ANTIOXIDANT OVERVIEW
Grape Seed Extract is a medicinal herb which is high in Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins (OPC's or PCO's). Proanthocyanidin is a bioflavonoid which has demonstrated antioxidant properties. This is known as a powerful antioxidant similar in effect to the ever popular and patented Pycnogenol, but far less expensive.
People have been using grapes since ancient times not only for eating and drinking but for medicinal purposes as well. Different parts of the plant including the grapes themselves, the leaves, and the stems, have been used. It was not until the 1970's when a French biochemist isolated from grape seed the substance called oligomeric proanthocyandin (OPC). Though proanthocyanidin is a bioconstituent of white, red, and purple grapes, the most concentrated amounts are thought to be in the seeds of purple grapes. Grape seed extract can be taken as a capsule, pill, or tincture.
Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins (OPCs)
Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) are naturally occurring substances present in a variety of food and botanical sources. They are unique phytochemicals known as flavonoids that have powerful antioxidant capabilities and excellent bioavailability. OPCs are highly water soluble, so the body is able to absorb them rapidly. Clinical tests suggest that OPCs may be as much as 50 times more potent than vitamin E and 20 times more potent than vitamin C in terms of bioavailable antioxidant activity. What's more, OPCs work with the antioxidant glutathione to recycle and restore oxidized vitamin C, thus increasing the vitamin's effectiveness. Because they are able to cross the blood-brain barrier, OPCs can protect the brain and spinal nerves against free radical damage. In addition to their antioxidant activity, OPCs protect the liver from damage caused by toxic doses of acetaminophen, a non-prescription pain reliever; they strengthen and repair connective tissue, including that of the cardiovascular system, and they moderate allergic and inflammatory responses by reducing histamine production.
OPCs are found throughout plant life; however, the two main sources are Pine Bark Extract (Pycnogenol), produced from a French coastal pine tree, and Grape Seed Extract, made from the seeds of the wine grape (Vitis vinifera). Pycnogenol was the first source of OPCs discovered and the process for extracting it was patented in the 1950s. As a result, even though Pycnogenol is a trademarked name for Pine Bark Extract, the term is often used informally as a generic term to refer to other OPC sources as well, most notably Grape Seed Extract.
Inflammation: Grape Seed Extract has anti-inflammatory properties and can also help moderate allergic and inflammatory responses by reducing histamine production. It has been utilized in the treatment of allergies that respond to antihistamines. It acts against oxidative stress and tissue damage and has demonstrated itself to offer better protection than either vitamins C or E. It's anti-inflammatory action is thought to be derived form it's ability to inhibit the release of histamines and prostaglandin.
Circulatory: Grape Seed Extract is rich in polyphenols, a beneficial compound shown as being high in antioxidants that helps to improve circulation. As it promotes and improves healthy blood circulation and is said to have some protective properties against heart disease. It is taken by some as a treatment for bruises, gum disease, phlebitis, ulcers, arthritis, varicose veins, and other vascular problems. Experimental data suggests that Grape Seed Extract prevents the formation of plaque in the arteries. Grape Seed Extract's antioxidant properties have been used for treating inflammation, cardiac or cerebral infarction, and hypoxia from arteriosclerosis. All of this information is great for cardiovascular health.
Connective Tissue: Grape Seed Extract is used to protect, strengthen, and repair connective tissues. Proanthocyanidins are also considered helpful in improving and preserving the elasticity of skin by stabilizing collagen and elastin.
Other Functions: Grape Seed has been used as a dietary source of essential fatty acids and tocopherols, as well as an antioxidant. Grape Seed has also been used for its liver protective effects, and decreased vision, promote enzyme activity, and has anti-carcinogenic properties. There have been no findings to indicate that it can aid in weight loss or exercise.
CAUTIONS
Adverse reactions with Grape Seed Extract usage are considered relatively rare and it is usually considered to have a low toxicity. If you experience any side effects, stop usage immediately and report them to your health care professional.
If you are demonstrating any symptoms or ailments that cause you discomfort, worry, or are of a serious nature (arteriosclerosis, vascular problems, etc) you should always alert your health care professional. In addition it is always good to keep them informed of any supplements you may be taking.
Grape Seed Extract may cause excessive bleeding in those taking blood thinners. Do not take grape seed without first talking to your health care provider if you have a bleeding or blood clotting disorder; if you are taking a medicine to prevent blood clots; or if you are taking other medications, herbs, antioxidants, or health supplements (these may also affect blood clotting). Grape Seed may affect the time it takes for your blood to clot.
It is vital that you not take Grape Seed Extract if you are allergic to grapes. Although rare, allergic reactions to Grape Seed may be possible. Stop taking Grape Seed and seek emergency medical attention if you experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction including difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives.
Other concerns include that it may cause dizziness or nausea, it may interfere with cholesterol lowering drugs, and it can interact with other herbs changing the way they are absorbed.
Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open. Store at room temperature between 15-30°C (59-86°F). The tincture should be stored in airtight, dry, and light resistant container. If there is an expiration date listed on the herbal product, throw away the unused portion after the expiration date.
Note: Grape Seed has not been evaluated by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or purity. All potential risks and/or advantages of Grape Seed may not be known. Additionally, there are no regulated manufacturing standards in place for these compounds. There have been instances where herbal/health supplements have been sold which were contaminated with toxic metals or other drugs. Herbal/health supplements should be purchased from a reliable source to minimize the risk of contamination.
SUPPLEMENT DOSAGE
Take Grape Seed Extract capsules or tablets by mouth. Swallow the capsules with a large drink of water. For the best bioavailability and if you have a sensitive stomach, it is often recommended that you take Grape Seed Extract as a tincture. You can take Grape Seed Extract with or without food.
Therapeutic benefits have been shown to be dose dependent. Typically 20 mg for every 20 lbs of body weight or 75-300 mg daily for 3 weeks reducing to a 40-80 mg daily maintenance dose.
Its usage is considered safe for conception, and pregnancy.
Properly prepared Grape Seed Extract Proanthocyanidin has been said to yield a 95% concentration of the Oligomeric Proanthocyanidin Complexes (OPCs). Lengths of administration are usually based on the severity of the symptoms and the type of problem.
PURCHASING SUPPLEMENTS
There has been concern that some Grape Seed Extract products may contain residues from the chemical substances used in it's processing. Look for products that are certified free of chemical residues.
Read labels carefully before purchasing. Always, look for products that are clearly labeled with the ingredients contained and amounts.
There have been reported cases of herbal products being sold that did not contain active ingredients (the herbs active constituents) needed to be of any therapeutic value. Buying a standardized product when purchasing tinctures, capsule, or tablets may reduce the possibility of this occurrence. However, there have been reports that there is no consistent standardization of polyphenols in the Grape Seed products being sold.
Supplement Sources: Different formulations of Grape Seed are available to be used internally (orally) and externally (topically). Standardized extracts, tinctures, and solid formulations of herbal/health supplements may provide a more reliable dose of Grape Seed.
