    ANTIOXIDANT OVERVIEW

    FREE RADICAL FIGHTERS

Antioxidants are vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that protect and repair cells from damage caused by free radicals. Many experts believe this damage plays a part in a number of chronic diseases, including hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), cancer, and arthritis. Free radicals can also interfere with your immune system. So, fighting off damage with antioxidants helps keep your immune system strong, making you better able to ward off colds, flu, and other infections.

Antioxidants are compounds that neutralize the cellular-damaging effects of free radicals. Free radicals are produced naturally in your body, but when you exercise hard, your body pumps out more free radicals. Environmental factors such as pollution, the sun, cigarette smoke, and herbicides can also spawn free radicals. The danger is that free-radical damage may lead to cancer. Antioxidants interact with and stabilize free radicals and may prevent some of the damage that free radicals otherwise might cause. As an active person, more antioxidants may help you slow the aging process, ward off cancer and stress, and promote good health.

    GINKGO BILOBA HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Ginkgo, also known as Ginkgo Biloba and Maidenhair Tree, the oldest surviving species of tree on earth, is more than 225 million years old. Even though the tree died out in Europe during the Ice Age, it continued to grow in China, Japan and other parts of Asia. It was used in ceremonies and as a medicine. In traditional Chinese herbology, the seeds were used for numerous conditions. German researchers in the 1950s; however, began to investigate the medicinal properties of Ginkgo leaf extracts, so today, modern Ginkgo preparations are not the same as the traditional Chinese herb. In the U.S. Ginkgo has been one of the ten best selling herbs for more than 5 years and a standard extract of ginkgo leaf is presently one of the most frequently used plant-based medicines in Europe.

Ginkgo biloba is a powerful antioxidant herb that is best known for its ability to enhance circulation. It has powerful antioxidant effects in the brain, retina, and cardiovascular system. It is well known for its ability to enhance circulation, and a study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that it has a measurable effect on dementia in people with Alzheimer's disease and people recovering from strokes. It has the ability to squeeze through even the narrowest of blood vessels to increase the supply of oxygen to the heart, brain, and all other body parts. This aids in mental functioning (ginkgo biloba is known as the "smart herb") and helps to relieve muscle pain. Ginkgo biloba also lowers blood pressure, inhibits blood clotting, and has anti-aging properties. Ginkgo Biloba has also been used to treat hearing problems, impotence, and macular degeneration.

GINKGO BILOBA USES, HEALTH BENEFITS, & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

    GINKGO CONSTITUENTS

Ginkgo is one of the oldest living species with a deep family history dating back millions of years. Ginkgo has several key flavonoids including quercetin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetine. It also contains sufficient amounts of glycosides, non-flavonoid terpenes, carotenoids, and ginkolides A, B and C. Ginkgo constituents include gibberellin, cytokinin-like substances, ginkgolic acid, bilobol, ginnol, aspartine, and calcium. The leaves and nuts are used in medicinal preparations. The leaves are considered "sweeter" and have a gentle effect in typical preparations consisting of teas, capsules and extracts.

    ALZHEIMERS, MEMORY & COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE

This species is a relative newcomer to the herbal medicine scene and its first thorough study was conducted in 1997. Studies went on to find that Gingko helps improve the short-term memory of early diagnosed Alzheimer disease. The researchers concluded that this herb is relatively safe when taken appropriately and that it improved overall cognitive performance. Ginkgo has a mild blood thinning effect and helps overall cerebral circulation carrying vital oxygen and nutrients to the brain. Today Ginkgo is used liberally to improve both long-term and short-term memory, enhance concentration, mental alertness, very mild mood disorders and as a preliminary and lifelong supplement against Alzheimer's.

In Germany, Ginkgo is the most widely prescribed herb, as it is considered to be as effective as drug treatments used for treating Alzheimerís disease and other severe forms of memory and mental function decline. Preliminary studies show that this herb is helpful in ordinary age-related memory loss as well. Germanyís Commission E recommends Ginkgo for circulation problems that arise from hardening of the arteries.

    SEXUAL PERFORMANCE

Some studies are showing promise in Ginkgoís ability to reverse impotence or difficulty achieving orgasm when caused by certain antidepressant drugs.

    SCHIZOPHRENIA MEDICATIONS & SIDE EFFECTS

Chinese research suggests this herb can improve the effectiveness of schizophrenia medications and possibly limit their side effects as well.

    PMS RELIEF

Another study shows that Ginkgo is beneficial in relieving the bloating and fluid retention as well as the emotional disturbance associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

    DIABETES & RAYNAUDS PHENOMENON

Many people have used Ginkgo for macular degeneration, depression, complications of diabetes, and Raynaudís phenomenon; however, there is no evidence to support its effectiveness.

    OTHER AILMENTS

It is also beneficial for asthma, dementia, depression, eczema, headaches, heart and kidney disorders, and tinnitis (ringing in the ears). This herb can ease symptoms of altitude sickness as well.

    SKIN LESIONS & WOUNDS

As a topical medication, Ginkgo is used to treat lesions on the fingers, toes, heels, ears, and nose caused by exposure to extreme cold, and using Ginkgo in wound dressings can improve circulation in the skin and promote quick healing.

    GINKGO BILOBA DOSAGE INFORMATION

The recommended dosage of Ginkgo is 40 to 80 mg 3 times daily of a 50:1 extract standardized to contain 24% Ginkgo-flavone glycosides. For best results, consult with your health care provider for the treatment of your condition.

    PLANTS & HARVESTING INFORMATION

    CHINA NATIVE TREE & TCM

Native to China, the ginkgo tree is beautiful and unique, both aesthetically and biologically. Having lived for over 225 million years, the ginkgo is one of the oldest known species on the planet. Wild populations of ginkgo are rare, existing only in two known regions of the Zhejiang province in China. Nevertheless, ginkgoes are heavily cultivated across China and in some parts of the United States, with naturalized populations located in parts of Asia.

After the bombing at Hiroshima at the conclusion of World War 2, surveyors examined the effect of the blast on local plant populations. Throughout the devastation, six ginkgo trees survived the bombing, the closest of which still lives less than 1200 meters from the epicenter. This tree stands as an international symbol of resilience and the ginkgo itself is regarded as a "bearer of hope." Remarkably hardy, ginkgo trees are slow to grow and can live over 1000 years. The female trees produce small globular fruits with a distinctive unpleasant odor. As such, many cultivators distribute only the male trees which do not produce the fruit.

The natural herb has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). They are sweet, astringent, and non-heating. Recent research into the plant has discovered a range of medicinally active compounds in the leaves and this has excited a lot of interest in the health-promoting potential of the plant. The leaves contain ginkgolides, these are compounds that are unknown in any other plant species. Research has shown that it is safe in controlled environments and readily available across all international markets. The Gingko tree is a hearty species and it is recommended that one grows their own and utilize fresh picked leaves. The leaves are best harvested in the late summer to early autumn just when the colors begin to change golden. They are dried for later use.

The Fall Gold Ginkgo herbal products has the exciting distinction of being grown and harvested in the United States and is available through Mountain Rose Herbs. In contrast to their regular ginkgo leaf, Fall Gold Ginkgo is harvested during the peak of the autumn season, after the leaves have achieved their delightful golden color. Some herbal traditions recommend the use of leaves that are harvested at this later point in the season, when the medicinal properties of the plant are believed to be at their strongest.

Western herbal medicine uses the leaves either cut or whole and Eastern (Chinese) herbal medicine utilize the fruit, however the fruit is mildly toxic and applied for different ailments other than those described here. It is best to stick with the leaves unless you have been trained to use the fruit.

GINKGO SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTION INFORMATION

    SAFETY CONCERNS

Even though Ginkgo is regarded as safe, its effects on young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition, consult a health care provider or your midwife before taking this product.

Ginkgo Biloba extracts are relatively considered safe and free of side effects. In isolated cases, very large doses may lead to gastrointestinal upset which may include diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, which can be controlled by reducing the amount consumed.

Contact with live Ginkgo plants can result in severe allergic reaction, and the ingestion of seeds can be dangerous. The fruit is mildly toxic. Do not use nuts if you have a current outbreak of poison ivy or contact dermatitis, since the increased circulation to the skin caused by the herb could spread the toxin.

Ginkgo is a blood-thinning herb and it is not recommended to be taken while on blood thinning (anti-coagulant) medications. Do not use Ginkgo without the advice of a health care provider if you are taking prescription blood-thinning drugs such as Coumadin (warfarin), heparin, aspirin, or Trental (pentoxifylline). Ask a qualified herbalist before using Ginkgo if you are taking natural substances with blood-thinning properties such as garlic, phosphatidylserine, or high dose vitamin E. If you use over-the-counter pain killers regularly, you should consult with a health care provider before using gingko biloba, as the combination may result in internal bleeding.

If you are taking antipsychotics, Ginkgo could help them work more effectively and without the side effects.

If you are taking any medications or natural supplements, it is best to consult a health care provider or qualified herbalist regarding the use of Ginkgo while taking the medications and /or supplements.
