COENZYME Q-10 ANTIOXIDANT DESCRIPTION
Antioxidants are generally classified into two broad categories - water soluble (hydrophilic) and lipid soluble (hydrophobic). Your body needs both types of antioxidants because each one targets different types of cells and tissues for free radical scavenging.
Water soluble antioxidants are present in aqueous fluids, such as blood and intracellular and extracellular fluids. They react with oxidants in the cell cytosol (fluid portion of cytoplasm) and the blood plasma and helps repair the interior of walls. Examples of water soluble antioxidants include vitamin C, glutathione, and catechins. The antioxidants anthocyanins, polyphenols, resveratrol) are water-soluble antioxidants.
Lipid soluble antioxidants are localized to cellular membranes and lipoproteins. They protect cell membranes from lipid peroxidation. Examples of lipid-soluble antioxidants include vitamins E, A, and beta carotene. Both Astaxanthin and Ubiquinol contain lipid-soluble antioxidants. Lipid-soluble Astaxanthin helps repair fat/cell membranes and lipid-soluble Ubiquinol acts as an antioxidant recycler for vitamins C and E.
To fight and help neutralize free radicals, you need both types of antioxidants from as many sources as possible. When taken together, the efficacy of water- and lipid-soluble antioxidants is enhanced even more. Each type of antioxidant has its own special function in helping repair and protect your cells from free radical damage.
COENZYME Q-10 ANTIOXIDANT
Coenzyme Q-10 was discovered by Dr. Frederick Crane of Wisconsin in 1957, and studied by numerous scientists, one of which was Dr. Peter Mitchell of England, who won a Nobel Prize in 1978 for unraveling the mechanism of CoQ10 function in energy production. Lars Ernster of Sweden, enlarged upon CoQ10's importance as an antioxidant and free radical scavenger. Professor Karl Folkers went on to receive the Priestly Medal from the American Chemical Society in 1986 and the National Medal of Science from President Bush in 1990 for his work with CoQ10 and other vitamins.
Coenzyme Q-10, also known as CoQ10, is an antioxidant that is structurally similar to vitamin E. It also plays a crucial role in the generation of cellular energy, is a significant immunologic stimulant, increases circulation, has anti-aging effects, and is beneficial for the cardiovascular system. Also known as ubinquinone (from quinone, a type of coenzyme, and ubiquitous, because it exists everywhere in the body), coenzyme Q-10 is found in highest concentrations in the heart, followed by the liver, kidney, and pancreas. Your body makes CoQ10 and your cells use it to produce energy your body needs for cell growth and maintenance. Within the mitochondria, the cells' energy-production centers, Coenzyme Q-10 helps to metabolize fats and carbohydrates. It also helps to maintain the flexibility of cell membranes. It also functions as an antioxidant, which protects the body from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals. Coenzyme Q-10 help enzymes work to digest food and perform other body processes, and they help protect the heart and skeletal muscles. Other names for CoQ10 are Q10 and Ubidecarenone.
In Japan, Coenzyme Q-10 has been approved for use in treating congestive heart failure. Various research reports suggest that coenzyme Q-10 also may be beneficial in treating cancer, AIDS, muscular dystrophy, allergies, gastric ulcers, myopathy, peridontal disease, diabetes, and deafness. CoQ10 is available in the United States as a dietary supplement.
Natural dietary sources of Coenzyme Q-10 include meats, such as beef, particularly organ meats such as heart, liver and kidney, as well as peanuts, soy oil, sardines, mackerel and spinach. To put this into a perspective view, one pound of sardines, two pounds of beef or two and a half pounds of peanuts, provide 30 mg of Coenzyme Q-10.
COENZYME Q-10 & AGING
The challenge you face as you age is that your body levels of CoQ10 continue to diminish. In addition, your capability to convert CoQ10 to ubiquinol also declines. It becomes more and more difficult for you to produce the ubiquinol you need due to:
- Increased metabolic demand.
- Oxidative stress.
- Insufficient dietary CoQ10 intake.
- Deficiency of factors required for biosynthesis and ubiquinol conversion.
- Potential effects from illness and disease.

COENZYME Q-10 USES, HEALTH BENEFITS, & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE
Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant that makes your heart strong and produces energy. In the part of a cell responsible for the production of energy called mitochondria, CoQ10 plays a key role in the production of this cell. CoQ10 is synthesized in all tissues. In healthy individual normal levels are maintained both by intake and by the bodyís synthesis of Coenzyme Q10. Numerous researches and clinical trials have been conducted that demonstrate the health benefits of taking CoQ10 some of which are, improved cardiovascular function and blood circulation, reduced problems associated with poor heart function, increased energy level and less fatigue, lowered blood pressure, reduced angina, and it is a strong anti-oxidant and anti-aging nutrient. Coenzyme Q10 may also help prevent or slow Alzheimer and Parkinsonís diseases. Taking other antioxidants in addition to CoQ10 will increase health benefits. One of the best-known effects of this compound is its antioxidant qualities as well as the control it exercises on the flow of oxygen within cells, assistance with cardiovascular functioning, the production of energy, its assistance with absorption of other nutrients as well as its immune boosting properties.
In 2002 the Archives of Neurology reported that a double blind trial published that year on October 15th showed that Coenzyme Q10 appears to slow the progression of Parkinson disease (PD). This trial suggested that CoQ10 could slow the rate of deterioration in PD.
The American College of Cardiology in 2005 at the 54th Annual Scientific Session reported this finding on CoQ10: Patients with significant myopathy who are taking statin therapy have a significant decrease in myopathic pain after 30 days of supplementation with Coenzyme Q10.
Patricia Kelly, DO, Associate Professor of Medicine, University Hospital Medical Center, Stony Brook, New York also did some studies on CoQ10. The researchers conducted the present trial to determine if coenzyme Q10 supplementation would improve muscle related adverse effects in patients on statins. Dr. Kelly stated, "If Coenzyme Q10 supplementation were effective in reducing the symptoms of myopathy associated with statin use, it would be possible for patients to retain the beneficial effects of cholesterol lowering while reducing significant side effects," Pain improved in three of 20 Vitamin E patients and 18 of 21 Coenzyme Q10 patients.
Many claims are made about CoQ10. It is said to help heart failure and cancer. Some people take it to help reduce the effects certain medicines can have on the heart, muscles, and other organs. If you have heart failure, talk to your health care provider before you take any supplement. There is no strong evidence that vitamins or other supplements can help treat heart failure. They are used along with medical heart failure treatments, not instead of treatment. But you may still hear about CoQ10 supplements and heart failure. CoQ10 has not been shown definitely to relieve heart failure symptoms. Only some of the studies of coenzyme Q10 showed that it helps heart failure symptoms. In 1961, scientists saw that people with cancer had little CoQ10 in their blood. They found low CoQ10 blood levels in people with myeloma, lymphoma, and cancers of the breast, lung, prostate, pancreas, colon, kidney, and head and neck. Some research has suggested that CoQ10 helps the immune system and may be useful as a secondary treatment for cancer. CoQ10 may keep the antitumor drug doxorubicin from hurting the heart. Three studies examined the use of CoQ10 along with conventional treatment for cancer. The three studies contained a total of 41 women with breast cancer. In each study, the women improved.

COENZYME Q-10 DOSAGE INFORMATION

Coenzyme Q-10 is available in many forms, capsule, tablets, softgels and chewable form.
To improve absorption, take it with some type of oil or fat. Olive oil is the most recommended oil and peanut butter for fat.
It is also best to take your dosage with meals.
COENZYME Q-10 SAFETY, CAUTIONS, & INTERACTIONS
There are no known side effects associated with Coenzyme Q-10 when taken in normal dosages.
Taking 100 mg a day or more of CoQ10 has caused mild insomnia in some people.
Research has detected elevated levels of liver enzymes in people taking doses of 300 mg per day for long periods of time. Liver toxicity has not been reported.
In extreme doses such as 600 to 1200 mg per day have reported side effects that include rashes and skin reactions, nausea, upper abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness, sensitivity to light, irritability, headache, heartburn, and fatigue.
Medications for high cholesterol (statins) and medicines that lower blood sugar cause a decrease of CoQ10 levels and reduce the effects of CoQ10 supplements. CoQ10 can reduce the body's response to the blood thinner (anticoagulant) medicine warfarin (Coumadin) and can decrease insulin requirements in people with diabetes.
People suffering from congestive heart failure and taking Coenzyme Q-10 should NOT stop taking it suddenly since sudden withdrawal may intensify the symptoms of this disease.

A NOTE ABOUT DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS
