DESCRIPTION
Rosacea, commonly spelled Rosecea and Roseacea, is a chronic skin, acne-like condition of the facial skin that may affect as many as 13 to 14 million Americans as of 2008.
Rosacea typically first appears when people reach their 30s and 40s as a flushing or subtle redness affecting the forehead, nose, cheekbones, and chin that comes and goes. Groups of capillaries close to the surface of the skin become dilated, resulting in blotchy read areas with small bumps and, sometimes, pimples. As the condition progresses, the redness becomes more persistent, bumps and pimples called papules and pustules appear and small dilated blood vessels may become visible. Eventually these may become permanent if blood vessels under the skin become dilated, a phenomenon known as telangiectasia. The skin tissue can swell and thicken, and may be tender and sensitive to the touch. In some cases the eyes also may be affected, causing them to be irritated and bloodshot. In the advanced cases, the nose may become red and swollen from excess tissue. Fair-skinned people between the ages of 30 and 60 are most likely to develop rosacea. More women than men are affected by rosacea, however, the condition tends to be more severe in males.
The inflammation of rosacea can look a great deal like acne, but it tends to be more chronic, blackheads and whiteheads are almost never present. It is a fairly common disorder - about 1 in every 20 Americans has it to some degree - but many never realize they have it. There is no cure for rosacea, but there are some very effective treatments that can greatly decrease symptoms.
SYMPTOMS
Rosacea usually begins with frequent flushing of the face, particularly the nose and cheeks. The flushing is caused by the swelling of the blood vessels under the skin. This "red mask" can serve as a flag for attention. Excessive facial flushing, pimples, red lines on the face, swollen bumps on the nose and irritated eyes appear. Inflammation can then spread across the face and small bumps may appear. However, it can take years from the beginnings of this condition before the later stages develop.
Later, swelling of the nose may occur (called rhinophyma) characterized by a bulbous, enlarged red nose and puffy cheeks (like the old comedian W.C. Fields). Rhinophyma occurs mainly in men. Severe rhinophyma can require surgical repair. Some people falsely attribute the prominent red nose to excessive alcohol intake, and this stigma can cause embarrassments to those with rosacea. Although a red nose may be seen in people with heavy alcohol use, not very person with rosacea abuses alcohol.
Rosacea may or may not affect the eyes. Not everyone with rosacea has eye issues. A complication of advanced rosacea, known as ocular rosacea, affects the eyes. About half of all people with rosacea report feeling a persistent burning, dryness, and a feeling of grittiness of the eyes (conjunctivitis) or inflamed and swollen eyelids and light sensitivity. Often the eye symptoms may go completely unnoticed and not be a major concern for the individual. Many times, the health care provider or ophthalmologist may be the first one to notice the eye symptoms. Untreated, ocular rosacea may cause a serious complication that can damage the cornea, called rosacea keratitis. An ophthalmologist can assist in a proper eye evaluation and prescribe rosacea eye drops. Severe, untreated eye rosacea may cause permanent damage, including impaired vision.
Rosacea is often mistaken for severe acne. Some people may notice their skin becoming more sensitive to soaps and facial products just prior to developing symptoms of rosacea.
CAUSES
The underlying causes of rosacea are not understood and is not known, but the condition may be the result of a combination of overactive blood vessels, inflammation and infection.
The presence of tiny mites (Demodex folliculorum) found in hair follicles and on the skin may also increase the risk of developing rosacea.
The bacteria Helicobacter pylori (that is associated with stomach ulcers), gastrointestinal disease, and medications that cause blood vessels to widen may be associated with rosacea.
There seems to be a hereditary component in some people.
Rosacea can be triggered by certain factors are known to aggravate the condition, including:
- The consumption of alcohol, hot liquids, and/or spicy foods.
- Exposure to sunlight and sun-damaged skin is generally associated with rosacea.
- Changes in the weather like strong winds or a change in humidity.
- Extremes of temperature, hot baths and hot weather.
- Exercise.
- The use of makeup and skin care products containing alcohol.
- Stress, fear, anxiety, embarrassment and emotional factors.
- Vitamin deficiencies can be a contributing factor.
- Infection can be contributing factor.
- Some people notice flare-ups around the holidays, particularly Christmas and New Year's holidays.
The things that aggravate one person's rosacea may have no effect on another person.
RISKS OF DEVELOPING ROSACEA
Rosacea is most common in white women between the ages of 30 and 50. When it does occur in men, rosacea tends to be more severe, and is usually accompanied by rhinophyma (a nose that becomes chronically red and enlarged). Fair skinned individuals seem to be more susceptible to this condition than darker skinned people. People who flush easily seem to be more prone than others to develop rosacea.
COMPLICATIONS
In rare cases, rosacea may affect the skin in other parts of the body as well as the face. It is not a dangerous condition, but it is chronic and can be distressing for cosmetic reasons. Without proper care, it can develop into a disfiguring condition.
TREATMENT
Individuals who suspect they may have rosacea may wish to see a dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment. Several medications are available by health care provider's prescription that control redness and reduce the number of papules and pustules. Some are applied to the skin (topically) and others are taken by mouth (orally). Different types can be used in combination. In most cases, it may take several weeks to see results. Once symptoms have cleared, patients may need to continue taking medication to keep rosacea under control.
Controlling the causes of flushing and blushing can help prevent rosacea from getting worse and blood vessels from getting larger. But once red lines appear, they can only be covered up by makeup or removed by a surgical method. Surgery can also be used to correct a nose enlarged by rhinophyma.
Without regular treatment, redness and pimples can return. Studies of patients who stopped treatment after their symptoms were successfully cleared show that rosacea came back in many of the patients within a week to 6 months. It is important to avoid anything that may cause flushing, which makes rosacea worse.
Following a regular cleansing and medication routine will make treatment easier and more successful. Use only very mild products on the face, and avoid products that contain alcohol or irritants. Apply a quality moisturizer as needed. When using with a topical medication, apply the moisturizer after the medication has dried. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.
CONVENTIONAL MEDICAL TREATMENTS FOR ROSACEA
There are some forms of rosacea that may be significantly cleared using laser, intense pulse light, photodynamic therapy, or isotretinoin (Accutane). Although still not considered a "cure," some patients experience long-lasting results and may have remissions (disease-free period of time) for months to years.
Since there is some overlap between acne and rosacea, some of the medications may be similar. Acne and rosacea have in common several possible treatments including (but not limited to) oral antibiotics, topical antibiotics, sulfa-based face washes, isotretinoin, and many others. It is important to seek a health care provider's advice before using random over-the-counter acne medications since they can actually irritate skin that is prone to rosacea. Overall, rosacea skin tends to be more sensitive and easily irritated than that of common acne.
TREATMENT CHOICES FOR ROSACEA
There are many treatment choices for rosacea depending on the severity and extent of symptoms. Available medical treatments include antibacterial washes, topical creams, antibiotic pills, lasers, pulsed-light therapies, photodynamic therapy, and isotretinoin.
Mild rosacea may not necessarily require treatment if the individual is not bothered by the condition. More resistant cases may require a combination approach, using several of the treatments at the same time. A combination approach may include home care of washing with a prescription sulfa wash twice a day, applying an antibacterial cream morning and night, and taking an oral antibiotic for flares. A series of in-office laser, intense pulsed light, or photodynamic therapies may also be used in combination with the home regimen. It is advisable to seek a health care provider's care for the proper evaluation and treatment of rosacea.
TOPICAL CREAMS
With the proper treatment, rosacea symptoms can be fairly well controlled. Popular methods of treatment include topical (skin) medications applied by the patient once or twice a day. Topical antibiotic medication such as metronidazole applied one to two times a day after cleansing may significantly improve rosacea. Azelaic acid (Finacea gel 15 percent) is another effective treatment for patients with rosacea. Both metronidazole and azelaic acid work to control the redness and bumps in rosacea.
Some patients elect combination therapies and notice an improvement by alternating metronidazole and azelaic acid: using one in the morning and one at night. Sodium sulfacetamide (Klaron lotion) is also known to help reduce inflammation. Other topical antibiotic creams include erythromycin and clindamycin (Cleocin).
ORAL ANTIBIOTICS
Oral antibiotics are also commonly prescribed to patients with moderate rosacea. Tetracycline, doxycycline, minocycline, and amoxicillin are among the many oral antibiotics commonly prescribed and they actually help reduce inflammation and pimples in rosacea. The dose may be initially high and then be tapered to maintenance levels. Common side effects and potential risks should be considered before taking oral antibiotics.
Short-term topical cortisone (steroid) preparations of minimal strength may in occasional cases also be used to reduce local inflammation. There is a risk of causing a rosacea flare by using topical steroids. Some health care providers may prescribe tretinoin (Retin-A) or isotretinoin, prescription medications also used for acne, or permethrin (Elimite) cream, which is also used for the mites that cause scabies.
ISOTRETINOIN
Isotretinoin has been prescribed to patients with severe rosacea. However, close health care provider monitoring and blood testing are necessary while on isotretinoin.
CLEANSERS
In addition, prescription or over-the-counter sensitive skin cleansers may also provide symptom relief and control. Harsh soaps and lotions should be avoided, whereas simple and pure products such as Cetaphil or Purpose gentle skin cleanser may be less irritating. Patients should avoid excessive rubbing or scrubbing the face.
LASER & INTENSE PULSED LIGHT
Many patients are now turning to laser and intense-light treatments to treat the continual redness and noticeable blood vessels on the face, neck, and chest. Often considered a safe alternative, laser and intense pulse-light therapy may help to visibly improve the skin and complexion.
Laser treatment may cause some discomfort. While most patients are able to endure the procedure, ice packs and topical anesthetic cream can help alleviate the discomfort. Multiple treatments are typically necessary and the procedure is not covered by most insurances. Treatments are recommended in three- to six-week intervals; during this time, sun avoidance is necessary. Risk, benefits, and alternatives should be reviewed with your health care provider prior to treatment. Laser treatments may be combined with photodynamic therapy (light-activated chemical using Levulan) for more noticeable results.
PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is one of the newly available treatments. PDT uses a topical photosensitizer liquid that is applied to the skin and a light to activate the sensitizer. Levulan (aminolevulonic acid) and blue light, commonly used to treat pre-cancers (actinic keratosis) and acne vulgaris, can also be used to treat some rosacea patients. The use of PDT in rosacea is considered off-label use to some extent, since it is primarily designed for regular acne. PDT is thought to work at reducing the inflammation, pimples, and also improving the skin texture. PDT is an in-office procedure performed in your health care provider's office. The treatment takes anywhere from one to one and a half hours to complete. Strict sun avoidance for approximately one to three days is required after the treatment. Mild discomfort during the treatment and a mild to moderate sunburn appearance after the treatment is common. Some patients have experienced remissions (disease free periods) of several months to years from these types of treatments. Other patients may not notice significant improvement.
GLYCOLIC PEELS
Glycolic-acid peels may additionally help to improve and control rosacea in some patients. The chemical peels can professionally be applied for approximately two to five minutes every two to four weeks. Mild stinging, itching, or burning may occur and some patients experience peeling for several days after the peel. Any peel can irritate very sensitive skin and cause flares for some patients.
SUN PROTECTION
Sun exposure is a known flare for some rosacea sufferers. Sun protection using a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreens are generally encouraged. Because rosacea tends to occur in mostly fair-skinned adults, the use of an appropriate daily sunscreen lotion and overall sun avoidance is recommended. Zinc-based sunscreens (SPF 30 or higher) may provide adequate sun protection.
TREATMENT OF TELANGIECTASIAS (THE RED LINES)
Telangiectasias are the small blood vessels that arise on the surface of the skin, commonly on around the nose, cheeks, and chin. Simple cover-up makeup can be used for the telangiectasias. There are some green-based moisturizers or tinted foundations that may help conceal the redness. Telangiectasias can also be medically treated in your health care provider's office with a small electric needle, a laser, intense pulse light, or minor surgery to close off the dilated blood vessels.
Usually, multiple treatments are required for best results and only a portion of the blood vessels may be improved with each treatment. Not everyone responds the same to these types of treatments, and your health care provider can help you decide which treatment is best for your skin type, condition, and size of blood vessels.
TREATMENT OF RHINOPHYMA
Rhinophyma of the nose is frequently treated by surgery. The excess tissue may be removed with a scalpel, laser, or electro surgery. Dermabrasion can help improve the look of the scar tissue. Follow-up treatments with laser or intense pulsed light may help lessen the redness. Medical maintenance therapy with oral and or topical antibiotics may be useful to decrease the chance of recurrence.
PROGNOSIS
Rosacea may affect your life minimally, moderately, or severely depending on how active the condition is and your overall tolerance of the skin symptoms. Some patients have absolutely no symptoms and are not bothered at all by their rosacea. They may enjoy perfectly healthy normal lives without any effect from this benign skin condition. Some patients really like the pink glow to their cheeks and find it gives them a pleasant color without having to use blush. They may not even know they have rosacea. They usually do not want to use any treatment.
People with moderate rosacea may have periodic flares that require treatment with oral antibiotics, lasers, and other therapies. They may continuously take an antibiotic daily for years and years to keep their symptoms under control. Many of these people may complain of embarrassment from the flushing and blushing of rosacea. They may have ups and downs and times that their disease is quiet and other times when it feels like it is on fire. With the help of their health care provider, these patients can learn the pattern of their rosacea and develop a treatment plan to keep it from interfering in their daily lives.
Other patients have very bothersome rosacea that causes them issues on a daily basis. There are a subset of severe rosacea sufferers who have extreme psychological, social, and emotional symptoms. Some have developed social phobias causing them to cancel or leave situations when their rosacea is flaring or active. Some patients complain of looking like they have been drinking alcohol when in fact they don't drink at all. Although rosacea is not a grave medical situation, severe cases may wreak havoc in some patient's lives. It is important for these patients to discuss their physical and emotional concerns with their health care providers and to get professional help in treating their rosacea.
Overall, promptly diagnosed and properly treated, rosacea should not prevent people with the condition from enjoying long and productive lives.

TANNINS FOR WEEPING LESIONS
Weeping dermatitis lesions may be dried and healed by applications of tannins. The bark and leaves of both alder and oak contain these anti-inflammatories, which help to relieve symptoms and ease itching by drying the pus and tightening the skin. Pour 1 cup of water over 1 tablespoon of alder or oak bark or leaves, and bring to a boil; steep for 10 minutes. Next, strain and cool the mixture. Dip a cloth in it and place it on the affected areas until symptoms abate.
To relieve itching and promote healing, mix Goldenseal root powder with Vitamin E Oil, then add a little honey until it is the consistency of a loose pasted. Apply this mixture to the affected area.
Gotu Kola contains powerful antioxidants and promotes the formation of lipids and proteins that are essential for healthy skin.
Grapeseed Extract Contains oligomeric proanthocyanadins (OPCs), which reduce inflammation and rid the body of toxins.
Oregon Grape root detoxifies the body and reduces inflammation.
Wild Pansy (Viola Tricolor) can be used externally to treat bruises and various skin ailments. It is especially good against psoriasis and acne and can be used on eczema and cradle cap in infants.
Those with seborrheic dermatitis can benefit from taking Dandelion, Goldenseal, and Red Clover. Caution: Do not take Goldenseal on a daily basis for more than one week at a time, and do not use it during pregnancy. If you have a history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or glaucoma, use it only under a health care provider's supervision.
White Oak bark tea can be used as a rinse for treating seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp and to stop hair loss.
Hop root decoction can be used for treating seborrheic dermatitis. This can be made by boiling 2 tablespoons of hop roots to a pint of water and applied externally as a hair tonic. An ointment can be made by boiling 2 parts of Jimson weed (stramonium) and 1 part hops, in lard (or another ointment base such as olive oil). This is applied to the scalp for relief of skin irritation and itching skin.
Black Indian hemp juice made from the fresh leaves can be applied to the scalp to treat scalp dermatitis.
Nettle water is an excellent wash used to clear up irritated skin. Boiling the entire plant in a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar makes a good hair lotion. Combing the hair with expressed Nettle juice is supposed to stimulate hair growth.
Make a decoction of an ounce dried Burdock root to a pint and half of water. Boil this down to 1 pint. Take a wine glassful dose 3 to 4 times daily. This decoction has been used as a wash for scaly skin disorders. The use of this remedy must be continue over a relatively long time for it to be effectual.
An infusion of fresh Rosemary made with boiling water and allowed to cooled until warm, makes a good final rinse to help clear the scalp.
One ounce each of Rosemary and Sage infused for 24 hours in a pint of water makes a pleasant hair tonic that can be used on dandruff. After infusion, strain the liquid and add a teaspoon of powdered Borax.
Soak 2 tablespoons Fenugreek seeds in water overnight. In the morning grind into a fine paste. Apply all over scalp and leave for 1/2 hour. Wash with Shikakai or mild shampoo.
Using Lime Juice for washing hair is often beneficial.
The use of curd kept over 2 to 3 days, Lime Juice, Apple Cider Vinegar and Indian Gooseberry (Amla) juice also helps to disperse dandruff.
Boil a handful of Neem leaves in a quart of water. Rinse hair with cooled and filtered solution.
Massage your hair with warm Coconut Oil and apply the juice of 2 Lemons, steam your hair and leave on oil for about 2 hours. Shampoo with a mild shampoo. This should be done 2-3 times a week.

HOLISTIC RECOMMENDATIONS
NUTRITIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ROSACEA & SKIN PROBLEMS
A nutrient-rich diet is essential for skin. Eat a diet consisting of that emphasizes raw fruits and vegetables and grains, organically grown if possible. The diet should consist of 50 to 75 percent raw vegetables and fresh fruits, in particular, leafy green vegetables, carrots and salads, and whole grains. Eat soured products such as yogurt.
A diet should be high in essential fatty acids, such as flax seed, fish or evening primrose oils which can improve skin.
Add brown rice and millet to your diet.
Supplement important nutrients such as beta carotene at 25,000-50,000 IU per day and zinc at 30-60 mg per day may help improve general dermatitis over time. These nutrients are necessary to form new skin cells and prevent the entry of bacteria, fungi, and pathogens into the cells.
Dietary supplements are frequently recommended to help deter rosacea. Take B-complex vitamins and hydrochloric acid regularly (avoid HCl if you have problems with ulcers or gastric reflux). Follow label directions. Alfalfa and Burdock Root (see Herbs above) also have detoxifying properties and can help to improve skin tone.

The Benefit of Juices & Berries
Both apple and dark grape juices may be beneficial for those suffering from rosacea. These fruit juices protect and help repair blood vessels, so try to include them in your diet. It is best to drink the beverage between meals and at room temperature. Or, eat brightly pigmented berries, such as blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, purple grapes, cherries, and cranberries.
Avoid fats, especially saturated fats, and all animal products. Saturated fats promote inflammation. Also avoid alcohol, caffeine, cheese, chocolate, cocoa, dairy products, eggs, fat, fish, salt, sugar, and spicy foods.
Reduce common food allergens such as wheat, corn, dairy, dairy, sugar, citrus, caffeine, chocolate, tomatoes and potatoes, as well as chemicals, preservatives and flavorings. Investigate the possibility of food allergies. Keep a food diary for one month to see which foods may be aggravating the condition. Then avoid those foods.
MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Allergies
Avoid fried foods and hydrogenated and animal fats, strawberries, sugar, white flour, chocolate, nuts, and processed food. These contribute to skin problems.
Do not eat foods containing raw eggs, which contain avidin, a protein that binds biotin and prevents it from being absorbed. Biotin is needed for skin and scalp disorders.
Sensitivity to gluten is widespread, although it is often unrecognized. Research has shown that people suffering from virtually all skin disorders do better if they eliminate foods containing gluten and all dairy products from the diet. Try a gluten-restricted (gluten-free) diet for 6 weeks, then add gluten-containing foods back to the diet one at a time, and see if the condition changes. A gluten-free diet is often of therapeutic benefit in controlling dermatitis. See Celiac Disease for recommended diet.
Follow a fasting program once a month.
OTHER SKIN CARE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ROSACEA
Keep the skin scrupulously clean, but treat it gently. Use a mild soap or gentle cleanser twice a day and lukewarm to cool (never cold or hot) water for cleansing. Over-washing may cause irritation. Pat the skin dry after washing. Do not rub it. Avoid touching the skin except when cleansing it.
A sunscreen lotion is advisable each morning. Your health care provider may prescribe a topical antibiotic to use once or twice a day under your sunscreen.
Avoid smoking, spicy foods, hot drinks, and alcohol as they may cause flushing.
Avoid extremes in temperatures (hot and cold), especially heat. Keep baths and showers short, and use water that is as cool as you can tolerate comfortably. Avoid saunas (including the type used for facials and steam inhalations), steam baths, and hot tubs. If you need to increase the humidity in your home, use only a cool mist humidifier.
As much as possible, avoid wearing make-up. Some cosmetics and hair sprays may aggravate redness and swelling. If you do use cosmetics, choose all-natural, water-based products. Facial products such as soap, moisturizers, and sunscreens should be free of alcohol or other irritating ingredients. Moisturizers should be applied very gently after any topical medication has dried. When going outdoors, suncreens with a SPF of 15 or higher are needed.
Do not use topical steroid (cortisone medications) creams. These only make the condition worse. They promote the widening of the tiny blood vessels of the face. Some people experience severe rosacea flares after prolonged use of tropical steroids.
Rubbing the face tends to irritate the reddened skin. Friction is extremely irritating, so avoid wearing tight clothing such as turtlenecks that can rub against the skin. Be careful about anything that comes close to or into contact with your face. Even holding the telephone receiver against your face for a while can raise the local temperature and irritate sensitive skin.
In severe cases, a laser or electrical device can be used to remove the excess tissue. Dermabrasion also has helped some people with rosacea.
GENERAL DERMATITIS EFFECTING SKIN AND SCALP RECOMMENDATIONS
Check with your herbalist, health care provider or dermatologist before using general dermatitis remedies for rosacea. Some of these can help, other are for other forms of skin ailments.
For dermatitis of the scalp, make a strong, concentrated tea of Rosemary, Comfrey, Tea Tree Oil (add the Tea Tree Oil after the tea is made), dried Nettles, and Witch Hazel, and apply it to the scalp after shampooing with a fragrance-free shampoo. Leave it on the scalp for 10 or 15 minutes.
Tea Tree Oil destroys bacteria and fungi and prevents germs from penetrating inflamed skin. Add 8-10 drops of tea tree oil to 2-3 cups of warm water, dip a cloth in it and place the cloth on the affected area for 15 minutes. Repeat many times daily.
Massage Tea Tree Oil Antiseptic Cream into the skin after each contact with water or irritants.
Keep the colon clean. Growing evidence supports a link between skin conditions and bowel function. An intestinal ailment may allow incompletely digested compounds, proteins or toxins to be absorbed by the blood, where they can trigger inflammatory reactions. Bacteria, aspirin, medications, and chemicals may disrupt the normal intestinal absorption process and contribute to skin disorders. Thus, treating bowel function can improve dermatitis, even in those without obvious digestive complaints. Employ an intestinal detoxification plan for several months by supplementing acidophilus, lactobacillus and fiber and eating a whole-food diet. Use a fiber supplement such as flaxseed, psyllium husk, or Aerobic Bulk Cleanser (ABC) from Aerobic Life Industries daily. Use occasional cleansing enemas for removing toxins for quicker healing. Note: Always take supplemental fiber separately from other supplements and medications.

Try keeping your house humidified and take fewer showers or baths. Showers and baths deplete the skin of its natural oils.
Before washing your hair, add about 8 tablespoons of pure organic Peanut Oil to the juice of half a lemon and rub the mixture into your scalp. Leave the mixture on for 5 to 10 minutes, or longer if your condition is acute, then shampoo.
Try rinsing your hair with apple cider vinegar and water instead of plain water after shampooing. Use 1/4 cup vinegar to 1 quart of water.
Dermatitis can be due to nutritional deficiencies. It is recommended a person gets adequate amounts of vitamins B-6, B-12, Essential Fatty Acids and selenium in their diet.
Skin and scalp problems may be triggered by a deficiency in essential fatty acids (EFAs), which are required to produce every cell in the body. EFAs are not made by the body; instead they must be supplied through your diet. Flaxseed Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, and Black Currant Oil are all excellent sources and will help relieve inflammation, itching and flaking. Take 1 tablespoon of any of these oils daily.

Use a perfume-free moisturizing lotion daily.
Zinc is highly effective in treating dandruff. Zinc is critical to cell regeneration. Several anti-dandruff shampoos contain zinc pyrithione which seems to be very good at clearing the problem. A zinc supplement, 15-30 mg taken daily is excellent for the skin and hair. When used in conjunction with a zinc based shampoo, the problem of dandruff should be kept at bay.
Another supplement being used in skin care is beta-carotene, which is also claimed as being extremely beneficial to the hair and scalp. Beta-carotene is essential for healthy skin. It is a antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, which help reduce scalp irritation. Take 10,000 IU of beta-carotene daily.
Selenium can be found in several shampoo products is highly effective in controlling dandruff. The shampoo should be left on at least five minutes before being thoroughly rinsed. The hair and scalp should be shampooed with this type of shampoo at least once a week. Shampoo containing selenium should not be used on a daily basis, even if it aids in controlling dandruff. The antioxidant selenium aids in controlling a dry, flaking and itching scalp. Take between 200 and 1,000 mcg daily.
Certain essential oils are said to help control flaking. After washing your hair, mix a few drops of Rosemary and Lemon essential oils into a little Sweet Almond oil. Massage into your scalp and brush your hair with a soft brush.
Peppermint essential oil is often an effective remedy for dry, flaky or itchy skin. When diluted. peppermint oil can be applied to the skin every 2 hours.

ANTI-DANDRUFF HERBAL RINSE
To make an effective herbal rinse that alleviates flaking, combine a handful each of dried Calendula tops, dried Rosemary and dried Nettle tops. Place the mixture in a 2 quart glass jar and cover with 1 quart of organic Apple Cider Vinegar. Let the rinse steep for 1 month; then strain. To improve the scent, add a few drops of an essential oil, such as Rose or Lavender. Apply the rinse to your scalp after shampooing and leave it in. If you find the rinse too strong, dilute it by mixing 1-2 tablespoons of rinse in 1 cup of water.
Boric acid is a very old remedy for treating dandruff, and is freely available at any drug store or pharmacy. Moisten with a little water and rub well into the scalp, then rinse out thoroughly with warm water. This should be carried out just before you shampoo your hair in the normal way.
Colloidal Silver solution can be used as a scalp rinse.
HerbalRemedies: Colloidal Silver Liquid, SilvaSolution, 10 ppm, 16 fl. oz.
HerbalRemedies: Colloidal Silver Liquid, SilvaSolution, Super Strength Pro 50, 8 fl. oz.
Mineral Clay absorbs bacteria and dead skin cells. Mineral clay stems inflammatory skin reactions. Mix French, bentonite or other clay powder with water to form a paste. Stir the clay with warm water until a paste forms and apply the paste to the skin in a 1/8 inch-thick layer. Clay should only be placed directly on the skin when it is unbroken without fissures or rawness. Leave on for 30 minutes; then rinse thoroughly with warm water. A poultice is made by dipping a cloth in the clay-water mixture and placing it on the skin until dry. Mineral clay is readily available at health food stores and online. (see link above)
If antibiotics are prescribed, take extra B-complex vitamins. Also take an acidophilus supplement to replace the "friendly" bacteria that are destroyed by antibiotics.
Do not pick or scratch the skin or scalp. Make sure to wash your hair frequently, and use a non-oily shampoo. Use natural hair products that do not contain chemicals. Avoid using irritating soaps and greasy ointments and creams. Over-the-counter ointments can do more harm than good.
If dermatitis is persistent or symptoms seem to be getting worse, consult with your health care provider. A dermatologist may possibly prescribe lotions that cleanse and dry with sulfur and resorcin or Deprosone cream.
Foods For Health - A dry and flaky skin and scalp can simply be the result of not drinking enough water. Getting a minimum of 10 glasses of pure water daily will moisten the skin and may also treat dandruff. Coffee, tea, juice and sodas do not count as water and may be, in fact, quite dehydrating.
HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR GENERAL DERMATITIS

CONSIDERATIONS
There is no known cure for rosacea. Topical and/or oral antibiotics, usually tetracycline, are often prescribed to keep the inflammation under control. As with any drug, these can have side effects, especially with long term use. Moreover, if you stop taking the antibiotics, the condition may rebound. More information is available from:

An underlying vascular disorder may be involved in the development of rosacea. Several findings support this theory. First, there are structural abnormalities in the small blood vessels in the facial skin of people with rosacea. Second, the condition is exacerbated by the use of drugs that dilate blood vessels, such as theophylline and nitroglycerin. Finally, people with rosacea are more likely than most to suffer from migraines, a type of headache also linked to vascular malfunction.
MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Migraine
Demodex folliculorum, a type of microscopic mite that lives on cast-off skin cells is normally present on human skin, has been found in significantly higher than normal numbers in skin samples taken from people with rosacea. Researchers speculate that this organism, or some type of reaction to it, may be involved in rosacea.
Do not use bubble bath products if you have general dermatitis problems. Chemicals used in bubble bath products may cause dermatitis and may even irritate the tissues of the lower urinary tract sufficiently to cause bloody urine. This is most likely to occur if you soak in treated bathwater for too long.
