DESCRIPTION
Worms are parasites that live in the human body, usually in the gastrointestinal tract. The most common types of worms are roundworms (including hookworms, pinworms, and threadworms) and tapeworms. Roundworms are contagious intestinal parasites that are shaped like earthworms but smaller in size. They can easily be seen with the naked eye. Pinworms are white, threadlike worms about an inch up to thirty feet and can survive for up to 25 years in the body. In the United States, pinworm infestation in young children is by far the most prevalent parasitic worm problem.

SYMPTOMS
Depending on the type of worm involved and the severity of the infestation, there may be a variety of symptoms. In some cases, there may be no perceptible symptoms at all. In other cases, worms may be seen in the stool.
- Pinworms can cause severe anal itching (especially at night, as the worms tend to migrate outside the anus to lay their eggs), insomnia, and restlessness.
- Hookworms can cause itching on the soles of the feet, and in some cases, bloody sputum, fever, rash, and loss of appetite.
- Threadworms can cause coughing or bronchitis, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and gas, preceded by tiny red abrasions that sometimes itch.
- Small tapeworms can cause weight and appetite loss, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Large tapeworms can cause similar symptoms, but usually without weight loss.
- Ascariasis, caused by ascarids, is characterized by bloating, stomach pain, vomiting, and difficulty breathing.
- Trichinosis is a disease caused by a microscopic roundworm that, if left untreated, can lead to muscle damage and cardiac or neurological complications.
Worm infestations can range from mild to severe, even life threatening, particularly in children. They result in poor absorption of essential nutrients, and in some cases, loss of blood from the gastrointestinal tract. They can therefore lead to such deficiency-related disorders as anemia and growth problems. Malabsorption resulting from parasitic infestation makes one susceptible to many disease because it results in diminished immune function.
CAUSES
Worms can be contracted through a variety of mechanisms, including improper disposal of human or animal waste, walking barefoot on contaminated soil, and ingestion of eggs or larvae from uncooked or partially cooked meat. In some cases, eggs may become airborne and be inhaled.
Parasites are more common than most people suppose, and they can be behind many illnesses, including colon disorders. They are more common in children than in adults. They are also common in people with AIDS, chronic fatigue syndrome, candidiasis, and many other disorders. Unfortunately, health care providers often do not check for worm infestations.
TYPES OF PARASITIC WORMS
Here is a list of common types of parasitic worms. This list is not complete by any means but it does give some general information about these types of parasites.
ROUNDWORM
Roundworm, also called nematode or eelworm, is any of more than 12,000 species of worms. Most kinds of roundworms live freely in soil, water, dead plants, or dead animals. Other roundworms are parasites. They live and feed on living plants and animals, which serve as hosts. Some parasitic species cause serious diseases in people, livestock, and crop plants. One species of roundworm, Caenorhabditis elegans, has proven especially valuable in biological research.
![]()
Roundworms range in size from microscopic to more than 3 feet (90 centimeters) long. They have slender, round bodies with tapered ends. Roundworms have remarkable powers of reproduction and are extremely numerous. Researchers have found more than 90,000 roundworms in a single rotting apple.
![]()
Nearly all species of roundworms reproduce by laying eggs. Some produce great quantities of eggs. For example, females of the species Ascaris lumbricoides each lay about 200,000 eggs per day for at least 10 months. In many roundworms, the eggs hatch into tiny young that look like adults. Eggs of other species hatch into young called larvae, which gradually transform into adults. Roundworms that do not lay eggs give birth to larvae.
Parasitic roundworms may infect a host in a number of ways. Some species enter the host when the host swallows food that contains the roundworm, its eggs, or its larvae. Among other species, the larva burrows into the skin of the host. In still other species of roundworms, the larva is taken up by an insect, such as a fly or a mosquito, and transmitted through the bite of that insect to the host.
At least 14 species of roundworms cause infection in human beings. A. lumbricoides, which inhabits the small intestine, infects millions of people around the world. It causes a disease called ascariasis. Symptoms of this disease include pneumonia and intestinal pain. The roundworm Trichuris trichiura infects the large intestine and occurs in millions more people worldwide. It causes trichuriasis, a disease characterized by diarrhea. Other common roundworms that cause disease in human beings include filariae, hookworms, pinworms, and trichinae.
The vinegar eel is a tiny roundworm that lives in vinegar. Vinegar eels are usually found in barrels or jars of non-pasteurized cider vinegar. They feed on fruit pulp and the bacteria that produce the vinegar from the cider. Vinegar eels are harmless when swallowed. The vinegar eel is slender and threadlike and about 1/16 inch (1.6 millimeters) long. There are separate males and females. Most female vinegar eels live about 10 months and produce as many as 45 tiny larvae, which are about 1/100 inch (0.25 millimeter) long.
Scientific classification. Roundworms make up the roundworm phylum, Nematoda.
FILARIA
Filaria is a long, threadlike roundworm that lives as a parasite in the bodies of human beings and animals. Filariae are commonly found in tropical and subtropical countries. The male worm is shorter than the female, and it has a curved tail.

The larvae (young worms) are born alive. They can be seen in the blood near the body surface of the host (the animal in which the larvae live). When a bloodsucking fly or mosquito bites an infected person, it takes up the larvae with the blood. The larvae develop in the mosquito's or fly's head near the mouth. Then when the insect bites another animal, the larvae enter the wound and infect a new host. Millions of microscopic microfilaria circulate in the blood. Those which develop into the adult form die after 5-6 years and can cause blockages in the lymphatic system of the body.
Wuchereria bancrofti is a filaria harmful to human beings. It is found in Africa, South America, and the Far East. The adult worms live in the lymph, a body fluid of the lymphatic system. When the worms block the flow of lymph, a disease called elephantiasis, or lymphatic filariasis (LF), results. This disease is characterized by severe swelling of the limbs, usually the legs and less commonly in the scrotum, arm and breast. Wuchereria bancrofti can be eliminated by controlling the mosquitoes that carry the larvae. Other kinds of filariae infect such animals as cattle and dogs.
According to the World Health Organization, LF is one of the world's top five most disfiguring and debilitating diseases. Present in over 80 endemic countries, 20 percent of the world's population is living at risk with 120 million infected and 40 million showing clinical symptoms.
Acquired early in life, LF is a disease of the poor, it is socially stigmatizing and impairs economic productivity. There is no cure for LF except for hydrocele surgery. However, it can be prevented by a two drug regime. Drugs used for this regime may include but may not be limited to Albendazole. Mectizan or Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) is used with albedazole.
Scientific classification. Filariae are members of the roundworm phylum, Nematoda.
HOOKWORM
Hookworm is a small roundworm that enters the bodies of human beings and some animals through the skin. Hookworms live as parasites in the intestines, sucking up blood and tissue fluids.
![]()
![]()
Hookworms can cause anemia (a shortage of red blood cells). They harm children more than adults. An infected child becomes weak and pale. The child's abdomen and legs may swell, and the child may become dull and listless. Certain hookworms attack animals, including cats and dogs. These hookworms can cause an itchy, red patch on human skin called creeping eruption.
Hookworm eggs pass out of the host (body in which the worm lives) with the body waste and hatch in moist, warm soil. The larvae (young worms) come to the surface of the soil. They burrow into the bare skin of animals that touch them. A person walking barefoot may pick up the worm in this way. A person may also become infected by swallowing impure food or water.
![]()
Once in the body, a hookworm enters the bloodstream and is carried to the lungs. The hookworm burrows into air channels there, passes into the throat, and is swallowed into the intestine. When hookworms reach the intestine, they become adults. Serious infections occur when there are more than 100 adult hookworms in the intestine.
Hookworm eggs and larvae can live outside of the host's body only in warm, moist places. For this reason, hookworm disease is commonly found in tropical and subtropical countries.
Improving conditions of sanitation has reduced the amount of infection by hookworms. Medical treatment with drugs is also used today. Recovery is speeded by eating foods high in protein, vitamins, and iron.
Scientific classification. Hookworms belong to the family Ancylostomidae and the roundworm phylum, Nematoda. The scientific names for the two kinds of hookworms that attack people are Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale.
PINWORM
Pinworm, also called threadworm, is a small roundworm. Pinworms are parasites. That is, they live in the body of other animals. They are about 3/8 inch (9 millimeters) long and have white bodies and pointed tails. Some pinworms infect horses and rabbits. One type, Enterobius vermicularis, commonly infects humans.
![]()
The young worms live in the upper part of the large intestine. When the females are ready to lay eggs, they crawl down the rectum and out the intestinal opening called the anus, usually at night. They lay eggs on the surrounding skin. This movement causes skin swellings and severe itching. The eggs fall off onto the bedding or clothing, or may be picked up under fingernails in scratching. If the eggs are swallowed, they reach the intestine and become adult pinworms.
![]()
Pinworms are not very harmful unless they are present in large numbers. But their eggs may infect other people or reinfect the original carrier. In some areas, 10 to 60 percent of the children may have pinworms at some time. Health care providers use drugs to treat infection caused by pinworms.
Scientific classification. Pinworms belong to the family Oxyuridae and the phylum Nematoda.
TRICHINA
Trichina is a small roundworm that causes the disease trichinosis, also known as trichinellosis. The worm is a parasite. That is, it lives in and feeds on other animals. Trichina is of the genus Trichinella, which causes trichinosis in humans from eating undercooked pork. Modern farming practices and meat inspections have made this disease rare in the United States.
![]()
The trichina infects human beings and other animals, especially rats, hogs, and bears. Most infections of trichinosis in the United States and Canada result from eating infected pork that has not been cooked enough. Trichinosis in rats, hogs, and bears usually results from eating garbage that contains infected meat.
![]()
The larvae (early form of the worms) live in microscopic cysts (sacs) in the muscles of the animals that they infect. They usually live in the animal's chest and neck muscles.
![]()
If an animal infected by the larvae is allowed to live, the cysts eventually harden, and the larvae die. But sometimes infected animals are killed for meat. In such cases, the larvae can be killed by thoroughly cooking or freezing the meat. However, if the larvae are not killed and the meat is eaten, the larvae are freed from the cysts during digestion. The larvae attach themselves to the intestine of the individual who eats the meat. They become adult worms in about 3 or 4 days. The largest are only about 1/4 inch (6 millimeters) long.
![]()
The adult females burrow into the wall of the intestine, where they produce large numbers of larvae. The larvae enter the blood and are carried to many parts of the body. They eventually leave the blood and form new cysts in the muscles.
![]()
Some people carry trichina worms in their bodies for many years and never have severe symptoms. But in other people, the worms irritate the intestine and cause diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. When they pass through the blood, fever, headache, and muscular pain occur. After they reach the muscles, they cause swelling of the face and other parts and bleeding under the skin. The worms may form their cysts in the diaphragm (chief muscle used for breathing) and make breathing painful. The disease occasionally is fatal.
Trichinosis is a disease caused by eating undercooked meat, which contains cysts of Trichinella spiralis. Trichinella spiralis can be found in pork, bear, fox, rat, horse, and lion meat. Wild animals, especially carnivores (meat eaters) or omnivores (animals that eat both meat and plants) should be considered a potential risk if eaten by humans.
The prevention of trichinosis involves several steps. Garbage containing meat scraps may carry trichina worms, so it should be cooked before it is fed to hogs. Meat packers should freeze pork to kill any worms the pork may carry. Finally, cooks should be sure the central section of pork is held at a temperature of at least 137°F (58°C) for 5 minutes or more.
Scientific classification. The trichina is in the trichina family, Trichinellidae. Its scientific name is Trichinella spiralis.
WHIPWORM
The human whipworm (Trichuris trichiura or Trichocephalus trichiuris), is a roundworm, which causes trichuriasis when it infects a human large intestine. The name whipworm refers to the shape of the worm; they look like whips with wider "handles" at the posterior end.
![]()
The nematode Trichuris trichiura, also called the human whipworm. The adult female measures about 35-50 mm in length, and the male about 30-45 mm.

Life Cycle
The unembronated eggs are passed with the stool (1). In the soil, the eggs develop into a 2-cell stage (2), and advanced cleavage stage (3), and then they embryonate (4); eggs become infective in 15 to 30 days. After ingestion (soil-contaminated hands or food), the eggs hatch in the small intestine, and release larvae (5) that mature and establish themselves as adults in the colon (6). The adult worms (approximately 4 cm in length) live in the cecum and ascending colon. The adult worms are fixed in that location, with the anterior portions threaded into the mucosa. The females begin to oviposit 60 to 70 days after infection. Female worms in the cecum shed between 3,000 and 20,000 eggs per day. The life span of the adults is about 1 year.
Geographic Distribution: The third most common roundworm of humans. Worldwide, with infections more frequent in areas with tropical weather and poor sanitation practices, and among young children. It is estimated that 800 million people are infected worldwide. Trichuriasis occurs in the southern United States.
Symptoms Include:
- Light infestations are frequently asymptomatic.
- Heavy infestations may have bloody diarrhea.
- Long-standing blood loss may lead to iron-deficiency anemia.
- Rectal prolapse is possible in severe cases.
Infection occurs through accidental ingestion of eggs (which are usually found in dry goods such as beans, rice, and various grains) and is more common in warmer areas. The eggs hatch in the small intestine, and then move into the wall of the small intestine and develop. On reaching adulthood, the thinner end (the front of the worm) burrows into the large intestine and the thicker end hangs into the lumen and mates with nearby worms. The females can grow to 50 mm (2 inches) long. Neither the male nor the female has much of a visible tail past the anus.
Whipworm infestation is detectable by stool examination, which can detect eggs and charcot-leyden crystals. Mebendazole is 90 percent effective in the first dose, and albendazole may also be offered as an anti-parasitic agent. Adding iron to the bloodstream helps solve the iron deficiency and rectal prolapse.
Whipworm commonly infects patients also infected with Giardia, Entamoeba histolytica, Ascaris lumbricoides, and hookworms. Infection can be avoided by proper disposal of human feces, not eating dirt, and not eating crops fertilized with night soil.
SCHISTOMES
Schistosomiasis is caused by five species of schistomes:
- Schistosoma mansoni
- Schistosoma japonicum
- Schistosoma haematobium
- Schistosoma mekongi
- Schistosoma intercalatum
It is a chronic debilitating disease affecting an estimated 200 to 300 million people in 79 countries. About 600 million are thought to live in endemic areas. Schistosomiasis is primarily a rural disease associated with daily activities related to water use, such as farming, fishing, bathing, recreation, washing clothes and kitchen utensils, and personal hygiene. However, urban and peri-urban transmission of schistosomiasis is becoming a serious problem in some developing countries, due in part to the migration of infected persons from the countryside to areas of the cities or their suburbs that do not have adequate sanitary and health care facilities. Thus, the disease may have probably escaped detection in many localities where health services and disease surveillance are not well developed. Other factors contributing to the changing endemicity pattern of the disease include increasing irrigation projects, intensive water resources development activities and environmental destabilization.
![]()
Fresh water snails of the genus Biomphalaria, Bulinus and Oncomelania serve as species specific intermediary host of the parasites. The infective larvae penetrate the skin of humans who enter snail infested water. Thus infection does not require physical contact between man and snail.
The onset of the disease may be characterized by itching and rash, sometimes by shortness of breath and cough and on rare occasions by a fatal immunological reaction known as Katayama syndrome. The disease has two forms; urinary schistosomiasis caused by S. haematobium and intestinal schistosomiasis caused by the other four species. The former has a conspicuous early symptom of blood in the urine, and is as a result of major pathologic lesions in the walls of the urinary bladder often extending to the ureter, kidney, urethra and genitalia. It is accompanied by incontinence, and constant and increasing pain upon urination. There is also lower abdominal pain, bladder colic and weakness. Intestinal schistosomiasis is characterized by major pathological lesions of the intestine, particularly the colon, cecum and rectum as a result of worm-eggs passing through or calcifying in the tissues. Dysentery, accompanied by abdominal pain, enlargement of spleen and liver as well as arterial obliteration in the lungs are symptoms of severe cases.
Schistosomiasis control strategies have shifted away from the elimination of infection or interruption of transmission toward control of the human disease with chemotherapy. Snail host control should be a supportive part of an integrated control activities. The best strategies must be community-based and should include primary health care, especially as relating to health education, food and nutrition, water supply and sanitation, maternal and child health and drug distribution.
ANISAKIS
Anisakis is a genus of parasitic nematodes, which have a life cycle involving fish and marine mammals. They are infective to humans and cause Anisakiasis, and fish which have been infected with Anisakis spp. can produce an anaphylactic reaction in people who have become sensitized to Immunoglobulin E (IgE).
![]()
Life Cycle
Complex life cycle of Anisakis worms. Anisakis spp. have a complex life cycle which passes through a number of hosts through the course of its life. Eggs hatch in sea water and larvae are eaten by crustaceans, usually Euphausids. The infected crustacean is subsequently eaten by a fish or squid and the nematode burrows into the wall of the gut and encysts in a protective coat, usually on the outside of the visceral organs, but occasionally in the muscle or beneath the skin. The life cycle is completed when an infected fish is eaten by a marine mammal, such as a whale, seal, or dolphin. The nematode excysts in the intestine, feeds, grows, mates and releases eggs into the sea water in the host's feces. As the gut of a marine mammal is functionally very similar to that of a human, Anisakis spp. are able to infect humans who eat raw or undercooked fish.
The known diversity of the genus has increased greatly over the past 20 years, with the advent of modern genetic techniques in species identification. It has been discovered that each final host species is home to its own biochemically and genetically identifiable sibling species of Anisakis spp., which is reproductively isolated. This finding has allowed the proportion of different sibling species in a fish to be used as an indicator of population identity in fish stocks.
Anisakids share the common features of all nematodes; the vermiform body plan, round in cross section and a lack of segmentation. The body cavity is reduced to a narrow pseudocoel. The mouth located anteriorly, and surrounded by projections used in feeding and sensation, with the anus slightly offset from the posterior. The Squamous epithelium secretes a layered cuticle that protects the body from digestive juices.
As with all parasites with a complex life cycle involving a number of hosts, details of the morphology vary depending on the host and stage of life cycle which it is in. In the stage which infects fish, Anisakis are found in a distinctive watch-spring coil shape. They are roughly 2 cm long when uncoiled. When in the final host, Anisakids are longer, thicker and more sturdy, to deal with the hazardous environment of a mammalian gut.
Anisakids pose a risk to human health in two ways: through infection with worms from the eating of under-processed fish, and through allergic reactions to chemicals left by the worms in fish flesh.
Anisakiasis is the disease caused by infection with Anisakis worms. It is frequently reported in areas of the world where fish is consumed raw, lightly pickled or salted. The areas of highest prevalence are Scandinavia (from cod livers), Japan (after eating sushi and sashimi), the Netherlands (by eating infected fermented herrings [Maatjes]), and along the Pacific coast of South America (from eating ceviche). Heating to 60°C, or freezing to below -20°C is an effective method of killing Anisakis.
Within hours after ingestion of infective larvae, violent abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting may occur. Occasionally the larvae are coughed up. If the larvae pass into the bowel, a severe eosinophilic granulomatous response may also occur 1 to 2 weeks following infection, causing symptoms mimicking Crohn's disease.
Diagnosis can be made by gastroscopic examination during which the 2 cm larvae are visualized and removed, or by histopathologic examination of tissue removed at biopsy or during surgery.
Humans are thought to be more at risk of Anisakiasis from eating wild fish than farmed fish.
Many countries require all types of fish with potential risk intended for raw consumption to be previously frozen to kill parasites.
Allergic Reactions
Even when thoroughly cooked, Anisakis pose a health risk to humans. Anisakids (and related species such as the sealworm, Pseudoterranova spp., and the codworm Hysterothylacium aduncum) release a number of biochemicals into the surrounding tissues when they infect a fish. They are also often consumed whole, accidentally, inside a fillet of fish.
People who are sensitized to nematodes can have severe anaphylactic reactions after eating fish which have been infected with Anisakis spp. This is often confused with a fish or shellfish allergy, as the allergenic components of Anisakids are difficult to test for and often produce a reaction in tests for other allergens.
Treatment: For the worm, humans are a dead-end host. Anisakis and Pseudoterranova larvae cannot survive in humans and eventually die. Treatment therefore in the vast majority of cases is symptomatic, with a heavy dose of re-assurance. The only indication for treatment is small bowel obstruction due to Anisakis larvae, which may require emergency surgery, although there are case reports of treatment with albendazole alone (avoiding surgery) being successful.
Occurrence: Larval anisakis are common parasites of marine and anadromous fish, and can also be found in squid and cuttlefish. In contrast, they are absent from fish in waters of low salinity, due to the physiological requirements of Euphausids, which are needed to complete their life cycle. Anisakids are also uncommon in areas where cetaceans are rare, such as the southern North Sea.
TAPEWORM
The cestodes (tapeworms), class Cestoda, are parasitic tapeworms. Two cestodes are Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm) and Taenia solium (Pork tapeworm). T. saginata may measure 9 meters (27 feet), whereas T. solium may reach 6 meters (18 feet). Taeniasis occurs when raw or undercooked unfrozen beef (T. saginata) or pork (T. solium) are eaten. T.solium can also cause cysticerosis.
![]()
Life Cycle of Taenia saginata and Taenia solium
Humans are the only definitive hosts for Taenia saginata and Taenia solium. Eggs or gravid proglottids are passed with feces (1); the eggs can survive for days to months in the environment. Cattle (T. saginata) and pigs (T. solium) become infected by ingesting vegetation contaminated with eggs or gravid proglottids (2). In the animal's intestine, the oncospheres hatch (3), invade the intestinal wall, and migrate to the striated muscles, where they develop into cysticerci. A cysticercus can survive for several years in the animal. Humans become infected by ingesting raw or undercooked infected meat (4). In the human intestine, the cysticercus develops over 2 months into an adult tapeworm, which can survive for years. The adult tapeworms attach to the small intestine by their scolex (5) and reside in the small intestine (6). Length of adult worms is usually 5 meters or less for T. saginata (however it may reach up to 25 meters) and 2 to 7 meters for T. solium. The adults produce proglottids which mature, become gravid, detach from the tapeworm, and migrate to the anus or are passed in the stool (approximately 6 per day). T. saginata adults usually have 1,000 to 2,000 proglottids, while T. solium adults have an average of 1,000 proglottids. The eggs contained in the gravid proglottids are released after the proglottids are passed with the feces. T. saginata may produce up to 100,000 and T. Solium may produce 50,000 eggs per proglottid respectively.
Geographic Distribution: Both species are worldwide in distribution. Taenia solium is more prevalent in poorer communities where humans live in close contact with pigs and eat undercooked pork, and is very rare in Muslim countries.
All tapeworms are parasitic, without sense organs, mouths, or digestive tracts. Since they live in the intestine of their host, they can absorb nutrients directly through their body.
![]()
The tapeworm consists of a scolex (head) and proglottids (body sections). The oldest proglottids are at the posterior end of the worm. Each proglottid contains reproductive organs. Tapeworm eggs can be fertilized by either cross-fertilization or self-fertilization.
![]()
The beef tapeworm, Taenia saginatum, is one species able to infect humans. Human waste disposal and meat inspections today work against the life cycle of the beef tapeworm.
![]()
Beef Tapeworm Life Cycle:
- Cattle eat grass contaminated with proglottids and eggs.
- Larvae hatch and bore through the cow's intestine into the blood.
- The larvae then burrow into muscle tissue and form cysts.
- Humans become infected when they eat meat that has not been cooked sufficiently to kill the bladder worms inside the cysts.
- Once the cysts are inside the human intestine, the cyst wall dissolves releasing the bladder worm.
- This worm attaches itself to the intestine wall and grows to maturity.
- The sperm and eggs inside each proglottid producing fertilized eggs.
- Proglottids break off and are eliminated with the host's feces, completing the cycle.
GENERAL PREVENTION & TREATMENT
It is becoming general knowledge in both the medical and natural health community that approximately 85 percent of the world population has various parasites living deep inside them, and very often more than one at a time. People are no more immune in the United States than anywhere else.
Eradicating parasites from the human population begins with educating the public about where each type of parasite comes from, and how to prevent picking up the parasite in the first place. For example, there are thousands of different types of roundworms and these roundworms are transmitted in several ways. Most types of roundworms are found in the soil. Since humans typically acquire roundworms through the soil, good hygiene is a main way to prevent a parasitic infestation.
Many people have heard of a terrible affliction called elephantiasis, an extreme swelling and thickening of the skin caused by a roundworm you can "catch" from a mosquito bite (but it is extremely rare in North America). Therefore, avoiding mosquito bites in tropical regions of Asia, Africa, South America, etc. will help you avoid the roundworm that is responsible for elephantiasis.
A third example is the trichinella spiralis roundworm, which is transmitted by eating undercooked or raw pork and wild game. Once the trichinella spiralis roundworm moves into your body, the infection is called trichinosis. Trichinosis starts in the intestines where it causes a stomach ache, heartburn, and other stomach-related ailments. Later, as trichinosis spreads to other parts of the body, it triggers more symptoms like headache, joint pain, muscle pain, and fever. The best way to prevent trichinosis is by cooking wild game meat and pork meat thoroughly, until juices run clear.
PARASITES IN CHILDREN
Parasites in children are no fun; they create havoc in the intestine causing various medical issues to occur. Some parasites live in the bowels and can reside there for a long time before being detected; they tend to multiply at a rapid rate and can spread up into the stomach cavity causing parasite infestation in children.
The parasites that infiltrate children occur when the conditions are unsanitary, the children may consume dirty drinking water, eating unwashed fruits and vegetables and playing with infected pets, Children are easy prey to parasites since they enjoy playing outside and in the dirt, they are not fond of washing their hands so, all the little peaky parasite just await to infiltrate their bodies.
There are over 100 types of parasites, but there are these common types that seem to bother children and cause parasite infestation in them:
- Trichinae which causes trichinosis and is usually found in the intestine. Trichinae is the same worm that is found in pigs. They are round in shape and causes intestinal disorders and other factors such as fevers and muscle ache, when eating pork ensure that it is cooked thoroughly.
- The whipworm is usually in the large intestine where infection occurs when there is an accidental swallowing of the eggs, hook worms are intestinal parasites which causes mild diarrhea and other stomach ailments.
- Roundworms or nematodes parasites that occupy in the intestine and can be contracted through the skin or accidental ingesting. These worms live off other organism in the body and multiply by causing infection then, go on to leave their waste in the intestine, this is the start of symptoms leading to greater problems.
- Hookworm is a small round worm the infiltrates the small intestine and lungs. They usually enter the body through the skin or by ingesting the lava. However, the chances of contracting hookworm in the US are uncommon due to the advance sanitary conditions.
- Tapeworms are one of the parasitic family that needs a host to continue multiplying. Tapeworms are both male and female and are able to produce and fertilize their own eggs. They live in the small intestine and once they start multiplying they migrate through the intestine wall and lodges into the body cavity causing parasite infestation in children
Symptoms of parasite infestation includes leaky gut syndrome, where food is leaking through the intestinal wall into the body and causing serious illness. It also causes different types of bowel problems from constipation to diarrhea, lack of energy, anemia, and anal itching. Lets not forget the abnormal weight issues that occur both loosing and gaining.
PARASITE CLEANSING
As the statistics show, the vast majority of us carry around parasites without even knowing it. Most parasite-evicting prescription medicine targets one or two types of parasites and contains very harsh chemicals which produce heavy side effects.
In order to rid the body of parasites it is best to do a semi annual parasite cleanse of the body.
In order to eradicate the infestation an eight week parasite cleanse is recommended and for children two weeks.
It is best if children practice washing their hands after playing outside and before they eat.
Pets that are infected should be treated immediately as the pose a threat to children.
The use of pills and liquid medicine are available to start the process of treatment. Most times it helps to use two products when cleansing since many times there are more than on parasite infecting the person.
CONSIDERATIONS
Worm infestation can be persistent and stubborn. It may be necessary to treat all members of the household to finally eradicate the parasites. All family members should be examined for possible infection. In addition, it is a good idea to compile a list of people who have been in close contact with the affected individual and advise them to seek the evaluation and advice of a health care provider.
The following are the routes through which different types of worms can enter the body:
- Ascarids: Through the soil; or in contaminated raw or undercooked meat.
- Hookworms & Threadworms: Through the feet or drinking water.
- Pinworms: Eggs can be transferred by touch from an infected individual that has eggs on the fingers from scratching the affected area.
- Tapeworms: In raw or undercooked beef, fish, or pork, or through inadvertently swallowing infested fleas or lice that live on pets.
Health care providers treat most types of worms with prescription medications such as mebendazole (Vermox) or thiabendazole (Mintezol), or with pyrantel pamoate (Antiminth), which is available over the counter. Creams or ointments may be prescribed to relieve anal itching and irritation.
Some sushi has been found to be contaminated with a worm-like parasite called anisakis, which can cause illness similar to Crohn's disease if ingested. This parasite is a tightly coiled, clear worm, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch in length. It commonly embeds itself in herring and other fish. Fortunately, an experience sushi chef can spot this parasite easily, so its presence in sushi is relatively rare.
The risk of parasitic infection is increased by travel to place with inadequate public sanitation, personal hygiene levels, and/or food handling practices.
Because of the generalized nutritional deficiencies associated with this disorder, good nutrition is vital. Foods high in protein and iron are particularly important.
