A NON-ESSENTIAL AMINO ACID
Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid that the body synthesizes from the Phenylalanine in your body, and is necessary for brain function. Tyrosine is a precursor of adrenaline and the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine, which stimulates metabolism and the nervous system, and regulates mood. Tyrosine acts like a mild antioxidant. It suppresses the appetite and reduces body fat. Tyrosine is a component in the production of melanin, which is the pigment responsible for hair and skin color. This amino acid aids in the function of the adrenal, thyroid, and pituitary glands. Tyrosine can be found in avocados, bananas, dairy products, lima beans, mustard greens, spinach, pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds.
Tyramine, also known by several other names, is a naturally occurring trace amine derived from the amino acid Tyrosine. Tyramine is an amino acid that helps regulate blood pressure. It occurs naturally i the body and it is found in certain foods. Tyramine acts as a catecholamine releasing agent. Tyramine acts as a catecholamine releasing agent. If you are taking an MAO inhibitor (one of a class of drugs prescribed to counter depression, lower blood pressure, and treat infections and cancer), avoid the chemical tyramine and its precursor, tyrosine. Combining MAO inhibitors with tyramine causes the blood pressure to soar and could cause a stroke. Tyramine-containing foods include almonds, avocados, bananas, beef or chicken liver, beer, cheese (including cottage cheese), chocolate, coffee, fava beans, herring, meat tenderizer, peanuts, pickles, pineapple, pumpkin seeds, raisins, sausage, sesame seeds, sour cream, soy sauce, wine, yeast extracts (including brewer's yeast), yogurt, and other foods. In general, any high-protein food that has undergone aging, pickling, fermentation, or similar processes should be avoided. Over-the-counter cold and allergy remedies should also be avoided. NATURAL FOOD SOURCES
Natural sources of Tyrosine include almonds, avocados, bananas, dairy products, eggs, lima beans, meat, pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds.
If taking a Tyrosine supplement it is best to take it at bedtime, or with a high carbohydrate meal to prevent competition of absorption with other amino acids. Folic Acid, Copper and Vitamin B-6 is a good combination to have with this nutrient to maximize absorption and effectiveness.
Persons taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, commonly prescribed for depression, must strictly limit their intake of foods containing Tyrosine and should not take any supplements containing L-Tyrosine, as it may lead to a sudden and dangerous rise in blood pressure. Anyone who takes prescription medication for depression should discuss necessary restrictions with his or her health care provider.
Tyrosine is metabolically synthesized from phenylalanine to become the para-hydroxy derivative of that important amino acid. This hydroxylated amino acid participates in the synthesis of many important biochemicals including the thyroid hormones, the melanin biological pigments, and the catecholamines, an important class of biological regulators. Tyrosine is incorporated into proteins and enzymes at the molar rate of 3.5 percent with respect to the other amino acids.
TYROSINE USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE
Supplemental Tyrosine can be used for reducing stress. Scientific studies suggest it may be helpful in combating chronic fatigue and narcolepsy. Tyrosine has also been used to reduce anxiety, depression, allergies, and the negative effects of drug withdrawal. Adding supplemental Tyrosine to the diet can also increase sex drive and eliminate headaches, and there is some evidence that suggests it can be helpful for those suffering from Parkinson's disease as well.
Tyrosine was first isolated from casein in 1849 and is abundant in insulin as well as the enzyme papain and can be synthesized from the amino acid phenylalanine in the body.
Tyrosine is a precursor of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine, which regulate mood, among other things. Tyrosine acts as a mood elevator; a lack of adequate amounts of tyrosine leads to a deficiency of norepinephrine in the brain, which in turn can result in depression. It suppresses the appetite and helps to reduce body fat. It aids in the production of melanin (the pigment responsible for skin and hair color) and in the functions of the adrenal, thyroid, and pituitary glands. It is also involved in the metabolism of the amino acid phenylalanine.
Tyrosine is used for stress reduction and may be beneficial in narcolepsy, fatigue, anxiety, depression, allergies, headaches as well as drug withdrawal. In a study, using soldiers, tyrosine proved effective in alleviating stress and keeping them more alert.
Tyrosine is a precursor amino acid that attaches to iodine atoms to form active thyroid hormones (thyroxin). Not surprisingly, therefore, a defect in this and low plasma levels of Tyrosine have been associated with hypothyroidism and an enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter), severe growth failure, and retardation of central nervous system development.
Symptoms of Tyrosine deficiency can also include low blood pressure, low body temperature (such as cold hands and feet), and "restless leg syndrome."
Tyrosine, a parent amino acid for skin, hair, and eye pigments and is involved in syndromes, known generally as oculocutaneous albinism, that are characterized by the failure to form melanin pigments, resulting in partial or complete albinism.
Supplemental L-Tyrosine has been used for stress reduction, and research suggests it may be helpful against chronic fatigue and narcolepsy. It has been used to help individuals suffering from anxiety, depression, allergies, and headaches, as well as persons undergoing withdrawal from drugs. It may also help people with Parkinson's disease.
Tyrosine and Tryptophan have with been used with some success in the treatment of cocaine abuse and in another study it was combined with the antidepressant Imipramine to treat chronic cocaine abuse where it was reported that the combination blocked the cocaine high and prevented the severe depression that accompanies withdrawal.
TYROSINE DOSAGE INFORMATION
Amino acid supplements prefaced by the letter L, such as L-Tyrosine, are more similar to the amino acids in the body than those that start with the letter D, with the exception of D-L phenylalanine, which treats chronic pain. Tyrosine supplements should be taken at bedtime or with a high-carbohydrate meal so it does not compete for absorption with other amino acids. Read and follow recommended dosages on product labels. Consult with your health care provider for therapeutic doses used to treat particular health issues.
The dosage listed is the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA), but be aware that this dosage is the minimum that you require per day, to ward off serious deficiency of this particular nutrient. In the therapeutic use of this nutrient, the dosage is usually increased considerably, but the toxicity level must be kept in mind.
Tyrosine dosage levels are not confirmed but some experiments have been performed with people taking up to 5 to 7 grams (5,000 to 7,000 mg) per day, with no confirmed toxic levels, but people taking MAO inhibitors, who suffer from high blood pressure and have problems with skin cancer should not take supplementation of L-tyrosine, and should aim to limit their intake of food sources high in this nutrient.
TYROSINE SAFETY, CAUTIONS, & INTERACTION INFORMATION
Low plasma levels of Tyrosine have been linked with hypothyroidism.
Tyrosine deficiency also can cause low blood pressure, low body temperature, and restless legs syndrome.
People taking MAO inhibitors that have been prescribed for depression need to strictly limit their intake of foods containing Tyrosine, and should not take any supplements containing this amino acid as it can lead to a sudden increase in blood pressure. Those taking medication for depression should speak with their health care practitioner regarding dietary restrictions while on medication.

A dietary supplement to support mood balance, stress management, and low thyroid function. Tyrosine is a precursor of adrenaline and the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine which regulate mood and stimulate the metabolism and nervous system. Tyrosine, found in many foods, is a 'nonessential' amino acid (protein building block), in that the body itself can also manufacture tyrosine from the amino acid phenylalanine. From this the body synthesizes several neurotransmitters, including L-dopa, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. These can have an important effect on depression and other mood disorders. Supplementation with both tyrosine and phenylalanine often leads to alertness, arousal and stress relief. Phenylalanine and tyrosine are sometimes prescribed as antidepressants, usually in combination with other nutrients and herbs that have mood elevating and stress-relieving properties. Some health care providers also recommend these amino acids for appetite control. Phenylalanine may trigger the release of an appetite-suppressing hormone in the gut called cholecystokinin. Many, but by no means all, people who take either of these amino acids notice improved alertness, arousal, and mood, and slight loss in appetite. Most people are not deficient and should not supplement with L-tyrosine, but for those with depression and related weight control problems, tyrosine may be beneficial. A health care provider should be consulted. L-tryrosine is safe to take in small amounts. Well tolerated by the most highly allergic individuals. Capsules are easier to swallow and assimilate.
