarin three times a day for 41 months. The four-year survival rate was 58 percent in the silymarin group and 39 percent in the placebo group. The reduced death rate among those taking silymarin was most pronounced in the alcoholic cirrhosis subgroup. There were no side effects from silymarin. This study is significant for several reasons. Since there were no side effects, the results support the idea that long-term treatment is beneficial and not likely to be harmful. These results also indicate that silymarin may be particularly effective for patients with alcohol-induced liver damage.

Both in vitro and animal research suggest that silibinin has hepatoprotective (antihepatotoxic) properties that protect liver cells against toxins. Silibinin has also demonstrated in vitro anti-cancer effects against human prostate adenocarcinoma cells, estrogen-dependent and -independent human breast carcinoma cells, human ectocervical carcinoma cells, human colon cancer cells, and both small and nonsmall human lung carcinoma cells.

Lab experiments on mice showed that silibinin protects the hepatic cells against the toxin alpha-amanitin which causes Amanita phalloides mushroom poisoning. Chemically modified silibinin, silibinin dihydrogen disuccinate disodium (trade name Legalon SIL) a solution for injection, is currently being tested as a treatment of severe intoxications with hepatotoxic substances, such as death cap (Amanita phalloides) poisoning. There is also clinical evidence for the use of silibinin as a supportive element in alcoholic and Child grade 'A' liver cirrhosis.

A recent study suggested that silymarin may help patients with type II diabetes by assisting in blood sugar control.

    PHARMACOLOGY

Poor water solubility and bioavailability of silymarin led to the development of enhanced formulations. Silipide (trade name Siliphos), a complex of silymarin and phosphatidylcholine (lecithin), is about 10 times more bioavailable than silymarin. It has been also reported that silymarin inclusion complex with beta-cyclodextrin is much more soluble than silymarin itself. There have also been prepared glycosides of silybin, which show better water solubility and even stronger hepatoprotective effect. Silibinin has been reported to exert a neuroprotective effect in mice.

Silymarin, as other flavonoids, has been shown to inhibit P-glycoprotein-mediated cellular efflux. The modulation of P-glycoprotein activity may result in altered absorption and bioavailability of drugs that are P-glycoprotein substrates. It has been reported that silymarin inhibits cytochrome P450 enzymes and an interaction with drugs primarily cleared by P450s cannot be excluded.

SILYMARIN & MILK THISTLE DOSAGE INFORMATION

Milk Thistle (and Silymarin) comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products.

The common dosage of Milk Thistle is 200 mg 2 to 3 times a day of a standardized extract to contain 70 percent Silymarin. When taking silymarin (the lesser form of Silybinin), bound to phosphatidylcholine, it should be taken at a dosage of 100 to 200 mg twice a day. For other formulations, read and follow product label directions.

SILYMARIN & MILK THISTLE SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS

While Milk Thistle / Silymarin is believed to possess very little toxicity, given the severe nature of liver disease, it is essential to have a health care provider's supervision. If you are taking oral contraceptives, Milk Thistle may reduce their effectiveness. Silymarin may provide some protection from the effects of medications that could damage the liver. Silymarin stimulates the liver and gall bladder and therefore may have mild laxative effect in some people, but it usually subsides within two to three days.

A phase I clinical trial in humans with prostate cancer designed to study the effects of high dose silibinin found 13 grams daily to be well tolerated in patients with advanced prostate cancer with asymptomatic liver toxicity (hyperbilirubinemia and elevation of alanine aminotransferase) being the most commonly seen adverse events. The compound is also devoid of embryotoxic potential in animal models.
