Proline was first isolated from casein in 1901, and unlike any of the other amino acids it is readily soluble in alcohol. It is a nonessential amino acid and can be synthesized from glutamic acid and does not require dietary sources.
Proline improves skin texture by aiding in the production of collagen and reducing the loss of collagen through the aging process. It works with vitamin C to promote healthy connective tissue. Collagen in the skin contains hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine, which is formed from proline and lysine, in which ascorbic acid (vitamin C) seems to be important in this conversion. Collagen contains about 15 percent proline. It also helps in the maintenance and healing of cartilage and the strengthening of joints, tendons, and muscles including the heart muscle.
SOURCES
Proline is obtained primarily form meat sources.
MOLECULAR DESCRIPTION
Proline is one of the cyclic aliphatic amino acids that is a major component of the protein collagen, the connective tissue structure that binds and supports all other tissues. Proline is synthesized from glutamic acid prior to its incorporation into pro-collagen during messenger RNA translation. After the pro-collagen protein is synthesized, it is converted by post-translational modification into hydroxyproline. On a molar basis proline is incorporated into protein at a rate of 4.2 percent with respect to other amino acids.
DOSAGE
There appears to be not RDA information available on proline or dosage recommendation for proline supplementation.
According to the current information available it would be recommended that an ample supply of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) be present to maximize the efficiency of proline.
PROLINE SUPPLEMENTS & PRODUCTS
L-Proline, NOW Foods, 500 mg, 120 VCaps
L-Proline is an amino acid that is essential for the synthesis of collagen, the most abundant protein in mammals. Collagen is the main structural protein that constitutes all human connective tissues, including skin, tendons, ligaments, joints, bone, and vasculature (veins and arteries). L-Proline therefore provides building blocks that help to stabilize and strengthen the structural components of the body. Although proline can be made in the body, low protein and vegetarian diets may not provide optimal support for the production of collagen. NOW® L-Proline Vcaps® are 100 percent vegetarian.
