PROLINE NON-ESSENTIAL AMINO ACID
Proline is a non-essential amino acid found in cartilage. It is an essential component of collagen, and is important in maintaining youthful skin, as well as helping repair muscle, connective tissue and skin damage. Proline can be found mainly in meat sources.
NATURAL FOOD SOURCES
Proline is obtained primarily from meat sources.
Proline is one of the cyclic aliphatic amino acids that is a major component of the protein collagen, the connective tissue structure that binds and supports all other tissues. Proline is synthesized from Glutamic Acid prior to its incorporation into pro-collagen during messenger RNA translation. After the pro-collagen protein is synthesized, it is converted by post-translational modification into hydroxyproline. On a molar basis Proline is incorporated into protein at a rate of 4.2-percent with respect to other amino acids.
PROLINE USES, HEALTH BENEFITS, & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE
Proline was first isolated from casein in 1901, and unlike any of the other amino acids it is readily soluble in alcohol. It is a non-essential amino acid and can be synthesized from Glutamic Acid and does not require dietary sources.
Taking Proline supplements will help produce collagen which in turn improves skin texture and can minimize the effects of aging. This amino acid helps joints and tendons function properly, and also strengthens the heart muscles. Taking Proline and Vitamin C together promotes healthy connective tissue.
Proline improves skin texture by aiding in the production of collagen and reducing the loss of collagen through the aging process. It works with Vitamin C to promote healthy connective tissue. Collagen in the skin contains hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine, which is formed from Proline and Lysine, in which Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) seems to be important in this conversion. Collagen contains about 15-percent proline. It also helps in the maintenance and healing of cartilage and the strengthening of joints, tendons, and muscles including the heart muscle.
PROLINE DOSAGE INFORMATION
Amino acid supplements prefaced by the letter L, such as L-Proline, are more similar to the amino acids in the body than those that start with the letter D, with the exception of D-L phenylalanine, which treats chronic pain. To maximize the effectiveness of Proline, it is best to take this amino acid in conjunction with Vitamin C. For best results, read and follow product label directions for use.
There appears to be no RDA information available on Proline or dosage recommendation for proline supplementation.
According to the current information available it would be recommended that an ample supply of Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) be present to maximize the efficiency of Proline.
PROLINE SAFETY, CAUTIONS, & INTERACTIONS
Proline deficiency is not likely for adults if you have an adequate amount of protein in the diet. High levels of Proline in the blood are evident in chronic liver disease, sepsis (infection of the blood), and acute alcohol intake.
A deficiency of Proline oxidase, an enzyme that helps breakdown (metabolize) Proline, causes Hyperprolinemia Type I (HP-I).

PROLINE AMINO ACID SUPPLEMENT PRODUCTS
L-Proline is an amino acid that is essential for the synthesis of collagen, the most abundant protein in mammals. Collagen is the main structural protein that constitutes all human connective tissues, including skin, tendons, ligaments, joints, bone, and vasculature (veins and arteries). L-Proline therefore provides building blocks that help to stabilize and strengthen the structural components of the body. Although proline can be made in the body, low protein and vegetarian diets may not provide optimal support for the production of collagen.
