PREGNANCY RELATED DISORDERS INTRODUCTION
Many women find being pregnant a thoroughly enjoyable experience and suffer very few unpleasant symptoms, but there are those who discover that pregnancy can lead to some uncomfortable effects. Very few of these incidental discomforts threaten either the fetus or the expectant mother - but the more enjoyable a pregnancy, the better for both mother and child.
Pregnancy last for approximately 40 weeks. This is commonly divided into three periods, or trimesters:
- 1st Trimester: From the first day of the last menstrual period to week 12 weeks.
- 2nd Trimester: From week 12 to week 28.
- 3rd Trimester: From week 28 until delivery.
Most of the discomforts that occur during pregnancy are the result of hormonal changes within the body, nutritional deficiencies, and profound anatomical changes. This page addresses some of the most common pregnancy related problems and provides further links for more information. Natural remedies are offered as well as helpful hints and suggestions for maintaining maximum health during pregnancy. For a healthy pregnancy and birth, it is necessary to consult and work with a qualified health care provider and/or midwife. It is also wise to work with your midwife or health care practitioner on a birth plan. This allows you to decide in advance what you want and what you would choose from among your options before, during, and after labor.

ANEMIA
During pregnancy, blood volume (the amount of blood circulating in the body) increases by about 40 percent. The increase in volume is largely due to an increase in plasma (the liquid part of the blood) rather than in red (or white) blood cells. Plasma volume, then, is increasing faster than red blood cell volume. The protein hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to the body's cells, inhabits red blood cells. Because there is a decreased proportion of hemoglobin, the result can be anemia.
Anemia is most likely to develop in the second trimester of pregnancy. It can cause fatigue, a rapid heartbeat, and paleness of the skin, gums, and around the inside of the eye. There may be cravings to eat substances other than food, such as coal, dirt, starch, or hair. This is called pica and is normally the sign of a nutritional deficiency.
Anemia is unlikely to affect the developing baby. The fetus depletes the mother's iron resources and does not usually suffer any deficiency itself. Midwives and health care providers often recommend a diet designed for pregnancy and supplemental prenatal vitamins and minerals to help prevent nutritional deficiencies.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Make sure you have enough folic acid, vitamin B-12, and other B-complex vitamins in your diet.
Eat foods rich in iron, such as leafy green vegetables, prunes, raisins, organically raised red meat and liver, and bread and pastas made from whole-grain flour. Blackstrap molasses is also rich in iron and can be taken in water or milk (a spoonful stirred up in liquid and consumed).
If your midwife or health care provider prescribes iron supplements, take them with vitamin C to help the absorption of this mineral. Iron supplements can also cause constipation, so eat plenty of high-fiber foods and increase your fluids intake. Note: Do not take iron supplements unless anemia has been diagnosed.
See the following links for helpful information about anemia and nutritional recommendations for dietary supplements, herbs and other holistic remedies. Do not take any supplement or use any therapy without consulting with your midwife. Some recommended supplements (nutritional and herbal) may not be used during pregnancy.

ASTHMA
Many women who have asthma reduce their use of asthma medication when they become pregnant to avoid harming the fetus - and as a result, their asthma symptoms may become worse. It currently appears that there is more danger to a developing fetus from frequent asthma attacks than from taking asthma medications. Inhaled medications are normally preferred during this time because they are more localized in action. Asthma sufferers should be checked out at least every 4 to 6 weeks by an allergist or health care provider specializing in asthma during pregnancy. Your should discuss your medications in detail with your midwife or health care provider.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Avoid anything that might trigger an attack. Keep your bedroom, at least, as a place you can go to relax and get away from any airborne pollutants that can trigger an attack.
The Air Supply personal air purifier from Wein Products is a miniature unit that is worn around the neck. It sets up an invisible, pure air shield against microorganisms (such as viruses, bacteria, and mold) and microparticles (including dust, pollen, and pollutants) in the air. It also eliminates vapors, smells, and harmful volatile compounds in the air.
See the following links for helpful information about asthma and nutritional recommendations for dietary supplements, herbs and other holistic remedies. Do not take any supplement or use any therapy without consulting with your midwife. Some recommended supplements (nutritional and herbal) may not be used during pregnancy.

BACKACHE
Backache is common during pregnancy due to the considerable anatomical changes and stresses in the body. The increase in body weight, the muscle-relaxing effects of the hormone progesterone, and the shift in one's center of gravity contribute to the problem.
RECOMMENDATIONS
To minimize back pain during pregnancy, do not stay in any one position for a long period of time.
Pay attention to your posture. Keep your shoulders relaxed and your back straight as possible at all times.
Swimming is a good way to relieve the strain on the back and on all other parts of the body.
Include 2 to 3 minutes of gentle stretching exercises in your daily routine (such as yoga stretches for pregnancy). Do not strain - stretch only to your comfort level.
Make sure your mattress is firm enough to support you, and sleep with a pillow supporting your back. Sleep on your side, not on your back. This is especially important in later pregnancy when blood supply may be compromised by laying on your back by the expanding uterus pressing on the vessels that run down your spinal region.
Do not wear high-heeled shoes. High heels throw your body off balance and put extra strain on your back. Instead, wear well-fitting, well-padded flat or low-heeled shoes that support your feet and provide ample room for your toes. Be aware that you may require larger shoes than normal while you are pregnant.
Teach your partner or friends how to massage your back. You can use liniments or herbal oils.
Learn how to move and lift correctly, putting less pressure on the back.
When your back hurts, try soaking a small towel in cider vinegar. Squeeze off any excess and lie down on your side in bed. Spread the towel directly across your back. Relax this way for 15 to 20 minutes.
See the following links for helpful information about backache and nutritional recommendations for dietary supplements, herbs and other holistic remedies. Do not take any supplement or use any therapy without consulting with your midwife. Some recommended supplements (nutritional and herbal) may not be used during pregnancy.

BLADDER DISCOMFORT & INFECTION
During pregnancy, the bladder is pressed upon by an expanding uterus and must, in general, deal with far more fluids. You may need to urinate more frequently. However, the bladder may not always empty fully, so infections of the bladder are common. These should always be treated.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Avoid sugary foods. Infectious bacteria thrive on sugar.
Increase your fluid intake. Drink plenty of bottle or filtered water rather than tap water. Do not cut back on liquids because of urinary frequency.
Eat plain natural yogurt every day and/or take an acidophilus supplement. This helps to maintain the correct balance of natural "friendly" bacteria in the system.
Wear cotton underwear. Avoid wearing anything tight or containing synthetic material next to your skin.
Do not douche (unless instructed by your midwife).
See the following links for helpful information about bladder infections and nutritional recommendations for dietary supplements, herbs and other holistic remedies. Do not take any supplement or use any therapy without consulting with your midwife. Some recommended supplements (nutritional and herbal) may not be used during pregnancy.

BLEEDING GUMS
During pregnancy, increasing estrogen levels cause gums to swell and become somewhat softer than normal, and the circulation of blood to them increases. This makes the gums more prone to bleeding and infection, especially if good oral hygiene is not maintained.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Be sure your diet contains enough calcium and high quality, complete proteins such as soy products.
Increase your intake of foods rich in vitamin C, as a deficiency in this vitamin can contribute to bleeding gums.
If you smoke, quit - preferably before you get pregnant. Cigarette smoking reduces the oxygen supply to the developing fetus and also drains vitamin C from the body.
Brush your teeth 3 or 4 times daily (remembering to rinse your mouth well), and massage your gums with clean fingers when necessary. Floss your teeth daily.
See your dentist at least once during the pregnancy and be sure to inform the dentist that you are pregnant. Do not permit him or her to take any dental x-rays while you are pregnant.
See the following links for helpful information about bleeding gums and dental care and nutritional recommendations for dietary supplements, herbs and other holistic remedies. CONSTIPATION
Hormonal changes during pregnancy have a relaxing effect on the muscles, including those of the digestive tract. The increasing level of progesterone in your system makes the bowels less efficient. The normal rhythmic contractions of the intestines slow down, and the result can be constipation. This happens most often in the third trimester.
RECOMMENDATION
Eat fresh and dried fruit such as prunes, raisins, and figs.
Eat fresh vegetables and salads containing a variety of raw green and colored vegetables daily.
Increase the amount of fiber in your diet. Whole-grain breads, cereals, and bran are helpful. Begin by taking 2 teaspoons of bran in a glass of apple juice twice daily. The bran may cause some gas until your system is used to it, but after that you should not have any difficulty.
Drink ten 8-ounce glasses of liquid, including water, each day.
Walk at least a mile a day.
Set a regular time each day for a bowel movement. This is very helpful for digestion and elimination. Elevate your feet and legs during elimination to relax the anal muscles.
If your midwife or health care provider prescribes iron supplements, be aware that they can cause constipation. Increase your fluid intake and eat a diet high in fiber.
Do not take over-the-counter laxatives unless specifically recommended by your health care provider or midwife.
See the following links for helpful information about constipation and hemorrhoids and nutritional recommendations for dietary supplements, herbs and other holistic remedies. COUGHS & COLDS
Coughs and colds are more common during pregnancy and are often more difficult than usual to shake off. Once you have a cold, there is little you can do but let it run its course, so prevention is most important.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Eat a healthy diet and increase your consumption of foods containing vitamin C.
For congestion, make a steam inhaler using essential oil of Eucalyptus, Lavender, or Lemon.
See the Common Cold link (below) for additional information and recommendations. you can use any of the external remedies mentioned, but consult with your health care provider or midwife before taking nutrients or other supplements internally.

DEPRESSION
Depression is fairly common during pregnancy (and postpartum). It can come and go, but because of shifting hormone levels, it is not uncommon to experience at least one bout of depression at some point during the 40 weeks of pregnancy. Mood swings are common too. It is not unusual to find that you are more emotional and volatile during pregnancy. It helps if people around you are sympathetic to this and know what to expect.
Do not continue to feel depressed without seeking help. Having someone to talk to and knowing that you are not alone in experiencing these feelings can help you to cope during times of depression. Sit down and talk with your midwife about things that are bothering you. She will be able to explain what is happening to you and your body and may help you with suggestions for coping with things.
Acupuncture has been used successfully for hundreds of years to treat depression.
Exercise and fresh air can help to lessen depression. Exercise can help release those "feel good" endorphins and fresh air will help give you an extra boost of oxygen and a change of scenery.
Be open about your fears and concerns relating to having a child. Pregnancy and childbirth are profound experiences, and many women (and their partners) experience feelings of anxiety about the responsibilities attached to this event. Pregnancy is a complicated emotional experience, and you should be aware that it is normal not to be happy all the time.
If you become pregnant while taking antidepressants, consult your prescribing health care provider about the possible effect on the development of the fetus. Consult your midwife and have both your health care provider and your midwife try to work together as a team to help you with your depression issues. You should not stop taking your medication without discussing it with your health care provider and midwife.
See the following links for helpful information about depression and nutritional recommendations for dietary supplements, herbs and other holistic remedies. Do not take any supplement or use any therapy without consulting with your midwife. Some recommended supplements (nutritional and herbal) may not be used during pregnancy.

DIABETES, GESTATIONAL
Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that occurs only during pregnancy. It affects 3 to 5 percent of pregnant women. It occurs because insulin, which regulates blood sugar, does not work as effectively during pregnancy due to hormones secreted by the placenta. Blood sugar can become high, and although this condition rarely causes harm to the mother, the baby's birth weight often increases, and the baby may be born with a low blood sugar level (hypoglycemia). A problem may arise if the baby's birth weight is excessive enough to make delivery complicated. Macrosomia (heavy birth weight), a potential complication, is defined as a birth weight over 9 lbs 14 ounces.
Conventional medical practices normally test women for blood sugar levels around the 28th week of pregnancy. However, many midwives prefer to test women only if they need it (such as when they have glucose showing up in their urine, a raised level of blood glucose or other indications of potential glucose-related problems, such as a family history of diabetes). Midwives are also more likely to work closely with their pregnant clients to make sure their diet is healthy and well balanced.
The 50-gram screen (gestational diabetes screening) involves drinking a glass of very sweet liquid containing 50 grams of sugar and testing the blood sugar level one hour later to see how your body has processed the sugar. Many midwives use a "jelly bean" test, which is easier for women to consume and results in less side effects than the conventional glucose drink, but has the same test results. Symptoms of gestational diabetes may include frequent urination, excessive thirst, and increased fatigue, but it is also likely that there will be no symptoms at all.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Eat a little at a time, but frequently, perhaps 6 to 8 small (snack-size) meals throughout the day. Do not miss meals, even if you are experiencing nausea. Keep your meals and snacks healthy. Frequent small meals will help keep the blood sugar on a more level concentration instead from shifting from high to low and low to high often seen with big infrequent meals.
Discuss your dietary intake with your midwife or health care provider. Your midwife may be able to sit down with you and help you plan out a healthy, blood sugar stable diet to fit your needs. If not, you may be referred to a dietary specialist for consultation. (See Gestational Diabetes Diet recommendations below).
Avoid foods rich in sugar, and remember that some carbohydrates increase blood sugar levels more than sugar. (See diabetes link below). Avoid junk foods and other unhealthy dietary habits.
If a baby is born with low blood sugar, sweet drinks can alleviate the condition. The baby's blood sugar level should return to normal within hours. The mother's blood sugar also should return to normal after delivery.
If the baby is too large, your midwife or health care provider may recommend delivering your baby early, possibly by a cesarean section, if needed.
See the following links for helpful information about gestational diabetes, diabetes and hypoglycemia and nutritional recommendations for dietary supplements, herbs and other holistic remedies. DIZZINESS
During pregnancy, especially during the second trimester, blood pressure often drops as the expanding uterus presses on major blood vessels. The blood supply also has extra work to do, and at times the blood may pool in the lower part of the body, leaving the brain a bit short of oxygen for brief moments. These factors can cause dizziness.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Do not change positions quickly. Always go from lying down to sitting to standing slowly. Take your time and focus on what you are doing.
If you have to stand for long periods, keep moving and flexing your muscles to make sure the blood is circulating properly.
Do not take hot baths or showers. If the weather is hot, get in somewhere cool.
If you feel dizzy, sit down somewhere safe. Try lowering your head to your knees until the feeling passes.
If you have diabetes, make sure your blood sugar level is well controlled.

ECLAMPSIA & PREECLAMPSIA
Preeclampsia (also known as toxemia of pregnancy) is a complication of pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure, edema (swelling due to fluid retention), and an excess of protein in the urine. It may develop in the second half of pregnancy or later. The cause is not known, but if you have suffered from this complaint during a prior pregnancy, you are at increased risk of having it again in following pregnancies. Other risk factors include multiple births, kidney disease, diabetes, lupus, long-term high blood pressure, and heredity. A poor diet may contribute to developing preeclampsia/eclampsia. A small percentage of women who develop preeclampsia go on to develop eclampsia, with seizures and/or coma.
It was once thought that eclampsia and preeclampsia were a result of toxemia - the presence of some sort of toxin or poison in the bloodstream - but it is now known that this is not the case. If you develop any of the symptoms of preeclampsia, you must be monitored constantly by your midwife or health care provider.
NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS
The following nutrient dosages given below are for adults.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Get adequate rest. Rest is vitally important if you develop this condition.
Make sure you have a healthy balanced, nutritional pregnancy diet with sufficient quality protein and salt to taste (for expanding blood volume during pregnancy). See nutrition and preeclampsia/eclampsia links below for more information.
Make sure that your midwife or health care provider is aware of any risk factors you may have for preeclampsia.
CONSIDERATIONS
If you develop high blood pressure without any of the other symptoms of preeclampsia, your midwife or health care provider may recommend treatment for high blood pressure.
Because the cause is not known, there is no specific treatment for eclampsia except delivery of the baby.
See the following links for helpful information about preeclampsia/eclampsia and nutritional recommendations for dietary supplements, herbs and other holistic remedies. ECTOPIC PREGNANCY
An ectopic pregnancy, sometimes called a tubal pregnancy, is a situation in which a fertilized egg becomes implanted in a fallopian tube rather than in the uterus. The result is that the pregnancy is not viable because there is not room enough for the fetus to grow. This can happen if the fallopian tube is blocked due to inflammation, scar tissue, or endometriosis, making it impossible for the egg to pass into the uterus. Other possible causes of ectopic pregnancy include anatomical abnormalities such as a misshapen fallopian tube.
The easiest way to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy, after a pelvic examination, is to measure levels of chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced by the placenta that increases in quantity until the end of the first trimester. If the hCG level is not increasing, a health care provider or midwife may decide that the pregnancy is not proceeding as it should and order more tests, such as an ultrasound, to find out where the fetus is growing.
CONSIDERATIONS
There is no known way to salvage an ectopic pregnancy. The fetus must be removed to preserve the life of the woman. This is usually done surgically and laparoscopically.
You are more at risk for this condition if you have had a previous ectopic pregnancy. Discuss this risk with your midwife or health care provider.
See the following links for helpful information and recommendations about ectopic pregnancy.

EDEMA (SWELLING) OF HANDS AND FEET
The rise in estrogen in the body during pregnancy increases the tendency to retain fluids. This can cause some swelling of the hands and feet, and is considered normal - but it must be monitored continually because it may be an indication of a more serious condition called preeclampsia.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Early in pregnancy, remove any rings you wear on a regular basis. Do not wait, or the rings may have to be cut off.
As soon as you notice you hands, legs, or feet getting puffy or larger than usual, tell your midwife or health care provider. While some swelling is acceptable, the condition should nevertheless be evaluated by a prenatal professional, as edema can also be the first sign of preeclampsia, a potentially serious complication of pregnancy.
Avoid salt and all highly processed foods, while maintaining a well-balanced, high-protein diet. Do not take diuretics (water pills).
Wear loose, comfortable clothing and properly fitting shoes. You may require larger shoes than normal. Once the baby arrives, your feet will return to normal.
When you are relaxing, sit with your fee elevated.
Walk one mile each day. This helps to keep edema under control.
See the following links for helpful information about edema and nutritional recommendations for dietary supplements, herbs and other holistic remedies. Do not take any supplement or use any therapy without consulting with your midwife. Some recommended supplements (nutritional and herbal) may not be used during pregnancy.

GAS (FLATULENCE)
Gas, like other digestive upsets, is a common complaint during pregnancy. Even foods that cause no difficulties at other times may begin to cause trouble.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Keep a food diary to help you determine which foods, or combination of foods, see to be causing the gas. Avoid any suspect foods.
You may have to adapt your usual diet during pregnancy. Many foods you liked before may suddenly seem unappealing.
Eat 4 to 6 small meals a day, instead of 3 big meals. Chew your food slowly and well. Do not overtax your digestive system.
Eat 4 or more servings of fresh fruits and vegetables every day.
Cook vegetables quickly using a perforated steamer instead of boiling them for long periods of time.
Drink as much quality water (not tap water) as you can.
Get adequate exercise. Walking is an excellent way to alleviate gas.
To reduce gas-causing sulfur compounds in beans (garbanzo, pinto, navy, and so on), use the following cooking method: Place 1 cup of beans in 5 cups of water and bring them to a boil. Boil the beans for 1 minute. Then drain them and add 5 cups of fresh water. Bring the water to a boil and continue cooking the beans according to directions. Cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli can also cause flatulence.
When eating potentially gas-inducing foods, take the enzyme product Beano with the first bite. This should help to eliminate the problem.
See the following links for helpful information about gas (flatulence) and nutritional recommendations for dietary supplements, herbs and other holistic remedies. Do not take any supplement or use any therapy without consulting with your midwife. Some recommended supplements (nutritional and herbal) may not be used during pregnancy.

GROIN SPASM, STITCH, OR PRESSURE
When the rough ligaments connecting the corners of the uterus to the pubic area kink and go into spasm, it feels like a "stitch" on the right side. In the later months of pregnancy, lower groin pressure may develop.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Exercise daily, using exercises recommended by your health care provider or midwife. This can help alleviate this condition.
During spasms, breathe deeply and bend toward the point of pain in order to allow the ligament to relax. Rest in bed on one side until the spasm is over.
Beginning in the second trimester, some women experience a sharp shooting pain, which runs from their hip down the buttocks and the back of the leg. This pain is called Sciatica. It is caused from the weight of the uterus on the sciatica nerve. To relive the pain, try wearing a maternity belt. This will help lift the uterus off the nerve. Also, try lying on your left side to relive any pressure the uterus is putting on the nerve. Lying on your left side also helps with circulation and oxygen flow to the baby.

HEARTBURN
Heartburn occurs more often than normal during pregnancy. This is because the expanded size of the uterus promotes the reentry of stomach fluids into the esophagus, and hormones present during pregnancy tend to soften the sphincter muscles. As your baby grows inside you, and organs get pushed around to make room for baby, there is less room in your body to digest foods. Your stomach may produce more acids to digest the foods you eat.
RECOMMENDATIONS
To ease heartburn during pregnancy, try eating small frequent meals throughout the day. This will make it easier for your body to digest the foods you eat.
Try to avoid any foods that you know upset your stomach.
To prevent heartburn, do not consume spicy or greasy foods, alcohol, coffee, baking soda, or antacids containing sodium bicarbonate (such as Alka Seltzer).
Remain active and upright, especially after meals.
To relieve discomfort, try using Acid-Ease or chewable papaya tablets. These products contain natural plant enzymes and can be taken with meals and/or between meals, as needed. They are safe to use and effective for reducing heartburn.
When heartburn strikes, try drinking a glass of warm soymilk or rice milk.
Do not eat or drink anything except water fro a few hours before going to bed or taking a nap.
A high-carbohydrate diet can help if heartburn is a problem.
Check with your midwife or health care provider about taking an antacid to relieve any symptoms you may have.
See the following links for helpful information about heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and nutritional recommendations for dietary supplements, herbs and other holistic remedies. HEMORRHOIDS
Hemorrhoids are common during pregnancy. A number of factors contribute to the development of hemorrhoids, including constipation and the pressure exerted by the uterus as the fetus gains in size and weight.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Increase your intake of roughage (fiber). Eat plenty of raw vegetables, fruits, dried fruits, bran, and whole-grain breads. These fiber-rich foods help to soften stools and make elimination easier. Hard stools can be very painful to pass and cause bleeding.
Drink ten 8-ounce glasses of liquid each day, including water, juices, and herbal teas.
Use cold witch hazel compresses to help shrink hemorrhoids.

INSOMNIA
Insomnia is very common during the last weeks of pregnancy when finding a comfortable sleeping position is difficult. Needing to get up to urinate can disrupt a night's sleep. Deficiencies of the B vitamins also can cause insomnia. The emotional changes that accompany pregnancy often contribute to sleep difficulties as well.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Increase your intake of foods rich in the B vitamins.
Take a warm (not hot) bath with a soothing oil (such as Lavender) added to the water.

Do not force yourself to sleep if you are not really tired. Read, meditate, or do something else non-strenuous until you feel sleepy.
Try drinking a cup of hot herbal tea with honey or lemon before bed or in the middle of the night. Herbal teas such as Chamomile, Marjoram, Lemon Balm, and Passion Flower are known for their sleep-inducing qualities. Caution: Do not use Chamomile on an ongoing basis, as ragweed allergy may result. Avoid it completely if you are allergic to ragweed. Marjoram is safe when used in moderation as a culinary herb, however, avoid the over use of marjoram as it is a uterine stimulant when used in high doses.

LEG & MUSCLE CRAMPS
Leg and muscle cramps during pregnancy are often a result of nutritional deficiencies, electrolyte imbalances, and/or circulatory changes, in addition to the strain placed on the legs by the extra weight.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Increase your calcium and potassium intake by eating foods such as almonds, bananas, grapefruit, low-fat cottage cheese, oranges, salmon, sardines, sesame seeds, soy products (such as tofu), and low-fat yogurt to help avert leg cramps. Adequate calcium is also needed to help prevent high blood pressure and for fetal development.
While sleeping or sitting, elevate your legs so that they are higher than your heart.
Do not stand in one place for too long. Shift your weight from one leg to the other every few minutes.
Do not point your toes.
Walk at least a mile every day to stimulate the circulation of blood through the legs.
Make sure your levels of calcium, magnesium, and potassium are correctly balanced. It is often easier to take a single formula that contains all three minerals in the correct proportions.
To relieve cramps, flex your feet, with your toes pointing upward.
When experiencing a cramp, apply a hot water bottle or heating pad to the cramping area and apply pressure with your hands.
See the following links for helpful information about leg and muscle cramps and recommendations for dietary supplements, herbs and other holistic remedies. Do not take any supplement or use any therapy without consulting with your midwife. Some recommended supplements (nutritional and herbal) may not be used during pregnancy.

MISCARRIAGE (SPONTANEOUS ABORTION)
Some pregnancies are not carried to full term, resulting in a miscarriage. Spontaneous abortion is the technical term for a miscarriage. It is defined as the loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks. The most likely reason for a miscarriage is a chromosomal abnormality in the fetus that makes it unlikely the fetus would survive. Other reasons for a miscarriage include cervical incompetence (the cervix opens and thins before the pregnancy has reached full term), ectopic pregnancy (implantation of the fertilized egg outside the uterine cavity, most commonly in the fallopian tubes), infection, glandular disorders, diabetes, and pregnancy-induced hypertension (high blood pressure). Miscarriages generally are not caused by exercise, sexual activity, heavy lifting, or falls. About 5 percent of American women of childbearing age have 2 or more miscarriages, and not cause can be found in more than half the cases.
HERBS
Taking Red Raspberry Leaf tea during the last few months of pregnancy is thought to help strengthen the uterus and minimize the risk of miscarriage.
Herbal Remedies: Red Raspberry Tea, NOW Foods, 30 Tea Bags
RECOMMENDATIONS
If you experience bleeding or cramping during pregnancy, contact your midwife or health care provider immediately and follow her or his advice.
Do not minimize any feelings of grief, depression, or guilt you may experience after having a miscarriage. Your midwife or health care provider can refer you to a grief counselor or someone who will understand how you feel. If is also important to talk to your midwife or health care provider about the possible reason for the miscarriage so that she or he can reassure you about the outcome of a following pregnancy. It is also quite normal to be able to cope with a miscarriage without experiencing any emotional trauma.
CONSIDERATIONS
Bleeding is not necessarily a sign of impending miscarriage, but it should always be taken seriously. A pelvic examination will probably be necessary to determine if your cervix has started to dilate and if the membranes surrounding the fetus have broken. If both of these conditions are present, it is certain that you will most likely have a miscarriage.
Miscarriage is most likely to occur in the first trimester. Premature labor is the onset of rhythmic uterine contractions before fetal maturity. It usually occurs between the 12th and 37th week of gestation.
Decaffeinated coffee, rather than regular coffee, is thought to be a contributing cause of spontaneous abortion during the first trimester.
Women with either of two genetic irregularities that make them prone to blood clots may be at increased risk of multiple miscarriages. Women who have at least two miscarriages can be tested for the flaws. It has been suggested that certain blood-thinning medications might increase the chances for a healthy pregnancy. A health care provider or midwife should be consulted before taking any medications while pregnant.

MORNING SICKNESS
Approximately 50 percent of all pregnant women experience some degree of nausea and vomiting between the 6th and 12th weeks of pregnancy. This is normal. Although it is commonly called morning sickness, it can occur at any time of day.
Abnormal vomiting - severe, continual nausea and vomiting after the 12th weeks - occurs in approximately 1 in 300 pregnancies. This is called hyperemesis gravidarum, and it can result in dehydration, acidosis, malnutrition, and substantial weight loss. If the condition persists, it can endanger the fetus. The reason for abnormally severe nausea is not clear, but an association has been made between it and very high levels of the hormones estrogen and chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced by the placenta that increases in quantity until the end of the first trimester.
Other possible causes of abnormal vomiting include bile duct disease, drug toxicity, pancreatitis, low blood sugar, a molar pregnancy (a rare condition in which an abnormal mass rather than a fetus grows inside the uterus), problems with the thyroid, and inflammatory bowel disorders.
NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS

Mama Calm, Powder Magnesium Supplement, is easy to prepare with a pleasant taste. Thousand of studies have shown that folic acid is vital for a healthy and successful pregnancy. Zinc and magnesium are equally necessary for proper DNA formation, mood functions and relaxation. Magnesium provides relaxation and comfort. Start with 1 teaspoon or less daily and gradually increase to 3 teaspoons or more, as needed. When bowels are comfortably loose, this is the optimal amount. As you can read from the label, Mama Calm is made as a tea by placing the powder in hot water to dissolve. Cold water can be added at will for instant drinking. It is important to understand that individual needs will vary. Some individuals will need more Natural Calm than others. We recommend that you start with 1 teaspoon daily, and increase your dose up to the point of loose stools. This will be the dose you will need to maintain for regular use. The final amount taken could range anywhere from a 1/4 teaspoon to 3-4 teaspoons. This could be taken all at once or split to 2-3 smaller dosages throughout the day. If you get diarrhea, it is a sign that you used too high a dose, and you need to cut it back to the point where the diarrhea does not reappear.

NOSE BLEEDS & NASAL CONGESTION
During pregnancy, increased blood volume often causes some of the tiny capillaries in the nasal passages to rupture, causing a nosebleed. Inner nasal passages normally swell as well. A lack of vitamin C and the bioflavonoids may be a contributing factor. These conditions disappear after the birth of the baby.
RECOMMENDATIONS

PREMATURE BIRTH
An infant is classified as premature when it is delivered before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Premature birth is a major public health concern because undeveloped babies are at increased risk of death in the first year of life and are more likely to develop heart, lung, and brain disorders if they survive.
Women who take more than a year to get pregnant have a slightly higher than normal chance of giving birth prematurely.
CONSIDERATIONS
Scientists have taken a big step toward developing an earlier, safer, and simple test that might make it possible to prevent as many as 175,000 premature births in the United States each year. Researchers say they have identified certain proteins that can indicate imminent premature birth. Now widely available, the test is performed between the 24th and 34th week of pregnancy on women who are considered to be at high risk. It checks for the presence of fetal fibronectin, a protein found in the uterus when the placenta begins to separate from the uterine wall. The presence of this protein signals that a woman is at high risk for giving birth within 7 days, and intervention can be started.
See the following links for helpful information about premature birth and recommendations for dietary supplements, herbs and other holistic remedies. Do not take any supplement or use any therapy without consulting with your midwife. Some recommended supplements (nutritional and herbal) may not be used during pregnancy.

SCIATICA
The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It arises from the sacral plexus, in the lower back, threads downward through the pelvis through an opening called the greater sciatic foramen, and runs through the hip joint and down the back of the thigh. Irritation of this nerve is common during pregnancy and usually disappears with the birth of the baby.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Beginning in the second trimester, some women experience a sharp shooting pain, which runs from their hip down the buttocks and the back of the leg. This pain is called Sciatica. It is caused from the weight of the uterus on the sciatica nerve. To relive the pain, try wearing a maternity belt. This will help lift the uterus off the nerve. Also, try lying on your left side to relive any pressure the uterus is putting on the nerve. Lying on your left side also helps with circulation and oxygen flow to the baby.
Ask your midwife or health care provider to recommend a registered physical therapist or a chiropractor who has been specially trained to deal with pregnancy problems. A competent practitioner is best able to deal with the problem.

SKIN PROBLEMS
Common skin problems during pregnancy include pimples, acne, red marks, and mask of pregnancy (dark blotches on the skin of the face). These skin changes usually disappear with the birth of the baby.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Keep your skin clean.
If you wear makeup, use only water-based, hypoallergenic cosmetics if your skin is broken out.
CONSIDERATIONS

SORENESS IN THE RIB AREA
Soreness of the rib area during pregnancy is common. Rib pain is caused by the pressure of the expanding uterus pressing into the abdomen, squashing your ribs, as well as baby kicking or punching in that area. Sometimes it feels like a baby's foot or bottom (or other body part) is constantly pressing against the ribs resulting a bruised, painful, achy, sore feeling. Rib pain can range from mild to extremely sore and tender ribs and is usually felt on the right side, just below the breasts. Mainly occurring in the third trimester, it can be more painful when sitting.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Keep in mind that this problem is temporary. The pain will likely disappear in the last 6 weeks of pregnancy or once the baby drops into position (into the pelvic cavity) in preparation for the birth.
Change positions frequently. Watch your posture and do not slump since this shortens the abdominal space, pushing the uterus (and baby) further up into your diaphragm and rib cage. Avoid chairs that do not allow you to keep your back straight put you in a slumping position. When working on the computer, watch your posture. Get up and walk around frequently.
The only real ways to help here are to make yourself as comfortable as possible by wearing lose fitting clothes and supporting yourself with cushions when lying down.
A really effective exercise for temporary relief involves standing facing a wall. With your feet 40 centimeters (or a little over a yard) away from the wall, cross your arms in front of your face. Then lean your crossed arms on the wall sliding them up the wall above your head and stretching yourself up as far as possible. Hold the position for as long as comfortable. This lifts the diaphragm and rib cage up off the uterus and really provides huge temporary relief, especially if the pain is caused by a breech baby's hard little head wedged under your ribs.
Lay down and gently, slowly stretch out the torso while on the floor or your bed. Consider consulting with a yoga instructor and learning some stretching exercises that may help to expand the belly-rib area in later pregnancy.
Apply or rest the sore area on an ice pack or a cold water bottle. It may gave it some relief. Try applying ice gel pack at bedtime. If cold does not work, try using a warm compress or hot water bottle instead, or alternating between hot and cold.
MoonDragon's Health Therapy: Hot & Cold Therapy
Prop yourself up using a pillow or cushions just under the ribs and supporting the side using counterpressure against the sore rib area. You can do this while sitting on the sofa to help relieve pain.
STRETCH MARKS
Stretch marks (called striae) are wavy stripes (scars) commonly appearing on the abdomen, buttocks, breasts, thighs, lower back and upper arms. They start out reddish or purplish in color (fresh) and gradually turn to a pale white color over the course of several months.
Stretch marks are more common in women - especially pregnant women - then men. They are caused by rapid weight gain such as that typically associated with pregnancy, especially the latter half or by the end of the third trimester. Stretch marks occur more commonly in younger women, women with larger babies, overweight or obese women, and those with a family history of stretch marks.
Stretch marks may develop in a variety of other circumstances including body building and weight lifting, extreme weight gain, and occasionally during puberty - adolescents may notice stretch marks during growth spurts. Corticosteroid creams, lotions and pills and chronic steroid use can cause stretch marks. In some cases, widespread stretch marks are a sign of a medical condition such as Cushing's syndrome or another adrenal gland disease as can Marfan syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and other hereditary (genetic) disorders.
They appear when the skin becomes overstretched and the fibers in the elastic middle layer of skin (the dermis) that allow the skin to retain its shape. These elastic fibers are broken and tear when constantly stretched, breaking down and leaving behind stretch marks. Once they appear, they are permanent, but they are not serious and do become much less noticeable, fading with time. While it is possible to reduce and even eliminate the appearance of stretch marks, it is much easier to prevent them.
Treatments can lessen the appearance of stretch marks, but will not completely remove them.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Since stretch marks occur when skin is stretched to the limit of its elasticity - it follows that the best prevention is either to reduce the cause of stretching or to increase elasticity (or both). The degree of success with any treatment will be impacted by your age, your skin tone and even your diet.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding consult your midwife or health care provider first as some products can contain ingredients that may be passed to your unborn baby or into breast milk. Read your product labels carefully. And, if you are pregnant, discuss your concern with your midwife or health care provider at the beginning of your pregnancy, before stretch marks develop, so that preventive treatment can be started. It is best to consult with a dermatologist to determine which treatment approach is best for you and your situation.
Increase your Skin's Elasticity
Stay hydrated by drinking enough water and other fluids throughout the day, every day. Water helps to keep the skin soft, supple and stretchy, thus less likely to develop stretch marks. Avoid caffeine. Caffeine can increase your risk of stretch marks. If you are stuck on your caffeinated coffee or tea, make sure you balance the dehydrating properties of these drinks with plenty of fluids. Drink just as much - or more - water as you drink coffee, tea or soda. Stretch marks can also result from nutritional deficiency. Be sure to consume foods that promote skin health. Foods rich in zinc, such as nuts or fish, foods high in vitamins A and C, such as carrots and citrus fruits and milk, protein-rich foods, such as eggs.
Skin Creams and Lotions containing cocoa butter are rumored to not only help reduce stretch marks, but to help prevent them entirely. Any cream or oil that is made specifically for the prevention or treatment of stretch marks will help keep your skin healthy and elastic. Apply cocoa butter and/or elastin cream topically as directed on the product label. These substances are very good for stretch marks.
Try the following recipe for preventing stretch marks: 1/2 cup Virgin Olive Oil
1/4 cup Aloe Vera Gel
Liquid from 6 capsules of Vitamin E
Liquid from 4 capsules of Vitamin A
1. Mix all the ingredients together in a blender.
2. Pour the mixture into a jar and store it in the refrigerator.
Once a day, apply the oil mixture externally all over the abdomen, hips and thighs - the places where stretch marks commonly appear during pregnancy. If this is done diligently, every day, you may be able to prevent stretch marks from forming.
To prevent stretch marks during pregnancy, rub your breasts and abdomen every day with a massage oil made of 1/2 Sweet Almond Oil with 50 drops of Mandarin Essential Oil added.

Stretch Mark Removal
If you are more concerned with getting rid of stretch marks than preventing them, read on. There are many methods to choose from, ranging from home remedies for stretch marks, to medical and cosmetic procedures. You will notice that every single one of these remedies also helps promote the overall health of your skin - the healthier your skin is, the better it can heal itself. Always consult your midwife or health care provider before undergoing any treatment, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Time - Stretch marks, like all types of scarring fade over time.
Tretinoin Cream (Retin-A, Renova) - 0.1% Tretinoin creams have been shown to significantly reduce the appearance of stretch marks in a study published in the May 1996 Archives of Dermatology. These creams work best when used on fresh stretch marks. Tretinoin cream may improve the appearance of recent stretch marks - those that are less than 6 weeks old and still pink or red in color. Tretinoin, when it works, helps to rebuild collagen, making the stretch mark more similar in appearance to your normal skin. This treatment is not effective on older stretch marks. See your health care provider for a prescription. Warning: Tretinoin treatments should never be used during pregnancy or if you are breast feeding as the active ingredient may be passed to the unborn child or the breast milk.
Exfoliate daily by using a loofah or nylon shower scrunchy to remove dead skin cells daily.
Stretch Mark Creams & Lotions - Using creams and lotions that heal and beautify your skin can reduce the appearance of stretch marks. The following ingredients are widely accepted as beneficial for this purpose:
- Cocoa Butter
- Rose Hip Oil
- Emu Oil
- Jojoba Oil
- Shea Butter or Shea Nut Oil
- Vitamin A, E & C (See supplement links below)
- Castor Oil (Be careful about using castor oil while pregnant. It should be avoided since it can bring on labor contractions.)
Emu Oil is a natural skin softener and protector, supporting skin hydration and elasticity. It improves skin surface blood flow and healing. Emu oil is essential for the prevention of dry, aging skin, scaling and dermatitis. The application of Emu Oil will allow the essential fatty acids to penetrate the epidermal layers of skin down to the basal layer where it enhances cell proliferation. The fatty acid esters contained in Emu Oil provide the benefit of increased blood flow, accelerating the healing process.
Vic's VaporRub - It sounds weird, but many people have reported success using Vic's VaporRub by applying it to a washcloth or paper towel and rubbing it forcefully into the scarred skin on a nightly basis for a few weeks. Since it contains menthol and other ingredients, do not use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding without consulting with your midwife or health care provider.
Increase Circulation - You can increase blood circulation by taking hot baths and massaging the areas regularly. If you are pregnant, do not take hot baths since these can cause overheating to the fetus.
Tanning - Go sunbathing! Tanning can diminish and even eliminate minor stretch marks. Be sure to use a good sun screen to prevent burning and UV skin damage.
MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Sunburn
Vitamin E Gel or Oil - Break open vitamin E capsules and rub the oil into the skin over the stretch marks daily for 2 weeks. Vitamin E is also available in bottled liquid form that can be dabbed onto the skin.
Unstretch the skin. After the skin returns to its normal, unstretched size, stretch marks often become nearly invisible.
MEDICAL PROCEDURES FOR STRETCH MARKS
Microdermabrasion: Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure popular in spas and salons where the top-most layer of skin is removed by chemical or mechanical means. This type of treatment involves a hand-held device that blows crystals onto skin. These crystals gently abrade or "polish" the skin's surface. Then, a vacuum tube removes the crystals and skin cells. Microdermabrasion gently removes the skin's topmost layer, which may result in new skin growth that is more elastic. This therapy is an option for older stretch marks.
Endermologie: Endermologie machines massage and work the skin in order to increase circulation and expel toxins.
Laser Therapy: There are several different types of laser treatments available that can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks and heal you skin.
- Pulsed Dye Laser Therapy - Used at wavelengths of light that are non-wounding (non-ablative), this type of laser therapy remodels underlying skin (dermis) by stimulating the growth of collagen and elastin. Pulsed dye laser therapy is most effective when stretch marks are new but may still be effective on older stretch marks.
- Fractional Photothermolysis - Like pulsed dye laser therapy, this non-ablative laser treatment uses wavelengths of light to stimulate new growth of collagen and elastin. The difference is that it causes partial (fractional) damage to small dot-like areas within a targeted zone. Because most of the treated area remains undamaged, the skin heals quickly, as if the entire area were treated.
- Excimer Laser - The excimer laser does nothing for collagen or elastin growth. Instead, its aim is repigmentation by stimulating melanin production. If it works, the old and lighter streaks become similar in color to the surrounding skin, and therefore less visible. This is often used for older stretch marks.
See your dermatologist for the latest information on these methods. Work with your health care provider to choose the most appropriate treatment. Factors to consider include:
- Age of the stretch marks.
- Convenience of treatment - therapies differ in length and frequency of sessions.
- Cost - these options are cosmetic and usually not covered by medical insurance.
- Your expectations - most treatments, at best, are only partially effective.
Health insurance may not cover stretch mark removal because it is a cosmetic procedure (even if the stretch marks are severe). Talk with your particular provider to see what is covered under your health plan.

SWEATING
No matter how hard you try to keep cool, there are just times when you really sweat. In fact, pregnant women may feel excessively warm during their pregnancy, especially during the last few months leading to child birth. Sweating is a natural reaction of the body to cool down bodies that have been heated or warmed. Sweating can be a problem no matter what season it may be, summer or winter, pregnant women tend to sweat more. Sweating during pregnancy is something that can be uncomfortable especially for those pregnant women who are fussy and do not want to feel stuffy.
While you are pregnant, your body makes sure that its temperature is perfect for your baby's development. In addition, as your size increases, the amount of effort it takes to walk, climb stairs, and do many everyday things also increases. As a result, you may find yourself sweating more than you did before. Sweating is also a way for your body to remove toxins through the skin. Remember, you are eliminating waste products for two people, instead of one, while you are pregnant.
CAUSES FOR SWEATING DURING PREGNANCY
Some causes for sweating during pregnancy can be the increased flow of blood in the skin. This causes the pregnant woman to feel warmer than usual and this will stimulate the sweat glands to cool her down. The elevated flow of blood to the skin along with the increase in the progesterone hormone causes many of the skin's capillaries to be more open, thus making the pregnant woman feel warm or flushed. This contributes greatly to sweating during pregnancy.
Another cause for increased sweating during pregnancy is the occupation of the baby in the mother's womb. Having another living being inside the body can contribute to the mother feeling hot and stuffy especially during the later months. Pregnant women will always sweat more than when they were not pregnant. The sweat glands tend to work several times as much as when she was not pregnant to cool her off. This sometimes causes excessive sweating during pregnancy.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Be sure to keep your fluids up to replace any lost through sweating. Dehydration can be dangerous during pregnancy. Sweating during pregnancy may be the cause of pregnant woman having leg cramps due to loss of salt when sweating. To make up for loss of necessary elements and substances lost sweating during pregnancy, drink lots of fluids. Juices supplemented with fibers can help you deal with constipation that sometimes come with pregnancy as well as nourish your legs to avoid leg cramps. You might want to replenish you fluids by drinking water with electrolytes and sodium to keep you feeling in tip top shape instead of dehydrated.
Be aware of personal hygiene and keep your body clean to prevent skin irritations and yeast growths.
Sweat may cause skin to react to certain metals, such as nickel, and result in a rash. Avoid wearing any metals against your skin (such as costume jewelry or wrist watches) if you are prone to sweating.
Wear loose, light, comfortable clothing (including undergarments). Choose clothing made of "breathable" natural fibers such as cotton or linen. Wear a broad rimmed hat when out in the sun. Avoid synthetic fabrics such as polyester, rayon, or nylon.
Do not use a hot tub or a sauna during pregnancy. This increase in body temperature can cause fetal distress. For the same reason, be careful about strenuous exercise, especially in hot weather. If you are having problems in coping with hot weather, consider investing in a air conditioner that you can use to keep your body temperature down and comfortable. Cool showers or laying under a cool, damp bath towel in front of a fan can help keep your body cooler. Avoid strong sun and stay indoors during hot weather. Heat stroke may occur if you do not take steps to keep your body temperature down.

TESTS PERFORMED DURING PREGNANCY
Your health care provider or midwife may recommend a number of different diagnostic tests when you become pregnant or before you become pregnant, if you are planning on having a child. If you believe that some of these tests are inappropriate or unnecessary, you can, of course, decline to have them. Discuss this with your midwife or health care provider.
There are also tests that can be performed during pregnancy to assess the health and development of the fetus. However, some of these tests involve an element of risk for both mother and child. Therefore, they should be done only when medically indicated, and not used routinely or for the mother's or the health care provider's convenience. If a test is suggested, be sure that you are fully aware of why it is needed and of any risks or dangers that may be involved before deciding to have it done.
ROUTINE TESTS
The routine tests most health care providers recommend during pregnancy include the following:
- Blood Pressure: This is taken to test for preeclampsia. It is usually taken at each visit.
MoonDragon's Lab Information & Tests: Taking Blood Pressure by Auscultation
MoonDragon's Lab Information & Tests: Taking Blood Pressure by Palpation
- Blood Sugar Level: This is a urine test for gestational diabetes. It is usually taken at the first visit and on further visits if you are considered to be at high risk for the condition.
- Blood Type: This is taken in case a blood transfusion becomes necessary and to see if there are blood type incompatibilities (Rh- factor, most common) between you and your baby. It is usually done during your first visit.
MoonDragon's Lab Information & Tests: ABO-Rh Blood Typing (Eldon Card Method)
MoonDragon's Lab Information & Tests: ABO-Rh Blood Typing & Incompatibilities
- Drug Test: This is a urine test for illicit drug use. It may be taken on your first visit.
- Hemoglobin Level: This is a blood test to check for anemia. It is usually done at your first visit.
- Pap Smear: This is an internal swab test of the cervix to check for cancer cells. It is usually done on the first visit.

- Protein (Albumin): This is another urine test for preeclampsia. It is usually done at each visit.
- Rubella Antibody Test: This is done to determine whether you have achieved immunity to rubella (German measles), which can be dangerous to a developing fetus in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. It is usually taken on the first visit.
- Sexually Transmitted Disease Testing: Genital swabs may be taken to test for signs of diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. This is usually done during the first visit and, possibly, in later visits.
- Urinalysis: This is done to test for urinary tract infection. It is usually done at the first visit and possibly on subsequent visits.
AMNIOCENTESIS
This is an invasive medical procedure that is sometimes performed during pregnancy to determine the health of the fetus. It is rarely carried out unless there is a possibility of fetal abnormality. Routine amniocentesis is recommended only for women over the age of 35, women who are more at risk for having a Down syndrome child, or for couples who have an increased risk of passing on a genetic abnormality to their child. A local anesthetic is administered and then a long, hollow needle is inserted through the mother's abdomen into the uterus to remove amniotic fluid for cellular analysis. The needle can be seen on ultrasound, which allows a 3-dimensional real-time view of the uterus and the fetus.
The amniotic fluid contains fetal cells that can be cultivated and tested. Although it has become fairly common as women are choosing to have children in later years, this procedure entails risks for both the pregnant woman and the fetus. There may be some danger of blood exchange between the mother and the fetus, infection of the amniotic fluid, peritonitis, the development of blood clots, placental hemorrhage, and premature labor. Therefore, great care must be taken in recommending, and then in performing, amniocentesis.
Amniocentesis can be done only during the 16th to 18th week of pregnancy, and the results are not known for 2 weeks. This test should be performed only if you plan to terminate the pregnancy if an abnormality is found or if knowledge of any problem is necessary for proper prenatal care.

MoonDragon's ObGyn Procedures: Amniocentesis, How To Information
CHORIONIC VILLUS SAMPLING (CVS)
This invasive test is performed rarely and carries a greater risk than amniocentesis. The chorionic villi are finger-like projections of the embryonic sac that contain cells with the same genetic composition as the embryo. In this test, a small sample of this chorionic tissue is taken and analyzed to determine genetic abnormalities in the fetus. It can be performed earlier than amniocentesis, usually in about the 12th week of pregnancy, and take about a half-hour to complete.
Possible dangers from CVS include infection, maternal or fetal bleeding, spontaneous abortion (miscarriage), Rh immunization, birth defects, and perforation of the membrane surround the embryo. The chief advantage is that it can be performed earlier in pregnancy, when termination, if deemed necessary, is a simpler and less dangerous procedure. As with all tests, you should weigh all the pluses and minuses carefully before making a decision.

ESTRIOL EXCRETION STUDIES, NON-STRESS TEST, OXYTOCIN CHALLENGE TEST
These tests also are used to determine the health of the fetus. The estriol excretion study determines the best time for delivery of the fetus in cases of diabetes or other difficulties in pregnancy. The non-stress test determines fetal wellbeing, and the oxytocin challenge test helps to predict how well the baby will fare during the stress of labor.
If it is determined that any of these tests is necessary, your health care provider or midwife should discuss it with you in depth. When considering any type of prenatal testing, always remember that it is your body and your baby. You should be fully informed of all the advantages and all the risks of any procedure before agreeing to it.
ULTRASOUND
Ultrasound imaging is a common diagnostic medical procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce dynamic images (sonograms) of organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body. Prenatal ultrasound examinations are performed by trained professionals, such as sonographers, radiologists, and obstetricians. The procedure involves using a transducer, which sends a stream of high-frequency sound waves into the body and then detects their echoes as they bounce off internal structures. The sound waves are then converted into electrical impulses, which are processed to form an image, which is displayed on a computer monitor. It is from these images that videos and portraits are made.
Ultrasound is a form of energy, and even at low levels, laboratory studies have shown it can produce physical effects in tissue, such as jarring vibrations and a rise in temperature. Although there is no evidence that these physical effects can harm a fetus, the fact that they exist means that prenatal ultrasound cannot be considered completely innocuous. A few studies suggest that exposure to diagnostic ultrasound during pregnancy may have an effect on human development, such as delayed speech in children. Further, there have been instances in which an unskilled technician has performed and/or interpreted the results of an ultrasound test or the procedure has not been done under the supervision of a qualified practitioner. Some facilities might not have equipment in good working order. It is worth considering, therefore, whether it is worth taking a chance with your baby's health for the sake of a video. For every reason a mother-to-be might want a keepsake video, there are good reasons she should not have one. Legitimate uses for ultrasound imaging include:
- Diagnosing pregnancy.
- Determining fetal age.
- Diagnosing congenital abnormalities.
- Evaluating the position of the placenta.
- Determination of multiple pregnancies.

VARICOSE VEINS
Varicose veins are enlarged veins close to the surface of the skin that often emerge during pregnancy. In some cases, they disappear after the baby's birth.
RECOMMENDATIONS
As often as possible, sit with your feet elevated, higher than your heart.
Change positions frequently. Do not stand for long periods of time or sit in cross-legged positions.
Wear support hose if your midwife or health care provider recommends them. Keep them near your bed and put them on before you get out of bed.
Walk one mile each day to promote circulation.
Do not wear elastic-topped knee socks, garters, belts, or high-heeled shoes.
See the following links for helpful information about varicose veins and recommendations for dietary supplements, herbs and other holistic remedies. NUTRITIONAL HEALTH DURING PREGNANCY
NUTRIENTS
During pregnancy, it is more important than ever to have a balanced diet that is high in nutrients and fiber and low in bad fats and cholesterol. The following are recommendations for maintaining health in pregnancy.
HERBS FOR PREGNANCY
HELPFUL HERBS DURING PREGNANCY
Red Raspberry Tea is high in Iron and calcium and helps with nausea, and tones the uterine muscles to allow it to contract more effectively. It can be consumed throughout the pregnancy. It is a good all-around woman's herb with plenty of nutritious benefits.
Alfalfa is high in iron, protein, vitamin K and is a good blood cleanser. It helps clot blood due to hemorrhaging. It is good for woman who have problems with anemia (most women do because of their blood loss during menses).
Nettle Leaf is also high in vitamins A, C, calcium, potassium, iron and vitamin K. It is a good all around pregnancy tonic. It has a slight minty taste (it is a member of the mint family). It can be used to build the blood and supply necessary nutrition needed during the pregnancy. In the early spring when nettle first comes up and begins growing leaves, the fresh young leaves can be plucked and eaten in salads. They have not developed their "sting" yet. Later the whole plant can be harvested (be sure to wear protective gloves and clothing when harvesting) and dried. Once dried, the leaves lose their sting and can be used in teas.
Peppermint Leaf is a good herb that soothes and helps the digestive system. It is helpful for nausea and gastric upset. Make sure your peppermint is strongly aromatic (it should have a strong peppermint scent to it). Added to teas, it can add a nice minty flavor to otherwise "green-tasting" teas.
These four herbs are found in MoonDragon's Pregnancy Tea. The recipe is:2 parts Red Raspberry Leaf (dried)
1 part Alfalfa Leaf (dried)
1 part Nettle Leaf (dried)
1 part Peppermint Leaf (dried)
Mix well and store in a glass jar in a cool dark place. Light will deplete the nutrients in the leaves. This tea can be consumed throughout pregnancy and is helpful towards the end of pregnancy to prepare for the birth. It is a good base tea to add tinctures or other remedies to during the labor and it can also be made into iced cubes and ice chips to be used by the mother during her labor. It makes a great sun tea and can be consumed cold or hot. I usually recommend about a quart a day of prepared tea. This gives the mom help with her fluids and her nutrition. It can be used unsweetened or with a little honey added for sweetener, if desired.
Alfalfa is a good source of vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin K, which is essential for normal blood clotting. ALFALFA

Alfalfa can help lower cholesterol, balance hormones, and promote pituitary gland function. Alfalfa alkalizes and detoxifies the body, acts as a diuretic, anti-inflammatory and contains an anti-fungal agent. Alfalfa is also good for treating anemia, bone and joint disorders, colon and digestive disorders, skin disorders and ulcers. Alfalfa has shown to be beneficial in preventing endometrial and colon cancer. It has been said that it helps reduce the effects of rheumatoid arthritis and other arthritic conditions. Taking Alfalfa tablets before meals will help prevent the absorption of cholesterol. There is some evidence to suggest that Alfalfa tea can be useful in treating diabetes, stimulating appetite and for use as a general tonic. This plant works well as a food for convalescents because it gives many nutrients their body needs to heal and become strong. Alfalfa has shown some estrogenic activity and could be useful in treating problems with menstruation and menopause.
Alfalfa supplements come in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. Powdered Alfalfa contains vitamins A, B-1, B-6, B-12, C, E, & K-1, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, folic acid and many essential and nonessential amino acids. For tablets or capsules it is best to read and follow product label directions. Here are a couple of examples of some dosages:
- The recommended dose is 500 to 1,000 mg of the dried leaf per day or 1-2ml of tincture.
- Alfalfa for tea - 1 to 2 teaspoons per cup, steeped in boiling water for 10 to 20 minutes.

Blue Cohosh, Black Cohosh, False Unicorn Root, and Squaw Vine are beneficial for taking the last 4 weeks of pregnancy. They help to prepare the body for an easier birth and aid contractions. Caution: These herbs should not be taken in the first two trimesters of pregnancy and should only be used under the supervision and recommendation of your midwife. LABOR PREPARATION FORMULAS
Herbal Remedies: Childbirth, 5 Weeks Before Tincture, 2 fl. oz.
The Childbirth, 5 Weeks Before Tincture contains a mixture of well-known herbs like Red Raspberry Leaf, Blue Cohosh Root and False Unicorn, which are believed to help prepare the woman's body for an easier labor.
BLUE COHOSH
Herbal Remedies: Blue Cohosh Powder (Caulophyllum Thalictroides), 4 oz. Bulk
Herbal Remedies: Blue Cohosh Tincture (Caulophyllum Thalictroides), 100% Organic, 2 fl. oz.
Blue Cohosh supplements are used to regulate the menstrual flow and for treating suppressed menstruation. Midwives often use Blue Cohosh to initiate labor in postdates women. It helps to start contractions when a woman is ready to deliver and needs a little extra boost. This herb eases muscle spasms and stimulates uterine contractions for childbirth and has been used in folk medicine to prevent miscarriage. Blue Cohosh has also been used to improve memory and calm nerves. This herb also reduces the inflammation of arthritis and rheumatism. Blue Cohosh is an excellent uterine tonic that may be used in any situation where there is weakness or loss of tone. European researchers have identified some antibiotic and immune-stimulating properties, it may have a potential in treating bladder and kidney infections. Blue Cohosh is also used in Homeopathy. The homeopathic remedy made from Blue Cohosh is called Caulophyllum and is recommended for menstrual cramps, PMS, dysmenorrhea and support during childbirth. Homeopaths may also prescribe Caulophyllum for gout, rheumatism, false labor pains and gonorrhea.
Blue Cohosh Dosage Information: Blue Cohosh comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For making an infusion it is a 1:16 ratio of 15-30 ml every 2-4 hours. In using a tincture it is a 1:5 ration of 0.6-1.8 ml, 3 to 4 times per day. A Blue Cohosh extract is a 1:1 ratio in 60% alcohol, 0.3-0.9 ml, 3 times per day. For treating one of the conditions above, it is best to seek the advice of your health care provider before using Blue Cohosh for the treatment of your condition.
Blue Cohosh Safety & Interaction Information: Blue Cohosh should never be taken during the first two trimesters of pregnancy. The powdered form of this herb can irritate the skin and mucous membranes. If you are taking any other medications (prescription or over-the-counter), it is best to consult with your health care provider before using Blue Cohosh for the treatment of your condition.
BLACK COHOSH
Herbal Remedies: Black Cohosh Root, Nature's Way, 540 mg, 180 Caps
Herbal Remedies: Black Cohosh Extract, Standardized, Nature's Way, 40 mg, 60 Tabs
Herbal Remedies: Black Cohosh Extract, Standardized, Nature's Way, 40 mg, 120 VCaps
Herbal Remedies: Black Cohosh Powder (Cimicifuga Racemosa), 4 oz. Bulk
Herbal Remedies: Black Cohosh Tincture (Cimicifuga Racemosa), 100% Organic, 2 fl. oz.
This Black Cohosh Supplement is ethically wild harvested black cohosh root. Black cohosh is often used by midwives to help weak contractions to become stronger during labor. Germany's Commission E recommends using Black Cohosh for treating menopause, dysmenorrhea, and PMS. Clinical results show improvement in hot flashes, sweating, headache, vertigo, heart palpitations, tinnitus (a ringing or similar sensation in the ears), nervousness, irritability, sleep disturbance, anxiety, vaginal dryness, and depression. In a 1995 German trial, it was found that when combined with St. John's Wort, Black Cohosh was 78 percent effective in treating hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. As a treatment for menopause, medical studies reported Black Cohosh to be more effective than estrogen in relieving symptoms and in normalizing the appearance of vaginal cells under microscopic evaluation. In a 1999 study at the New York College, it was found that Black Cohosh was shown to inhibit the growth of T-47D cells. The study concluded that this herb and others may be useful in preventing breast cancer. In a 2002 German study, it was reported that Black Cohosh has antiestrogenic effects. It was previously thought to have estrogenic effects. This herb is useful in treating inflammatory arthritis and rheumatism. The sedative action in Black Cohosh is helpful in treating high blood pressure, whopping cough, and asthma.
Black Cohosh Dosage Information: Black Cohosh comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. The recommended dosage is 1 or 2 tablets 2 times a day of a standardized extract, manufactured to contain 1 mg of 27-deoxyacteine per tablet. For a tincture, take 2-4ml per day. Black Cohosh can take 4 to 6 weeks to produce the full benefits. Do not confuse it with Blue Cohosh, which is potentially more dangerous because the chemicals in it are toxic to the heart.
Black Cohosh Safety & Interaction Information: Black Cohosh should not be taken for more than six months at a time. Black Cohosh rarely has side effects other than occasional mild gastrointestinal distress. Due to the potential hormonal activity, Black Cohosh is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women, or for adolescents. Women taking Black Cohosh should not take it together with birth control pills, HRT, such sedatives as diazepam or blood pressure medications.
FALSE UNICORN
Herbal Remedies: False Unicorn Extract Tincture, 100% Organic, 2 fl. oz.
False Unicorn is an excellent overall tonic and is mostly used for the treatment of female sterility. It is strengthening to the female reproductive system, helps to prevent miscarriage, used in treating amenorrhea, painful and irregular menstruations, leucorrhea, morning sickness (taken in small amounts) and menopausal difficulties.
Many herbalists recommend False Unicorn for reducing menopausal symptoms, and treating ovarian cysts. It has also been used to normalize hormone levels following oral contraceptive use. This root balances sex hormones in males as well as females. It can also be used for endometriosis, ovarian cysts, menstrual irregularities and pain, premenstrual syndrome and prostate disorders. False Unicorn is used to treat venereal diseases, particularly gonorrhea. It is also used as a diuretic and to rid the intestinal tract of worms. This herb can also stimulate the appetite and relieve the nausea and vomiting that accompany pregnancy.
False Unicorn Dosage Information: False Unicorn comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For using a decoction, take 1-2 teaspoonfuls of the root in 1 cup of boiling water. Drink 3 times a day. For using a tincture, take 2-4 ml, 3 times a day. If using False Unicorn for the "normalizing" effect on the female reproductive system in regulating the menstrual cycle, or promoting an absent cycle, note that it can take several months before there is a significant effect on the cycle. For other formulations read product label directions.
False Unicorn Safety & Interaction Information: There are no interactions associated with False Unicorn; however, exceeding the recommended doses can cause nausea and vomiting. Do not use False Unicorn while pregnant since it's effect on the uterus is not very well understood and because it does increase hormones. It is best to consult with your health care provider first for the treatment of any of the above named conditions. Safety in young children, nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known.
SQUAW VINE
ShamanShop: Squaw Vine Tincture, 100% Organic, 2 fl. oz.
ShamanShop: Squaw Vine Powder, 1/2 lb.
ShamanShop: Squaw Vine Capsules, 60 VCaps
Squaw Vine is believed to facilitate all aspects of childbirth. Taken by Native American women during confinement (the last stages of pregnancy and nearing delivery), the herb was believed to prepare the uterus for an easier and safe delivery. Squaw Vine is thought to stimulate and tone the uterus, strengthen and relax the uterine muscles and thus strengthen uterine contractions. Finally, the herb is said to help expel afterbirth when delivery is over.
Squaw vine is recommended by herbalists to treat menstrual pains and cramps, to regulate menstruation, relieve heavy bleeding, and to induce childbirth and ease delivery. It is said to have a tonic action on the uterus and the ovaries. Squaw Vine is sometimes used to stimulate breast-milk production as well, and in some cases, this herb has been used to treat diarrhea and colitis. As a lotion or salve, this herb is used to treat nursing mother's sore or cracked nipples.
Squaw Vine Dosage Information: To take as a tea, pour 1 cup of boiling water onto 1 teaspoonful of the herb. Drink 3 times a day. In tincture form, take 1 -2 ml of the tincture 3 times a day.
Squaw Vine Safety & Interaction Information: There are no known safety issues associated when taking Squaw vine in the recommended doses.

Do not take supplements containing the amino acid phenylalanine. Phenylalanine may alter brain growth in the fetus. Also avoid food products containing the sweetener aspartame (found in Equal, Nutrasweet, and other products), which contains high levels of phenylalanine.

Do not take mineral oil, which blocks the absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins. Consult with your health care provider about the use of any supplements and over-the-counter medications.
Avoid activities that may endanger the abdomen, or that involve jarring, bouncing, or twisting movements. Also avoid activities involving rapid starts and stops, because the body's center of gravity changes during pregnancy and it is easy to lose your balance.
Avoid using an electric blanket. Several experts warn that the invisible electromagnetic field emanating from an electric blanket may increase the risk of miscarriage and developmental problems.
Take warm, rather than hot showers or baths. Anything that increases the core body temperature for any length of time may cause neural tube defects in babies such as anencephaly and spina bifida. Anencephalic babies do not develop a brain and rarely survive. Spina bifida is a defect in the spinal column that can affect the baby to varying degrees, depending on the severity of the condition.

MoonDragon's Nutrition Guidelines Index
Lack of zinc, manganese, and folic acid, as well as amino acid imbalances, have been linked to fetal deformities and mental retardation.
MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Nutrition Basics Index
All women of childbearing age who are thinking of becoming pregnant should take a daily supplement of 400 mcg of folic acid and a B-vitamin complex. Folic acid deficiency is linked to such neurologic birth defects as spina bifida and anencephaly. To prevent these disorders, this B vitamin must be present in the body during the first 6 weeks following conception, a crucial early phase in fetal neurological development. Since most women do not know they have conceived until several weeks afterward, the best way to prevent these birth defects is for women who are planning to become pregnant to have an adequate supply of these nutrients at all times. Supplementation is recommended because many women do not get enough folic acid from dietary sources. Folic acid also helps alleviate hemorrhaging in childbirth and improves milk production. Men too should be as healthy as they possibly can before they conceive children.

Both partners should give up alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs - legal or otherwise - at least 3 to 6 months before they decide to conceive. Marijuana, heroin, morphine, and tobacco all reduce levels of male sex hormones and increase the risks of birth defects.

Taking the drug phenytoin (Dilantin) or phenobarbitol, used to control epileptic seizures, creates 4 times the usual risk of producing a baby with heart defects. In addition, the antibiotics ampicillin (Omnipen, Polycillin) or tetracycline may cause heart malformations. Ask your health care provider for a detailed list of teratogenic agents and drugs (chemicals that cause birth defects). These include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Some ACE inhibitors.
- Some acne medications.
- Some antibiotics.
- Some blood-thinning medications.
- Some cancer drugs.
- Some hormone preparations.
- Some seizure medications.
- Some thyroid treatment drugs.
- Chronic (long-term) alcohol intake.
- Cocaine.
These teratogens that affect the development of the baby include drugs taken by men during the time of conception.
MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Teratogens
Excessive vitamin A has been linked with cleft palate, heart defects, and other congenital defects. Foods rich in vitamin A may also cause problems. Foods containing natural beta-carotene, however, are not harmful because the body converts beta-carotene to vitamin A only as needed, and not in amounts that may be toxic to the body. Pregnant women should not take more than 10,000 IU of vitamin A daily from their supplements.
MoonDragon's Nutrition Basics: Vitamin A
One of the best things you can do for your child is to breastfeed your baby for at least the first 3 months of life - longer if possible (6 months to 18 months, or longer is a goal). Mother's milk is not only the most nutritious food for the baby, but it also provides crucial disease-fighting agents (antibodies from the mother are important because the baby has an underdeveloped immune system at birth). A new mother should consume 500 more calories per day when nursing than she ate during pregnancy (about the equivalence of an extra peanut butter sandwich on whole grain bread daily). The diet should include a substantial amount of liquids and extra portions of calcium-rich foods. If nursing is not possible and you must bottle-feed, use a well-balanced soy-based product. Cow's milk does not supply a human infant with enough iron, linoleic acid, or vitamin E, and babies who are fed cow's milk have a greater chance of developing allergies to milk and dairy products later in life.
